Discovery Channel‘s Shark Week seems to be one of those things that gets discussed, praised, and shared far more than it actually gets watched. You know, like the last season of Arrested Development and that fun little shark-related jaunt Sharknado.

Judging by last night’s ratings, people are actually watching Shark Week. More people watched last night’s debut of Shark Week than EVER WATCHED ANY TELEVISION BROADCAST IN THE HISTORY OF THE MEDIUM. Just kidding. The Super Bowl and that M*A*S*H* finale are still pretty save. But it was the highest rating ever in the 27-year history of the annual Discovery Channel event. 27 years? They grow up so quick. If Shark Week was a person, it would already have graduated college, gotten its MBA, then moved back in with its parents because of the shitty job market.

Last night, the premiere pulled in (or “reeled in” if you want to be that way about things) 3.825 million viewers. While it’s possible that this year’s premiere night line-up was realyl strong, and marketed perfectly, I think this can simply be chalked up to the power of social media. Shark Week is one of those dumb things that people get all fired up about on The Twitter and The Facebook, tune in for an aggregate hour or so, then forgot the whole thing exists until next year, when people start hashtagging #hammerheadstrong or something like that.

Still, it managed to give us this, so…congratulations Shark Week, on all your success:

The discussion of representing other ethnicities and the boundaries of good taste will always be a source of much contention between people, but I think that we can all agree that we don’t want to see our white newscasters on MSNBC in sombreros, drinking fake tequila to “celebrate” Cinco de Mayo.

Because it’s insensitive? Maybe. Because it’s really, stupid and unprofessional? Yeah. Definitely that one.

On the Way Too Early show (I smell a Pulitzer based on the name alone), host Thomas Roberts shared the origins of the holiday (understandable) while his PRODUCER, ambled around in a big hat with a flask of what we all assume is tequila. Dude, a margarita is far less offensive.

Anyway, because it takes 90-120 days to apologize for something stupid and indefensible, MSNBC is just now getting their “I’m sorry”s out to an association of Hispanic journalists through an appearance by the network president at their annual convention.

They should also direct it to anyone with good taste who just wants to watch the news in the morning.

When you get in your childless mid-30s, Christmas takes on a pretty different dynamic. You’re too old for presents and the lore, almost too old to keep coming home, and you don’t have any younger offspring to pass the magic onto.

So, if you’re Seth Rogen, Lizzie Caplan, Anthony Mackie, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, you get together with your friends and drink. That’s my guess. The only thing really known about the plot is that the characters get together every Christmas and that Gordon-Levitt and Caplan have a romantic thing going on.

Anyway, it will be nice to see Rogen with an ensemble cast that wasn’t curated by Judd Apatow (though Rogen’s work with Kevin Smith was far worse in Zack and Miri Make a Porno) and Jonathan Levine did a great job with 50/50 starring Joe and Seth, so let’s hope this is capable of being funny and having a heart.

Cause, you know. It’s Christmas.

With all the build up after close to a decade off the air, the return of Arrested Development was a much-ballyhooed event that largely failed to live up to the hype. The “one character per episode” focus made everything seem pretty disjointed, and getting the cast in the same room seemed to be a lot more important than people expected.

So we’ll mercifully try it again, because even bad AD is better than no AD. Netflix president Ted Sarandos told USA Today that he’s “positive” the show’s going to return. That pop you just heard was the casting director’s head exploding trying to figure out how the hell everyone’s schedules will fit. Again.

Netflix had recentlyvoiced their desire for more episodes, so maybe this is Theodore’s way of making a self-sfulfilling prophecy. Michael Cera’s just his weak little pawn.

No word on premise yet, but it’ll probably revolve around the whole family just running around, being dicks to one another.

“If it ain’t broke…,” ya know?

Oh yes. Oh God, a thousand times yes. It was only a matter of time before the CBS parade of procedurals became self-aware and started intentionally hamming it up on a project level, as the stars (namely David Caruso) have been doing it for over a decade now.

As we had reported a few months back, CSI is returning to dazzle old people with the internet, hackers, and America Online with CSI: Cyber. Makes sense. Old people should learn about the internet before they die, and CBS already has their attention.

But now it’s got ours. CSI has hired everyone’s favorite actor of all time, James Van Der Beek, to play the ridiculously named Elijah Mundo, a hothead who plays by his own rules while typing or playing Candy Crush or something.

The details are not that important, but he’s on the show and will be a star. Looks like, against all odds, CSI gave us something to look forward to.

