James Cameron, never one to lack confidence in his own films, has some thoughts on the upcoming Avatar sequels. In short, he thinks that they’re “bitchin’” and if you see it, you will “shit yourself with your mouth open.”

Ugh. Now I’m not sure I want to see them. I mean, the thought of fouling myself at public theater is unpleasant enough, but to do so with my mouth open? That’s gratuitously awful.

Cameron made the remarks to Empire, who must have been delighted that the king of the world was happy to share such colorful thoughts with them.

If such a prospect doesn’t turn you off of the franchise entirely, we still suggest that you don’t hold it in in anticipation. The next several installments will film concurrently over the next few years, meaning that you’re likely going to have to hold it in for like four years or something. So go ahead and relieve yourself.

And for God’s sake, close your mouth when you do it.

Jimmy Fallon has made a name for himself with a number of recurring skits, exclusive to his show. But soon, perhaps his most famous musical bit the Lip Sync Battle will be heading over to Spike TV. It’s unclear if the show will feature celebrities, laypeople, or both, but it’s likely that no matter what, it will erode some of the charm of Fallon’s version, should he decide to continue it.

A host hasn’t been announced yet, but a premiere date has. April 2, 2015. So if you thought this was some sort of HILARIOUS April Fool’s joke, you’re a day off. This couldn’t be more real. Ever.

Here’s Stephen Merchant taking a brea from being the world’s worst person on Hello Ladies to do some fake singing:

While Netflix has rescued a network show or two in the past, this is a first. The Tina Fey-produced Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was set to roll out on NBC, but was just sent over to Netflix where it got a two-year commitment. Why? Maybe it’s because Netflix doesn’t mind shows with terrible names.

Rather than premiering in March on NBC, the Ellie Kemper-starring series about a woman who defects from a cult to move to NYC will debut on Netflix at the same time.

This sounds like a pretty promising premise from a great team, so let’s hope that a move to Netflix means the show will prove to be a more resilient than the fickle networks and that poor Kimmy Schmidt can find her way in the Big Apple.

That city will eat you alive. I’ve seen it happen a million times.

TBS and the ginger funnyman are going to meet you halfway with a primetime special on December 18th. It will be called Conan To Go, and it is likely slotted to recapture some of the rogue viewers who will be left to wander the late-night landscape after Stephen Colbert‘s departure in December. Like so many master-less samurai.

Ronin, if you will.

Conan To Go will be a compilation of bits and highlights from his first four years on TBS. However, if you’re looking for NBC era highlights, you can go straight to hell you are out of luck.

So tune in at 10/9C on the 18th, and prepare to have your funnybones shattered with jokes.

Hugh Laurie has been seen bombing around the Veep sets in D.C. in an acting capacity. It’s not known what role he’s playing, but the money is on him being the new veep, seeing as how Julia Louis-Dreyfuss’ Selina Meyer was made president this past season.

Laurie, despite his turn on the procedural drama House, is a comic actor by trade from the school of Blackadder, so he should fit right in with the rest of the impeccable comic cast.

By Jared Jones

Academy Award-winning director and nine time Tony winner Mike Nichols has passed away from a sudden cardiac arrest at the age of 83, ABC News reports.

Perhaps best known as the man behind such films as The Graduate and The Birdcage, Nichols actually broke into the mainstream as a comic when he and partner Elaine May scored the “Best Comedy Album” Grammy in 1961. It would be the first of many awards for Nichols, who aside from receiving the “Best Director” Oscar for The Graduate, earned a Golden Globe Award (also for The Graduate), an AFI Lifetime Achievement Award, and a tribute at the 2003 Kennedy Center Honors. At the age of 81, Nichols was also awarded the Tony for “Best Direction of a Play” for his revival of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, which starred the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. That’s right, Nichols was an EGOTer.

Nichols began his directorial career with the 1966 adaptation of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, which scored 5 Academy Awards and grossed 14.5 million dollars. It would be the first of many successes for Nichols, whose body of work would also include such massive hits as Wormwood, Working Girl, and Charlie Wilson’s War, his final picture.

