By Jared Jones

I’m going to go out on a limb here and make a statement that will likely draw some controversy: Flight of the Conchords are *the* best two-piece, New-Zealand based comedy band of them all, and that includes Kiwi Calamari Express, The Sheep Shearers, and Liam Blake and the Aquada Speedsters. I know, hot taek.

When the Conchords’ two-season run on HBO ended back in 2009, it left a massive void in the New-Zealand based comedy rock genre to say the very least. The fan outcry for more was deafening, which of course led to the usual tease of a reunion/movie that all cult shows like FOTC are given before everything inevitably falls apart. But now, it appears that Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie actually might be heading back into our television lives. Surely my restraining order is in the process of being lifted! (I am being told that the restraining order shall remain.)

Clement spilled the goods in a recent interview with The Guardian while discussing his upcoming vampire spoof flick What We Do in the Shadows:

Are the Conchords, dormant at the moment, waiting to erupt again? “We talk about a movie every so often,” says Clement. “Sometimes it feels like we lost a lot of impetus over the last couple of years. But Bret, James [Bobin, lead director] and me, we all want to do a musical. It would be good to do something all together…I miss playing Flight of the Conchords gigs.”

HBO have commissioned a new, four-episode comedy show, he reveals. “It was supposed to be this year but then we decided to put What We Do in the Shadows out ourselves.”

There’s only one way to celebrate this news. Commence with the music videos!

[UPDATE] 9/3

You remember what I was saying about cult shows always teasing reunions and movies only to never deliver on them? Yeah, this right here:

Believe it or not, Phil Lord and Chris Miller are preparing to run another ’80′s property through the Qualitizer. They’ll next prove their unique talent for shining turds with an update of The Greatest American Hero, the comedy-drama that made star William Katt a household name. You know. William Katt? The guy with the hair? Anyway, it was the show with the theme song that George Constanza based his answering machine message on.

Lord and Miller are teaming with Tawnia McKiernan, daughter of Greatest American Hero creator Steven J. Cannell, to executive produce a new version of the show. 22 Jump Street and Late Night with David Letterman writer Rodney Rothman will handle scripting on the series about a school teacher who gains superpowers via a spandex costume from outer space. Only a matter of time before Lord and Miller put Charles back in charge. (Deadline)

While Weezer has, by most critical and commercial accounts, been on a downward slide since Maladroit, it makes sense that the principals of the band would examine other opportunities, and lead singer Rivers Cuomo found one…

In a comedy pilot called DeTour that he has sold to Fox. Now, it’s just a pilot, which means it’s about as valuable as, well, nothing, but it could get picked up. We’ll let you judge its worth.

The comedy focuses on a 30-something rockstar who, according to Deadline (via the A.V. Club), “unable to rationalize his success and worried that he may not have the tools to repeat it, walks away from the spotlight at the height of his fame in an effort to rediscover the parts of his life he missed while he was busy becoming a massive success.”

So it MIGHT be a little autobiographical. Maybe. No word on the status of the pilot, but we should know something later this year. If it gets us a respite from the torrent of Weezer releases, we’re all for it.

The non-stop Simpsons marathon on FXX has catapulted the network into the top 5 cable channels, and, wanting to keep that momentum past the 12-day marathon, the network has announced that it will be all-Simpson, all-the-time.

Almost.

5 nights a week, it will air at least four hours of Simpsons, ensuring that there will ALWAYS be something good on during primetime. This will leave a little sliver carved out for Parks and Recreation reruns, and you can just backfill the rest of your day with work and sleep.

It’s a brilliant system, and just another step towards what I’m calling the Simpsons Renaissance of 2014.

The schedule will be as follows:

Mondays will be 6PM-12AM

Tuesdays will be 8PM-12AM

Wednesdays will be free time (feel free to go to a bar, speak with your family, watch DVR’d Simpsons reruns…whatever)

Thursday will be  6PM-12AM

Fridays will be 8PM-12AM

Saturdays will be free time (exercise, eat some oatmeal)

Sundays will be 4PM-8PM

Enjoy the schedule that will now dictate the rest of your life.

As if Louis C.K. and Zach Galifianakis didn’t have enough going on in their professional lives, they’re adding one more project to the pile as FX announced that they’re picking up Baskets, a show about…clowning.

