I’d like to think that the headline says it all, but for the purposes of pretending to be a journalist, I’ll go into some more depth here. Anne Rice has written 13 vampire books, called The Vampire Chronicles. Universal will be turning them all into films with the help of Ron Howard and Brian Grazer.

Their involvement can only be explained by the fact that they themselves are vampires. Which would also explain Grazer’s hair.

This questionable decision can be attributed in equal parts to a) Universal still thinking the public wants vampires, and b) Universal, really really really wanting franchises. I mean, they’re already doing a classic monster anthology. This is really gilding the lily.

As we’ve seen with the crazy box office business drummed up by The Avengers and it’s many spinoffs, the big idea these days is to assemble a group of characters, release some films with all of them, then release some individual films, then become REALLY rich.

We see DC Comics beginning to do it with Justice League, featuring Batman, Aquaman, and all the other men, and Marvel’s even doing it again with Spider-Man and his weird group of friends.

However, Universal doesn’t want to limit the opportunity to just comic book characters, as it’s supposedly assembling all it’s classic monster characters from it’s really old movies, like Van Helsing, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, and all those other people you grandfather won’t stop talking about. The premise kicks off in 2016 with a new Mummy film that presumably won’t have Brendan Fraser in it, but who knows?

Having not properly weighed the long-term costs of buying a zoo, Matt Damon is in need of some serious cash and he’ll earn it the best way he knows how — running around Prague and breaking bad guy necks. It’s reported that Damon is in talks to return to the Bourne franchise even though Jeremy Renner did a surprisingly good job keeping his seat warm.

If Damon does return, he won’t do so without director Paul Greengrass, evoking the code of Bros Before Shows. By the tenets of Hollywood Wingman Law, Universal is obligated to also enter talks with Greengrass.

This doesn’t mean that Renner is left out in the cold as his character has already been promised a sequel, “with potential crossover/merger of the characters’ stories to be sorted out if and when Damon signs back up.” What this tells me is that they’re thinking of the fans and genuinely care. At least enough so to grant them the passing of the baton that the Teen Wolf franchise never received. (Twitch)

The post Now It’s Time For Arnold Schwarzenegger To Reboot ‘Conan’ appeared first on Screen Junkies.

Between the memoir and ill-advised movie sequels, Arnold Schwarzenegger is mining his past for every dollar he can pump out of it. In the spirit, he’s throwing another ill-advised sequel into the mix. In spring of 2011, the Jason Momoa-starring Conan reboot failed to relaunch the series which leaves the door open for another reboot. This time starring the O.G. Conan, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The 65-year old will star in Legend of Conan. It’s planned as a direct sequel to the 1982 original and will ignore the sequels, but not the fact that Conan is totally an old guy now. “This movie picks up Conan where Arnold is now in his life, and we will be able to use the fact that he has aged in this story. I love the property of Conan so much that I wouldn’t touch it unless we came up with something worthy. We think this is a worthy successor to the original film. Think of this as Conan’s Unforgiven,” producer and possible screenwriter on the movie Chris Morgan (47 Ronin, Wanted) told Deadline.

Momoa will have no connection to the film, and it’s unknown what the plot specifics will be. Also no word if Arnold will pass the mantle over to a son for sequels. Or to a secret son birthed with the wench hired to sweep his hut. There’s just so many places this plot can go.

Don’t act so surprised. Did you really think they wouldn’t remake Scarface? After sending a draft through Training Day scribe David Ayer, the torch has been passed to Paul Attanasio, who has done some bang-up work with Donnie Brasco and Quiz Show.

Of course, none of this has to do with the fact that this film needn’t be made. While not the original, the 1983 take stands up pretty damn well, save for maybe the electronic synth-nightmare score. But it’s a product of its time, and it’s a lot easier to imagine a Cuban deportee doing that then than it is anyone doing it now.

Though I WOULD like to see Tom Cruise give it a shake.