After Wilson’s War, Nichols’ returned to Broadway — where it was announced that he was to direct Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz in a Broadway revival of Harold Pinter’s Betrayal — and eventually, to television. Having won Emmys for his direction of both Wit and Angels in America in 2001 and 2004, respectively, he was set to reunite with Silkwood star Meryl Streep for an upcoming HBO miniseries called Master Class.

Anyone who’s ever taken a film studies class has likely written a few words about The Graduate, whose satirical takedown of American society (and iconic soundtrack from Simon & Garfunkel) made it an instant hit among critics and fans alike and helped kickstart the “Hollywood Revival” between the mid-60′s and 70′s. The film also holds the honor of containing the 42nd most iconic movie quote in film history, “Plastics,” according to AFI’s 100 Years…100 Movie Quotes countdown.

“He was a true visionary, winning the highest honors in the arts for his work as a director, writer, producer and comic and was one of a tiny few to win the EGOT — an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony in his lifetime,” ABC News President James Goldston said in the statement. “No one was more passionate about his craft than Mike.”

Even those who aren’t up on their podcast comings and goings have likely heard of Serial. It follows one real-life murder case (that’s been resolved) with interviews and commentary. The new smash-hit podcast from This American Life is getting 1.3 million people listening to it every week, so naturally, studios and producers have come flocking wondering how they convert those ears into cold, hard cash.

This American Life ran for two seasons on Showtime with little fanfare, but it’s likely that Serial would be more of an event. It could go the True Detective route with its reboots every “season” or it could be a film, not unlike Gone Girl. Either way, it’s already an established franchise just a few weeks into its existence.

However, those behind the show say they’re not entertaining discussions until after the last episode has been released of this season, so we have some time to run around and speculate.

It’s no surprise that the cable news networks have jumped all over this Cosby sexual assault scandal that’s simmering. However, with very little to actually discuss, it seems that CNN, as it has often been doing, is just cutting loose anchors to talk about the issue at hand with no real direction or point.

In this instance, it was anchor Don Lemon interviewing Cosby assault accuser Joan Tarshis. He helpfully brought up, decades later, that Tarshis could have taken steps to not get (allegedly) raped.

HOW, YOU ASK?

I’ll just post an excerpt courtesy of Deadline:

“Meaning the using of the teeth, right?” Lemon persisted, for viewers at home.

“Yes, that’s what I’m thinking you’re –” Tarshis began.

“As a weapon,” Lemon continued.

“I didn’t even think of it,” Tarshis reiterated.

“Biting,” Lemon explained, for good measure.

Cable news, everyone.

Man, Lemon really wanted to drive that fun piece of info home. I’m sure if the accuser had just bitten Dr. Huxtable’s wang, then he would have seen the error of his ways, and let her go, not mad at her at all, and probably apologized. (Don Lemon also suggested something “supernatural” may have caused the disappearance of Malaysian flight 370, so you know he’s a professional.)

Don Lemon has since sort-of apologized for offending just about everyone in the world with his comments and tact, saying, “If my question to her struck ANYONE as insensitive I am sorry as that certainly was not my intention.”

He didn’t mean to be insensitive when he talked to the alleged rape victim about biting penises that have been forced in their mouth.

Really enjoying the next evolution of cable news. This is going really well for all involved.

Despite a slew of allegations regarding sexual misconduct over the past 2-3 decades, it’s just now that Bill Cosby is starting to feel some blowback. First, his NBC family sitcom got shelved, and now Netflix is following suit with its postponement/cancellation of his stand-up special Bill Cosby 77.

The man we once knew for gibberish utterances, pudding, and garish sweaters is now a lot more nefarious in the eyes of the public, so it’s an unfortunate time to release most any project with his name attached. His refusal to acknowledge the charges or discuss them definitely hangs in the air around him as well.

It would probably be pretty dark and misguided to accompany this news with the Cosby XXX porn trailer to create a moment of levity, but let’s just say that I acknowledge that conundrum, yet wish to do so anyway.

Tom Hardy is taking a step down from the silver screen, and getting in the TV game with Taboo. Of course, it’s his own TV show, so it’s not like he’s doing it cause he needs the cash. Taboo is a joint production between FX and BBC, and was written by Tom Hardy and his father, Chips.

