The Wolfman was regarded as a huge bomb for Universal. So news of a sequel was perplexing. But now it all makes sense. They’re trying to make the first look good by comparison.

The man who brought us Carnosaur 2, Louis Morneau, has been hired to direct the sequel. The sequel is now titled Werewolf and isn’t so much a sequel at all at this point. It looks like the plan is to create a cheap direct-to-DVD film in the hopes that they take off and lead to a string of more Werewolf films that people can accidentally rent while drunk. I say we all oblige and watch the Hell out of these movies. It’s the only way we’ll ever see a Werewolf vs. Carnosaur film. (Moviehole)

Those of you who fear that reboots have violently ravaged theaters like a pack of – oh, I don’t know, let’s just say “wolves” – may want to run and hide from the following news.

So, in 2010, Joe Johnston directed that toothless remake of The Wolf Man called The Wolfman starring Benicio Del Toro. Critics formed an angry mob, chasing it out of town, and an underwhelming box office performance was the silver bullet in the film’s chest. Or so we thought.

You see, the property is really important to Universal, who wants to launch a series of films based around their classic monsters, so they’re going to reboot the franchise and go in a different direction. They’re even considering calling the film Werewolf. So Werewolf would be a reboot of The Wolfman, which was a remake of The Wolf Man. And who says Hollywood is out of ideas?

Screenwriter Michael Tabb’s Wolfman 2 script is apparently being re-written as a standalone feature, which will lean closer creatively to the 1941 Lon Chaney version rather than the most recent take. (Moviehole)