The ten episode pickup revolves around a man named Chip Baskets, played by Zach G., who becomes disillusioned with his 9-5 life, and enrolls in a prestigious clown college in France, only to fail out, then relegated to life as a rodeo clown.

I don’t have much more to go on, but even if I did, would I need to? It’s a show about Zach Galifianakis as a clown college dropout.

Louis C.K. is a co-creator and the show will begin filming next year for a premiere in 2016, probably.

In a sad testament to how real the dangers of the reality television forerunner Cops really are, a longtime cameraman for the show, Bryce Dion, died of a gunshot injury in a shootout between police and a gunman. The showdown took place outside an Omaha-area Wendy’s where police confronted an armed robbery suspect.

The gunman was also killed after sticking up the Wendy’s only to find the police, and the film crew waiting outside. A shootout followed, which apparently left the fast food restaurant’s windows riddled with bullet holes and two men mortally injured.

The crew had been in Omaha filming for much of the summer for Spike TV, which has been airing the show after it was dropped by FOX.

There aren’t many more details available as of now, but what more is really needed? A tragic incident that, sadly, is not surprising, given the show’s history of putting film crew in harm’s way.

The post Recent Interview With ‘Sopranos’ Creator David Chase Indicates Tony Soprano Isn’t Dead appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
You probably haven’t thought about Tony Soprano’s fate in a few years, have you? At least, probably not since the tragic death of James Gandolfini. Well, in an interview with Vox (caveat emptor, the article is VERY long), David Chase revealed that Tony Soprano isn’t dead.

But it’s not really that open-and-shut. The exchange between the interviewer and Chase sounds like a real nightmare, as excerpted by Vulture:

I had been talking with Chase for a few years when I finally asked him whether Tony was dead. We were in a tiny coffee shop, when, in the middle of a low-key chat about a writing problem I was having, I popped the question. Chase startled me by turning toward me and saying with sudden, explosive anger, “Why are we talking about this?” I answered, “I’m just curious.” And then, for whatever reason, he told me. …
…[W]hen he spoke about Tony and the question, [Chase] was laconic.
Just the facts and no interpretation.
He shook his head “no.” And he said simply, “No he isn’t.”

Well, there you have it. An interviewer pestered David Chase about the fate a of a character who was played by a close friend of Chase’s who died, and he snapped and blurted something out.

Whether or not this was a sincere response then begs the question of whether or not this take is revisionist based on the death of Gandolfini. Who knows. It’s likely that David Chase didn’t even know if Tony lived or died at the end, and if that’s the case, we might as well ask a person working at Starbucks what the mob boss‘ fate was.

It didn’t take long for Netflix to re-up on Bojack Horseman, the animated comedy featuring Will Arnett as a washed-up former actor horse, surrounded by lots of familiar voices and close to no plot. Netflix, aside from Arrested Development, hasn’t has a lot going on for original comedies, and it’s a safe bet that Bojack didn’t require a House of Cards-type budget, so sure. Why not?

Netflix doesn’t share its “ratings” with the public because it doesn’t have any advertisers to satisfy, but whatever criteria they were using must have been met, because that was a pretty quick decision to give the show 12 more episodes. No date has been set yet, but just be patient, ok?

I’m about four episodes into the series, and it’s…it’s…fine. It’s funny at parts, and there’s a great cast of voices, but the show seems a little one-note already, and nothing really happens over the course of the show, which depends on Family Guy-style cutaways for many of its jokes.

Enough commentary. Bojack Horseman returns for a second season, which means it’s already half as successful as The Killing.

Remember how you were just getting nostalgic for a simpler time when Friday nights greeted you with crappy family comedies on ABC? John Stamos heard you, so he’s putting back together Full House with the original creator of the show Jeff Franklin.

Details are sketchy, and nothing is set in stone (we’ve been jerked around before), per the current reports, but TV Guide, which I would expect to be an expert resource on Full House goings-on, is reporting that the show will be coming back with most of the original cast intact, save for Lori Laughlin and the Olsens, who no one really cares about that much anyway, so they can go ahead and stay gone.

Full House interest has peaked a bit this year as the trio of Stamos, Saget, and Coullier appeared in a yogurt commercial during the Super Bowl, and then reunited dressed as their characters on Fallon. Yes, that’s what I’m calling a “peak” in interest. I have to tie this article together with some loose narrative, don’t I?