The series is a period piece set in 1813 about a rogue adventurer. I don’t see what’s so taboo about that, but whatever. He then seeks vengeance on the East India Trading Company.

Ok then. That’s the series. It’s starting as an eight-episode run, though I think we could expect more if this thing overachieves, which it’s likely to do on FX. However, we won’t know until the series premieres in 2016.

You can read here for more of a description of the show, but suffice it to say that Anthony Hopkins, Jonathan Nolan, and some other folks are now either robots in the old west, or fighting robots in the old west. It’s about time.

TV execs, for one reason or another, have been really hurting themselves since The Hangover to get Rob Riggle his own show. He doesn’t seem to be a very strong candidate in that he’s not particularly likable, and his schtick, screaming at people, might get old after about 100 episodes.

Nonetheless, Fox is taking another crack at it with a take on Austria’s Braunschlag.

The show will follow a small town and its mayor (Riggle) as the town becomes insolvent and he attempts to save the town. It comes from Steve Hely, an alum of 30 Rock and The Office, so that’s promising.

They couldn’t have gotten Tracy Morgan to be the mayor? And every other character? That would be something I’d watch.

Anyway, the new show doesn’t have a name, but it’s a safe bet they’ll steer away from Braunschlag.

After Hannibal Buress called out Bill Cosby for the hypocrisy of acting as a shepherd to the black community while having endured more than a dozen rape allegations, Bull Cosby has been a topic of conversation for past acts, both previously reported and possibly a new one.

And it’s likely going to affect his upcoming NBC sitcom.

Here’s why: Networks don’t normally like to base flagship sitcoms around people who have been formally accused of sexual assault more than like, I don’t know, two times. After that, some red flags start to go up.

Well, those flags are up, and while no new legal action has been started, Cosby has refused to address the allegations at all. And while that might be a sound legal strategy, it likely won’t endear him to the American public, certainly not enough to make him a likable TV personality.

No word from Cosby or NBC yet, but I would bet this situation gets worse for Cosby before it gets better, and NBC eventually jumps ship to bring us like a semi-autobiographical series on Dan Cortese or something.

Chris Pratt shared an unpleasant truth with GQ during a long-form interview. It seems that he has no plans to return to his schlubby adorable body type made famous on Parks and Recreation. Rather, he’ll be staying skinny thanks to a regimen of fitness and the prohibition of awesome things like starches and booze.

In fact, he’s been maintaining this outlook since the summer, so there’s probably no change of heart now.

What he said directly to GQ, via Vulture is:

“I’m done with that,” he says. The week after we meet, he’ll be hosting the season premiere of SNL, so he’s on a no-starch (BOO) and no-booze (BOOOOO) diet. “I just feel like, if I drink, I want to drink a case of beer and not two beers. Two beers doesn’t do anything for me.” Attaboy. When I tell him I had pancakes for breakfast this morning, I see the ghost of Fat Pratt. “That sounds so goddamn good.”

If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to show the world what it means to be truly free by eating flapjacks covered in Brandy.

CBS has cancelled The Millers due to low ratings. Considering the reason, it’s likely you’re not familiar with the show. That’s ok, though, because it’s cancelled now. See how convenient circular logic can be sometimes?

Anyway, the show will be putting actors Will Arnett, Margo Martindale, Beau Bridges, and Sean Hayes on the street. Or looking for new acting jobs, if they’re motivated.

This should clear some space in Arnett’s schedule that will let him really focus on the 49 minutes per year he spends doing voiceover work as the star of BoJack Horseman, which will never get cancelled due to low ratings, if only because Netflix doesn’t concern themselves with such hogwash.

Netflix is about the art. And subscription fee revenue. But mostly the art.

God forbid something I don’t agree with is on the TV package I purchased! Fortunately, the Parents Television Council has a solution. Only package the shows THEY agree with, then make everyone else pay extra for the shows that the PTC doesn’t like or agree with.

