SJ’s Mid-Season TV Show Picks

Thursday, January 7 by

It’s that time of year when networks bust out a few new shows and returning favorites to fill the space that all the Fall season crap left behind. We’ve chosen our 10 mid-season favorites that through our in-depth analysis seem like the programs worth your precious time. Watch them live or set your DVR up for series record, but at least give them a chance. Then if they suck you can tell us to shove our horrible judgement up our asses.

PARENTHOOD

What it’s about:

It’s like the Ron Howard movie, but a TV show. Sorry, no Steve Martin, though. Follow the Braverman Family as they try to hold it together.

When it’s on:

Mondays at 9:00PM E/P on NBC. Premieres March 1st.

Why you should watch:

Peter Krause and Craig T. Nelson rock. Also, the show was adapted for television by Jason Katims, who ran Friday Night Lights for three seasons. Katims knows how to tell an emotional story with well-drawn characters.

24

What it’s about:

Jack Bauer does what he normally does except now he’s a grandpa living in New York City.

When it’s on:

Mondays at 8:00PM E/P on FOX. Premieres Sunday January 17th at 8:00PM E/P.

Why you should watch:

It’s a comfor knowing that Jack is going to get in to trouble, then out of it, then in it again, and it’s going to continue like that for twenty-four hours.

BREAKING BAD

What it’s about:

There haven’t been any details released yet about the third season, but my guess is Walt and Jesse are either going to continue or discontinue cooking meth together. Also, if you haven’t seen the second season I don’t want to ruin it for you.

When it’s on:

Premieres in March on AMC.

Why you should watch:

Bryan Cranston and Aaro Paul always deliver powerhouse performances, and the twisted, dark subject material is riveting. Drugs, sex, violence, DEA agent brother-in-laws, babies, overdoses, and explosions in the sky are all examined. Got a boner yet?

OUR LITTLE GENIUS

What it’s about:

A gameshow that gives real child geniuses a chance to put their incredible knowledge to the test and win life-changing money for their families.

When it’s on:

UPDATE: FOX has just pulled this from the schedule for reshoots. We’ll let you know when you can tune into Kevin Pollak and some nerdy kids.

Tuesdays at 8:00PM E/P on FOX. Premieres Wednesday January 13th at 8:15PM E/P.

Why you should watch:

Any show stolen directly from Paul Thomas Anderson‘s film Magnolia should be given a shot. Plus host Kevin Pollak does a good De Niro impersonation.

LOST

What it’s about:

Mostly beautiful people stranded on a mysterious island struggle to discover the secrets of the bizarre happenings around them.

When it’s on:

Tuesdays at 9:00PM E/P on ABC. Premieres February 2nd.

Why you should watch:

For years, you’ve asked WTF? Now, in its final season… ALL. TF’s. WILL. BE. REVEALED. It’s either going to be brilliant or frustrating or a mix of both. At any rate, this is what we’ve all been waiting for.

JUSTIFIED

What it’s about:

U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens is a modern day 19th century-style lawman, enforcing his brand of justice in a way that puts a target on his back with criminals and places him at odds with his bosses in the Marshal service.

When it’s on:

Premieres in March on FX.

Why you should watch:

Watch the preview here and you will know. FX makes some kick ass shows and this one has great material based off of an Elmore Leonard novel. I’ve read the pilot and I can say with complete certainty that it will be worth your time.

THE SARAH SILVERMAN PROGRAM

What it’s about:

Sarah Silverman and her vagina get into hilarious scrapes.

When it’s on:

Thursdays at 10:30PM E/P on Comedy Central. Premieres February 4th.

Why you should watch:

Silverman’s womanchild will bungle through more controversial adventures while making us all wonder about the bigger questions. Like, what happened to that white dog poop from the ’70′s?

SOUTHLAND

What it’s about:

A raw look into the lives of Los Angeles police officers.

When it’s on:

Tuesdays at 10:00PM E/P on TNT. Season 1 premiered January 5th. Season 2 premieres March 2nd.

Why you should watch:

The sophomore season was deemed too gritty for NBC’s nine o’clock time slot so it was dropped (thanks Leno). Luckily, TNT stepped in and picked up the series. So get ready for an even more raw look at the raw streets of Los %#$&ing Rawngeles.

ARCHER

What it’s about:

Sophisticated super spies stab one another in the back every chance they get in this animated series.

When it’s on:

Thursdays at 10:00PM E/P on FX. Premieres January 14th.

Why you should watch:

H. Jon Benjamin loans his voice to the suave man from ISIS as he balances his job, a competitive ex-girlfriend, a domineering mother, and global calamities. Benjamin’s timing is flawless as evidenced by his work in Dr. Katz, Home Movies, and Freak Show amongst others.

CAPRICA

What it’s about:

Two prominent families fight over the ethical implications of using advances in artificial intelligence and robotic technologies to resurrect deceased loved ones. Essentially, Vicki from Small Wonder plants the seeds for the eradication of man.

When it’s on:

Fridays at 9:00PM E/P on SyFy. Premieres January 22nd.

Why you should watch:

The world Battlestar Galactica hinted at is laid out in sprawling detail in the prequel series. Early buzz is really positive for what is expected to be a hit.

Battlestar Galactica – This show is simply amazing. It’s beautifully written, the story is riveting, and Starbuck is hot. What more could a sci-fi fan want? Highly recommended. The box set is pretty cool, too. Every episode (some extended), every extra clip, commentary, and it came with it’s own Cylon. amazing