No plot details are available, but looking back on the entire first run, I’m STILL not sure we’re able to tell you what Full House plot details were then.

Fans of the NFL know that if you want to see any games that aren’t nationally televised (about 75% of them), you’ll need to get the Sunday Ticket, which gives you access to every game played. They also know that if you want to get Sunday Ticket, you’ll have to get DirecTV, which has an exclusive arrangement with the NFL.

NOW, NFL fans are learning that it’s going to stay that way for a long while, as the NFL and DirecTV have reportedly reached an agreement that will extend that exclusivity for eight or so more years. This extension does not bode well for those who thought they would be able to get streaming access to games much as people can with the MLB, NHL, and NBA.

Bummer.

DirecTV was paying about $1 billion per season for the rights, and now it’s looking like $1.3-1.4 billion, so the NFL has reason to make them happy. Does it make the fans happy?

Eh. I suppose if you already have DirecTV and like it, you’re happy. Otherwise, probably not.

Glover didn’t get the gig, but has found success on Community and as rap artist Childish Gambino. He was also on Girls, but the less said about that, the better.

Glover is now getting cast as Spider-Man, albeit only for his voice, on the Disney Channel XD, and not as Peter Parker. Rather, Glover will play Spider-Man as the half-Hispanic, half-Black character Miles Morales, who exists as Spider-Man in an alternate timeline in which Parker dies.

Here’s a clip in which Glover acts really, really, really flabbergasted. Tone it down, Donald:

After years and years and years of criticisms saying the show is circling the drain and that the best years are behind it, The Simpsons seems to be enjoying something of a renaissance. The show’s crossover episodes are generating a fair amount of buzz, and the rerun marathon on FXX is getting insanely good ratings. It’s a good time to be The Simpsons.

So naturally, now is the time that showrunner Al Jean decides to muse about how he would like to end the show. There’s no indication that a finale is on the horizon, but his way of shutting things down sounds pretty appealing.

He thinks that the show would end with the opening Christmas pageant from the very first episode, suggesting that the world of The Simpsons plays out on a loop, rather than linearly, and that everything will start over again. It also goes a long way to making the reruns more appealing, considering they’re actually not taking place in the past of the show. It’s weird, but practical.

Of course, no word yet on an end date. If the show can right the ship a bit, hopefully we’re years and years away.

In what can only be seen as a victory, however small, for originality on network television, NBC has announced that it’s not going forward with its Game of Thrones (?)-inspired Wizard of Oz spinoff Emerald City. Why? It hasn’t been explicitly stated, but the hunch is that no one wanted to see the Wizard of Oz get tossed in among the glut of other TV adaptations of works in the public domain.

The show had been given a straight-to-series order, making the news all the more surprising. Normally the network would order a pilot, then decide based on that. But this time, the network was TOTALLY sure it wanted the show. Until it decided it didn’t at all.

The producers will keep shopping the show around, but if our God is a merciful and just God, this thing will die on the vine and maybe the networks can air an original show with new ideas and characters.

For a long time now, Mythbusters has succeeded as a modest/cult hit due not only to its hairy hosts, but also the shows supporting cast, Grant Imahara, Keri Byron, and Tory Belluci. Over the past decade, they’ve proven to be an integral part of the show, and are as liked and known as the shows “stars.”

So it may come as a disappointment that all three supporting Mythbusters players are on to other things, effective after last night’s season finale.

Adam and Jamie will now be hosting the show themselves which may alienate viewerships that desire a more “normal” cast of characters that don’t wear berets, wire rim glasses, and mixologist mustaches. We will see what becomes of the show next season, but, to say goodbye, the three departed took to Twitter:

It seems like 75,000 lifetimes ago that the Breaking Bad finale aired. But, thanks to the self-congratulatory nature of the entertainment industry, we get to celebrate the show one more (final?) time with its Emmy nominations. The ceremony takes place Monday, and as a thanks to the fans of the show, the always-magnanimous Aaron Paul has decided to lead LA-based Breaking Bad enthusiasts on a scavenger hunt.