It merits noting that they reiterated this stance after last week’s Sons of Anarchy. Because my impressionable children are always hijacking my remote without my knowledge and using it to watch violent biker programming. My kids are the worst. BUT I CAN’T CONTROL THEIR VIEWING!!!

So rather than put the onus of monitoring their children’s activities on parents, the PTC would like people to pay extra for depraved devil networks like FX and probably every other channel you watch.

Of course, we’re only getting attention to the group’s sideways crusade to be offended by whatever’s in front of them, so to counteract that lift, let’s offer up a criticism.

Nobody cares what the PTC thinks, because it is a group of lonely, purposeless people.

Rainn Wilson has been more or less quiet since walking away from the role of Dwight, killing all those spinoff rumors. But now he’s back. And, thanks to the braintrust behind Bones, he’s playing a pretty cliche character in Backstrom. Yay!

He’s genius detective who drinks, smokes, and plays by his own rules! Just like every other detective on TV these days. However, this is Rainn Wilson, and Rainn Wilson is funnier than most of the other actors on TV, so hopefully, this can outperform what it is on paper and really do him some justice.

But, judging by the trailer…maybe not?

Realizing that Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and Yahoo all fall woefully short of giving us the streaming services we demand, juggernaut Sony has jumped in the dogpile with Vue, a service that will run over Internet and through its Playstation device(s).

At launch, Vue will offer up to 75 channels, but of course they all won’t be original programming. And while this will clearly be done to drive more users to Playstations, it will also be a revenue stream, but no word on pricing or even the content offerings, just yet.

The channels will offer both a ton of live programming and on-demand, which, over 75 channels and more in the future, could mean that this thing is poised to become a monster.

A monster of entertainment.

There’s a lot of strife and anger in this country right now, but that’s all going to go away when Nick Cannon, NBC, and lots of celebrities team up to give us a new Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. Finally, a place we can go to get away from police shooting, net neutrality, and Monsanto to just kick back in a media room or enjoy a montage of luxury cars.

The original was hosted by Robin Leach, who was known for little else, but Cannon has something of a pedigree behind him as an MTV host, and the somewhat ubiquitous husband of Mariah Carey. Due to that fact, the producers have said that the show will “focus heavily on Cannon’s point of view.”

That’s actually probably good news, since the original was stuck in “Whoa! Look at this”-mode. After having been through Cribs, The Fabulous Life of…, and It’s Good to Be, we’re a little jaded. Unless someone has a cocaine room in their house or is actually having sex WHILE giving the tour, it’s old hat to us. Don’t try to impress us. We’ve seen Big Boi’s shark.

The funny thing about the world of musicals and theater is they’re directed, written, performed, choreographed, and produced by gay people, more so than other industries are. So it’s pretty interesting that the Duck Dynasty guys are throwing some elbows and entering that world as they continue their takeover of redneck America. And the natural capital of redneck America is, of course, Las Vegas.

The Robertson family will be getting their tale told with all sorts of jukin’ and jivin’ with The Duck Commander Family Musical at the Rio. And one of the producers, according to Vulture, isn’t too pleased with his co-workers after their remarks last year. But, Broadway veteran Michael David is a pro, so he’s grinning and bearing the family and their baggage in the spirit of “the show must go on.”

No word on when the musical premieres, but not soon enough, amiright?

This was all done in honor of an appearance by the cast and creator of Sons of Anarchy on the show, which was equally surreal.

After some really long shots of Conan trying his best to look menacing, the rest of the intro is him getting throw out of various storefronts. Or a stuntman with a Conan wig, if you want to be cynical about it.

In a story that has little pop culture or media significance, but allows me to make fun of the title Franklin & Bash for one last time, it’s my bittersweet duty to report that Franklin & Bash has been cancelled by TNT after the network declined to pick the show up for a fifth season.

Franklin was four years old at the time of the announcement.

So was Bash.

Rather than mourn their absence, let’s celebrate their lives. Franklin was…Franklin was the Zack Morris one, I think, which would make Bash Breckin Meyer. Or the other way around. I know it was Zack Morris and Breckin Meyer. They were lawyers. That’s really all I have to celebrate. I never watched the show. But I’ll be damned if I’m not gonna miss those promos while watching NBA games this season.