Producer Alex Kurtzman explained his desire to work with the director, “I remember seeing Underworld and finding it a beautiful advancement of the genre. It was presented in this fresh, incredibly cool concept, but it never gave up its reverence for the mythology and that is what inspired us to meet with Len.”

“We’re reaching into the deep roots of The Mummy, which at its beating heart is a horror movie and then an action movie, and putting it into a context that is real and emotional.”

“Also, we thought it would be cool to see Channing Tatum and Kate Beckinsale do parkour on a pyramid. So, yeah.” (Deadline)

After selling 20 million copies and convincing housewives and receptionists the nation over that spanking is soooooooo sexy, 50 Shades of Grey is now getting the film treatment, unsurprisingly, as Universal puts some producers on point. Mike DeLuca and Dana Brunetti, who served the same role on David Fincher‘s The Social Network, will now be telling the story of Christian Grey, a billionaire who fucks a journalist. Why this is worthy of a book or film is beyond me. I’m guessing journalists get fucked all the time, but I wouldn’t know because I’m just a “blogger.”

Next steps for the project include finding a screenwriter and a director. No timeline has been expressly stated, but I would look to something in late 2013 at the absolute earliest. Plenty of names have been bandied about as possible directors, but they’re too stupid to mention here.

Okay. One.

In news that is at the same time both heartening and disheartening, Universal just paid an “enormous, multi-million dollar penalty” to get out of producing a whole grip of films based on Hasbro properties.

In 2008, the studio signed a contract with Hasbro to develop films based on Clue, Stretch Armstrong, Battleship, Candy Land, and a few others. Only Battleship was made by Universal, as Relativity picked up Stretch, and Sony is inflicting an Adam Sandler Candy Land on us.

It’s nice to see that Universal is actually saying “no” to licensing established brands as films, but it’s a pity, because that money could have been used to finance a good movie, rather than not financing bad ones.

The bitch of it is that these crappy movies are still getting made through other studios. There is no upside here, other than the small solace we get from knowing that one studio rejected some cheap projects that others were quick to jump on. Small victory? (CinemaBlend)

Woody Woodpecker is no longer relegated to Thanksgiving parades. The psychotic cartoon bird is headed to the big screen courtesy of Universal. The studio is now in talks with Blades Of Glory co-writers John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky to develop the story.

Illumination, the animation house behind Despicable Me and The Lorax, will be responsible for bringing Woody back to life (heh, heh), which is great news. In an age where so many cartoon classics are given the live-action/CGI treatment, it’s refreshing to see an interest in creating straight up cartoons. However, this is just conjecture. It could easily become a live-action/CGI blend with an Andy Samberg-voiced woodpecker chasing master jewel thief Heather Graham. It’s just how these things sometimes go. (THR)

McG‘s dreams of somehow turning Ouija into a movie have been dashed. Universal seems to have cooled on the idea of needlessly adapting board games after dropping $2 million on Battleship. Since inking the deal with Hasbro to adapt six of their properties, the studio has dropped plans to adapt “Monopoly,” “Magic: The Gathering,” “Clue,” and have opted to pay the $5 million penalty to not move forward with Ouija. They clearly don’t want to play anymore.

McG is shopping the film around town in the hopes that another studio might pick it up. Paramount, who have had hits with G.I. Joe and Transformers, have already passed. I think it’s best that McG use this film to contact itself. It seems dead. (Vulture)

Universal, deciding they can ignore the cries of the masses no more, is about to close on a pitch that would team hearthrob Zac Efron up with, uh, everyman Seth Rogen for an untitled R-rated comedy that Deadline claims has “the tone of Old School.” Hmm. Interesting.

The plot is as follows:

Rogen plays a regular guy who lives near an alpha male fraternity house. Efron is a member of the fraternity, whose raucous behavior wreaks havoc on the other guy’s family life.

