There’s been a LOT of buzz over True Detective casting the past few months, and now that we’ve got two of the stars down in Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell, it’s only appropriate that someone cobbled together a fake trailer out of existing footage.

Someone did. And it’s terrific. In fact, I give it my highest rating ever. Six thumbs up.

If we could get Elizabeth Moss signed on for some Peggy moments in here, that would just up the comedy value. Until the other two leads get announced, maybe we just have big bouncing question marks in half the video. That wouldn’t be annoying.

Like sands through the hourglass, so are the casting rumors behind HBO’s True Detective. This week gave us both Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn confirmations, but has left us wanting for knowledge about the other two leads, one male, one female, according to lore. And us.

However, from God’s mouth to our ears (via Variety, of course) comes word that the producers really just want Rachel McAdams. Note that McAdams worked with Vince Vaughn in Wedding Crashers, but I think we all hope to Christ that wasn’t a consideration for casting her over Elisabeth Moss and the rest of the women in the world.

No confirmation yet, but I’m guessing what True Detective wants, True Detective gets.

Meanwhile, Taylor Kitsch waits on the floor, calling AT&T to ensure that his bill is paid and that he’s able to receive incoming calls.

Here he is, doing his best flat circle impression. It’s not bad, really. PRODUCERS, TAKE NOTE!

After news this weekend that, yes, Colin Farrell is going to star in the next season of True Detective, just like was reported months ago, word comes down from the mountaintop that Vince “Schlubmeister” Vaughn will be brushing Dorito crumbs off his shirt to star in the series as well.

2/3 of the prophecy has been fulfilled, and now we await word that the third person to be rumored to star, Taylor Kitsch, has signed on. We’re almost there! Just one left, guys!

Vaughn will be playing Frank Semyon, which is a good name, but no Rust Cohle. An inferior name will not prevent me from making “flat circle” jokes at EVERY. DAMN. TURN. so just bear with me for the duration of the run of the show, please.

In summary, still outstanding are the Kitsch announcement and breaking the news to the many women who are in contention for the female lead. It’s going to be a difficult decision, but only one actress will have the privilege of becoming a flat circle for the HBO drama.

Over the past six months, we’ve gotten a lot of rumors regarding casting choices for the sophomore season of True Detective, and not a lot of confirmation. We were initially told to look for Vince Vaughn, Taylor Kitsch, and Colin Farrell as the male leads, although only Farrell has confirmed.

We’ve also been advised that every woman in the world is being considered for the female lead. Ok. Not EVERY woman, but a lot of them.

In case you wanted to hear the words straight from the Irishman’s mouth, he said to Ireland‘s Sunday World, “I’m doing the second series. I’m so excited.” Pretty black-and-white.

Less clear is the fate of the other stars that had been mentioned. Farrell was mum on any other participation, so the jury is still out, though when one domino falls, the rest are sure to follow, especially given the amount of time they’ve had to put a deal together.

It seems to be the consensus that there will be four leads, so whenever Nic Pizzolatto wants to get around to announcing the other ones…that would be great.

Think you are on top of the True Detective season 2 casting news? THE F*CK YOU ARE! HBO decided to show you how little you know about what’s going on with True Detective‘s casting by throwing no less than seven new names into the mix for the female leads, according to The Wrap.

Thought that Mad Men‘s Elizabeth Moss was a sure thing? YOU DON’T KNOW SHIT. We’ve also got Rachel McAdams, who was mentioned earlier (didn’t pick up on that one, did ya, college boy?), Jessica Biel, Malin Akerman, Rosario Dawson, Brit Marling, Oona Chaplin, Jaimie Alexander, and Kelly Reilly. I only know who the first three are, but my curiosity is not enough to start Googling random actresses that only have an 11 or so percent chance of getting the part. I’m a busy man.

The broad characteristics of the actresses on this list lead us to believe that no one involved with the show has any idea what they’re doing, and they probably just highlighted these names in on a back issue of USWeekly they were thumbing through at the gynecologist’s office.

(The casting director is a woman in this scenario.)