The show suffered from falling ratings, and this past season premiere was off 60% from the previous one; never a great sign. Yet Rizzoli and Isles still get to strut around like they own the place. Those bitches.

IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN YOU, RIZZOLI AND ISLES! IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN YOU!!!

*checks ratings on Wikipedia*

Never mind. The ratings for Rizzoli and Isles were way better. Turner made the right call.

The post Amazon Rolls Out Seven New Shows, Forcing Us To Take It Seriously appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
Refusing to live in the shadow of Netflix as an also-ran, Amazon, fresh off some critical and commercial acclaim from the sleeper hit Transparent, has bet big on original programming by announcing seven new shows.

Fortunately, they doled out a handy little press release (via Vulture) that means I won’t have to interpret anything. Perfect.

Cocked: An hourlong dark comedy about a gun-loving family whose liberal prodigal son returns. True Blood‘s Sam Trammell plays the son who swore he’d never come back to Virginia; Jason Lee plays the son who never left.

Down DogA hunky yoga instructor’s life starts to crumble in this half-hour sitcom. Paget Brewster plays his boss/ex, and Kris Kristofferson also appears.

Mad Dogs: In the slightly higher-profile department, this hourlong dark comedy stars Steve Zahn, Billy Zane, Romany Malco, Michael Imperioli, and Ben Chaplin as a group of high-school friends who reunite in Belize — and then things get a little out of control. The show’s based on a U.K. series, and The Shield‘s Shawn Ryan is among its executive producers.

The Man in the High Castle: Written by The X-Files‘ Frank Spotnitz, this hourlong drama is based on the Philip K. Dick book of the same title. It’s an alternate history in which the Axis forces won World War II.

The New Yorker Presents: The half-hour series brings articles from The New Yorker to life. Amazon’s calling it a docu-series, but it sounds like a combination of formats, including straight documentary and short-film adaptations of fiction and poetry.

Point of Honor: An hourlong Civil War drama that centers on a the son of a powerful southern family who decides to both free his family’s slaves and still fight for the Confederacy. Written by Lost‘s Carlton Cuse and directed by byBraveheart writer Randall Wallace.

Salem Rogers: Leslie Bibb stars in the half-hour comedy about a former supermodel who has spent ten years in rehab. The cast includes Rachel Dratch, Jane Kaczmarek, Harry Hamlin, Brad Morris, Scott Adsit, and Toks Olagundoye.

Wow. These aren’t filler, nor do they sound low-budget. It looks like Amazon is going to make a real run at Netflix in 2015. And while having Netflix as the one-stop shop is convenient, a little healthy competition is a good thing, and the competition that Amazon appears to be bringing in is healthy to say the least.

I mean, they got Zane. ZANE.

Pretty funny stuff, actually. Transportation agencies in New York and LA aren’t allowed to have a sense of humor, and must think of the children, so the ads have been pulled off buses, stops, benches, and all that jazz.

However, the fact that I’m now writing about the show means that the advertising DID work. Very clever. Bravo, Bravo.

Haunting.

Sneaky Pete follows a man who assumes a new identity out of jail, hides out from the mob, and helps arrest criminals for some reason. It likely won’t star Cranston, but maybe we could get a little Badger for our troubles?

What we’re all hoping is that Cranston won’t take on any big commitments because he’s going to become a regular on Better Call Saul, which will pretty much turn into a Breaking Bad prequel with all the characters in some sort of parallel universe.

The show will see guests coming through to talk, play, and do whatever else people do with Willie Nelson.

No channel has picked the show up yet, but apparently several cable networks are interested. I see this as a SpikeTV endeavor with a ton of blurred out images of people smoking pot and mumbling. That is to say, I see it like I see every other SpikeTV show.

“I’ve loved every minute I’ve spent in television. And I’ve had much more failure, as traditionally measured, than success in television. I’ve done four shows, and only one of them was The West Wing.”

So after SportsNight, West Wing, Studio 60 (UGH!), and The Newsroom, we’re going to see Aaron Sorkin transition wholly to the realm of film. Right after he writes the live version of A Few Good Men for for NBC.