Of course, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will serve as producers of the project, which was scripted by Andrew Cohen and Brendan O’Brien. It’s thought that Rogen will be making a cool $8 million for this project, which seems like an awful lot of money to act like yourself, but I’m just a writer.

It’s nice to see Efron bust out of the pretty-boy mold with both this and The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman. Maybe this hope for this guy yet.

It looks like the plan is to create a cheap direct-to-DVD film in the hopes that they take off and lead to a string of more Werewolf films that people can accidentally rent while drunk. What are you doing for Memorial Day? Not this past one, or the next one, but the one after that? Judging be the box office take of the most recent Fast Five, there’s a good chance you’ll be in or near a theater on Ma 24, 2013, when the crew comes back to race cars and shoot guns in some sort of context for Fast & Furious 6.

The entire crew will be back in force for the third installment of the new “trilogy” that has been overseen by no less than Vin Diesel himself in a producer capacity.

The good news is that after you enjoy chases between hover-cars or whatever the hell else exists in the distant future of 2013, you will have a full month to pick your jaw up off the floor for Ryan Reynolds and Jeff BridgesR.I.P.D., which will hit theaters June 28, 2013.

It works out really well because you’ll be able to take Mom to a Fast & Furious 6 as a late Mother’s Day present, then Dad to R.I.P.D. Thanks, Universal, for making my 2013 shopping so easy.

Universal is in talks with the writer/director to develop a new spy film franchise based off the Gabriel Allon novels by Daniel Silva. The character Allon is an ex-Mossad agent who avenged the murder of Israeli athletes during the Munich Olympics. The story picks up ten years later when an old enemy pulls the retired Allon back in. There’s a good chance that Haggis would direct this film as well if he can work it into his busy schedule of thinking about racism and how it’s bad and stuff. (LA Times)

Warren Beatty, having not stepped behind the camera since Bulworth 13 years ago, is committed to stepping back behind the camera for Paramount for an untitled comedy. And…that’s what we know. Unfortunately, no plot or even theme details have been made available, so right now you should just hang your hopes on the fact that Warren Beatty is going to be both starring in and directing the project, so allow some mild enthusiasm for that fact alone.

Of course, there is no casting info and the only timeline info divulges that the film will begin photography this fall. It’s hard to speculate as to what actors would fit the roles, since we have zero ideas what those roles are. However, Paramount was nice enough to drop this little gem of a quote to offer up no more clarity, “Warren’s script is quintessential Beatty, elegantly written and wonderfully entertaining.”

The script will also be an infamous womanizer.

Rejecting the presumption that these sorts of movies write themselves, Universal Studios and director McG have decided that the current iteration of the Ouija script will need some polishing. What they have now isn’t quite up to the standards that are set for films based on board games found at your weird aunt’s house, so Mr. and Mrs. Smith writer Simon Kinberg will be working his magic on the first draft from Tron Legacy scribes Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz.

The film is being positioned as a family adventure, which makes me unable to shake the comparisons to Jumanji, another movie predicated on a board game (albeit a fictional one) that tossed obstacles only tangentially related to each other at some kids until it decided to stop.

Or it could follow in the footsteps of Clue and simply defy all movie conventions with a cast of aging cult stars. But something tells me it’s gonna be like Jumanji.

Ben Affleck‘s transformation into Rob Reiner is nearly complete. The actor-cum-director is currently at the helm of Argo and now has his next project lined up for him. Warner Bros and Universal Pictures have optioned the rights to the Alex Coben mystery novel, Tell No One. The plot is centered around a pediatrician whose wife goes missing. When he goes to find her, he is severely beaten. He awakes to discover his wife has been murdered and he is the top suspect. When it’s later ruled that she was the victim of a serial killer he is let off the hook. Years later, after the capture of the killer, bodies begin to turn up in the same fashion which puts the pediatrician back under suspicion. Then he receives evidence that his wife may still be alive.

