World War Z was something of a sleeper hit, which is funny given its massive marketing budget and costs overall. However, with Marc Forster at the helm, the film had suffered countless delays and overruns that led many to believe it would be the biggest flop of 2013.

It wasn’t. It did really well.

However, given the production scares, along with animosity between Forster and star Brad Pitt (which resulted in them passing each other notes because they refused to speak to one another) the producers, whom Pitt himself was one, opted to go in a different direction for the sequel.

So they got Juan Antonio Bayona to do it. Bayona has depth of experience in catastrophe films with last year’s The Impossible, and with scary death stuff after directing The Orphanage.

And Brad Pitt will probably speak to him, which is a plus.

Modern day zombie films and television owe it all to the house George A. Romero built, so what a thrill it must be to know the zombie godfather has seen your work. Except when he’s not impressed.

“They asked me to do a couple of episodes of The Walking Dead, but I didn’t want to be a part of it. Basically, it’s just a soap opera with a zombie occasionally. I always used the zombie as a character for satire or a political criticism, and I find that missing in what’s happening now,” the director told The Big Issue. He also had some criticism of World War Z’s  fast-moving zombies. “I guess Zack Snyder started that with the remake of Dawn of the Dead— fast-moving zombies— but the zombies in World War Z, my God, they’re like army ants!”

His comments may seem fairly measured and not designed to be derogatory but this is the Internet and the Internet wants blood. In that spirit:

Though it looked like something of an undead film, rendered lifeless by bad reviews and production issues, World War Z has managed to drag its feet and grunt to a $119 million box office take, all but ensuring that a sequel would be made.

Then the studio made it official by actually ensuring it yesterday.

As everyone with an Internet connection seems to be aware, the film differs completely from its source material, Max Brooks‘ novel of the same name. But that divergence serves as a blessing, as it leaves lots of Brooks’ vignettes to serve as inspiration for the video-game like structure of the film.

Of course, the rumors of a $400 million budget (REALLY?) suggest that maybe this isn’t a good idea, aside from the fact that the movie was fairly middle-of-the-road, albeit innocuously.

So, I no one gets sick of zombies any time soon!

The post ‘World War Z’ Is A Different Type Of Zombie Film, But Is That Enough To Care About It? appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
Since the World War Z film adaptation had been announced a couple years back, fans of the Max Brooks‘ zombie-pocalypse film felt that the project would have some impossibly large shoes to fill. After seeing the film last night, it’s easy to see that the producers agreed, taking those large shoes, throwing them down an incerator, then opting for some nice comfy Crocs instead.

With socks.

World War Z serves as unabashed comfort to the filmgoer. In every instance when The Walking Dead chose to examine the group dynamic and psychological toll of the struggle instead of some grade-A zombie-killing action, World War Z opts for the action, leaving such existential hand-wringing to works that have more than 110 minutes to state their case.

In fact, the action doesn’t stop long enough for the audience to develop many feelings about anything in the film. Backstories are meted out as convenient plot devices – it’s never really clear why Brad Pitt is so important, or why a journalist would be so high on the UN’s hit list of people to save during the zombie-ocalypse. He loves his wife and kids, because that’s what movie heroes do, and he’s brave, but not so brave that he’s not a reluctant hero.

But when stripped of those pretexts for having Brad Pitt do the things he does, World War Z plays out like a video game that consists of about six levels, and it proves borderline impossible not to draw a connection to Nintendo 64′s Goldeneye when Pitt and Co. are tooling around a laboratory, with a clear assignment and strolling villains abound. These levels have distinct goals, and when those goals are completed, the team hops on a plane to the next global locale to solve the mystery of “how do we stop all these fucking zombies?”

The approach is surprisingly effective, shunning all that end of days fatalism for zombies that can run really fast and climb up on each other to scale walls. The tremendous design and thought put into the five or six “levels” throughout the film seems to be the only touchpoint that the film maintains from the book. The settings are scary, well-designed, and exist on an impressive scale.

However, where this approach causes the film to regress is in its PG-13 rating, which relegates us to a zombie-geddon environment in which there is virtually no blood or gore, which lowers the stakes of the film and has the ultimate effect of making the film even seem more like a video game, albeit one from 1993 where the backstory is thin, and zombies have to die because zombies have to die, dig?

