It would appear the NES/PC hit video game Rampage is getting adapted to a live–action film (albeit one that probably has a ton of CGI). For those young pups out there, Rampage was a simplistic, one-screen video game in the late-80′s that allowed the player to take on the role of Godzilla and destroy cities, swat down helicopters, and eat people. That was it. There was no greater good, and your reward for doing it well was getting to do it again, but this at night.

Simpler times.

This immediately appeals to me in a way that Starship Troopers appeals to me. Easy on the plot, just show some giant animals (that in the game are actually mutated humans) messing stuff up. There’s also a great opportunity here for celebrities to cameo for a second or two before they get eaten.

My only stipulation is that Elijah Wood and Ed Harris both get eaten while naked. It’s a fantasy I have.

“The game centers on vacationers whose island paradise becomes a living hell when a zombie outbreak quickly spreads.  Cut off from the rest of the world, the survivors have only the available materials and the island’s natural ‘weapons’ to protect themselves from the vicious and growing legions of the undead. “

So it’s like Super Mario Sunshine, but with zombies. The movie will undoubtedly follow a similar line, and the filmmakers at Lionsgate promise to preserve that special Dead Island touch with a “focus on human emotion, family ties and non-linear storytelling.”  Also, lots and lots of undead gore.

The sad music, the narrative told in reverse, the slow motion, the solid direction, the heartstrings pulled – is it too late to put this in the Best Shorts category at the Oscars this year? Damn it, that was kind of a bummer, though. Why weren’t there any badass plants around to help that poor family? Video games have taught me that plants are the natural enemy of zombies, so if I were running Dead Island, I’d get some emergency gardeners in there pronto.

No plot details yet, so we can’t tell you who will be shooting colorful lines at Taylor Lautner. Or some other Taylor. Or Dennis Quaid at the very least. But I can tell you one thing. This movie is going to be really, really good. Matter of fact, I’m going to start working on having a child right now so that they may be born in time to see Missile Command in a theater. Because that’s the only real way to experience it. Now, I only need to find a host to carry my future Missile Command super-fan. Any takers, ladies? No. Serious? Wow. The first thing you’ll probably notice when you start watching is the ridiculous voice over, which is what I imagine Google Translate would sound like if the website came to life and started translating French into English for me. It also takes annoying commercial breaks. That being said, the editing is crisp, the camera angles are intriguing and there’s an actual story. So who says you can’t make a decent movie based on a video game. (/Film)

I don’t know what’s happening to our arthouse directors. Last week Aronofsky was linked to Wolverine 2 and now Sony has confirmed that director/Lily Tomlin enemy David O. Russell has been hired to write and direct an adaptation of the videogame "Uncharted: Drake‘s Fortune." So, you know, I’m all like, ‘Whhaaaaaatttttt????!!?????’

Originally, Kyle Ward was hired to write the script but lost the gig due to duties on Hitman 2. Then Sony went to Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, even though they wrote Sahara and A Sound Of Thunder. Somehow, the gig now belongs to O. Russell. I gues Paul Thomas Anderson (either one in this case) was unavailable.

This comes from a gossip site, so take it for what it’s worth, but Brad Pitt is supposedly in talks to star in a film adaptation of the groundbreaking videogame, Red Dead Redemption.

Published by Rockstar Games, the same company behind the Grand Theft Auto franchise, RDR tells the story of John Marston, a former outlaw who can’t escape his past during the final days of the Old West. Supposedly, Pitt has been given the right of first refusal for the Marston role.

Hopefully this rumor turns out to be true. Hollywood is already putting money behind crap like Battleship, so why not develop a film around Red Dead. The game has a solid plot and more interesting characters than half the films I’ve seen this year, so the heavy lifting is done. And if it works out, maybe someone will finally make a movie based on my favorite videogame of all time, Avoid the Noid. (Cinemablend)

If you loved playing Contra back in the day then you’re definitely going to dig this new arcade game based off the upcoming The Expendables. The music alone instantly transported me back to my wood-paneled basement and tube television.

You can play as Barney Ross, Lee Christmas or Yin Yang in full 8-bit glory. Beat the game as Yin Yang to unlock Bonus Mode for a chance to see alternate endings and easter eggs. Make it onto the Top 10 All-Time High Scores list for official Expendables swag from Lionsgate and Break. If you have some time to kill, kill some rebels using characters with limited mobility. Shooting up, down, forward, or diagonally is all you get, and it’s nostalgically awesome.

Back in college, we played so much Goldeneye that my friend instinctively ran off the basketball court during a big game because he noticed a blue backpack that resembled the game’s body armor in the bleachers.

Now, a new version of the game is making its way to the Wii and it looks amazing, and Daniel Craig-y. My college friends have all scattered, so I’ll need to round up three willing competitors. I think I’ll ask my building’s security guard. I bet he’s good with a gun, and at spying on people in the bathroom. There will definitely be a "No Oddjob" rule in effect. He always aims for the kneecaps and that’s just bullsh*t.

Video game movies are relatively cheap to make and they come with a built-in fanbase. Also, Milla Jovovich needs the work. I understand that logic. But there are some games that really do not deserve the Hollywood treatment yet they get picked up anyway. Missile Command is one. Asteroids is another. And now Space Invaders is joining the club. From the LA Times:

Warner Bros. is negotiating to acquire feature rights to the landmark shooter from Taito, the Japanese company that originally manufactured the game. If the rights issues all work out, the project would bring on Hollywood fixtures Mark Gordon, Jason Blum and Guymon Casady as producers.

I’m excited for the day when I don’t have to be negative about movie news. A day when the ideas that are presented are original, cool film ideas. But that day is not today. I’m not saying that I’m immune to making bad decisions. For instance, me creating a ketchup and Honeycomb cereal sandwich didn’t turn out so well. But I learned a valuable lesson.
