Warning! Spoiler Alert!

There’s a lot a competition for best zombie movie. Some might say the best was the racially tinged horror classic, Night of the Living Dead. They wouldn’t be far off the mark. If you’re a sixteen-year-old girl you might say it’s Warm Bodies. If you’re a bro obsessed with Bill Murray, you might go with Zombieland as your fave. Mine, and frankly the best, is Shaun of the Dead. I love Simon Pegg. In his down time from acting in blockbuster behemoths he’s always crafting together a brilliant gem close to his, and our, nerdy heart. These gems are invariable entertaining: Hot Fuzz, The World’s End, Paul—all great, but none are as brilliant as Shaun of the Dead.

A hapless dote with a shite job and a lovable slob for a best friend realize they have to save their loved ones when the zombies attack. Such a simple premise. It’s those simple premises in the hands of brilliant writers that always turn out for the best. For instance, a newly wedded couple moves into the Dakota and gives birth to the Antichrist? Done and done, Rosemary’s Baby was a hit novel, a classic horror film, and even an upcoming miniseries staring Zoe Saldana. Simple premises lead to esteemed legacies. And Simon Pegg is on his way.

Zombie movies rise several times a year, always reminding us that the dead are never really gone and  that what our true natures are brutal and savage. It’s the vanquishing of the zombies, the chopping off of their heads or the burning of their rotting bodies, that reassures us that we may might just hold off the end times (that horrid moment when we devour each other) just a little longer. The human race demands an endgame, and zombie narratives (along with comets, disease epidemics, and natural disasters) are our favorite art form in which to experiment with the our own demise. And it’s the most personal. We can’t fight comets. We can try to fight aliens. We can’t see diseases, but just ask Brad Pitt what happens when the disease turns people into zombies. We can seek shelter when the tsunamis, earthquakes, and storms come, but look how well that went for the dinosaurs. A zombie apocalypse is personal because it’s us. How do we fight ourselves when we’ve suddenly become a danger to each other? I mean, besides with a cricket bat.

Taking this theme and concept to a British suburb, Shaun of the Dead is characteristic of many zombie narratives in that it uses the undead invasion as a prism in which to see Shaun’s closest, interpersonal relationships: the girlfriend he is doomed to disappoint, the loser friend he should have ditched years ago, and the mom and stepdad for whom he’ll never be good enough. While essentially a loser in the beginning of the film, he becomes the leader of his kith and kin’s survival party, showing us through humor and heart that it might just take the most dire of circumstances to reveal one’s heroic nature. This heroic nature is tester (spoiler alert) in the movie’s greatest moment in which his mother becomes a zombie and he must kill her. It’s a heart-wrenching moment tucked exquisitely among the action and humor.

And speaking of humor, we can’t forget that Shaun of the Dead is simply funny as hell. A feast for the observant nerd, the film is typical of other Simon Pegg vehicles in that subtle jokes are paid off hours later, delightfully telling details are thrown in for those watching close enough, and references to B-plots and other narratives are scattered among the bloody river of English Wit. It’s generally difficult to translate British humor into American lexicon, so I get it if some don’t find this movie as entertaining as I do. It might help to know that instead of saying a phone line is “busy” the Brits say “engaged.” It may help to also know that a common nickname for men called David is “Davs”, pronounced like “calves.” That said, most of the jokes work just fine, and what starts as a series of awkward situations slowly turns into hilarious, action-packed romp.

Actors to watch out for. Shaun’s mom? Yup, that’s Penelope Wilton, more commonly known as Mrs. Crawly, Mathew’s mother on Downton Abbey. When Shaun’s crew meets their counterparts in the alleyway? Yup, that’s Martin Freeman, before he became Dr. Watson and Bilbo Baggins, as Shaun’s doppelgänger. And be sure not to miss a sutble Bill Nighy as Shaun’s stepfather.

Modern day zombie films and television owe it all to the house George A. Romero built, so what a thrill it must be to know the zombie godfather has seen your work. Except when he’s not impressed.

“They asked me to do a couple of episodes of The Walking Dead, but I didn’t want to be a part of it. Basically, it’s just a soap opera with a zombie occasionally. I always used the zombie as a character for satire or a political criticism, and I find that missing in what’s happening now,” the director told The Big Issue. He also had some criticism of World War Z’s  fast-moving zombies. “I guess Zack Snyder started that with the remake of Dawn of the Dead— fast-moving zombies— but the zombies in World War Z, my God, they’re like army ants!”

His comments may seem fairly measured and not designed to be derogatory but this is the Internet and the Internet wants blood. In that spirit:

The same part of me that cinched up with delight when Steven Seagal made the Steven Seagal vx. Vampires film Against the Dark is getting a work out again today. That’s because Variety reports Arnold Schwarzenegger will battle the living dead. He will star in and produce Maggie, a Black List script from writer John Scott 3(: The Scottening) with directing duties going to commercial director Henry Hobson.

