Evil has been kicking around the festival scene and thanks to Comic-Con, it’s now on many more radars. As far as horror send-ups go, it’s got a pretty awesome premise. Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine star as two innocent hillbillies fixing up their cabin in the woods. A carload of college kids mistakes them for creepy killers, and through a series of misunderstandings, end up killing themselves while incriminating Tucker and Dale along the way.

That is why I never go into the woods. It’s too dangerous. That and the raccoons with their creepy little hands and what are they planning anyway???

The performances make this a fun, gory horror flick.

To be fair, this movie has been hyped to me for over a year before I finally saw it. If I had seen it at SXSW 2010 it would have been a delightful midnight movie. I think it’s good for what it is, but not great, and we have seen great from this genre.

Tucker (Alan Tudyk) and Dale (Tyler Labine) are innocent woodsmen fixing up their cabin in the woods. A carload of college kids mistakes them for creepy killers, and through a series of misunderstandings, end up killing themselves while incriminating Tucker and Dale along the way.

That hook is brilliant: two innocent doofuses (doofi?) trying to help and inadvertently causing gory deaths in the gory horror tradition. Indeed, Tucker’s chainsaw incident is a work of art, making it look like a slasher chase thanks to Tudyk’s totally sincere performance.

9 photosGet To Know Katrina Bowden

Unfortunately, many of the subsequent accidents are familiar from other movies. Even some of the obvious ones are still joyfully excessive, although one blatantly totally foreshadowed early in the film. The gunshot death is especially cliché. The Coen Bros., Soderbergh and I’m sure Tarantino did that one at some point too.

The college kids do all the clichés from the horror movies with cell phone signals, splitting up and saying, “Don’t go in there.” That’s funny, and they’re all pretty much A-holes anyway. Chad (Jesse Moss) is the D-bag leader but they’re all pretty easy to hate. I thought screaming Chloe (Chelan Simmons) was adorable, in the gore fodder way she’s supposed to be.

Director Eli Craig shoots the film well. It looks like a professional movie except that Hollywood would never allow this kind of gore. He throws us some nighttime skinny dipping nakedness, although Allison (Katrina Bowden) only gets down to her undies of course.

Once Chad confronts Tucker and Dale, Allison has to keep her dialogue especially vague to maintain the misunderstanding. She tries to tell him that Tucker and Dale are her friends, but she never quite says, “They didn’t kidnap me. I almost drowned and they pulled me up to safety.” That would undo the whole story.

The film is mainly entertaining because Tudyk and Labine are so damn likeable, and Bowden plays a total sweetheart too. As festival movies go, it’s no Hobo with a Shotgun Rubber or Detention, but it’s in the same family.

Tyler Labine says the monkeys will get you all farklempt.

Tyler Labine plays a character named Franklin in Rise of the Apes, the prequel to both the five part classic Planet of the Apes series and the memorably confusing 2001 reboot. Labine was at the Television Critics Association press tour to promote his new sitcom, “Mad Love,” so I went up to him after for some Apes scoop. He had a surprising perspective on the movie.

“It’s touching,” Labine said. “We have Andy Serkis at the helm. Basically the leading character is Cesar the Ape and he’s such a pioneer of motion capture craft and had people crying behind the monitors without saying a word, he’s so great. John Lithgow plays a very touching character in there and there’s a lot of humanity to juxtapose what’s about to happen. I think we need to see how humane we are in the beginning, in the prequel, so that there’s a bit of a rivalry between the humans and the apes by the time we get to Planet of the Apes.”

Franklin is a primatologist studying the apes when Cesar evolves into a speaking, emoting rebel leader. He’s a loving sympathizer for the apes too.

“I was kind of playing a bit of an ape myself, a guy who just loves apes, did all the schooling and everything but he’s sort of become like the bleeding heart of the clinic. He was a big sort of teddy bear who is thrust into these really heavy decisions early on in the movie that directly affect the outcome of what come to be with the apes. It was nice. There were some real dramatic turns in there and it also didn’t rely on just me being a smartass which I really liked.”

Of course, no real apes were harmed making the movie. Nor were they even employed. It was all Weta guys in motion capture suits. “Because I’m the primatologist of the clinic that the story is originating from, I did a lot of scenes talking with apes and carrying apes and doing surgery on apes and a couple big fight scenes with apes.”

Rise of the Apes is coming Jun 24.
