HAHAHAHAHA. F*ck no.

It’s been about three months since we first ran the report that True Detective will have multiple lead roles. Then we piecemeal-ly reported that Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, and Taylor Kitsch were all being considered to be leads in the second installment of HBO’s True Detective anthology. About a month later, we received word that every woman who had ever tried acting in any form or way was being considered for the female role.

Then we announced that Colin Farrell was joining. A few days later, we reported that Vince Vaughn had spent half an hour trying to roll off his couch to announce that he was definitely joining. Then a month ago TO THE DAY (almost…the 25th of September), we announced that Rachel McAdams was eh, PRETTY CLOSE TO SIGNING ON AS WELL, MAYBE!

There was only one greasy-haired, troubled piece of the puzzle left. And guess what? The family dog just pooped out that puzzle piece. So it’s my great pleasure to announce that Taylor Kitsch will be in a TV show that we’ve spent the past two months pretty much assuming he was going to be in anyway. He confirmed it by mumbling in an AdWeek interview. Really.

Now Taylor will be able to draw from his Friday Night Lights days and show Rust Cohle how one really goes about crushing 12 Lone Stars over the course of an interrogation.

There’s been a LOT of buzz over True Detective casting the past few months, and now that we’ve got two of the stars down in Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell, it’s only appropriate that someone cobbled together a fake trailer out of existing footage.

Someone did. And it’s terrific. In fact, I give it my highest rating ever. Six thumbs up.

If we could get Elizabeth Moss signed on for some Peggy moments in here, that would just up the comedy value. Until the other two leads get announced, maybe we just have big bouncing question marks in half the video. That wouldn’t be annoying.

After news this weekend that, yes, Colin Farrell is going to star in the next season of True Detective, just like was reported months ago, word comes down from the mountaintop that Vince “Schlubmeister” Vaughn will be brushing Dorito crumbs off his shirt to star in the series as well.

2/3 of the prophecy has been fulfilled, and now we await word that the third person to be rumored to star, Taylor Kitsch, has signed on. We’re almost there! Just one left, guys!

Vaughn will be playing Frank Semyon, which is a good name, but no Rust Cohle. An inferior name will not prevent me from making “flat circle” jokes at EVERY. DAMN. TURN. so just bear with me for the duration of the run of the show, please.

In summary, still outstanding are the Kitsch announcement and breaking the news to the many women who are in contention for the female lead. It’s going to be a difficult decision, but only one actress will have the privilege of becoming a flat circle for the HBO drama.

1997′s favorite cool LA party guys from Swingers, Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau, have gone on to unequivocal success. For Favreau it’s been as a big-budget director, and for Vince Vaughn, it’s been playing a fast-talking jerk with fluctuating weight.

But they haven’t really appeared together in a starring capacity since the underwhelming Made. (We’ll pretend Couples Retreat didn’t happen.) But that’s set to change with the crime drama Term Life, which actually sounds pretty badass.

Vaughn plays a thief who’s got the cops, mob, and a bunch of other people out to get him, and has taken out a life insurance policy that doesn’t pay out unless he survives for 21 days. Jon Favreau’s role isn’t clear, but let’s guess that he plays a cop or a mobster. Either one would be terrific.

Let’s see if they can get back to their fighting weights, if not literally, than at least figuratively.

Vince Vaughn & Owen Wilson are back together at the movies this weekend with The Internship, a film which sets them up as interns at Google even though they’re totally old. We got invited to speak with Mr. Vaughn about the film but decided it was more fun to ask him the random questions that pop up when you enter his name into Google. These are the questions that everybody clearly wants to know!

Our findings: he probably had a good reason for dumping Jennifer Aniston, his hair is all Vince, and he did not die in Jurassic Park or in real life.

Wes Mantooth, son of well-known saint, Dorothy Mantooth, was an important figure in the plot of Anchorman. Once an adversary, but now a respected ally, Vince Vaughn’s Channel 9 newsman is a fan favorite. Will we see him in the next chapter in the Anchorman saga?