After reading Max Brooks’ masterful novel that manages to paint a globe in crisis using an efficiency and narrative, it’s hard to not want to put training wheels on this film, telling it should just go out there and do its best. So the problem faced with reviewing this film is not being TOO forgiving when the film sprints away from anything resembling gravity to offer up more PG-13 monster violence.

Nothing much in World War Z matters except for the successive tasks at hand, and while they’re watered-down trials of what we’ve seen in more sweeping serial works, they remain compelling and different enough from the well-worn genre to keep us engaged, if not caring.

I would have put “deal” in quotes in the title if it didn’t clutter up the headline so much. The “deal” is, for $50, you get an opening night 3D ticket, a small (!) popcorn, a voucher for an HD digital copy of the film, full size poster, and you get to keep your 3D glasses.

So basically, you get a lot of crap for an extra $35. I guess if you’re a fan of the book, and you completely ignore the fact that the film is nothing at all like the book, then it would kind of make sense.

Anyway, if you’re in Houston, Irvine, San Diego, Atlanta, or Philly you’ll have this option. To all others: I’m sorry, but you’ll only have the option of paying $35 less to see this film.

Diehard fans of World War Z (the book) got all up in arms when they found that the “oral history” aspect of the book was being forsaken because it would have cost a metric shitload of money to produce twenty-odd vignettes around the world. It understandable that a movie studio would diminish the breadth of scope of the novel and focus it a little more for the purposes of narrative and cost.

However, this trailer shows that the film became more or less the story of Brad Pitt’s character and his family, and looks sort of like Outbreak meets Independence Day.

It’s a departure, and seems to nullify what made the book so special, but the film still looks good, though in a much more conventional way.

If you have no idea what I’m talking about, read the book. It’s terrific, and is an amazing narrative and story, regardless of whether or not you give a damn about zombies.

Although it hasn’t been easy to bring World War Z to the big screen, star Brad Pitt and director Marc Forster are already talking sequel. Two actually. Which would make the series a trilogy. Pitt recently told the LA Times:

“[Director Marc] Forster and Paramount Pictures each view World War Z as a trilogy that would have the grounded, gun-metal realism of, say, Damon’s Jason Bourne series tethered to the unsettling end-times vibe of AMC‘s The Walking Dead.

So, like zombie parkour? I guess I’m into it.

Of course, this all depends on how the film does at the box office when it’s released at the end of this year. Many feel that the zombie trend is wearing out, but if so it’s dying a really slow death with upticks and booms in popularity. The success of The Walking Dead despite its redundancy and slow plotting is proof that the zombie soup hasn’t been completely pissed in yet. We’ll wait for The Asylum to release World War Zombies before making that call.

2012 already has a slate of films that have fans from many different genres salivating. For no other reason than everyone else seems to be looking back on the past year’s films every December, let’s look forward and get even more excited about the best that 2012 has to offer us.

Your list may vary.

Haywire- January 20

Steven Soderbergh has never really blown my hair back the way other directors do, but he’s consistently “solid.” And while it’s a testament to the genre that I am looking for an action film that clears that admittedly low bar, I am. Gina Carano brings the muscle while Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, and Michael Douglas bring the acting in this story about a CIA agent gone rogue.

The Hunger Games – March 23

After a lengthy stretch of “tribute” casting announcements, The Hunger Games was able to capture my attention. I just recently read the book, and though it didn’t fall in my sweet spot because I’m not a 13 year-old girl, I am eager to see what kind of world the producers create for the dystopian future. The book is sparse with many details, so there’s a ton of room for the designers and director to flex their creative muscle. Plus, Jennifer Lawrence has put a spell on me since Winter’s Bone.

The Dictator – May 11

For me, this one starts and ends with the stars. Perhaps the script is great, perhaps it isn’t, but Sacha Baron Cohen and Anna Faris can find a way to transcend bad writing and play comedy like almost no one else can. The logline is “The heroic story of a dictator who risked his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed.” Interesting. Until you see an image of Sacha Baron Cohen’s dictator. Then it very quickly becomes mesmerizing.

Brad Pitt’s war on zombies has suffered a setback. Police raided a Budapest warehouse and confiscated 85 weapons being used for the currently-filming World War Z. The production claims that the military-style assault rifles came with paperwork claiming they are non-functional, however the Hungarian SWAT team was all like, “No you didn’tttt!!!!”

“This morning a private plane brought guns wrapped in a parcel from a company to an individual [in Budapest],” said Hungary’s Anti-Terrorism officials. “Guns like these are highly illegal to transport even if they were to used as stage guns, which hopefully they weren’t.”

