And it's a fictional sitcom. So it's really not like 'Jeopardy' at all, I guess.

Anyone who’s ever had the privilege of participating in a pub quiz knows the fun that can be had when friends, booze, and cheerful competition meld together. So naturally, NBC wants to bottle that magic and sell it to couch potatoes in sitcom form.

From Chris Moynihan, who helped bing us Veep, comes an untitled show about a group of friends who get together every week for a pub quiz. What else do we know? Well, THR tells us that the group of characters in question are millennials, and…that’s it! Sounds amazing, doesn’t it?

Eh, Friends and The League were based around similarly thin premises, and they turned out okay, so let’s believe that a guy involved with Veep knows what he’s doing.

Besides, if they make a show about it, that means we can sort of experience it for ourselves just by laying around on our couch. Now if only they made a show about losing weight…

See below for a LOT of nominees. And while it’s both fashionable and fun to rag on the awards shows for being out of touch, seeing just the nominees for the first category should shut up the doubters nicely. Louie? Orange is the New Black? Silicon Valley? Veep? Sure, they still have dinosaurs like Big Bang and Modern Family up there, but you’ve got our attention, Emmys. But can you be as judicious with the winners?

HBO Is Killing It With Their Sunday Night Lineup Right Now http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/hbo-is-killing-it-with-their-sunday-night-lineup-right-now/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/hbo-is-killing-it-with-their-sunday-night-lineup-right-now/#comments Tue, 06 May 2014 15:42:57 +0000 Penn Collins http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=261471 Sunday night belongs to HBO. Not legally, of course. But figuratively.

While it’s no surprise that HBO has rolled out some pretty strong television in Veep, Silicon Valley, and, of course, Game of Thrones, it seems that the lineup is translating into some of the best ratings the network has ever seen for its original series.

Game of Thrones is up about 25% from where it was last year, Veep is up 17% over last year, and Silicon Valley, which doesn’t have a previous season to compare against, has carried about 5.4 million viewers per episode, which…sounds like a lot.

While these numbers are impressive, the fact they’re on a network that requires not only cable service, but an additional premium subscription that costs more than Netflix makes them downright gaudy.

Of course, this is arguably the best face that HBO can put forward, considering that their drama lineup is pretty weak these days outside Game of Thrones. But enough about that. Let’s stay positive and just be happy that some good television is experiencing success. Hopefully at the expense of some singing competition or something.

HBO, once considered a bastion of televised drama, has recently been flexing some comedic muscle as many of its dramatic series near the end of their runs. So it should come as no surprise that when Silicon Valley came along to fill the Hello Ladies-shaped hole in our hearts, HBO was looking for something built to last.

And after positive reviews and good word of mouth, Silicon Valley is coming back after its third episode aired last night. Additionally, we get more Veep, which means we can all kick back with a glass of wine and watch politicos berate Jonah in thousands of different ways.

All in all, a great day for fans of comedy and HBO, but a bad day for Jonah.

We’ve got some pretty clear takeaways from this season 3 trailer for HBO’s Veep starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Her character, Vice President Selina Meyer, is running for president. And she’s meeting with Office Space‘s Diedrich Bader on how to proceed with her staff. And it looks like no one is safe from getting fired.

Judging from just this quick trailer, it seems as though the show might be continuing last year’s trajectory of becoming a more plot-driven show. That makes sense, because, as with Hello Ladies and Curb Your Enthusiasm, it’s hard to sustain a show that seemingly hits reset every week to begin anew with terrible, albeit funny, characters.

It’s like West Wing, but these people are completely different types of jerks.

After pulling down series high numbers possibly due to audience enlightenment (somewhat likely) and/or that sick Game of Thrones lead-in (extremely likely), Veep has gotten the ole’ renewal from HBO, affording us another season with Selena and her political gang that can’t shoot straight.

May I editorialize?

Thank you.

Veep is perhaps the funniest half-hour of TV on…TV. You know how people like funny shows that offer up a lot of heart as well? Those people didn’t like this show because this show hadn’t shown any heart. Until the last episode which offered an ending that leads the audience to believe that Selina Meyer MIGHT care about the decisions she makes, and her political career isn’t just one giant game.

While the show serves as a pretty bleak vantage point of contemporary politics, it doesn’t have to. You CAN just like the show because it’s a bunch of inept, weird people cursing at each other and their fun idiosyncrasies.

I promise no more editorializing for ten days, at least.

In a startling and violent move against the dreaded Seinfeld Curse, “Seinfeld” alum Julia Louis-Dreyfus is becoming the Vice President of the United States for HBO in the comedy series “Veep.” Dreyfus is playing former United States Senator Selina Meyer, who after becoming Vice President realizes the job is a lot wackier than she was expecting. Joining her in this Great American Experiment are Anna Chlumsky as her Chief of Staff, and Buster Bluth himself, Tony Hale, as her “right-hand man.” Reid Scott, Tim Simons and Matt Walsh are also in the cast. It’s set to premiere in the election year of 2012

That’s quite a cast, and I have to admit I’m pretty optimistic about it, but come on- will America really ever be ready for a Vice President who isn’t a white male? This is clearly just another liberal fantasy from HBO. (Deadline)