Yeah, probably.

While doing press in the UK, Vaughn spoke to his involvement in the sequel and offered up some dream casting for the role of his mom, who really is such a saint.

“The chances are better than not that Wes Mantooth will be there,” he said.

And what of his Moms?

”I don’t know if anyone can fill that role, she’s such a saint. Angela Lansbury as Dorothy?”

Mmmmm… Lansbury’s okay and all, but there’s only one actress for Dorothy in my heart. And that would be Gert. She’s got saint written all over her.

Vince Vaughn knows what America wants. He knew before even we did that we wanted things like Couples Retreat, Fred Claus, and The Watch. Now, he plans on harnessing that prescience and using it to give us a new, modern version of The Brady Bunch! On CBS!

Because it’s important that he sticks to the proper Brady mythology, lest everyone be totally confused and angry that this Brady Bunch reboot is not faithful to the Brady Bunch origins stories that we as a nation hold so dear, the series will focus on a divorced Bobby Brady, who marries a woman with children of her own. Just like his father did so many years before.

Not much else is known at this time, other than the fact that Vince Vaughn will be sitting as executive producer. Also, it is known that this is a terrible idea and Vince Vaughn is a terrible person for doing this.

Tony Scott must be wearing beer goggles. There are confusing reports that the director is setting up his next action film, Lucky Strike, to star doughy comedic actor Vince Vaughn. Yes. That Vince Vaughn.

There’s no word on which character Vaughn will play, but Lucky Strike follows a DEA agent who teams with a drug runner to take down a cartel. If it were a fudge cartel, I’d believe the casting, but maybe his character doesn’t need to do a lot of running around. He could be a really good sniper or something like that, and could flee explosions on a Jazzy scooter. I think I speak for the entire population of Earth when I say we much prefer to see that movie. Still whose to say this will be made in the near future. It’s all contingent on Scott’s crazy busy schedule and whether or not there’s a role available for Jon Favreau. (Deadline)

The haunted shadow that once was Jonah Hill is indeed joining the Ben Stiller science-fiction omedy Neighborhood Watch. The Akiva Schaffer comedy also stars Vince Vaughn and follows a group of neighborhood dads who start a neighborhood watch as a means to get away from their families and goof off. The plot kicks in when they stumble upon and must thwart a plot to destroy the world. Hill will play a sidekick to Vaughn’s character, one who always makes up things about his “rough” past.

This is the first role for Hill since he stepped into Captain America‘s Superhumanizer and set it to reverse. (THR)

On the heels of news yesterday that Rosemarie DeWitt will be playing Ben Stiller’s wife in Neighborhood Watch, today we get slightly more compelling news that Jonah Hill is in talks to join the familiar tandem of Stiller and Vince Vaughn in the “everyman vs. aliens” comedy.

Certainly, the well-worn pairing of Stiller and Vaughn could use a little spice, but is Hill the right guy for the job? Hill is hilarious in his own right, but the cast and familiar premise could use a bit more than just “a funny guy;” it could use a decent dose of something different. In Moneyball, Superbad, and the upcoming The Sitter, we’ve seen Hill tackle different personas, but he’ll need to really stretch to bust the audience out of the familiar Stiller/Vaughn funk.

Neighborhood Watch will follow two suburban dads (guess who) as they stumble upon an extraterrestrial threat from which they must save their community. Huh. Might want to bring in Christopher Walken, Zach Galifianakis, and a Quentin Tarantino cameo just to be safe.

It’s appears to be a coincidence, but it’s our job in the media to turn this into some sort of anti-Wahlberg vendetta. As 2 Guns eyes a winter start, David O. Russell is reported to have walked away due to a scheduling conflict with The Silver Linings Playbook, while Vince Vaughn‘s reason for departure is unknown. Crippling co-dependence on David O. Russell, perhaps.

2 Guns is the film adaptation of a comic book of the same name, in which a Naval officer and a DEA agent unwittingly investigate each other while stealing mob money for the CIA. However, they soon learn that they’ve been stealing from the CIA for the mob. Stuff ensues.

