It may have taken a few decades, but it finally seems like TV has become a great platform for gritty, dramatic, and all-out adult TV shows. Their plots, actors, cinematography and soundtracks are beyond entertaining, in some respects equaling or surpassing Hollywood productions. Put the kids to bed and have a little grown-up time, and munch on some popcorn while you watch these five adult TV shows!
“Californication” is one the most loved shows on television. And, might we add, its name is extremely appropriate for the content of the show. Hank Moody (David Duchovny) is an esteemed writer living in Los Angeles. He’s surrounded by the people he loves; Charlie, his agent, Marcy, Charlie’s wife, Karen, his ex-lover (who he just can’t get over) and Becca, his insightful daughter. They along with Moody’s real life events provide the inspiration for his books. “Californication” is full of humor, sex, love and drama.
definately Showtime’s “Shamless”. Fiona Gallagher (Emmy Rossum) is the oldest sibling of six. Her father is the definition of a “dead-beat dad”, always drunk and stealing money from his kids. Fiona tries to keep food on the table by doing whatever she can and making sure everybody does their part. The Gallaghers show us that despite everything that happens, family is family and you love them no matter what. Warning: You won’t be able to stop watching “Shameless” once you start!
It would be a crime not to include the biggest drug television on air, “Weeds”. Nancy (Marie Louise Parker) is a single mother of two left to fend for herself in suburbia after her husband dies. Without any college education or means of making ends meet, Nancy becomes a small time marijuana dealer. We watch her grow from a small time dealer in her neighborhood to a full on drug queen. But the reason why we absolutely adore this show is not just all the information about pot we get—it’s how sexy Nancy is (in the show a strain of weed is named ‘MILF weed’ because of her), how funny her kids are and the twisting turning plot.
“Mad Men” is possibly one of the best shows on AMC. It shows how men and women used to live in the 60s. Don Draper (Donald Francis) is a Madison Avenue advertising tycoon. He sleeps with countless women, even though he is married with children. This show is beyond interesting. We get to watch each character grow and learn more and more about themselves.
This show is not like the others in our list. It’s a serious thriller about Dexter (Michael C. Hall), a sociopathic serial killer-turned cop who takes out all his violent rage and killing tendencies out on ‘bad’ people. Michael Hall has seriously outdone himself in this role—we can’t see him as anything a serial killer now!