Who told Larry David it was ok to put his day job on the back burner to pursue new professional challenges? Ws it you? Because it’s SCREWING EVERYTHING UP.

Two days ago, it was announced that the Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm braintrust was heading to Broadway to star in a play about a death in the family called Fish in the Dark. Fine, whatever. Give something to the NYC tourists.

Welp, today it’s announced that with a March 5th premiere, and who knows how long the thing will run, David won’t be thinking about new Curb episodes until he’s shed this obligation. That’s bad, and it means it could be 18 months or so until we see his charming visage on TV. This isn’t the first delay in filming of the HBO comedy, and we can take solace in hoping that as long as he gets to set production of the show around his own schedule, he won’t have an excuse to ever stop doing it.

That might not be terribly helpful in learning more about this dude, so we gave a clip of Corden as a guest on a talk show, so just imagine he’s sitting on the other side and someone like, I dunno, Jason Segel is sitting where he is, promoting some movie.

I don’t know if this will endear Corden to viewers any more or less, but he’s also got a background in musical theater, so there will also probably be lots of…singing.

You missed Bill Cosby. You didn’t even know you did, but you did. With his crescendos into that high-pitched voice, the dancing while the eyes roll upward, and the sweaters. Oh those, glorious sweaters. Come January you won’t have to subsist on late night TV Land reruns any more. Sony, NBC and The Coz have gotten together to bring NBC a multigenerational sitcom, starring the comedian.

The project will star Cosby as Jonathan Franklin, a grandfather who lives with his extended family, yada, yada, patriarch, etc.

It’s going to be the Cosby show with more people. That’s what this sounds like. The show will be written and produced by TV veteran Mike O’Malley and will likely stick to the multicamera format, so it sounds like they’re not going for anything terribly groundbreaking here. Take Cosby, put him in front of a camera, let him do stuff.

That’s how you make a hit show.

And here’s this in celebration:

The Super Troopers guys are known for their high-concept stoner work so far, having put together the aforementioned Super Troopers, Beerfest, Club Dread, and all that jazz. But now they’re taking things a little more domestic with Quality Time, a pilot they’re preparing for TBS.

The show will feature fictionalized versions of the Broken Lizard (their comedy troupe) members’ lives.

Before you get too excited (I sensed you were getting excited) you should know that perhaps the most prominent member of the troupe, Jay Chandrasekhar, will not be joining them. He’s enjoyed a pretty strong career directing comedy in television, so he doesn’t have time for this crap. Just kidding. He will most likely be directing much of the effort, as he’s directed all of their films to date.

It sounds promising, since these guys will probably offer up a take on adulthood that you won’t get from Modern Family or the like.

Originally there were rumors that True Detective’s second season would feature two female leads. And then four leads. And now one of those leads could be Elisabeth Moss, who is indeed a female. And also an inspired choice.

She recently wrapped filming the final season of Mad Men, which would free her up to act all sulky and be puzzled by the occult on HBO. If the deal goes through, Moss will play Ani Bezzerides, a Monterey sheriff whose past troubles leave her wrestling with gambling and alcohol. She’s one of three cops investigating the brutal murder of a corrupt city manager whose body has been found along a stretch of highway with satanic symbols carved into his chest. Cases with satanic symbols are the most difficult to solve, as we learned in season one. If anyone’s up for the task, it’s the woman who figured out how to sell lipstick to other women. I’m guessing with the critical success of the first season of the crime anthology True Detective, a loooooong line of agents and publicists lobbied to get their fallen stars back on the A-list. I mean, first it was announced that Taylor Kitsch (not quite fallen, but hobbled by John Carter and Battleship) and Colin Farrell (lots of bad stuff) would be teaming up for the sophomore season.

Now…NOW word is that Vince Vaughn is circling a part in the show’s next outing on HBO. Vaughn hasn’t done anything approaching drama since Clay Pigeons and Psycho. That was 60 lbs. and like 15 schlubby roles ago. It’s time to get back on that horse, Vince.

There are currently no Wilson brothers cast to help him through this chore, but we’re guessing that will change, too. Can’t have Vince Vaughn without a Wilson brother.

In what’s shaping up to be tremendous news for people who like inconsequential news stories, Sharknado 2 has officially been deemed the highest rated original film ever on SyFy network. Is that an accomplishment?

Yes. It is because we say it is.

The stupid film starring Tara Reid managed to use the suggestibility of weak-willed audiences to garner 3.9 million viewers, which is far more than needed to watch a low-budget film about weather patterns consisting of sharks. The 3.9 million viewers generated 500,000 tweets meaning that very few people that watched Sharknado were doing so without asking for attention in their Sharknado watching.

