Will Walt get his happy ending?

Now that it’s 2013, we need to face that Breaking Bad will soon return for it’s final episodes. Theories abound about the never predictable show but they’re just theories. With several questions still open, there’s no way to know how Vince Gilligan plans to wrap everything up. Unless you just ask him.

Gilligan doesn’t reveal spoilers about the drama’s final scenes but he does speak to what his goals are.

“It’s going to be polarizing no matter how you slice it,” Gilligan told Vulture, “but you don’t want 10 percent to say it was great and 90 percent to say it sucked ass. You want those numbers to be reversed.” According to Gilligan, he’s looking for something less Scarface and more along the lines of Casablanca.

“No one gets everything they wanted. The guy doesn’t get the girl, but he has the satisfaction of knowing she wants him. And he doesn’t get her because he has to save the free world. What better ending is there than that? I’m not saying we’re going to approach that or reach in that direction. Our story doesn’t line up [with Casablanca]. But we’re looking for that kind of satisfaction.”

So there’s still a chance for a shoot-out with neo-Nazis. Cool.

Looks like bad *puts on sunglasses*...is about to be broken.

It‘s hard to believe that it’s been five months since the season finale of Breaking Bad. Time flies when you’re…not watching Breaking Bad, I guess. Your patience will soon be rewarded, as Bryan Cranston let his disciples on Twitter know.

The Tweet reads:

“a few weeks before cameras roll on season 5. I cant wait. I love doing this show and will miss it when its time to say goodbye. Airs in July.”

So there you have it. Hard to misinterpret. Though this isn’t an official announcement, but it’s sort of like if Tom Hanks told you that you had a little food on your lip – you’d believe it, wouldn’t you?

So put your trust in Bryan “Cranst” Cranston, and get your popcorn ready!*

(*You only need to start preparing your Breaking Bad popcorn now if you really suck at making popcorn.)

It’s official. AMC and Breaking Bad are will continue to go steady until graduation. Though the couple flirted with the idea of breaking up (Breaking Bad even gave its number to rival networks), they’ve worked out their issues and will remain exclusive for a final run of sixteen episodes. The plan is to begin production in early 2012 and film them all at once with the potential of teasing viewers by splitting them up into two seasons. Bryan Cranston will then be free to appear in every movie.

It’s projected that Walter Jr. will deliver an estimated six lines of dialogue in the final sixteen episodes.

Much like the meth cooked by Walter White on AMC‘s Breaking Bad, the show itself has become so good that everyone wants a piece of it. That’s why Sony Pictures Television has had clandestine meet-ups with other networks out in the desert. With renewal talks dragging on between the studio and AMC Network, the acclaimed drama is being shopped around. This is fairly common practice and doesn’t necessarily mean that the show will jump networks, but it does point to other problems.

As the show grows more expensive, AMC has proposed scaling back the order for season five from thirteen episodes to six or eight. The show producers refused to do this and then killed their best friend with a box cutter to illustrate how serious they are. But the bigger issue here is the show’s life span. Series creator Vince Gilligan has always said that next season will be the last. However, the ratings are pouring in like never before as strong word of mouth is bringing more and more viewers to the show.

“There’s nothing definitive on that show,” says senior VP of programming Joel Stillerman when asked about Gilligan’s statement. “We need to make a decision on season 5 and then we’ll decide with Vince with Sony if that’s it or if it can be ongoing after that. The kind of demo delivery gains seen in season 4 are potentially unprecedented. We’re thrilled.”

So that’s where we’re at. The genius who creates the show wants out at a certain point for the story’s sake. Admirable. But, the network wants to milk it for all the profit it is worth. Hopefully, they won’t hire a young writer to shadow Gilligan and learn his secrets from him. That can only end with blood on everybody’s hands. (EW)

Our editor has been rubbing it in our handsome faces that he’s got his hands on advanced screeners of the new season of Breaking Bad which he has no intention of sharing with us.
How much more 'Breaking Bad' will we get?

I first met Vince Gilligan at last year’s Saturn Awards. breaking Bad won the Saturn for Best Syndicated/Cable TV Series again this year, from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films. Gilligan could not have been more gracious, hanging out backstage with his statue talking about his show.

Season four starts July 17, and Gilligan is directing the last two episodes of the season. He gave us some scoop about the beginning and end of the season as such, and some general thoughts on the cast.
<a class='img' href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/video/walt-is-a-one-man-wrecking-crew-in-breaking-bad-season-four-trailer/' title='Walt Is A One-Man Wrecking Crew In 'Breaking Bad' Season Four Trailer'>
Walt Is A One-Man Wrecking Crew In 'Breaking Bad' Season Four Trailer

Q: Do you feel like a returning champion at the Saturn Awards?

Vince Gilligan: I feel so fortunate to be here. I love the Saturn Awards. They are so much fun. They are for my money the most fun awards show in the world with the Golden Globes in distant second. The Golden Globes were pretty fun too but the Saturn Awards are the most fun.

Q: There’s been drama on AMC with the Mad Men deal. Is your deal smooth sailing for more seasons of “Breaking Bad?”

VG: Yeah, pretty much. AMC’s a great company and there are a lot of good people there. I’ve got a new deal coming up for season five, which hopefully we’ll get. I don’t foresee it being too tough just so long as they want to make a season five. All that matters to me is we get to finish our story that we started so long ago, what feels like so long ago. It wasn’t really that long ago but I’m hoping we get to finish Walter White’s story, the story of his family in a proper way. That’s all that matters to me really.