This isn’t the first time that Hollywood has taken a stab at the material. It was once set up at Sony Pictures with Star Trek’s Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci on scripting duties. When they couldn’t figure out how to make the plot make any damn sense, it was scrapped. Then, it was successfully put on the screen in France and that’s what brought it to the attention of Affleck. Which is all well and good, but what I’d really like to see is a French version of Star Trek. (Deadline)

First Snow White and the Huntsman couldn’t get their hands on a huntsman. Now, they’re looking for a new script.

In its heated rivalry with Relativity to get its Snow White project out first, Universal has hired Hossein Amini to rewrite the Snow White and the Huntsman script. Amini, best known for writing Nicolas Winding Refn‘s Drive and Keanu Reevessamurai actioner 47 Ronin, will add more exciting sword fights to the most recent draft by Evan Spiliotopoulos. Dude fighting on tree branches and swinging from long, ornate curtains, I assume.

These fights should mirror the back and forth between Universal and Relativity who are frantically trying to one-up one another in an effort to get their film in theaters first, and poison the public’s perception of big budget Snow White films like so many apples. (Deadline)

Those of you who fear that reboots have violently ravaged theaters like a pack of – oh, I don’t know, let’s just say “wolves” – may want to run and hide from the following news.

See The Trailer For Danny Boyle's Stage 'Frankenstein'

So, in 2010, Joe Johnston directed that toothless remake of The Wolf Man called The Wolfman starring Benicio Del Toro. Critics formed an angry mob, chasing it out of town, and an underwhelming box office performance was the silver bullet in the film’s chest. Or so we thought.

You see, the property is really important to Universal, who wants to launch a series of films based around their classic monsters, so they’re going to reboot the franchise and go in a different direction. They’re even considering calling the film Werewolf. So Werewolf would be a reboot of The Wolfman, which was a remake of The Wolf Man. And who says Hollywood is out of ideas?

Screenwriter Michael Tabb’s Wolfman 2 script is apparently being re-written as a standalone feature, which will lean closer creatively to the 1941 Lon Chaney version rather than the most recent take. (Moviehole)

Now that Doug Liman has been granted permission to travel to the moon, he’s searching for A-list actors to join him.

Paramount has fast-tracked and financed Doug Liman’s Luna, the story of some rogue scientists who build a makeshift rocket to retrieve an energy source located on the moon. The project has been in the works for years, but couldn’t find financing until now courtesy of Skydance and New Regency. Liman and Jon Hamburg wrote the original draft of the script, though it’s been reworked several times since then. The project is now poised to be Liman’s next, so the question of casting has quickly become a priority.

The shortlist of male leads includes Bradley Cooper, Andrew Garfield, Emile Hirsch and Chris Pine, all of whom have starred in blockbusters. (I’m considering Speed Racer a blockbuster for the sake of Hirsch’s feelings.) No talks are underway, but expect that list to get culled quickly. As for the fairer sex, producers are looking to Rosario Dawson, Megan Fox, Rachel McAdams, Eva Mendes, Zoe Saldana and Olivia Wilde. So they’re going with “young hot women.” Interesting approach.

Glickert, a PA on Transformers and Iron Man, and director Justin Lin‘s former assistant, sold a science fiction movie pitch to Universal. From robot fluffer to sci-fi super-player. He’s attached to direct and produce the film, with Lin and Scott Stuber set to co-produce. Universal is looking for a writer to pen the screenplay. Though plot details are being kept under-wraps, the word is that it’s similar in tone to Heat and the Bourne movies. Here’s what Lin has to say:

“Taking a step back, as a viewer, the tone and the gritty approach to the sci-fi genr taken here is something that hasn’t been seen in a while.”

Tom Cruise has officially signed on for Universal’s Oblivion, to be helmed by Tron: Legacy‘s Joseph Kosinski. The actor has been light biking around the $100 adaptation of the popular graphic novel, ever since the project jumped spaceship from Disney to Universal. (The project couldn’t be made family-friendly enough for the House of Herbie the Love Bug.) Now the deal is closed, and the ancient prophecy was proven correct.