Officials need to handle this threat more seriously. If those weapons fall into the wrong hands then the undead will easily overtake Budapest and then all of Hungary. The key to defeating the zombie menace lies in preparation. If we all band together as a global army and put our differences aside, we can send those geeks back to their graves. (Us)

The above video from the Glasgow set shows a stampede of people running as fast as they can away from the zombie threat, but not fast enough. With everyday that passes, this movie looks less and less like the book. At this point, don’t be surprised if the war element gets downplayed to a tickle-fight. (via FilmDrunk)

You know what city really looks like Philadelphia? Glasgow. Well, it does now that the producers of World War Z took out all the Scottish stuff and droped in a bunch of American stuff. The zombie flick has started filming on location in the Scottish city, with Brad Pitt‘s arrival creating quite a stir.

The Scottish location is the third stop on the World War Z roadshow. Living up to its title, segments have already been shot in Malta and Cornwall. Shooting will go until the end of the month, completing principal photography. After that, Marc Foster and company will have a cushy fifteen months or to really tighten up the footage. In fifteen months, they could probably go ahead and make two more movies if they really wanted to.

Fans of the book will be disappointed, while those who haven’t read the book won’t weigh in, so the big reveal of the World War Z plot will probably come as a disappointment to everyone who has an opinion right now. Rather than breathe life and imagery into the dozens of oral retellings that the book consists of, which would admittedly be cost-prohibitive, the film will follow a much more traditional narrative, following Brad Pitt‘s Gerry Lane, a UN employee, as he races to stop the zombie outbreak.

That plotline doesn’t sound bad, but it seems to squander so much of what made the book unique. Of course, what makes the book unique is exactly what makes the book difficult to stick to in a film adaptation. I suppose a straightforward zombie story with World War Z’s thoughtful mythology is better than one without it, but it’s a little disappointing nonetheless that the studio and director Marc Foster are compromising, though it’s not surprising.

World War Z hits theaters December 21, 2012.

It looks a little arid and desert-y, but not any more than, say, a war against Al Qaeda. World War Z is an oral history based on dozens of accounts of the fictitious zombie war, so this is likely to be just one of several distinct sets, though it’s not known what the other ones will be. The rumor is, however, that the Battle of Yonkers will be the crux of the story. And this don’t look like Yonkers.

After some concern that the production wouldn’t go forward due to funding issues, it looks like we’ve got some definitive proof that it’s being made. I see cameras and everything.

Or course, we’ve got Brad Pitt donning his most handsome Spy Game-esque expat fashions, but beyond that, there are no readily recognizable faces or characters. Or zombies for that matter. Huh.

Fox has a scheduling conflict with his prior commitment to try to kill Madea in I, Alex Cross. Harris didn’t provide a reason for exit from the film but let’s just assume it also involves trying to kill Madea. Someone needs to step up and do it. (Vulture)

Matthew Fox and Ed Harris have joined the ranks of those who have sworn to protect us from the threat of undead scum. Both actors have signed on to Marc Forster‘s World War Z. Also joining them is French actress Julia Levy-Boeken.

Harris’s role is unspecified and Fox is credited for the role of “Parajumper.” I’m not sure how closely the film will stick to Max Brooks‘ source material (it seems to have weaved away somewhat already) but there is a vignette in the book that follows a female pilot crash-landed in a zombie infested jungle. Could this role now belong to Fox? Dude is the go-to actor for getting stranded in jungles. (via Deadline and Bloody Disgusting)

After a few false starts and budget scares, World War Z is happening. World War Z is real. To prove it, the producers decided to step out with another casting announcement since it was revealed that Brad Pitt, in addition to producing the film under his Plan B banner, will be starring in the film as well. James Badge Dale will play a soldier that tries to warn the powers that be that there might be some zombies floating around, and they might want to deal with them sooner rather than later. Pitt will play a sexy researcher for the United Nations. I added the “sexy” part.

World War Z is based on the Max Brooks book that serves as an oral history memorialized ten years after a fictional zombie war. Also, it’s really, really awesome.

You might know James Badge Dale from”The Pacific,” and you might not know him from AMC‘s short-lived “Rubicon.” And there’s a decent chance your 7th grade English teacher made you get familiar with him as Simon in Lord of the Flies. (Variety)

If you like these ladies, you need to cast them in major upcoming motion pictures. No flowers or stuffed bears accepted. Luckily for these actresses, some casting directors did just that.

