Plus, photos!

You might remember a few years ago when you could see the opening heist sequence of The Dark Knight if you bought a ticket to watch Pokemon 2000 or whatever it was that was out before The Dark Knight was released. Well, our friends at Warner Brothers are doing the same thing again with the highly anticipated sequel, The Dark Knight Rises. WB has announced that the first few minutes of the movie will be released on December 21st. What is the opening scene going to be? No one knows for sure, except that it’s “an introduction to Bane, and a taste of the rest of the film.”

Now, the part about how/where you’ll actually get to see the clip is a bit unclear. The rumor for some time has been that the sneak peek would be attached to Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, which does indeed have a wide release date of December 21st. But AMC theaters recently released a statement that said only 70mm IMAX screens would show the clip, although that statement was quickly yanked after it was made. So, maybe plan on just catching it on your computer screen? I’m sure it’ll be just as good.

Oh, one more thing: Some photos from the movie have surfaced, which I’ve posted below out of the goodness of my heart. You’re welcome.

It’s October, which means the feeling in the air is perfect for some news about Warner Brothers‘ planned big-screen version of the horror / scifi / fantasy / other stuff too anthology series The Twilight Zone. Sick joke fans know that The Twilight Zone was already made into an anthology film once in the 80s, unfortunately for Vic Morrow’s head. This version isn’t going to share quite as much with the TV series, however, since it’s planned to just have one storyline.

Anyway, the studio has finally selected a director to bring that “big science fiction action movie ” storyline to the screen, and it’s Cloverfield‘s Matt Reeves. The plan is to get Reeves signed on to the project, then polish the script and get it ready for for production by the summer of 2012. No word on what the actual plot is going to involve, but since it’s The Twilight Zone it might involve aliens, robots, gremlins, nuclear holocaust, ghosts who play pool…could be anything, really.

Green Lantern may have failed to make enough money to justify its 200-million dollar budget (and that’s not including marketing costs), but that’s not stopping Warner Brothers from developing a sequel.

8 photosBlake Lively

Apparently WB is looking for franchises to replace Harry Potter, the last installment of which is coming out soon. This despite a precipitous drop in second weekend box office gross for Green Lantern, dropping 66% in box office receipts from its premiere weekend to its second. That puts it in the same group as notorious blockbuster flop, 2003′s Hulk, which dropped 70% and spawned a complete reboot of the franchise. WB seems to have confidence in Green Lantern‘s possibilities as a sequel, though. Maybe Green Lantern 2 will have star Ryan Reynolds trapped in a box for two hours. I’d watch that! (The Hollywood Reporter)

Ungawa!

The character of Tarzan has been making money for various companies since the first novel was published in 1912. And it looks like that isn’t going to change any time soon, since Warner Bros. is saying “ungawa!” to another Tarzan movie. And they’re reportedly commissioning two scripts to be written simultaneously.

One of the scripts will be written by up-and-coming screenwriter Adam Cozad, who also worked on the script for the upcoming Jack Ryan reboot. His work on reinventing a popular character might be what attracted WB executives to him for this. The other, according to reports, is being written by Craig Brewer.

This practice isn’t uncommon for big studio movies, especially ones with franchise potential – the script that doesn’t get chosen as the first movie can often be reworked into a sequel if necessary. I just hope WB can work in a cameo from Cheetah the chimp. (Deadline)

Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot entitled Superman: Man of Steel was previously assumed to be part of Warner Brother’s ambitious Justice League Initiative. After all, what is Zack Snyder if not a company man? But it turns out that something even lamer is afoot. According to Snyder himself, the Justice League franchise will be altogether separate from the Christopher Nolan Batman series and the Snyder Superman series:

“Like what Chris Nolan is doing and what I’m doing with Superman, what they’ll do with Justice League will be its own thing with its own Batman and own Superman. We’ll be over here with our movie and they’ll kinda get to do it twice which is kinda cool.”

Hey Warner Brothers, why not just give Superman and Batman a sitcom together if you don’t care how many of them are out there? I know that Superman and Batman have been corporate-owned characters for decades and their main purpose on this Earth is to make money, but this still strikes me as cheap. The only way this could be good news is if the two versions of Superman might one day fight each other.
Will this generation be able to understand the next generation's 'Batman'?