It’s unknown if Wahlberg will be playing Vaughn’s character or the other lead. It really doesn’t matter, because Wahlberg, with that vacant, befuddled stare, has demonstrated he can nail “unwitting.”

Higher education arouses deep nostalgia, particularly for those youthful transgressions you just can’t get away with now.  Your were not nearly as cool as you think you were during those 4.5 years you spent at junior college, which is why these college movies that never get old. Gather some great material for your own upcoming collegiate hijinks or revel in the sweet memories of those ridiculous times as that evil grin belonging to your 19-year-old self resurfaces Break out your college sweaters, grab some libations and submerge yourself in the funniness of the cinematic college experience.

PCU

Jeremy Piven destroys anything that comes into view with a sarcastic wit that is timeless and perfect for a college movie. Teamed up with a larger Jon Favreau, Piven gives lessons in college etiquette along with an enlightened and useful view of classes to take as a freshman that are the Rosetta Stone of education. PCU takes no hostages among the various factions at their school, demystifying the higher education experience with an almost religious fervor. Roll around in the genius of this movie until you stink of old sheets and older pizza crusts. Pay particular attention to Piven’s advice about overcoming the lack of a car.

Road Trip

Tom Green with a snake in Road Trip

Surpassing adolescence as the premier rite of passage into adulthood is the cross-country car trip with your buds. Road Trip tosses together an unlikely group of friends and acquaintances and sends them across America to take care of a certain mistakenly sent package to one of their girlfriends. An amusing college movie that shows off a deep love for the buddy travel genre, Road Trip bookends the journey with the universally dreaded end of term finals—the heart of the movie is the companions realizing they need to be freed from from thei high school past in order to experience the present.

Old School

Will Ferrell partying in Old School

A soul check of a movie because if you’re not dying of laughter by the time a certain flying tackle into a fountain that takes place, then there’s a probably a good chance you spent your childhood torturing small animals. The college frat gets a remodel when a bunch of guys well past their prime decide they can start up their own—and it steam rolls into the land of belly laughs and snorts from there. The inability to let go of their early twenties is the main center of focus here, but it’ buried under a surface of the classic bonding of miscreants and weirdoes who form the same bonds that a typical fraternity would produce. Will Ferrell is on point in Old School with Vince Vaughn flanking him as they combine into a Voltron of awesomeness making this a college movie you can watch again and again.

Accepted

Justin Long and Jonah Hill in Accepted

Ingenious in its concept about a fake college acceptance letter that snowballs into the need to actually build a fake university to perpetuate the lie, Accepted makes your adolescent fears of not getting in anywhere a reality and then pushes it off a cliff. Timeless is the fear of rejection and the necessity is the mother of invention and all that jazz. Seeing Lewis Black play a dean and eventual professor alone is worth seeing, not to mention you’ll garner some valuable insight into the sheep-like pursuit of higher education. Whaddaya know, you might just learn something.

Back to School

Rodney Dangerfield throwing a football in Back To School

Back to School doesn’t even bother saying hello before it tears into the sanctity of college with wild abandon. Rodney Dangerfield is at his peak as a father who feels out of touch with his son and chooses to attend school with him so they can share the experience. The problem being that Dangerfield plays a rich businessman and therefore knows how money makes the world go round and applies it to his classes and his free time. Quips and one-liners bounce off the scenery with enough slapstick to satisfy any type of comedy lover. Without any need for a moral anchor, this film strives to deliver as much laughter as possible while carrying along a story that’s built on a foundation of the love between a dad and his son.

In news that makes sense because, really, could it happen any other way, Vince Vaughn will be joining Ben Stiller in the Akiva Schaffer-helmed Neighborhood Watch. This comedy will follow Stiller and Vaughn as regular-Joe dads that find their involvement in their neighborhood crime watch could save the planet.