Q: What can we expect from season four?

VG: You can expect a lot of really intricate plotting and a lot of darkness but a lot of darkness leavened with a lot of unexpected humor. You can expect a lot of gamesmanship between Walter White and his opposite number, Gustavo Fring who is perhaps even a more brilliant, cunning person than Walt himself is. It’s quite a game of chess they will be playing in season four.

Q: How much time passes between seasons three and four?

VG: Between season three and season four, literally minutes. Mere minutes pass.

Q: Was that the plan from when you wrote the season three finale or a decision you make every season?

VG: We kind of make it every season but we had a pretty good idea of where we would pick up at the end of last season. We always try to paint ourselves into what looks like a corner but we also try to not go off on hiatus no knowing where we’re going turn next storywise. We try to spend a day or two thinking about what happens next before we break for the end of each season. The end of season three was no different.

Q: Did you have to direct the last two episodes in a row or did you plan it that way?

VG: We block shot the last two episodes and what that means is you board them and shoot them all as one giant episode. So you might be shooting a scene from episode 12 in the morning and then in the afternoon you’re shooting a scene in the same location from episode 13 and that’s a way of maximizing your budget and minimizing the number of moves you have to make. Any time you move all the trucks on a TV show like Breaking Bad it’s about $25,000 just to literally move the circus as we call it, all the folks who are needed to be there to shoot. So you block shoot and you save money. Therefore since we’re block shooting, it requires one director instead of two, I figured I’d be greedy and take the two for myself.

Q: You premiere on the 17th of July. Will you come to Comic Con?

VG: I’m hoping we have some sort of presence at Comic Con. It’s a wonderful thing and I would love for there to be some sort of Breaking Bad presence. As of yet I’m not sure that we necessarily will be. The issue may be that the subject matter, a guy who sells crystal meth, may be a little trickier or troublesome for the folks who run Comic Con because there’s a lot of kids who show up at Comic Con. I think the folks at Comic Con are good folks and I think we’ve got a lot of fans there, but unfortunately I think the meth angle was a little tricky when you try to appeal to families and younger kids, and I understand that completely.

Q: Did season four follow the path you expected, or are the episodes you come upon a new creative decision?

VG: Well, every episode brings us some opportunity for invention, even though we try to plot out the season as much in advance as we possibly can. There’s always interesting sort of side tracks and avenues that are open to us to take, so there were a few surprises for us in season four but hopefully a lot of big surprises in season four for the viewers.

Q: Will we get to see Walt in his undies again?

VG: You see Walt right now to beyond the undies actually in season four. Bryan Cranston will not be denied. He has to be naked as often as possible. He has to be free like a bird.

Q: We got to see Bryan Cranston in Drive, which he was amazing in. We should thank you for bringing more attention to him. Are you gratified to see the recognition he’s getting in other roles?

VG I am so gratified to see the deserved recognition Bryan Cranston gets and Aaron Paul is now getting.

Q: Is the rest of your cast getting enough love?

VG: I think Bryan Cranston, and Aaro Paul is starting to get enough love. I’m hoping the same will follow for Anna Gunn, Dean Norris, Betsy Brandt and RJ Mitte. We have such an amazing core ensemble. Then Giancarlo Esposito, Jonathan Banks, David Costabile, we’re just blessed with the very deep bench of fine, fine actors on this show. I would love to see them all get even more praise and acclaim because they deserve just a ton of praise and acclaim for the show. They do such a great job and they make the show what it is.

"Breaking Bad" recently finished up a creatively astounding third season on AMC, and left me wanting so badly I wouldn’t be above breaking stuff to get a resolution to the nail-biting cliffhanger. Looks like I shouldn’t be expecting answers anytime soon though. Screen Junkies caught up with series creator/exec-producer/creative genius Vince Gilligan on the red carpet at the Saturn Awards last night, and he shared with us some of his plans for Season Four of "Breaking Bad," including its tentative return date.

CHECK OUT WHAT VINCE HAD TO SAY AFTER THE JUMP…

The new schedule for next season:
“We are going to get back in the room in early July and we’re looking forward to doing that. We’re going to go back on the air in I think July of 2011 so it’s a little ways off but we’ve got a lot of lead time to hopefully make the best show we can make.”

That means extra time writing in preproduction:
“It’s going to be a lot more pre/writing time which is very good for us."

And the plot’s not set yet:
"I could be coy and say I can’t say that because it’s top secret, but the truth is I don’t really know yet. We’re going to kind of make it up as we go along. I’ve got a few ideas swirling around in there but we do try to do our show sort of like, I like to think of it, and I’m not musician, but I like to think of it as freeform jazz. We sort of like to improvise sort of like jazz musicians do."

And don’t worry about the themes:
“I try not to think in terms of broad themes too much because it has a tendency to get in the way of good fun storytelling. So we don’t think in terms of themes. We let the audience tell us what we’re writing about thematically.”

I don’t want to go into details about season three’s conclusion for fear of pissing off the people who still have it DVR’d, but let’s just say next season the sh*t is really going to hit the fan. It’s hard to comprehend that anymore could possibly hit the fan, but they’re going to have to get a bigger fan and a bigger sh*t for season four to top last season. One year of frustration ahead until ou thirst is satiated.

If you haven’t seen AMC’s look ahead for Season Four, check it out below. It’s just the cast riffing on what they think might happen, but it’s interesting nonetheless.
