Gangs of New York

This extremely violent Martin Scorsese film focuses on 19th century Irish immigration set against the backdrop of the 1863 New York City Draft Riots. As nativist and immigrant gangs fight for control of the city’s Five Points slum, political forces beyond their control come to a head. And by “come to a head,” I mean mobs of marauding rioters outraged over the recently enacted draft bring the city to its knees. While the incident might have made for one of the darker chapters in U.S. history, it also made for one hell of a movie.