Both Stiller and Vaughn could use something of a fresh start after spending the past five or so years largely coasting in rom-com and sequel fare to lackluster popular and critical reception. It would seem that this could serve as an excellent opportunity with the edgier Schaffer behind the camera and a recent draft of the script penned by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the braintrusts behind Superbad.

So with the pedigree of director and writers, let’s hope that there’s at least some semblance of a wrinkle here. Perhaps Ben Stiller could be a junkie like he was in Permanent Midnight and Vince Vaughn could play a sex-crazed self-mutilator. No? Okay, no.

Jason Bateman loves the buddy system. Never one to star in a film alone, this time he’s gotten Vince Vaughn to saddle up (metaphorically) with him for Insane Laws, a buddy comedy that examines the changing dynamic of a male relationship as two men age, have kids, and the grandkids. So Vince Vaughn will be playing a grandfather. That’s kind of depressing, even though Vince Vaughn does kind of look like a grandfather.

The film will be helmed by writer-turned-director Jeremy Garelick, who wrote The Break-Up and did some work on The Hangover. The movie could go into production as early as this fall, Deadline reports.

Every aspect of this project seems to make sense to me except for the title. My gut instinct is that it’s a play on “in-laws.” I hope that’s not the case, only because the wordplay is really, really, really awful. Or maybe they’re just gonna poke fun at some wacky laws. In Texas there’s a law that you can’t take more than three sips of beer while standing. That legislation is ripe for satire.

After the mighty four-pack of awesome movies that is Fred Claus, Four Christmases, Couples Retreat and The Dilemma, I know most of you out there are tearing your hair out for more Vince Vaughn. “I gotta have my Vaughn” has become a popular expression around college campuses and night spots. Well, not to worry Vaughnonauts, cause Vince has booked another role.

Vaughn has joined the cast of Lay The Favorite, starring alongside Bruce Willis and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Based on a book by Beth Raymer, it’s the story of a married gambling legend (Willis) who gets involved with a younger woman and figures out a system for getting an edge on Las Vegas. Sounds like he’s gambling with his money… and his marriage. That’d be twice the stakes, according to movie math. Vaughn will play the role of Rosie, a bookie from Long Island. Hopefully the role is at least somewhat money.

Stephen Frears is directing from an adaptation by writer/producer D.V. De Vincentis. (Deadline)

Universal Pictures is in discussions to pick up Jeremy Garelick’s script for Insane Laws, a film about two childhood friends who have to deal with some uncomfortable truths when their grown children fall in love with each other. The project will serve as a Vince Vaughn vehicle, as Garelick having scripted Vaughn’s blockbuster Th Break Up in 2006. With Grown UpsI Hate You, Dad, and this inevitable project, it would seem that studios are banking on moving once-edgy comedians into a blander, more accesible stage of adulthood in which they raise kids and do nothing funny ever.

Columbia had picked up the script for millions in 2009, but now it would appear that Universal is moving forward with the project, though details of the transaction between the two aren’t available.

It was widely speculated in my own head that Vaughn’s childhood friend will be either be Kevin James or a CGI talking dog voiced by Kevin James. (THR)

Honestly, what the hell happened to Vince Vaughn? And no, I’m not making a joke about his weight. If I lived in Chicago and had access to the Italian beef and sausage combo on a daily basis, my ass would look a lot like Queen Latifah’s, so there’s no judgment there. Wha I am making a joke about is his career, which is also starting to look a lot like Queen Latifah’s.

It’s not like Vaughn was the next Peter Sellers, but he did star in some memorable films: Swingers, Old School, and Anchor Man, to name a few. His last decent film, The Wedding Crashers, was a critical and commercial success, bringing in close to $300 million. But it’s been six years since Vaughn’s been in something that didn’t suck less on screen than Chloë Sevigny. His latest film, The Dilemma, is currently tanking at the box office, which is due in no small part to the fact that it’s rocking a 25% favorable rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critical reception isn’t everything, especially for a comedy. But considering that 25% is more than double what his last film scored, it’s clearly not an isolated incident.