Originally there were rumors that True Detective’s second season would feature two female leads. And then four leads. And now one of those leads could be Elisabeth Moss, who is indeed a female. And also an inspired choice.

She recently wrapped filming the final season of Mad Men, which would free her up to act all sulky and be puzzled by the occult on HBO. If the deal goes through, Moss will play Ani Bezzerides, a Monterey sheriff whose past troubles leave her wrestling with gambling and alcohol. She’s one of three cops investigating the brutal murder of a corrupt city manager whose body has been found along a stretch of highway with satanic symbols carved into his chest. Cases with satanic symbols are the most difficult to solve, as we learned in season one. If anyone’s up for the task, it’s the woman who figured out how to sell lipstick to other women. (The Wrap)

I’m guessing with the critical success of the first season of the crime anthology True Detective, a loooooong line of agents and publicists lobbied to get their fallen stars back on the A-list. I mean, first it was announced that Taylor Kitsch (not quite fallen, but hobbled by John Carter and Battleship) and Colin Farrell (lots of bad stuff) would be teaming up for the sophomore season.

Now…NOW word is that Vince Vaughn is circling a part in the show’s next outing on HBO. Vaughn hasn’t done anything approaching drama since Clay Pigeons and Psycho. That was 60 lbs. and like 15 schlubby roles ago. It’s time to get back on that horse, Vince.

There are currently no Wilson brothers cast to help him through this chore, but we’re guessing that will change, too. Can’t have Vince Vaughn without a Wilson brother.

The rumors that Colin Farrell and Taylor Kitsch have been cast as two of the four leads in the second season of True Detective have neither been confirmed or denied by the powers at HBO, but there are some new plot details that may be legitimate.

Film Divider has descriptions of the leads as well as the skeletons in their closets. It’s reported that the Farrell and Kitsch characters would team up with a female Monterey sheriff who is struggling with drinking and gambling problems. Farrell’s character has issues with cocaine and anger management (he’s a shoe-in) and the younger character is actually a member of the California Highway Patrol who has been suspended for sexually exploiting a young woman he pulled over.

The plot itself may include a dash of the occult but mainly centers around a corrupt transportation deal:

The new mystery is to be kickstarted by the murder of Ray Caspar, City Manager of a fictional Californian city. From what I can gather, the new, partly invented map that Pizzolatto is drawing will be essential to his new story. As he teased, some months ago, part of the mystery will involve California’s transportation systems. This plot will involve a corrupt scheme to link North and South California with a high speed train, all in pursuit of profitable land ownership and lucrative federal grants.

It’s also reported that the story will take place in the modern day. It remains to be seen how the time period will impact the character’s hairstyles.

While not much is known about the forthcoming second season of HBO’s breakout hit True Detective, creator Nick Pizzolatto has dropped a few bombs of truth on fans. For one, there will be three completely new leads, lest you thought Harrelson and McConaughey would reprise their roles.

Those leads have not been cast yet, but there are plenty of suggestions out there. Pizzolatto said casting will begin “in earnest” in a few weeks.

Secondly, the show is moving to a totally new eerie setting in California. But not LA or San Fran. NOT EVEN ORANGE COUNTY. It’s going to take place in lesser-known (read: creepier) areas of CA, hopefully replicating the quiet discomfort that we were able to get from Louisiana last season.

And that’s pretty much all that’s known at this point. Let’s take a breath so we can get all fired up when they announce the leads.

The post The 6 Best Streaming Series To Binge Watch This Weekend appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>
Yes, by now we’ve all completed our binge watching of House of Cards, which means that most of us are going through streaming series withdrawals—whether we’ll admit it or not. Well, luckily TV has gotten so good in the past few years that there’s no shortage of excellent shows available for streaming, and no shame in spending your weekend doing nothing but watching one (or more) of them. But before you get trapped in the maze of never-ending browsing searching for your next fix, we’ve complied a list of must-see streaming series, just in time for the weekend.

1. Peep Show on Netflix: A sort of modern, British Odd Couple, Peep Show chronicles the failings of roommates Mark and Jez in alternating first-person POV, complete with inner monologues that reveal what they are really thinking in every situation—in all its judgmental, pathetic depravity. And it’s completely hilarious. There are a total of eight seasons (six episodes each) following these lovable losers as they stumble from awkward situation to awkward situation, ultimately revealing that it’s they who are really their own worst enemies.

