From the look of things, Dexter‘s been getting the cold shoulder from his sister who has chosen the comforts of awesome sex and recreational drugs over eating steaks with her creepy murderer brother who wears a lot of peach. Meanwhile, everyone in Miami who is not a homicide detective are suspicious that Dexter may be the Bay Harbor Butcher making it more and more difficult for him to track down and eliminate whoever is going around town removing people’s brains.

All in all, the once creepy show looks much more palatable. By that, I mean at least they’ve scaled back on the bronzer from last season.

Mitch Hurwitz Is Just Now Finishing The ‘Final Mix’ Of The ‘Arrested Development’ Episodes http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/mitch-hurwitz-is-just-now-finishing-the-final-mix-of-the-arrested-development-episodes/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/mitch-hurwitz-is-just-now-finishing-the-final-mix-of-the-arrested-development-episodes/#comments Thu, 16 May 2013 21:01:12 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=254885 In an effort to slowly transition into an “all A.D., all the time” news site, we’re (read: I’m) ramping up the coverage of the show in a shameless attempt to capture traffic from people searching for the show in anticipation of the new season coming out over Memorial Day weekend.

That’s actually not true at all. We write about it because it’s the best comedy of the past million years, and stories about Arrested Development are largely more interesting than stories about anything else.

This one is no exception.

After months of rumors (that I apparently had never heard) that the new season of A.D. was going to be constructed in such a fashion that the episodes can be played in any order, it turns out that creator Mitch Hurwitz has taken to Twitter to deny that.

Oh well. As far as I’m concerned, the first three seasons can be watched in any order with a such a small drop-off of enjoyment that I’m pretty sure this next season will be the same thing.

Unless the season sucks.

OH NO!

HBO Picks Up A Mike Judge Comedy Series. YAY! http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/hbo-picks-up-a-mike-judge-comedy-series-yay/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/hbo-picks-up-a-mike-judge-comedy-series-yay/#comments Thu, 16 May 2013 18:11:21 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=254879 No one that have any respect for would ever balk at the idea of having more Mike Judge entertainment in our lives, so let’s all get on the same page and rejoice that HBO has picked up a comedy from the Beavis and Butthead creator that follows Silicon Valley execs during the dot-com heyday.

The show, so far untitled, has a murderer’s row of comedians, including T.J. Miller, Thomas Middleditch, Josh Brener, Lindsey Broad, Christopher Evan Welch, Amanda Crew, Angela Trimbur, ZachWoods and Kumail Nanjiani. But those guys will be pretty funny!

The tagline that has been bandied about here is “the people most qualified to succeed are the least capable of handling success.” Ugh. That describes every Aaron Sorkin project ever. Of course, it’s Mike Judge, so we needn’t worry.

You know, staplers, and whatnot.

The Final Season Of ‘How I Met Your Mother’ Will Take Place Over One Weekend http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/the-final-season-of-how-i-met-your-mother-will-take-place-over-one-weekend/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/the-final-season-of-how-i-met-your-mother-will-take-place-over-one-weekend/#comments Thu, 16 May 2013 17:46:25 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=254875 If you like TV shows about with funny casts and a protagonist who whines about never finding a wife, then you’ll be very interested to know the final season of How I Met Your Mother will take place over just one weekend in the show’s universe.

Soooo… (SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN SEASON 8 FINALE)

If Ted doesn’t find his wife over the course of this weekend, I’m pretty sure this announcement allows us to bludgeon the producers, the cast, and most any other person on the planet out of sheer frustration.

It’s anticipated that the future wife/mother will be played by Cristin Milioti, and it’s been revealed that Ted will be the last of his friends to meet her, possibly because he’s a whiney tool, possibly because it helps the story.

However, you’ll have to make peace with your decision knowing that there is a fake Tobias Fünke website out there that serves the fictitious purpose of promoting a closeted homosexual’s fledgling acting career.

‘From Dusk Till Dawn’ TV Adaptation Will Be The Flagship Of Robert Rodriguez’s El Rey Network http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/from-dusk-till-dawn-tv-adaptation-will-be-the-flagship-of-robert-rodriguezs-el-rey-network/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/from-dusk-till-dawn-tv-adaptation-will-be-the-flagship-of-robert-rodriguezs-el-rey-network/#comments Tue, 14 May 2013 21:11:50 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=254855 I think it says something about your new network when the flagship series is the TV adaptation of a violent film that involves killing sprees, rape, and Salma Hayek putting her foot in Quentin Tarantino’s mouth.