Of his four previous films*, The Break-Up is the highest rated at 34%. Fours Christmases is next with 25%, followed by Fred Claus at 21% and rounded out with Couples Retreat at a whopping 12%. If you combine all four of those scores, the total is still seven points below Toy Story 3. I understand that not every attempt is going to be a hit. Making a film is extremely difficult work, and it’s easy for an asshole hack like myself to sit in my underwear and criticize via the Internet. But the fact that it’s easy for me to criticize doesn’t mean I’m wrong. Vaughn’s last five years of work are an embarrassment by any reasonable standard.

So, what caused Vaughn to pull an Adam Sandler? While there’s no telling for sure, it’s worth noting that Vaughn and his sister Victoria began Wild West Picture Show Productions in 2006, and the company was responsible for the five turds we’ve already discussed. This could just be a coincidence, but all things considered, it would be one hell of a fluke. Maybe the added responsibility of producing has clouded Vaughn’s judgment. Or perhaps he simply gave up all pretense of making a quality product and is now worried only about the bottom line. In either case, any moron (like myself) who knows how to use IMDB can spot the correlation between Vaughn’s career as a producer and a dramatic drop in the quality of his films.

To be clear, Vaughn is not only likable, but talented. That’s what makes the whole situation so frustrating. To see the guy who played Beanie Campbell in Old School sharing the screen with Paul Blart is depressing, and the fact that it’s in a romantic comedy just adds insult to injury. It’s one thing to see a struggling/washed up actor doing crap films to make ends meet. But Vaughn can literally do anything he wants, and he chooses to make Couples Retreat.

There may be hope for Vaughn, as there are rumors of an upcoming project with director David O. Russell. Although to put things into perspective, Ron Howard directed The Dilemma, so even a good director is no guarantee. But whatever happens, it’s high time Vince Vaughn decided to, once again, start making comedies that are actually funny.

Actually, scratch that. It’s high time Vaughn decided to start acting in comedies that are actually funny. He should leave the producing to someone else.

* Note: Into the Wild was not included because Vaughn did not have a starring role.

The movie of the weekend (at least as far as box office was concerned) was Michel Gondry‘s (or was it actually Seth Rogen’s?) The Green Hornet. While the movie didn’t bust any box office records, it still did pretty damn well, making $34 million despite all the myriad delays and creative conflicts that led up to its release, not to mention the mixed reviews. Why was this? It’s impossible to know for sure, but despite those aforementioned mixed reviews, every time I saw a trailer for The Green Hornet last year, it always got huge laughs from the other people in the audience. Maybe people just came to see Seth Rogen shoot himself with his gas gun (not a euphemism).

In other news, The Green Hornet’s next nemesis might be Vince Vaughn, whose Ron Howard-directed romantic comedy The Dilemma had to settle for second-best, making $17.4 million, which you math wizards already know is about half the weekend gross of The Green Hornet.

In the “exciting” world of limited release, the only shining light in Paul Giamatti in Barney’s Version (for which he won a Golden Globe last night), which made $17,925 per screen on four screens. Four screens! It’s like when an election is really close and you wonder if maybe the results would have been different if you’d voted. (The AV Club)

From Academy Award winning director Ron Howard comes a January movie. The Dilemma is about a dilemma that’s very real, but it’s not funny. So they fill the movie with contrived B.S. that’s also not funny.

Ronny (Vince Vaughn) and Nick (Kevin James) are couple friends. They’re best friends but they always hang out with their significant others too — Ronny’s wife Geneva (Winona Ryder) and Nick’s girlfriend Beth (Jennifer Connelly). They talk about what it takes to really know someone, and they dance because you liked Kevin James dancing in Hitch.

Nick and Ronny have a car idea for GM. That’s the big job they work on in between relationship issues. I always wonder who comes up with the jobs people do in movies when they don’t actually matter. Did screenwriter Allan Loeb really think, “I really want to tell the story of electric engine designers in crisis?” Or did he say, “Let Ron Howard figure out what they do for a living.”

