UPDATED: Microsoft Doesn't Cancel Seinfeld's Commercials About Nothing

POSTED BY | THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 18 AT 6:56 PDT

Update: Reports are now saying that Microsoft hasn't canceled its series of nonsensical commercials, just put them on the back burner for a while. I, for one, am relieved.

The DVR has probably just about eliminated commercials from your life, but these Microsoft spots starring Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld were more like mini TV shows than ads. The problem is that they were kind of stupid and a lot of people really hated them. They were so disliked, in fact, that Microsoft has pulled the plug on the series, sending Jerry home to his mansion full of sports cars and Bill back to his Scrooge McDuck vault full of gold coins.

In case you don't feel like sitting through six minutes of Microsoft commercials, the plot basically puts Gates and Seinfeld in spots where they have to mix with normal folks like us. They get very absurd rather quickly and don't advertise for one specific product. Not surprisingly, once the ads debuted, a bunch of Internet folks posted them along with an abundance of caps lock ranting about how the suck. That's enough to get Microsoft to pull the plug and enter a "second phase" of the campaign. It's actually a little sad, because I thought they were funny. Who better to be in a campaign about nothing than the guy who made his career out of it.

Maybe Zach Galifianakis would have been a better choice. After seeing his vodka commercials, I don't see how they could pass him up.
