British comedienne Catherine Tate (“Doctor Who“) is the frontrunner to replace Steve Carell’s Michael Scott next season on”The Office,” according to THR. While those close to the show didn’t say exactly what qualities drew them to Tate, there were concerns about her ability to meet the program’s schedule given her theater commitments. Currently starring in a performance of Much Ado About Nothing in London, she will appear on tomorrow’s season finale alongside Ray Romano, Jim Carrey, and Will Ferrell, though her fate beyond that in unknown.
Judging by this news, it would really seem that the powers that be have no idea who will be filling in the top spot, so don’t expect any revelations before next season. Will Arnett is out of the running because his pilot got picked up at NBC, James Spader is being considered, but probably a long shot given the warm qualities the show has adopted recently. James Spader is not “warm.” Ed Helms, Craig Robinson, and Rainn Wilson are also supposedly in contention, but I would count on them being more in the mix for the entertainment value on the show.
So bet on Tate, despite the fact that no one outside of “Doctor Who” message boards knows who she is.