Yet here we are as Robert Rodriguez divulges that the adaptation will be the backbone of his El Rey Network, which is an English-language station that will be geared towards Hispanic audiences. Already, I can hear hipsters salivating over the prospect of enjoying this channel ironically, spilling their taco truck tacos all over their vests and mustaches.

What a bloodbath.

Bill Hader Is Making His ‘SNL’ Exeunt http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/bill-hader-is-making-his-snl-exeunt/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/bill-hader-is-making-his-snl-exeunt/#comments Tue, 14 May 2013 16:25:49 +0000 Wookie Johnson http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=254843 After eight years of laughter, fun, Muppet voices, and the occasional spotty Al Pacino impression, Bill Hader is officially ready for prime-time. Meaning that he’s leaving SNL. Hader doesn’t exactly have anything on the books to pull him away from the show but just felt that it was time. Those Rockefeller Center crowds can really wear you down. Hader told the New York Times, “It was a hard decision, but it has to happen at some point. It got to a point where I said, ‘Maybe it’s just time to go.’”

Yesterday came news of Seth Meyers plans to move down the hall, it’s suspected that Jason Sudeikis will leave to focus on film work, and Fred Armisen’s future with the show is uncertain. Unfortunately, there have been no reports that Kenan Thompson plans to depart.

Seth Meyers To Take Over ‘Late Night With Jimmy Fallon’; Carson Daly Still Just Doing The Same Thing http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/seth-meyers-to-take-over-late-night-with-jimmy-fallon-carson-daly-still-just-doing-the-same-thing/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/seth-meyers-to-take-over-late-night-with-jimmy-fallon-carson-daly-still-just-doing-the-same-thing/#comments Mon, 13 May 2013 12:10:58 +0000 Wookie Johnson http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=254827 With Jay Leno leaving The Tonight Show for real this time and Jimmy Fallon taking over those hosting duties, NBC has confirmed suspicions that Seth Meyers will replace Fallon as Late Night host. “It always seemed like a logical next move,” says the SNL veteran and Weekend Update host. “It was just competing with the very emotional idea of leaving a place I have been for a very long time. But if you are going to do that, it seems like you might as well just move a hallway or two.” Makes sense. He probably won’t even need to hire movers.

Meyers will wrap up SNL’s fall season before moving to Late Night this winter, and then probably return to SNL when Leno decides he’s not giving up The Tonight Show after all. (NY Times)

John McCain Doesn’t Think We Should Pay For Cable Channels We Don’t Want http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/john-mccain-doesnt-think-we-should-pay-for-cable-channels-we-dont-want/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/john-mccain-doesnt-think-we-should-pay-for-cable-channels-we-dont-want/#comments Fri, 10 May 2013 19:08:37 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=254797 Finally, a politician addresses a meaningful topic. Like television. John McCain has been addressing flaws in the current cable hegemony for several years now, but over the past few days he’s made even more noise regarding their practices.

Namely, he doesn’t like that cable bundles force us to buy channels we don’t want or use. It’s a familiar criticism, but one that’s unlikely to change due to the power of cable companies, McCain’s distance from the Senate Commerce Committee, and the fact that the cure might be worse than the disease.

Should cable companies unbundle, subscribers will have to shell out big bucks for their favorite channels like ESPN, FX, AMC, USA, TNT, and TBS, forcing them to realize that maybe they weren’t paying all that much for the Lifetime Movie Network in the first place.

The plan McCain is sponsoring is called the Television Consumer Freedom Act. The phrase “Television Consumer” makes me think of a fat person on the couch watching Anger Management, and “Freedom” makes me think that person is holding a tiny USA flag while doing so.

BBC Remaking ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/bbc-remaking-everybody-loves-raymond/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/bbc-remaking-everybody-loves-raymond/#comments Thu, 09 May 2013 17:17:27 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=254776 The joke is in the headline people. I don’t know why this is so amusing to me – the show did phenomenally well, and comforted millions of American Airlines passengers during gate holds and holding patters – but I just think it’s funny that no one could come up with an original take on the premise of a schlubby guy and his mean wife and parents.

“We’re in way over our bloody heads here. Let’s just license Raymond.”

(That’s how I imagine the BBC producers addressing the issue. You can tell they’re British because of their colorful language.)

It’s called The Smiths, and it will star Catherine Tate and Lee Mack as the schlubmaster general.

Of course, Russia already took to adapting Raymond, which tells us that a) TV execs aren’t very creative in other countries either, and b) lots of audiences worldwide hate their families.

It’s also of little surprise that they will probably find invaluable something a 17 year-old invents.

