While Wilfred is overjoyed about the breakup, Ryan is having a crisis of conscience. Drew is genuinely sorry about what happened, and apologizes to Ryan, admitting he has a problem he can’t control. Ryan’s guilt leads him to the conclusion that he should intervene, and ask Jenna to take Drew back. When Wilfred protests, Ryan takes a page from Drew’s book and asserts himself as the alpha male, announcing that he is no longer willing to let the dog manipulate him.
At first, Wilfred seems willing to comply. But we quickly learn that he is not going to give up the alpha male spot so easily. As a response to Ryan’s attempt at dominance, Wilfred poisons him…
…and violence ensues.
It turns out that Wilfred poisoned Ryan with a chemical commonly found in chocolate that is only harmful to dogs. In the end, Wilfred is impressed by Ryan’s willingness to forgive, and the two mend their friendship. Jenna and Drew are also able to patch things up, leaving Ryan with both a clear conscience and a broken heart.
In my opinion, this was the best episode to date. The characters are starting to gel, jokes are finding their rhythm, and even Chris Kline is coming across as funny. Despite the show’s slow start, I’m rather optimistic about the its future.
