Battlestar Galactica

POSTED BY admin | MONDAY JUNE 16 AT 12:40 PDT

Battlestar Galactica, or BSG, is a franchise of science fiction films and television series, the first of which was produced in 1978. A series of book adaptations, original novels, comic books and video games have also been based on the concept. A reimagined miniseries aired in 2003, with a regular television series starting in 2004. All of the Battlestar Galactica productions share the same premise: In a distant part of the universe, a civilization of humans live on planets known as the Twelve Colonies. In the past, the Colonies have been at war with a cybernetic race known as the Cylons. With the help (knowing or unknowing) of a human named Baltar, the Cylons launch a sudden sneak attack on the Colonies, laying waste to the planets and devastating their populations. A few thousand of the human survivors flee into space aboard any spacecraft they can reach. Of all the Colonial Fleet, the Battlestar Galactica appears to be the only military ship that survived the attack. Under the leadership of famed military leader Commander Adama, the Battlestar Galactica and its crew take up the task of leading the ragtag fugitive fleet of survivors into space in search of a fabled refuge known as Earth.Airs: Fridays 10/9cStation: Sci-Fi

Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins once sang, "Though we might hate to admit it/There are always two sides to every story."  I bet the two ex-Genesis frontmen had no idea they'd be singing about "Battlestar Galactica."SCI FI Wire posted an exclusive trailer for the BSG spinoff movie called The Plan, which they claim "will likely come out on DVD and will also air this fall—recaps the story of the destruction of the human Colonies from the point of view of the Cylons."Screen Junkies' resident BSG expert, Jim "Bad Mother Frakker" Connelly expressed his concern over what the toll this film will take on the lives of all Battlestar fans.  Said Connelly, "[I'm] worried EJO is right, and that it'll spur rewatching the whole series again!"  I'm guessing Connelly's EJO is Edward James Olmos and not the Electronic Journal of Oncology.  The latter did have a great article on smoking and polymorphism in xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes, though. What say you, fans?  Would rewatching the entire series be that bad? I’ve got a theory, which is mine, and I own it, and my theory is this: no TV show should ever go more than 5 or 6 seasons.   Even the greatest shows begin to lose something after that many seasons, and often start tarnishing what made them great in the first place.  Which is a roundabout way of saying that while Battlestar Galactica has turned out to be my current All-Time Favorite TV Show Ever, I’m still very glad that it’s leaving the airwaves.  I’d rather have 4.5 (or whatever) great seasons than 10 seasons, where the last five were shite.  So while I’m sad that Battlestar Galactica is ending, I’m also happy that they’re leaving while firing on all cylinders.  Of course, “firing on all cylinders,” is just my opinion.  Lotsa folks out there think that this Series Finale was either a misfire, or a case of firing on too many cylinders. I’ve got a theory for that, which is mine, and I own it, and my theory is:  there are three main reasons that people think that a particular Series Finale sucks: More...

It’s right there in the title:  “Part 1.”  Of course this was going to be all setup for next week’s final confrontation, so, knowing that was our expectation, Ron Moore went on a bit of different route.  Here’s the thing: it doesn’t necessarily take an apocalypse caused by Sexy Killer Robots to make life totally suck.  Life can do that all on its own, as we shall see.Edward James Olmos gets to do the previouslies, which are:    •    Starbuck found her own dead body on Earth, which sucks, and after making the mistake, or “mistake,” of confessing her deadness to Gaius Baltar, he outs her.    •    Samuel T. Anders gets a bullet to the brain, and Starbuck, having been given the transcription to “All Along the Watchtow--  Is anybody paying attention?  Is there anybody who is watching this last batch of episodes who is a NEW viewer of Battlestar Galactica?  Because DO NOT start here. Start with the mini-series, for frak’s sake. Sheesh!  More...

The producers of the original Battlestar Galactica had a plan.  In the late 1970s, it wasn’t uncommon for a male lead in a TV series to have a major pop career.  So when they found out early on that the Bee Gees – the biggest recording act in the known universe – were fans of their show, they reached out.  The plan was this:  the Bee Gees would write a thumping disco tune; Dirk Benedict would sing it; coke and hookers and cash to every AM station imaginable and voila! a world-wide smash that would guarantee a second season of Galactica. That song was called “Islanded in a Stream of Stars.”   I’ll be giving you a taste of the words throughout this recap.  For example:Islanded in a stream of starsDeath and betrayal is what we areTrust and love have gone so farIslanded in a stream of stars More...

Now this?  Is more like it.  Aaron Douglas,  Katee Sackhoff and Grace Park were all given chances to shine, and it goes without saying that they all were great. Given the reveal at the end, some people might wonder if anybody might have said something to Kara at some point, but it’s not like she doesn’t have a history of acting out in public. More...

It's a bad sign when the more you think about an episode, the less you like it.  Initially I was won over by the acting, especially Michael Hogan, but when I started to break it down, it turned out that the episode really didn't hang together.   So I'm not sure if this recap does either.  More...

All of this has been confusing before, and all of this will be confusing again.Instead of the previouslies, we begin with yet another new prologue, and as is apropos for this show, it’s all cycling back to the beginning.  The question is, as you’ll see, “what, exactly is the beginning?”  Weirdly enough, I actually think that we find out. It's the familiar white lettering on the black background:THIS HAS ALL HAPPENED BEFOREAND IT WILL HAPPEN AGAINA shot of Earth.  Sucking.THE CYLONS WERE CREATED BY MAN  Scary-ass Centurions.THEY REBELLED  War!THEN THEY VANISHEDFORTY YEARS LATER, THEY CAME BACKTHEY EVOLVED  Caprica Six walking on the planet Caprica, which is then nuked.50,298 HUMAN SURVIVORS The FleetHUNTED BY THE CYLONSBeing hunted by the CylonsELEVEN MODELS ARE KNOWNShown in order we discovered themONE WAS SACRIFICED More...

Richard Hatch was pissed.  He always loved playing Captain Apollo on the original Battlestar Galactica, and very much wanted to the sequel that he envisioned back onto TV screens. But instead, Ron Moore's "reimagined" Battlestar came out instead, and Hatch was critical of the entire enterprise.  He came around, eventually, and was offered the role of Tom Zarek, Freedom Fighter.  But I don't think that he's ever fully let his anger go, and, in fact, that anger has informed how he played Tom Zarek, who -- except for a short bit on New Caprica -- was never not kind of an asshole. "This time, it's personal." That's been a running joke ever since I can remember, and probably predates the infamous Jaws III poster, but sometimes, the biggest events happen just because somebody got their feelings hurt.  Former Speaker of the House Tip O'Neil once famously said, "all politics is local," but I don't think he got specific enough, because, really, all politics is personal.  And sometimes people in power don't care if they turn the entire world upside down in order to get atonement, or revenge, or maybe just an apology.Sometimes, lots and lots of people die as a result.Previously, on Battlestar Galactica,  Saul Tigh tells us, the last episode. Also: the entire run of the series. More...

If last week's episode was all about giving up, then this is about starting over.  Which makes sense, as this episode was really all about setting up the endgame of the entire series. Also: more unfit fathers than an entire Joss Whedon series! More...