Agent Dale Cooper and Laura Palmer in the red room

2. Twin Peaks on Netflix: Weird, quirky and totally original, David Lynch’s slice of alternate reality in the Pacific Northwest holds up just as well today as it did when it first aired (on network TV no-less) in the early ’90s. Who killed Laura Palmer is the initial question that FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle McLachlan) is called in to investigate, but it’s all the bizarre, colorful characters that inhabit this middle-of-nowhere logging town that are the real mystery he, and all of us, get sucked into. If you’re not already a Lynch fan, Twin Peaks just may convert you.

3. Broadchurch on Amazon and iTunes: This moody British drama follows local detectives Alec Hardy (David Tennant) and Ellie Miller (Olivia Coleman in a departure from her usual comedic roles e.g. Peep Show) as they investigate the murder of a local boy in the sleepy, ordinarily murder-free, coastal town of Broadchurch. It may sound like a typical whodunnit, but there’s something about this little world and its conflicted and very human characters that sets it apart. Incidentally, it’s currently being remade for American audiences as Gracepoint—David Tennant will be reprising his role starring opposite Anna Gunn. If you liked the The Killing, this is a must-see.

4. Orange Is The New Black on Netflix: With the new season of Netflix’s original series Orange is the New Black right around the corner, now is the perfect time to catch up (or refresh) on season one, and all of Piper Chapman’s fish-out-of-water mishaps in prison. Now, fellas, before you dismiss this and pigeon hole it “for chicks,” the smart writing and hilarious situations (sprinkled with some appropriate drama here and there) is totally unisex and thoroughly enjoyable. Oh, and did we mention it’s full of hot, graphic lesbian sex? It’s women’s prison after all!

5. Honest Trailers on Break.com’s Roku App: Shameless self-promotion here—you can now watch not one, not two, but all of the Honest Trailers we’ve ever made, streaming on your Roku. If you’ve never seen Honest Trailers a) who ARE you? b) you’ve been missing out and c) you can now make up for it all in one sitting. A recent update to Break.com’s App organizes all the Honest Trailers in one tidy place, so you can stream until it hurts…from laughing.

Matthew McConaughey in True Detective with sketchbook

6.True Detective on HBO GO: If you didn’t give it a chance while it was on (granted, only a few weeks ago marked the first season’s finale), then you really, really should. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson give outstanding performances as Louisiana-based detectives tracking down a ritualistic serial killer in the backwoods of the bayou. A word of advice going in—don’t get too caught up in the idea of lofty conspiracies and major shakedowns, the beauty of this show is really the writing, the characters, and their individual experiences with the horrors of humanity, and their own troubled lives—internally and externally. It’s Southern Gothic, neo-noir at its finest.

If you’re a fan of True Detective and either had an HBO Go account or were using a friend’s password, YOU WERE PART OF THE PROBLEM LAST NIGHT. That problem was: HBO Go was crashing, freezing, and buffering thanks to lots and lots of traffic.

As streaming video services become the norm, rather than a novelty, this seems to be happening more and more. In fact, Netflix experienced a similar problem during House of Cards‘ first week, and now they’ve signed a deal with the devil (Comcast) to get more bandwidth so it doesn’t happen again.

Will HBO do the same thing to make sure that we as subscribers, or password misappropriators, never have to do wait again? Who knows. Maybe. Probably? No?

However, it does mean that True Detective was a pretty big hit for such a niche premise. We can’t wait to see next season with Tom Cruise and Jonathan Lipnicki.

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have teamed up, surprisingly not to raise hemp awareness (it’s a versatile material!), but instead to have a drawl-off in the upcoming HBO series True Detective. They star as two detectives — Harrelson is the family man and McConaughey is the tortured one who sleeps naked and leans back in chairs — tracking a serial killer across Louisiana over the span of seventeen years.

I don’t want to spoil the series for those who haven’t read the book, but prepared to be disappointed to find out the killer is actually a really methodical alligator.