Cruise will play a soldier in this post-apocalyptic world where the Earth’s surface becomes toxic, forcing humans to live in the sky. The soldier is stuck on the planet, repairing robots and shooting stuff, until along comes a beautiful girl to change his outlook on everything. So… WALL-E? A live action version of WALL-E? Anybody wanna buy a gigantic, cross-platform adaptation of Stephen King‘s Dark Tower? I know a bunch of guys looking to sell.

Reportedly, Universal is worried about the ridiculous scope of their upcoming Dark Tower series, which will be told in three epic blockbuster movies and an epic, blockbuster TV series. (Unless the series airs on NBC as planned, but the budget would still be big.) Director/Producer Ron Howard must have been like, “so you have enough money for this, right?” To which Universal quickly responded, “sure, sure,” but the studio just looked its wallet and realized it doesn’t have that kind of cash on them, and they have a bunch of bills to pay this month… So Universal is apparently thinking about either finding a partner studio or selling the behemoth off entirely.

Casting is still in progress, though Javier Bardem is set to play Roland Deschain for the next 15-25 years or so. The books will be adapted by writer Akiva Goldsman. (Variety)

After the phenomenal success of Scream 4, I’m sure you’re all excited to see another best-in-the-90′s franchise return to the box office. Here’s the info on American Reunion‘s release date, so you know when to avoid the latest American Pie movie. No, this one’s not going straight to DVD.

Stiffler, band camps and pie sexing will all be back in theaters April 6, 2012. The first three were Summer releases, which makes me wonder if Universal thinks this pie will be tasty enough for blockbusterdom. However, on a high note (that’s gonna be a pun – wait for it), the film is being written and directed by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg of “Harold and Kumar” fame. (Note the word “high” earlier.)

The cast include a veritable who’s-who of actors who have nothing better going on, including Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, Chris Klein, and American Pie All-Star Check Collector Eugene Levy. Other Pie alums are playing hard-to-get, but will almost certainly acquiesce, like Tara Reid and Mena Suvari. (TheWrap)

I can’t I am so high right now.

The Savages is about two California potheads (Aaron Johnson and Taylor Kitsch), whose communal girl-pool Ophelia (Lively) gets kidnapped by a badass Mexican drug cartel, forcing the two top dealers to work for them. However, the mighty vortex stopped when it found the actor they wanted: Oscar Nominee Jeremy Renner. Every other actor in Hollywood, thanks for coming. You’re all winners, except not really. Only Renner is the winner.

Renner (The Town, The Hurt Locker) will play a character who’s not Jason Bourne in the forth film, which is titled Bourne Legacy. I wonder if further sequels will also have to wedge “Bourne” in the name for continuity purposes, like Bourne’s Shadow, The Bourne Similarity, and Basically Bourne, You Guys. Interestingly, Renner also plays a spy in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, so that begs the question: which studio is Renner really working for? Spooked by the prospect of being best known for writing direct-to-DVD Disney masterpieces like The Lion King 1 1/2 and Pooh‘s Heffalump Halloween Movie, writer Evan Spiliotopoulos ha taken a high-profile gig scripting Ouiji for Universal. A movie based on a board game? Likely to be bad. A movie based on a board game directed by McG? Spiliotopoulos will probably beg Disney to let him write Mulan 4: Space Mulan after he’s done with Ouija.

Michael Bay and Hasbro execs are producing Ouija, and I assume top-quality storytelling is at the top of their to-do list. Plot details are still murky, though it’s been described as “a four-quadrant supernatural adventure centering around a family.” If there’s one thing movie-goers care about, it’s marketing quadrants. Ghosts care about them too. It’s why when Universal executives were considering the project, they asked the ghosts of film legends past via Ouija board, “does this movie hit all four quadrants?” The ghosts spelled out, “S-T-O-P… R-U-I-N-I-N-G… M-O-V-I-E-S…” (Hollywood Reporter)