While scouting a location for his own proposal, Ronny catches Geneva making out with a dude we’ll later learn is Zip (Channing Tatum). Does he tell his best friend? Would it be more human to wait until all the pressure of the GM deal is over? Well, it’s a movie so any mature decision Ronny could make is off the table.

Remember when Vince Vaughn used to keep it real? No gimmicks, just breaking the tension of real relationships with comedy. To fill out two hours in The Dilemma, he has to fall into some poison plants that make his pee hurt, argue over the audience trick shot at a hockey game, and climb trees to spy on Zip.

Vaughn is out of things to riff about, so he does the speech from Miracle. Ronny makes up lies about what trouble he’s been in because he can’t tell Beth he’s planning a proposal and he can’t tell Nick what he knows. Dropping a wad of cash (intended for a ring) and keeping secrets make it look like Ronny’s gambling again. Misunderstanding circumstances is not the same as a joke.

The women give some powerhouse performances though. Geneva shows Ronny how she can turn on the tears if she has to claim Ronny made a pass at her to cover her ass. It’s pretty evil, but evil is not funny. Beth is the most amazing girlfriend ever. In the face of ridiculous behavior, she wants to be supportive and Ronny’s the ass to refuse. Queen Latifah talks about her lady wood in an embarrassing bit part, and it’s so funny that she says it twice. But Connelly and Ryder make something out of this nonsense.

There is some good drama in the resolution, but this ain’t the drama version. They had their chance to make a drama and they made the wrong choice.

Continuing his countdown from Three Kings, David O. Russell is about to jump into 2 Guns, a Vince Vaughn vehicle that is based on a military comic book of the same name. Russell is expected to rewrite the original Blake Masters draft and direct the film, which has been held by Universal since Vaughn was attached in 2008. Negotiations to get Russell on board are advanced and are expected to be finalized very soon.

Two Guns has a Mr. and Mrs. Smith-like premise in that it features two Naval officers investigating each other unbeknownst to one another. The two then find that they have stolen money from the government for the mob and they presumably go forth to set things right and save their own lives. The other lead has not been announced, but Vaughn’s ability to react and riff should open the field up to just about any actor or actress with a pulse and a SAG card.

2 Guns is a property of Boom! Studios, the founders of which, Andrew Cosby and Ross Richie, are serving as producers of the film as well. No timeline has been given for production or release, but this has all the makings of a tentpole release. Here’s to hoping we get the slim Vince Vaughn for this one. (Hollywood Reporter)

Hopefully during the character's travels he gets stranded in STL, forcing production to shoot mostly there for authenticity's sake. Lord knows they could use the money for another strip mall built around an Olive Garden.

Vince Vaughn and David O. Russell have been gabbing for weeks about their Old St. Louis project, and now it looks like Universal will let them play in their sandbox. O. Russell wrote the script and would make the film his followup to The FighterDeadline reports:

Old St. Louis is the story of a traveling salesman who has been an absentee father, and how his life changes when his daughter becomes part of his life. Vaughn would play the salesman, and actresses including Kick-Ass star Chloe Moretz have been mentioned as possibles to play the daughter.

Kevin James and Vince Vaughn to Double-Team Craft Services Table http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/kevin-james-and-vince-vaughn-to-double-team-craft-services-table/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/kevin-james-and-vince-vaughn-to-double-team-craft-services-table/#comments Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 A lot of food gets wasted on film and commercial sets but that shouldn't be a problem on Ron Howard's upcoming comedy. Kevin James is expected to sign-on to play opposite Vince Vaughn in the untitled comedy about infidelity. In the film, Vaughn will play a man who finds out his best friend's wife is cheating and struggles with what to do with that knowledge. James, who appears next in Grown Ups, will play the betrayed friend who struggles with a pair of Docker's.It's good to see Ron Howard returning to comedy. I'm optimistic that these three will turn out genuinely touching, funny moments with a lot of heart. An enlarged heart, if you will. (THR)
