The “Grey’s Anatomy” cast is an incredibly brilliant collection of talented actors. Once one of the most popular shows on television, this medical drama debuted in March 2005, and followed newbie interns through their first year, and beyond, at Seattle Grace Hospital. By season three, disputes on the set resulted in popular characters being written off the show. This caused falling ratings fueled by unpopular story lines, unpopular new characters, and unpopular agendas being forced on the viewing public. Only a few characters remain from the original cast that appeared in the pilot episode.
Dr. Meredith Grey, played by Pompeo, is the main character that the show was built around. Ellen Pompeo was born November 10, 1969 in Everett, Massachusetts. Pompeo began her film career in commercials arranged by her agent she met while working as a bartender in New York. She began to receive minor roles in popular television shows like “Friends” and “Law and Order”. Shortly after moving to California, she landed a role in the movie “Moonlight Mile” in 2002. Her other film credits included “Daredevil”, “Catch Me If You Can” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” before landing the lead role in “Grey’s Anatomy”. Pompeo won a Screen Actors Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series in 2007 for her work in “Grey’s Anatomy”.
Neurosurgeon Dr. Derek Sheppard, played by Dempsey, nicknamed "McDreamy", is the love interest/husband of Dr. Meredith Grey. Dempsey, born January 13, 1966 in Lewiston, Maine. Dempsey began his acting career touring with the stage production of “Torch Song Trilogy” and Philadelphia”. At the age of 21, Dempsey played with Beverly D’Angelo in “The Mood”. His best known early role was in “Can’t Buy Me Love” in 1987. Dempsey appeared in several other movies but never found a great success until landing the role of Dr. Sheppard on “Grey’s Anatomy” which propelled him into mega stardom and several new hit movies. Dempsey received a People’s Choice Award for Favorite Male TV Star in 2007 and 2008 along with a Screen Actors Guild Award shared with the cast of “Grey’s Anatomy” in 2007. Since the death of his mother from cancer, Dempsey has become an activist with the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing.
Dr. Christina Yang, played by Oh, is one of the most complex and interesting characters of the show. Oh was born July 20, 1971 in Nepean, Ontario to Korean immigrant parents. Sandra Oh is clearly the most talented and successful actor in the ensemble. Oh’s career began and became successful in Canada, making he unknown to American audiences. American audiences became familiar with Oh when she appeared in Arli$$ from 1996 to 2002, “Dancing at the Blue Iguana” in 2000, “The Princess Diaries” in 2001 and in “Under the Tuscan Sun” in 2003. Sandra Oh has received 12 awards and 14 additional nominations for her acting including a Screen Actors Guild Award shared with the cast of “Grey’s Anatomy” in 2007.
Dr. Miranda Bailey, played by Wilson, is the voice of reason, the motivator, and the best teacher to the interns and staff. Wilson was born August 27, 1969 in Houston, Texas. Educated in the arts, acting was always her focus. Wilson’s incredible singing voice landed her several roles on stage and in musical stage productions. Her first notable television roles were small parts in “Lone Star”, “The Sopranos”, and “Law & Order: SVU”. Wilson was working in a bank across from ground zero in New York when she won the role as Miranda Bailey in “Grey’s Anatomy”. Wilson won Image Awards for her work in “Grey’s Anatomy” in 2008, 2009, and 2010.