And yes, this means there’s going to be a sequel. Good for Tara Reid, good for fledgling CGI shops, bad for people who watch things non-ironically and with sincerity.

The subject matter seems to be exclusively R-Rated, so this probably isn’t one for the toddlers. But, hey, they get Dora. Let us have this.

Ok, Netflix. You’ve gone too far. First you give us 16 seasons of The Killing when we politely asked you to stop, like, six times, and now you’ve turned orange prison jumpsuits into haute couture. Or so so says my favorite arbiter of fashion trends, Saginaw County Sheriff William Federspiel.

According to the Fantastic Mr. Federspiel, Orange is the New Black has given the outfits a “cultural coolness” that flies in the face of the deterrent aspect of the penal system. Next think you know, kids will be hanging out with a diverse cast of characters, who, despite their differences and issues, are all in this thing together and just have to make the best of it, ya know?

It will be anarchy.

The Sheriff has opted for black and white striped jumpsuits, so that the prisoners will not only recognize that prison jumpsuits AREN’T cool, but also that it’s the 1940′s.

He could probably crank that out quickly.

Every year, George R.R. Martin takes a break from not writing his A Song of Ice and Fire books to pen an episode of the TV adaptation, Game of Thrones. Maybe you’ve heard of it? And every season, you can bet that the episode Martin writes is a big one, with implications running through the rest of the series.

NOT THIS SEASON. Martin, who has been dealing with increasing criticism that he really needs to write these books before he dies, has opted out of writing an episode. Instead, he will focus on finishing The Winds of Winter, which is the next installment in the Song of Ice and Fire anthology.

For those unfamiliar, HBO’s Game of Thrones is based on Martin’s books, but the show seems to be adapting the books faster than Martin can make them. So, barring some glut of production from Martin, we will be forced to wait for him to write the books before more TV can be made. It’s crazy!

Waiting for a book for a TELEVISION SHOW? Everything is all crazy!

Keep writing, George. Faster.

At the Marvel panel at Comic-Con (which I’m guessing is a pretty big deal), it was announced, in the wake of news that James Gunn will be writing and directing the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel, that the franchise will also spinoff an animated series.

It’s no surprise that the series will air on Disney XD, considering the recent(ish) acquisition of Marvel by Disney. The property will join Avengers Assemble and Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., which are both getting picked up by the network for second seasons. Seriously, there’s a cartoon called Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., and it’s getting a second season.

Marvel is seems to be going fairly apeshit with its expansion since the Disney synergy emerged. In addition to the half-dozen secret movie release dates, they’ve got Daredevil on Netflix, Marvel’s Agent Carter coming to television, and probably fourteen other things I’m forgetting because there are just too damn many.

In the unfortunate event that you feel the amoral narcissists from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia do a better job of living their lives than you do yours, you can get some help from them. In the form of a self-help book called, The 7 Secrets Of Awakening The Highly Effective Four-Hour Giant, Today.

The premise of the book is quite convoluted, as the book description seems to be as much about the gang writing the book as it is about the book itself. Maybe because the publisher is hip enough to realize that anyone who buys this book isn’t in it for the genuine advice these lunatics might want to give, but rather is just interested in watching them fumble their way through another endeavor.

Whichever side you find yourself on, you can dig into this meaty beast on January 6th, just in time to be brimming with holiday and New Year regret. In the meantime, you can pre-order the tome here.

God help you if it’s come to this.

I’d heard rumors about Adult Swim‘s plans to create Mike Tyson Mysteries, an animated show starring Mike Tyson as himself teamed up with an alcoholic pigeon voiced by Norm Macdonald. Then it was something I dismissed, mistaking it for my own booze-induced fantasy. Turns out that it is real and I went through that 12-Step Program for no damn reason. Here’s a trailer that proves its existence as well as my ability to decide for myself that when I’ve had enough to drink.

For a show that basically lived on the verge of being cancelled, Community sure does take up a disproportionately high percentage of entertainment news. For instance, in addition to the “Will it get cancelled/Will it be brought back?” stories, we’ve also got things like this:

Community will not be released all at once, as is normally the M.O. with original series on streaming services. Rather, Yahoo Screen will offer up the show once a week, for 13 weeks. To let us know who’s boss.

If that wasn’t already brutal enough to your instant gratification desires, the show also won’t be popping up until around Christmas-time, so take a few months to go outside, take a walk, maybe interact with some people face to face.

Or just stick around your computer and watch Community get cancelled and brought back like 15 times between now and then.

