“Anyone who isn't us is our enemy.” Cersei (Lena Headey) plays the mother bear to the extreme in defense of her children and her family. As long as the Lannister blood flows within them, Cersei is the beast unleashed upon those who would see that bloodline harmed in any manner. A passionate line with a foundation of murderously cold steel lying just under the surface forms a truly badass quote from “Game of Thrones”.
“It's the family name that lives on. That's all that lives on. Not your personal glory, not your honor, but family.” The head of the Lannisters, Tywin gives voice to his philosophy on bloodlines. Through his denigration of individual accomplishments and vanities, Tywin shows his staunch belief in the grand sum of the parts and not the parts themselves. A man who rallies for the family using an iron fist backed with a strategic, cunning mind yet would not be considered a family man presents a fascinating dichotomy in the world of “Game of Thrones”.
“A Lannister always pays his debts.” This recurring statement marks the Lannisters as a family that repays in kind whatever they feel they owe whether it be a slight or a kindness. A utilitarian motto voiced often within “Game of Thrones” by the Lannisters that can be used as a terrifying threat or a promise as good as gold. Tyrion uses this phrase multiple times and yet it never falters, always ringing with power and conviction in each syllable.
“There are no men like me. Only me.” There were other great swordsmen, and will be other great swordsmen but add in the incestuous sister snuggling, the ability to toss ten-year-olds out high windows and the killing of the last King and Jaime Lannister is truly an original. A boastful line that holds more truth than embellishment, it speaks to the true killer that he has become as his life has progressed. Uniqueness can be treasured but in this case uniqueness is a boon that the mold has been broken, at least until Joffrey takes up the sword.
