'Dexter' Season Five Killer Details

POSTED BY Wookie Johnson | FRIDAY MARCH 5 AT 5:51 PST
TV Show Title:

The season four finale of Dexter knocked the wind out of us and made me want to punch John Lithgow (something I swore I'd never do). Though it also served to reinvigorate a slumping storyline. So we were more than eager to chat with executive producer Sara Colleton when we caught up with her on the red carpet at PaleyFest 2010. If you're not caught up on the series, stop reading now as there are SPOILERS AHEAD. Here's what she told us we can expect in the new season.

Dexter's not really one to wear his heart on his sleeve. What can we expect as he learns how to grieve?

He is going to have to deal with a lot of feelings that he's never felt before, so it'll be interesting. He's going to approach it all, we hope, in a way that is unique and feels authentic to the audience. You'll see him go through all of those things and it will be different. I don't want to telegraph exactly what we're going to do because we want to present what anyone would be going through in that situation in a very unique Dexter-like way.

SEE WHAT ELSE COLLETON HAD TO SAY, INCLUDING NEWS ABOUT THE SEASON'S BIG BAD, AFTER THE JUMP...

Dex no doubt feels a great level of guilt now that his secret life has directly harmed his loved ones. How will this guilt affect the tone of the season?

We hope that every year reflects the accumulative emotional experience of previous years. So it's not as if every year we start with tabula rasa and go through the same beats. So what he's gone through or the way we ended season four is such powerful emotional gut-wrenching thing for anyone to go through. But for Dexter particularly for two reasons. A, where is his responsibility in Rita's death and B, has he put his child in a situation that mirrors his own origin as a deeply unhappy person who is too damaged to change?

You've always cast wonderful adversaries but John Lithgow had such an amazing turn. Where do you go from Trinity?

We're trying to write really brilliant adversaries that require brilliant actors so we will hope to get a piece of great casting.

Is Dexter's suburban life going to come to an end?

It's going to be harder to maintain because it will be a process, but without a wife and without a reason to be in the 'burbs, is Dexter meant for the 'burbs? We'll see. We feel it's a tremendous opportunity because we sort of went down an avenoe of human behavior as far as he could go before it became dead ended really.

Will we see Julie Benz again? In flashbacks or in the same way Harry visits Dexter?

I think it's very important that the show and everyone in Dexter's life explores and shows the loss of Rita. Bringing her back in a flashback or visionary way sort of steps on our use of Harry. We want to be very, very specific about that and not get gimmicky because it becomes too much of a device.

    great stuff.

I think Dexter should still help out astor and cody. It would really go with his character because it would make him look like the most perfect citizen.

Oh wow dude that looks like a lot of fun man!

That's what I'm worried about, what are going to happen with the kids. Will Dexter as a single parent work? I mean, even if his step-children go to someone else, not sure why they would, since he was married. He still has his own baby to deal with.

  7. Andy Says:

I'm interested as to how Dexter will be able to explain Rita's death, since Trinity was actually seen (by Batista) talking to Dexter in the police department.

Surely that'll be an interesting and difficult task.

    I can't wait for Season 5!

Batista saw him talk to Trinity... BUT... Dexter pinned the whole Trinity thing on another guy... remember... so Batista would NOT think twice about that random guy Dexter talked to.

Off topic... Rita is so Sexy/Hot in Desperate Housewives. She was cute/hot in Dexter... but so freaking sexy hot on the new show. I hope she gets leading lady roles in major films now. Her role as Rita annoyed me... not her as an actress... just the nagging wife.

Yeah, I thought there could be no way for Dexter to get himself out of this one. I think the last episode would have been a great series finale. I was surprised to find there would be more episodes forthcoming.. I guess the show won't be over until another significant adversary kills him, because if the producer doesn't want gimmicky flashbacks, then she surely doesn't want the series to end with a perfect world setting. It's always seems a challenge to end good TV series and make people feel like it had a long enough life and came to a nice conclusion. It makes you wonder — I never get tired if Dexter, but how long can they go on making an amazing show? Look at LOST, they have a show that started out great, but they've tried too hard to draw it out as many seasons as possible. Hope that never happens with Dexter.

"Though it also served to reinvigorate a slumping storyline."

Dude, what are you talking about? The storyline has not been "slumping" at all. Its been unexpected, fast paced, dramatic, etc. Each season the writers have consistently raised the bar for the show one step higher. I'm dying to see what they do next season as the bar and our collective expectations are that much higher.

i wonder how dexter will be able to manage his job, his kids and his secret life.

  12. Anonymous Says:

    Ahhh The Dark Passenger......

I imagine Rita's Mother will seek full custody of the children.

  13. Anonymous Says:

Right. Rita's mother was quite the strong personality, might be smart enough to be suspicious of Dexer herself. She won't leave this one alone for sure. If she doubted him all along, she won't let him get those kids, except for the baby. How will he take care of an infant?
