"The Smurfs" characters used to bring great delight to millions of television sets on Saturday mornings. This classic cartoon, based on a comic strip, is among the most memorable classics from the 1980s. Here is an overview of some of the characters.

  1. Brainy Smurf. Brainy Smurf is the nerdy brainiac of the bunch. Brainy Smurf wears glasses and often lectures to the rest of the smurfs without reall knowing what he is talking about. The other smurfs usually become very annoyed with this character. The other smurfs usually end up throwing projectiles at Brainy's head if Hefty Smurf doesn't toss him out of the village.
  2. Hefty Smurf. Hefty Smurf is a big strong smurf who usually keeps Brainy in check by tossing him long distances during an annoying lecture. Hefty hauls items that the other smurfs can't haul. This "Smurfs" character is also characterized by his tattoo which depicts a heart with an arrow piercing it.
  3. Papa Smurf. Papa Smurf is the smurf leader. Everyone listens to Papa Smurf because he is a natural, mild mannered and wise leader. This "Smurfs" character is also a sorcerer who is known for tactics such as creating evil twins of each of the smurfs. However, all his acts of trickery are for wise purposes.
  4. Gargamel. Gargamel is the evil villain character of "The Smurfs". Many episodes feature this sorcerer devising a sinister plot to rid the world of smurfs. Gargamel's goal in life is to destroy the smurfs and turn their remains into gold by means of alchemy. This ongoing plot line provides confirmation to the rumor that "The Smurfs" is a communist brainwashing conspiracy aimed at children. Gargamel's cat, Azrael, aids him in all his missions.
  5. Smurfette. Smurfette is usually the only female character in "The Smurfs" aside from Papa Smurf's mother. Gargamel created her to stir up trouble. However, Papa Smurf used his wizard skills to transform her into a beautiful hearthrob. Being such a sweetheart and the only female, she still managed to stir up trouble unintentionally.
