If there’s one thing that movies have taught me, it’s that every foe has an Achilles’ Heel. No matter how unstoppable or menacing they seem, even the worst have a guaranteed take-down. Godzilla is weakened by the Anti-Nuclear Bacteria. Johnny Lawrence is susceptible to the Crane Kick. And Prince Goro can’t take a punch to the nuts.

Why should aliens be any different? Since they are usually extra strong or protected from conventional Earth weapons, it benefits to think outside the box when combating an alien menace.

Microbes – War of the Worlds

The Tripod aliens in War of the Worlds came on pretty strong, forcing man to scurry and hide like animals in whichever dark corners they could find. Between disengaging all electronics and turning humans into a bloody mulch, they seemed unstoppable. Luckily for us, it turns out they’re total pussies when it comes to germs. The aliens were quickly weakened and killed off by the microbes we interact with daily. I still think getting a bad cold sucks though.

Water – Signs

M. Night Shyamalan is a filmmaker with a perpetual target on his back. That’s not to say that it hasn’t been earned. For instance, with Signs he decided to show the more human side of an alien invasion. The problem here was not the storytelling. It was the alien race’s weakness. In the third act, the aliens who had previously remained cloaked in shadows came out of hiding to terrorize humans for some kind of reason that only the aliens know. When they proved impervious to the effects of a baseball bat, it was revealed that they reacted to water like it was acid. Why they would travel to a world whose surface is 70% water is also a mystery. Durr, aliens.

Microwaves – The Darkest Hour

How do you kill what you can’t see? During a business trip to Moscow, invisible aliens invade with weaponry that turns man to dust. While struggling to stay alive, a band of survivors discover that the aliens can be weakened by microwaves. These survivors build microwave guns to help them turn the fight against these invaders. Crazy science. How do you like that, aliens?

ActionFest premiered two scenes from the upcoming movie Weapon, starring Scott Adkins and Jean-Claude Van Damme. This is monumental to some fans. Adkins has displayed impressive feats in unexpected straight to video titles like Undisputed III and Ninja. Van Damme hasn’t gone theatrical in a while, but trust me, you’d want to see these guys go at it.

The first scene delivered just that. Roland Flint (Adkins) and Brazil (Van Damme) meet in a burnt out factory and fight. Brazil swoops down from behind Flint like Batman. Their hands fly in tight quarters, then they wield metal poles out in the open. Of course it’s a dirty old factory because those are easily available for shooting, but it’s a real old school/new school fight. Van Damme is able to move at Adkins’ speed.

They’r fighting over a contract and form a reluctant alliance. Flint has a connection to the target Polo, and he doesn’t even want a share of the contract. It’s personal. Van Damme still speaks with that accent, the one that’s been called Canadian in more than one movie’s exposition.

The next scene is not a fight but Flint comes in on a target who actually has a remote controlled gun in his office. Flint has the remote and he blasts the guy’s computer. He even shoots an outline around his target, but when he gets the information he wants, Brazil shoots the guy in the back.

It turns out Flint wanted the guy alive, and Brazil didn’t know that. They have a banter much like Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum’s “We need to work on our communication” riff from Independence Day. The important part is, Brazil suggests they take some of the guns from the office. I trust they’ll be used later in the film.

This is the first footage ever shown from Weapon, so look for the full Weapon experience later this year on DVD, Blu-ray, VOD and whatever new streaming technology gets invented by then.

A knife man and a gun guy can’t get along?  Where’s the tension?  They serve two different purposes, really.  I would have much rather heard the following synopsis:

"Jack Conway (Vinnie Jones) and Derek Chase (Jean-Claude Van Damme) are two expert knife throwers working for rival circuses, but when the evil head of a drug cartel begins to distribute narcotics to unwitting circus patrons via cotton candy, Conway and Chase must triumph over their differences in order to overthrow the cartel, one knife at a time.

"JCVD and Vinnie Jones are Big Top Blades