In a world stricken by a zombie virus, Schwarzenegger will play a dad helping his daughter come to terms with her infection. So basically, a film version of the Massengil commercial we always wanted to see.

People take their Walking Dead really seriously. From people who freak out over spoilers to guys who turn down oral sex, the show is a sensitive topic to fans. But does it warrant shooting your girlfriend?

There’s a Long Island man who would say, “yes.” Jared Gurman has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting his girlfriend in the back with a .22 caliber rifle during an argument about whether or not a zombie apocalypse could happen.

“He felt very adamant there could be a military mishap that would result in some sort of virus being released that could cause terrible things to happen,” Detective Lt. Raymond Cote said a news conference. “She felt it was ridiculous. He’s passionate about it. And it escalated from there.”
Gelderman chose not to spend the night at his home following the argument, but the heated exchange continued by text message, NBC 4 New York reported. When she returned to Gurman’s home to check on him around 2:30 a.m., he was outside his door waiting with a .22-caliber rifle.
“She tried to diffuse the situation, to calm him down,” said Cote. “She was walking up the stairs when Mr. Gurman raised the rifle, pointed it as her and fired one round into her back, causing serious injury.”
Gelderman suffered a shattered rib, a pierced lung, a pierced diaphram and is in serious, but stable condition, Cote said, according to CBS 2 News.

This raises a lot of questions. For instance, is that a Christina Aguilera t-shirt he’s wearing in his mugshot? (NY Daily News)

AMC is making a mockery out of the election. But not nearly as much as Sarah Palin did.

The network has been in a standoff with cable provider, Dish Network, since they were blacked out in early July. Now, in order to grab headlines and help lazy bloggers like myself reach their quota, they are sending undead Presidential hopeful Mr. A. Zombie, his wife Patty Morgan-Zombie, and running mate Noah Pulse to the upcoming Republican and Democratic conventions, to speak out against Dish.

The hope is to end the blackout by the time The Walking Dead returns with season three in October, so AMC won’t suffer further ratings drops. I could spout off averages and percentages but numbers are boring. Let’s get back to the zombie politician thing. I feel he should be invited to the debates. He’d easily win over the Right by moaning and vomiting when asked his thoughts on ObamaCare. (via Warming Glow)

Movie fans are hoping the cemetery chapel featured in Night of the Living Dead can get a new lease on life.

The cemetery association was planning to tear down the boarded up building, but Gary Streiner has stepped in to attempt to save it. Streiner, who was an audio technician on George Romero’s zombie classic, is trying to raise $50,000 to repair the building and convert it into a movie museum or a space that can be rented out for private events like zombie-themed weddings. So far he has raised about $7,000. The cemetery association president has told the press that the building will be destroyed if the funds are not raised.

However, thanks to a loophole in Pennsylvania State Law, Streiner is legally allowed to challenge the association to a series of Greek Games in a last bid attempt to save the property. If he can emerge victorious in the athletic portion, charity sales and costume events, and finally, the talent show, the chapel will be saved and he’ll take control of the Greek Council.

How do you kill something that’s already dead? The most violent way possible is the preferred method on The Walking Dead. With the show set to return for a second season this Sunday at 9pm EST on AMC, we’re anticipating more badass violence and zombie kills. And frankly, we can’t wait.

On a show that doesn’t pull any punches in the gore department, the kills and special effects can only get more impressive. Let’s salute the goriest moments from the first season as we look forward to being grossed out by season two.

Little Girl Headshot

The series began with the protagonist, Rick, being forced to put a bullet into the brain of an undead child. I think the series really made its intentions clear in those opening moments.

Zombie Shot Through Fence

This unfortunate soul was put out of its misery with a Colt pressed against its forehead. The resultant spray of blood, bone, and brain was pretty severe, especially since this was a mercy kill.

Baseball Bat to the Dome

The severe squishification of heads via baseball bat has always been reserved for mafia dramas and that one really weird episode of Leave It to Beaver. Those days are over thanks to the advent of zombies of television, and a new day has dawned!

The trailer for the hit video game Dead Island caused quite a stir, and probably convinced at least one person to cancel his or her tropical vacation to avoid a possible zombie outbreak. The game has gotten pretty good reviews, too – which is why it should come as no surprise that Lionsgate is making a movie version. After all, video games are big, zombies are big, and people love the beach. Why not? Here’s a plot synopsis – and remember, always go for the head:

“The game centers on vacationers whose island paradise becomes a living hell when a zombie outbreak quickly spreads.  Cut off from the rest of the world, the survivors have only the available materials and the island’s natural ‘weapons’ to protect themselves from the vicious and growing legions of the undead. “

So it’s like Super Mario Sunshine, but with zombies. The movie will undoubtedly follow a similar line, and the filmmakers at Lionsgate promise to preserve that special Dead Island touch with a “focus on human emotion, family ties and non-linear storytelling.”  Also, lots and lots of undead gore.