Along I-25 in Albuquerque, keep an eye out for an innocuous-looking billboard that features a sharp, scrappy lawyer named James McGill. Mr. McGill, as Breaking Bad lore has it, will eventually become Saul Goodman, the shady lawyer that manages to insert himself into the biggest meth operation in the American southwest. This billboard comes up now during shooting of the Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul.

This pic was snapped by a commuter, so the billboard is up, and it’s likely that it’s serving as both a marketing device and a visual element of shooting.

In case you were wondering, the number on the billboard is real, so go ahead and give it a call. In case you’re all out of your anytime minutes, the line leads to a recorded message by Odenkirk as McGill.

Get excited for Better Call Saul, coming 2015.

In case you needed more proof that the days of TV being a dumping ground for washed-up movie stars are over, take a look at True Detective, then at HBO’s upcoming pilot Westworld. The new series, if picked up will star no less than Anthony Hopkins and noted Marilyn Manson-dater Evan Rachel Wood.

Westworld is a serial adaptation of a 1973 film written by Jurrassic Park’s Michael Crichton. The film was set at an amusement park, but I’m thinking over the course of the series, they may need to leave the amusement park now and again. J.J. Abrams Bad Robot studios is producing, because that’s what they do.

Hopkins will play the chairman of the park, and Wood will play a farm girl who discovers her life is a painfully constructed lie.

Sounds like an HBO show, all right!

The post ‘Fargo’ And ‘Louie’ Both Get Renewed By FX appeared first on Screen Junkies.

It was announced by FX this morning that the critically-acclaimed FX shows Louie and Fargo will be picked up for fifth and second seasons respectively. Fargo managed to get the network 18 Emmy nominations, which is the most in FX’s history, and Louie scored 5 nominations, including Best Comedy. And considering Louie looks like it costs about $7,200 per episode to make, it’s probably a good value to the network, even with a niche audience.

Fargo will be back with 10 episodes, and an entirely new cast and premise. No word on if it will still maintain its Fargo-ish setting, but I would hope so, otherwise they would call it Miami, or Denver, right?

Louie will be back in the spring after a LONG gap between seasons 3 and 4. However, the (relatively) relatively quick turnaround comes at a cost – the new season will consist of a scant 7 episodes.

He drew rave reviews for the script to Stoker, and now, he’s set to play Captain Cold. Prison Break star Wentworth Miller will join the CW‘s new Flash series as the guy who will be shooting cold guns at The Flash.

Miller will first appear as Leonard Snart aka Captain Cold aka The Guy Named After A Sneeze-Fart in the fourth episode. In the comics, Captain Cold is a character surprisingly layered despite what his moniker would suggest. He’s the leader of The Rogues, a criminal organization comprised of The Flash’s greatest enemies. He’s also a fan favorite and I’d expect viewers will see him recur as the series continues. Repurposed for evil, Wentworth Miller‘s blue-steel is going to cause a lot of destruction. (THR)

This past Sunday, at the Television Critics Association press tour, the producers of The Simpsons shared with the world their upcoming plans for the new season. Unfortunately, “making the show better, like in Season 6″ wasn’t one of their tactics.

Rather, they’re just gonna kill off some another character and do crossovers with Family Guy, which will be an hour-long episode (actually written by Family Guy writers, which we discussed here) and a new crossover with Futurama.

Ok. That’s all fine, I guess, but not very encouraging. The show has recently seemed to be more and more dependent on gimmicks, which is a sign, at least in my opinion, of desperation. However, the gimmick thing may be working, as the LEGO crossover got the show some of its highest ratings in the past few years.

However, it’s unlikely that a Futurama crossover would really expose the show to anyone who wouldn’t already be watching it anyway.

In case you were wondering about who was likely to die in the new season, it’s Krusty the Klown’s dad, Rabbi Hyman Krustofsky. So…

Yeah.

We won’t have to wait too long to see more of Deborah Ann Woll after True Blood ends its creepy monster porn run in the coming weeks. She’s headed over to Netflix for a lead role in Marvel’s Daredevil. Woll will play Karen Page, the love interest of Matt Murdock, the blind attorney who fights crime as the man without fear. I guess that makes him really good around women. If I were ever in a one-on-one conversation with Deborah Ann Woll, I’d be so intimidated that I stutter like a SQMY disc player before hiding behind a potted plant.

Woll has a unique connection to the role already. Her real-life boyfriend is losing his vision due to choroideremia and the two publicly campaign to fight the rare genetic disorder, which I guess spares him from having to watch this season of True Blood. (EW)