Enter Twivo, an app that strips all the spoilers from your Twitter timeline. Actually, it removes all references to TV shows and characters that you select, leaving you with a Twitter feed that’s probably just a bunch of pictures of food with the hashtags #belieber and #selfie.

SOOOOOO, if, for instance, you didn’t want to know that (SPOILER ALERT FOR REALS) Jamie Lanister lost his hand right before a bitchin’ Hold Steady cover of “The Bear and the Maiden Fair,” then you would probably pull “Jamie Lannister” and “Game of Thrones” from your Twitter feed using the app.

You can now find the app as a Chrome plug-in, but expect to see Twivo as a standalone app sometime around the end of this sentence.

May I editorialize?

Thank you.

Veep is perhaps the funniest half-hour of TV on…TV. You know how people like funny shows that offer up a lot of heart as well? Those people didn’t like this show because this show hadn’t shown any heart. Until the last episode which offered an ending that leads the audience to believe that Selina Meyer MIGHT care about the decisions she makes, and her political career isn’t just one giant game.

While the show serves as a pretty bleak vantage point of contemporary politics, it doesn’t have to. You CAN just like the show because it’s a bunch of inept, weird people cursing at each other and their fun idiosyncrasies.

I promise no more editorializing for ten days, at least.

Abrams is actually 15 different, diligent movie and TV producers, the fears that he’s spreading himself a little thin these days seem to be more and more grounded in reality. Beyond the upcoming Star Trek and Star Wars, he’s got a gaggle of TV shows he’s producing, which may have grown by one over the weekend, as he’s looking at Stephen King’s time-traveling saga 11/22/63 to adapt into a mini-series or TV show.

The premise of a school teacher traveling back to the 1960′s to stop the assassination of JFK seems to be right up Abrams’ alley with both the time traveling and the elements of 1960′s culture.

This announcement should keep Abrams’ attention until next week, when he will get behind a gritty reboot of Mario Bros. or something.

The film will be based on graphic novels of the beast which paint the MONSTER as endearingly human and vulnerable. So that’s where the similarities to Seth Rogen stop, apparently. Just kidding. JUST KIDDING. He’s likable in small-to-moderate doses.

Rogen will be teaming up with his writing partner Evan Goldberg and American Dad writer Matt McKenna, so…expect a comedy?

Confidential left off.

This isn’t his first stab at the undertaking, having developed a pilot in 2003 that never went anywhere, but that’s back when TV was terrible, and now it’s really good. Which means it should be made on a cable network, possibly on, I don’t know, a Sunday night?

Assuming it does get picked up, it probably won’t find its way to FX, where they’re developing Shakedown, a similar concept about tabloids and corruption in LA in the late 1950′s.

I think there’s room for two shows this awesome on TV at the same time. (A.V. Club)

MTV has announced that they’ve given the green light to a television pilot based on the Scream films. Written by Kevin Williamson and directed by Wes Craven, the Scream films are best known for skewering horror movie tropes as well as literally skewering attractive teens. In a news release, the network said it was working with Dimension to “reinvent the successful horror comedy franchise that spawned three sequels and unleashed ‘Ghostface’ to a legion of unsuspecting fans.” While the network is still speaking with writers, Dimension is still working on a deal to have Craven return to direct the one-hour pilot.

I’d imagine that the series would be presented as a season long mystery as the audience tries to figure out the identity of the masked killer (or killers) that is terrorizing the student body. However, I’m not sure the format can sustain that concept with more and more of the cast being killed off each episode. The Scream movies have always managed to keep it fresh and subvert expectations, so let’s hope the eventual series will be able to do the same. At the very least, let’s hope it’s better executed than Teen Wolf. (NY Times)

‘Dexter’ Sets Up His Final Kill Room In Latest Teaser http://www.screenjunkies.com/video/dexter-sets-up-his-final-kill-room-in-latest-teaser/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/video/dexter-sets-up-his-final-kill-room-in-latest-teaser/#comments Thu, 25 Apr 2013 19:05:24 +0000 Wookie Johnson http://www.screenjunkies.com/?post_type=video&p=254562 We’ve already been treated to a few teasers for the upcoming season of Dexter, but now that it’s confirmed to be its final, expect a much more aggressive push. So far, new footage has been kept to a minimal so in the meantime we can enjoy these stylistic recap spots which is okay, because it’s now hitting home that Dexter is ending. That means no more kill rooms, no more blood slides, no more convenient reasons to get Harrison out of town. And after this season, there will be no more Dexter teasers. We always knew Miami would run out of serial killers eventually, but now that that day is here, it feels weird.