The world is on bat-tenterhooks in anticipation of Christopher Nolan‘s sequel to The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises. So it only makes sense that Warner Bros would want to capitalize on that anticipation by ensuring that the Batman brand doesn’t get watered down with a bunch of sub-par sequels and remake– what’s that? They’re doing the exact opposite of that? Oh, right:

“We have the third Batman, but then we’ll have to reinvent Batman. Chris Nolan and [producing partner and wife] Emma Thomas will be producing it, so it will be a conversation with them about what the next phase is.”

That was WB chief Jeff Robinov, in case you want a name to put to the horrible idea. Apparently, the idea is for the “new” Batman to take part in WB’s Justice League movie (along with Henry Cavill as Superman, possibly Ryan Reynolds at Green Lantern, and whoever ends up playing Wonder Woman and The Flash), since it’s a sure bet that Christian Bale won’t be involved in that nonsense.

It’s also surprising that Nolan is evidently going to be involved with this reboot, despite the fact that it threatens to turn ‘Batman’ movies into total non-events (how excited are you for the next James Bond movie?). My guess is that he’ll be able to turn whatever weird ideas he has in his head into movies he wants as a result of this partnership.

First you saw a movie about Facebook, now you’ll be able to watch movies on Facebook! Warner Brothers has announced that they’re going to begin offering movies for rent and purchase on Facebook. Basically, by “liking” a movie being offered on Facebook, you’ll be able to rent it, which included exciting features such as pausing (wow!) and commenting (game-changer!). All of this, of course, will take place on your Facebook page.

The first movie being offered by the studio shows they aren’t interested in taking any chances – it’s the most financially successful movie in Warner Brothers history, Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight. Wait – didn’t everyone already see that? Anyway, the studio will presumably be rolling out more and more movies as time goes on. Perhaps next you’ll be able to check your Facebook on the big screen at the movie theater.
‘Lethal Weapon’ Reboot: Gibson Gettin’ Too Racist For This Sh*t

All signs point toward the quintessential buddy cop franchise is getting the oh-so-trendy "reboot" in the near future.

All signs point toward the quintessential buddy cop franchise getting the oh-so-trendy “reboot” in the near future. It appears that Mel Gibson, the star of the first four episodes, has found his way into some public relations problems recently and Warner Brothers thinks it best not to touch him with a ten-foot pole. As for Danny Glover, no announcement was made, but they’re probably just sick of his face.

No casting or timeline info has been divulged by the studio, only that the project has been reassigned to another exec to be rescued “from development hell.” Sounds promising. We can undoubtedly expect the studio to go younger with the leads in the hopes of hanging their hat on another decades-long franchise. In their coverage, The Hollywood Reporter suggests Jeremy Renner, which is a solid, if uninspired, choice. A female lead could do more to cross demographics, so don’t be surprised if “I’m too menopausal for this shit!” starts adorning t-shirts the nation over. The buddy-cop genre lends itself to so many different classifications of actors that trying to find the perfect two is a fool’s errand. Can anyone definitively say if Vin Diesel and Taye Diggs would be any better or worse than Ashton Kutcher and Jeff Goldblum or Jason Segel and Angelina Jolie? Probably not, but that won’t keep the internet from trying.

Shane Black has been tapped by Warner Brothers to direct his follow up to 2005's Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, an adaptation of his favorite Japanese Manga: Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata's Death Note.

Shane Black, the once incredibly prolific spec script wunderkind (he sold Lethal Weapon on spec for $250,000 straight out of UCLA film school and went on an absolute tear after that) has been tapped by Warner Brothers to direct his follow up to 2005′s Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, an adaptation of his favorite Japanese Manga: Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata’s Death Note. Black will oversee a script written by Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry, and he sounds VERY excited about the project:

“It’s my favorite manga, I was just struck by its unique and brilliant sensibility,” Black said. “What we want to do is take it back to that manga, and make it closer to what is so complex and truthful about the spirituality of the story, versus taking the concept and trying to copy it as an American thriller. Jeff Robinov and Greg Silverman liked that.”

Death Note, about a mystical notebook that has the power to kill anyone who’s name is written on it, has sold over 38 million copies worldwide, and has been franchised into animated and feature films, a cartoon series, novels and video games in Japan.