Rather than paraphrase, let’s just give you the skinny straight from the man himself:

I am interested in obtaining every single item he just mentioned. I also want :

  • Bogdan’s eyebrows
  • Huell’s windbreaker
  • Walt Jr.’s friend Lewis
  • The giant pile of actual money from the final season
  • Gomez’s laugh, trapped inside a bottle
  • Skyler’s sense of humor
  • Tio’s bell
  • The vanished half of Gus Fring’s face

See you on the battlefield, folks.

It’s pretty easy (and normally correct) to say that you shouldn’t spin long-form entertainment from something as thin and disposable as a Twitter feed. Just ask CBS and the guy behind “@shitmydadsays.” But because we’re greedy, and we crave too much of a good thing, we insist on getting more and more from certain jokes than Twitter has to offer. Granted, the novelty account @dadboner also has a book, entitled Power Moves: Livin’ The American Dream, USA Style, so that’s helpful.

And while the similarities between @shitmydadsays and @dadboner are many, it’s much harder to say no to the novelty account that follows a Michigan man, Karl Welzein, as he loves rock n’ roll, babes, and other awesome things. The Comedy Central adaptation of the account will be animated, which leaves more room for the absurd (though Shit My Dad Says getting William Shatner was pretty absurd).

But what’s not to like about this?:

There is nothing not to like about that.

It’s the 90′s all over again at CBS and CSI: Cyber. Which makes sense, because that probably the last time their core demographics had any pop culture acumen whatsoever. In addition to getting James Van Der Beek to play “Elijah Mundo,” former child rapper Bow Wow will be playing Brody “Baby Face” Nelson, who – get this – is one of the top hackers in the world.

I’m really looking forward to the first season in which the show spends five episodes explaining what the Internet is, then a three season arc explaining what hackers do.

Because there’s no comedy like a character description from a CBS press release, here we go:

Nineteen going on 20, Nelson is a savant with cyber intrusions. Growing up without any parental guidance, he joined “hacktivist” groups for his extended family. His dilemma will be working for the feds while trying to keep his fingertips out of the Deep Web, where he was groomed to be one of the most prolific hackers in the world.

I understand that style guides often suggest you write out any number under 20, then revert to numerals for 20 and up, but that’s a pretty clumsy use of that convention in the first four words there.

Also, THE DEEP WEB! This is hitting pretty close to home, guys. I wonder how many episodes will be about BitCoins. All of them or just almost all of them.

While more cynical fans (like many reading this site, perhaps) see the Super Bowl Halftime Show as a lowest-common-denominator cash grab for the NFL, there’s something to be said for the focus it puts on the acts. Last year, the Super Bowl Halftime Show earned higher ratings than the actual game. Now, that may have been because the game was a blowout, but whatever. Lots of people watch the show and familiarize themselves with pop acts.

So it should comes as little surprise that when the league reached out to Coldplay, Katy Perry, and Rihanna as it’s top three choices, it “suggested” that they thank the NFL by kicking back to it a portion of subsequent tour profits. Is this stupid and bold? Yes. Does it make sense? Yes, but it’s stupid and bold.

The NFL historically covers the costs of an artist’s appearance, but now sees the platform if gives artists as a way to make money. It’s a valuable platform, but I really don’t think those three artists need help getting people to attend their shows. The Wall Street Journal has said the artists weren’t too fired up about sharing their tour proceeds, so let’s just accept the fact that this is finally the year the NFL embraces electronic music, tos Avicii and David Guetta up there, then call it a day.

The television adaptation of The Strain started out meh but has since become pretty awesome. Today there’s confirmation that FX has picked up Guillermo Del Toro’s series for a second season where we’ll really get into the nasty stuff.

While so far, the first season has drawn from the first two books in the trilogy, it is expected that the second season will be based on the second book. The television series has done a great job of cleaning up the sloppy, dangling plot threads of the novels so I’m looking forward to see how they cut the goofy stuff from The Fall. Then again, this a series based on the healing power of love. So we’ll still have to put up with that. (io9)

Few shows enjoy the electricity that Saturday Night Live does, and a big part of that formula is missing now that Don Pardo, the booming, enthusiastic voice behind the show’s introductions, has passed away at the age of 96. Pardo joined the show in its first season, and was with it until last season’s finale, which starred alum Andy Samberg.

His voice, along with the iconic “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!” exclaimed by the cast, ushered in one of the most revolutionary TV shows in history. Along with his voice, the band would play, the audience would cheer, and the show would feel unlike anything else on TV.

