In an incredibly convoluted series of events, Shyamalan turned the story that would have been his sequel to 2000′s Unbreakable, the last Shyamalan film that stood up to any critical scrutiny, into the third episode of his Night Chronicles series instead. It’s uncertain how far Shyamalan went down development of the story before realizing that he could repurpose his idea for an Unbreakable sequel (by changing the villain) and turn the story into a “standalone” film. Strange that he chose the word “standalone” to describe the story that will be the third entry in his newest series of movies, but no one has understood Shyamalan’s thought process in years, so…whatever.

Surprised that Shyamalan was developing a series of stories? Yeah, we all were. Not content with disappointing fans one story at a time, Shyamalan has decided to produce his next films in a more efficiently disappointing serial fashion, having begun with Devil, his last release which he wrote and produced, but didn’t direct.

In short, M. Night took his expansion of his last good plot and decided to retool it. He reassures (threatens?) us that an Unbreakable sequel is in the pipeline, but his original idea for the film is now going to be something else entirely, so he’s back to square one as far as ideas for the sequel go. This will come as devastating news to Shyamalan’s remaining fans. More specifically, his mom and his nephew. (MTV)
