Today in news that has probably been assumed since the Emmys a few weeks ago, Homeland has gotten picked up for a third season. The order is for the now-industry-standard 12 episodes, which is a number that comfort us with its familiarity. Conversely, an 11-episode pickup would have angered and confused us to such a degree that we couldn't reasonably be held accountable for our actions. Ditto for 13 episodes.

The news comes after Sunday's most-watched-ever episode, which garnered 1.75 million viewers, which fell just short of Dexter's 1.9 million that night.

The news of this renewal, while not surprising, comes as great news for fans of great television, and also Claire Danes' agent, who probably has been long overdue for a payday.
