A movie that will be a surefire hit among people who like depressing stuff.

Actors often say that they don’t want to get pigeonholed, so they change up the type of projects they take so as not to get into a rut. And so it appears to be with recently Oscar-nominated John Hawkes (“Eastbound and Down“), who must not want to be to heavily associated with bright and happy comedies like Winter’s Bone – because his next movie is Surrogate, about a poet who spent his entire life from age 6 in an iron lung due to polio.

That’s not even the most depressing part, though. You might be wondering why the movie is called Surrogate. Here’s the horrifying truth: The poet (named Mark O’Brien), had a point in his life during which he hired a “sex surrogate to help him explore his sexuality.” Ugggghhhhh! I mean, more power to Mark O’Brien but UGGGHHHH, right? Anyway, it’s not known whether Hawkes will be playing O’Brien or the titular surrogate, but either way, this is going to be a depressing-ass movie. I hope he goes back to doing light, funny movies like Winter’s Bone soon. (via The Playlist)

More awards, more gift baskets, more crying losers.

The Independent Spirit Awards are designed to shed light on the lesser, more independent films that are released each year – so of course it makes sense that they also serve as a predictor of the most mainstream awards ceremony in all of Hollywood. Or does it? It could be that since the requirements to be considered an “independent film” are somewhat stringent (see the decreased number of nominated films compared to the Oscars as an example), this isn’t any better a predictor than tea leaves or fortune cookies. Anyway, here’s a list of the major winners:

Best Feature: Black Swan

Best Female Lead: Natalie Portman, Black Swan

Best Male Lead: James Franco, 127 Hours

Best Supporting Female: Dale Dickey, Winter’s Bone

Best Supporting Male: John Hawkes, Winter’s Bone

Best Director: Darren Aronofsky, Black Swan

Interesting stuff — we’ll see if these three movies can do anywhere near as well at the Oscars, given that they have so much more competition. You can get a complete list of all the winners over at IMDb.

Savages seems to be putting some amazing pieces together to make the literary adaptation, well, amazing.

The adaptation of Savages seems to be recruiting a level of talent commensurate with its A-list source material. Deadline reports that Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone) is in talks to star in the film about two pot-dealing buddies that share a girlfriend in southern California. Oliver Stone is attached to direct the adaptation of the best-selling book written by Dan Winslow. Lawrence has been an extremely hot commodity since her turn as a burdened teen on a quest to save her family’s house in Winter’s Bone.

The project is being developed privately and repped by CAA, so expect a lot of action as soon as the producers lower the flag on this one. Fanning the flames of this project are rumors of involvement from Leonardo DiCaprio, James Franco (duh), and Benicio del Toro. While the pieces are a long way from being in place here, all signs point to an amazing project in the works. But don’t take my word for it. A synopsis from Deadline:

Somehow, sharing a bed with O created no discord in the relationship between brainy botanist Ben and Chon, a hardcore ex-Navy SEAL who returned from Afghanistan with top-quality pot and a total lack of remorse for killing to protect his pals. They live a quiet lucrative existence in Laguna Beach, growing and distributing their primo pot. Stone has been meeting with top actors to play Ben and Chon, a list that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Aaron Johnson, Tom Hardy, James Franco and Tron Legacy‘s Garrett Hedlund. He’s also courting Benicio Del Toro for the role of an Mexican drug cartel enforcer sent to muscle Ben and Chon out of business. When they resist, O gets kidnapped and the ransom is every ill-gotten cent they’ve made. They hatch a complex plan to get her back and then disappear.

Uh, yeah. I’ll pay whatever you want me to to see that.

The director of Winter's Bone, the fun romp about an Ozark girl out to find the corpse of her father is working up a treatment based on the adventures of lovable imp Pippi Longstocking.

In a bit of news that will make every parent cling to their child with tears in their eye, the director of Winter’s Bone, the fun romp about an Ozark girl out to find the corpse of her father, has told the LA Times that she’s working up a treatment based on the adventures of lovable imp Pippi Longstocking. In fact, Debra Granik, the director in question, mentioned it as an aside during the interview, as though she didn’t think it was insanely weird and newsworthy that she was working on a project so diametrically different than Winter’s Bone.

One can’t infer too much from the single comment made about this treatment, but recent history has demonstrated that studios have been enamored with such weird pairings, so while it’s early, it’s not outside the realm of possibility that this could get done. While the script gets put together, the mental image of Pipp fighting tears while cutting the hands off a corpse should be a good reminder that this project is in the works. Yikes.