We’re Getting A Dodgeball Sequel From Ben Stiller http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/were-getting-a-dodgeball-sequel-from-ben-stiller/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/were-getting-a-dodgeball-sequel-from-ben-stiller/#comments Mon, 22 Apr 2013 23:48:51 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=254519 While it seems like the sort of idea that would go direct-to-DVD with perhaps Dane Cook taking on the lead Vince Vaughn role, Mr. Ben Stiller has decided to shepherd along a sequel to the hit (I guess) film Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story. Writing duties will be shouldered by Clay Tarver, but when people throws balls at each other, the stories sorta write themselves, no?

Both Stiller and Vince Vaughn will be returning, teaming up against an even bigger threat (terrorism?), so bring your shades, cause you’ll get blinded by all this starpower!

No other news is available, but I’m comfortable guaranteeing that Lance Armstrong will not be making an appearance.

Ringling Brothers Not Thrilled With HBO’s Doc On Elephant Abuse http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/ringling-brothers-not-thrilled-with-hbos-doc-on-elephant-abuse/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/ringling-brothers-not-thrilled-with-hbos-doc-on-elephant-abuse/#comments Mon, 22 Apr 2013 21:43:08 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=254513 HBO has in its pipeline a documentary called An Apology to Elephants. Oof. Just judging from that title, you can tell this thing won’t be friendly to a firm that uses elephant for entertainment purposes.

And judging by Ringling Bros claims that the HBO doc is “one-sided,” you would be totally correct. Variety is reporting that HBO initially wished to discuss with Feld, the parent company of the circus, their involvement in both conservation, as well as the use of elephants in their circus. However, they later scrapped that plan, telling Feld that they didn’t want to focus on the conservation issue, presumably just the nasty stuff.

The circus spokesman claimed that HBO may “clearly have an anti-circus political agenda.”

But where do they stand on capades, both ice and regular?

‘Futurama’ Gets Cancelled Again http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/futurama-gets-cancelled-again/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/futurama-gets-cancelled-again/#comments Mon, 22 Apr 2013 18:07:02 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=254504 After some time on Fox, time spent in Adult Swim rerun purgatory, some DVD movies, and then a whole slew more new episodes on Comedy Central (52, precisely), it looks like the plug will be pulled on Futurama after the end of this season, number seven.

While its reincarnation hasn’t made many waves outside the scope of the original fanbase, that rabid fanbase was good enough for a huge second time around for the show, which managed to keep much of its production and voice cast intact despite the obvious lag between iterations.

It’s all over now. At least, until someone else sees Futurama as an opportunity to capture a market segment that’s eluded them until now. NBC, that’s your cue to do something reckless and crazy.

GO!

The First Still From Breaking Bad’s Final Eight Episodes Gives Us Enough Info To Speculate Illogically http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/the-first-still-from-breaking-bads-final-eight-episodes-gives-us-enough-info-to-speculate-illogically/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/the-first-still-from-breaking-bads-final-eight-episodes-gives-us-enough-info-to-speculate-illogically/#comments Sun, 21 Apr 2013 18:54:12 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=254476 In the current drought of Breaking Bad episodes, and the certain vacuum to follow, let’s take what we can get and overanalyze the shit out of it, regardless of where our findings take us.

Here we’ve got a still featuring Walt seemingly pleading with Jesse, with Jesse looking all, “Talk to the hand girlfriend.” Or maybe he’s looking all, “I ate too much Lotaburger, and I was supposed to cleanse today. I hate myself.”

In any event, one guy looks desparate and one guy looks nonplussed, which makes this still no different than every other frame of film that’s manifested itself in seasons 1-4.5.

Here’s the pic. LET THE GREAT EXPERIMENT BEGIN!

‘Friends’ Reunion That Internet Just Up And Proposed Is ‘Not Happening’ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/friends-reunion-that-internet-just-up-and-proposed-is-not-happening/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/tv/tv-news/friends-reunion-that-internet-just-up-and-proposed-is-not-happening/#comments Wed, 17 Apr 2013 16:31:32 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=254441 Not speaking in vague terms that a producer normally might to leave the door cracked for a sequel, former Friends producer Marta Kaufman said in response to rumors/requests for a Friends reunion, “I’m going to clear this up right now: No. Not happening.”

So you’re saying there’s a chance, Marta? Oh. No. You’re not.

This means no Friends movie, no Friends reboot, no Friends sequel. It’s a sad state of affairs when we feel the need to report that some beloved old property such as this refuses to let itself go around the bend again, but it’s also pretty nice.

Friends was really good. Let’s enjoy the place it occupies in our hearts and memories and use the effort we would have spent recycling it into making something better.

Like, I dunno, an Arrested Development movie or something.