Mireille Enos (AMC’s “The Killing“) has snagged a role in Paramount‘s World War Z, based on the Max Brooks bestseller about zombies. This is the first movie Hollywood has made about zombies in a long time. She’ll play wife Karin Lane to star Brad Pitt. Though Enos has starred in TV shows like “Big Love,” this is the first time her face will be stretched to movie theater proportions in a major role. (Deadline)

Meanwhile, the Judd Apatow produced comedy Five Year Engagement is importing a new lady from NBC Thursdays to join the cast. Mindy Kaling “The Office“) will join Alison Brie (“Community”), as well as Jason Segal, Emily Blunt, Rhys Ifans and Chris PrattParks and Recreation“). With all that NBC talent on board, they’d better hope a film opening opposite them doesn’t feature stars from CBS, or they will be crushed at the box office. (Variety)

I was more than happy when my plea to have World War Z funded was answered. But now I’m totally stoked.

One minute, it’s dead. Then, it’s back from the dead. Then, it’s movin faster than expected. Just like the Zombieland zombies. Cinematographer Robert Richardson is now prepping for World War Z to begin production overseas. Which means, that principal photography could begin as early as the end of the month.

Although it seems unlikely that the movie can be up and running so quickly, keep in mind that the project has been in development hell for so long that a lot of the prep is probably already done. As ScreenRant proposes, it would make sense for Paramount to want to get this one out as quickly as possible given the cost and the multitude of zombie movies that will soon oversaturat the box office. They definitely want to get this one in theaters before the Scary Movie guys ruin the genre.

Hollywood giveth, Hollywood taketh away, then Hollywood giveth one more time, and that’s where we hope the madness stops. It appears that the much-anticipated World War Z film is back after circling the drain due to financing concerns.

Today, it was announced by Deadline that WWZ might have all the financing it needs, as well as a June start date. Nothing’s set in stone, but it appears the project is back on track after a scare last week.

Who do we have to thank for this salvation? David Ellison a Paramount exec and brother of rock-star-movie-saver Megan Ellison, who has recently helped get made: True Grit, Cogan’s Trade, The Wettest County in the West, and an untitled Spike Jonze/Charlie Kaufman collaboration. Yeah, you could say we’re fans of the Ellisons.

For those not hip to World War Z, it is based on a book of the same name that served as an oral history of a fictional zombie war that the entire globe was a part of. It has a loyal following (because it’s really great) and Brad Pitt will be producing and starring in the film. It rides a wave of zombie-centric entertainment unleashed on the masses, but many feel that it stands on its own enough to differentiate itself from the myriad other projects out there.

Max Brooks’ World War Z: An Oral History Of The Zombie War is easily in the upper echelons of zombie fiction. Then why is Paramount having a hard time finding somebody to pick up the tab?

Casino Royale‘s Marc Forster is attached to direct and Brad Pitt is attached to produce and star in what could be the best movie about zombies of all time. The problem here is the price tag on the expansive globally-set story. Coming in at $125 million has the studio ready to drop the project and focus on easier to produce fare like more Justin Bieber biopics. The same thing happened with Guillermo Del Toro‘s At The Mountains Of Madness. Despite killer material, an awesome director, and one of the biggest stars in the world, they still couldn’t get financing.

It’s a bit of a different case here, however. Mountains was to be R-rated while Paramount has the guarantee from Forster that World War Z will be PG-13. Lame, but whatever. At least it will exist and”The Walking Dead” gets away with some pretty gnarly effects despite television censor restrictions. Paramount is reaching out to their normal financing partners but I’d think Brad Pitt wouldn’t have to look too far for the money himself. Just recruit the cast of Ocean’s Eleven for the dead-raising funds. Or ask Maddox. You KNOW that kid’s got the scratch. (Vulture)

After five years in limbo, Pitt's production company is finally moving forward with the project. Using Michael Straczynski's adapted screenplay, World War Z will chronicle life in a post-apocalyptic zombie-infested universe. Pitt himself will star in the film, which Paramount has slated for release in 2012. Having read the book a few years back, I'm excited to see it headed to the big screen. I'm not excited enough to risk leaving my heavily fortified zombie-proof apartment/command center, but I'm excited none the less. That reminds me, does anyone know how to fix a chemical toilet? Mother is complaining about the smell. (Cinema Blend)