As Maya Rudolph said in a tribute video to Pardo at his induction to Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, “The moment you said my name was the height of my career.” She likely wasn’t alone in feeling that.

Pardo is survived by three daughters, two sons, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Initially, Edge of Tomorrow, a story about a solider who keeps dying, then being brought back to life until he completes his mission, had been blessed with the much more awesome name All You Need is Kill. Thinking that was too violent, the studio ran with Edge of Tomorrow. Boo. Whatever.

Well, since the film underperformed at the box office, the studio is taking a mulligan and now referring to the film as Live Die Repeat, which is also a far better title than the one they went with. My guess is that the DVD-buying market for a film like this is much more masculine, and the more alpha title may appeal to them. However, what about all the people who were gonna buy Edge of Tomorrow? How are they supposed to know about this?

I don’t know of any precedent for this type of move; titles are regularly changed for foreign markets, but not from theater to DVD.

First time for everything.

The fourth season has recruited the presence of Jyoti Amge, who’s claim to fame is that she’s the world’s shortest woman at 26 inches tall. And at 20 year’s old, she’s probably done growing. Probably.

Prior to getting cast, Amge had appeared in a documentary called Body Shock as well as an Indian reality show.

In keeping with the name, American Horror Story: Freakshow will take place in the circus town of Jupiter, FL in 1950. You can catch Amge, Jessica Lange, and the other American Horror Storytellers in October on FX.

After seven weeks of getting our hopes up with spikes of action, then letting them simmer with 120 minutes of restless boredom between them, HBO has decided that, year, they’re going to keep doing that to us with The Leftovers. Because it’s been picked up for a second season (in case that roundabout criticism wasn’t clear).

Ratings for the post-rapture study of a small town started off fine, but have been growing across all platforms despite the fact that the show keeps testing viewers’ patience for SOMETHING to happen, just as patiences were tested producer Damon Lindelof‘s previous TV event, Lost.

No word yet on timing, but barring something weird, I think expecting the show back in about 10 months should be about right. In the meantime, just enjoy the silence and cigarette smoke.

Discovery Channel‘s Shark Week seems to be one of those things that gets discussed, praised, and shared far more than it actually gets watched. You know, like the last season of Arrested Development and that fun little shark-related jaunt Sharknado.

Judging by last night’s ratings, people are actually watching Shark Week. More people watched last night’s debut of Shark Week than EVER WATCHED ANY TELEVISION BROADCAST IN THE HISTORY OF THE MEDIUM. Just kidding. The Super Bowl and that M*A*S*H* finale are still pretty save. But it was the highest rating ever in the 27-year history of the annual Discovery Channel event. 27 years? They grow up so quick. If Shark Week was a person, it would already have graduated college, gotten its MBA, then moved back in with its parents because of the shitty job market.

Last night, the premiere pulled in (or “reeled in” if you want to be that way about things) 3.825 million viewers. While it’s possible that this year’s premiere night line-up was realyl strong, and marketed perfectly, I think this can simply be chalked up to the power of social media. Shark Week is one of those dumb things that people get all fired up about on The Twitter and The Facebook, tune in for an aggregate hour or so, then forgot the whole thing exists until next year, when people start hashtagging #hammerheadstrong or something like that.

Still, it managed to give us this, so…congratulations Shark Week, on all your success:

The discussion of representing other ethnicities and the boundaries of good taste will always be a source of much contention between people, but I think that we can all agree that we don’t want to see our white newscasters on MSNBC in sombreros, drinking fake tequila to “celebrate” Cinco de Mayo.

Because it’s insensitive? Maybe. Because it’s really, stupid and unprofessional? Yeah. Definitely that one.

On the Way Too Early show (I smell a Pulitzer based on the name alone), host Thomas Roberts shared the origins of the holiday (understandable) while his PRODUCER, ambled around in a big hat with a flask of what we all assume is tequila. Dude, a margarita is far less offensive.

Anyway, because it takes 90-120 days to apologize for something stupid and indefensible, MSNBC is just now getting their “I’m sorry”s out to an association of Hispanic journalists through an appearance by the network president at their annual convention.

They should also direct it to anyone with good taste who just wants to watch the news in the morning.
