Even if you were underwhelmed by the new Tron: Legacy, the execs at Disney weren’t. The film about computer programs who look like humans, but aren’t really humans, but can leap into our world and become human, and that would be bad or something, made serious bank at the box office. Worldwide totals are close to $300 million worldwide.

So according to Ain’t It Cool News, Disney is very close to firing up the ol’ Sequelomatic 5000 to copy-paste out another mediocre entry in the Tron series. Meanwhile, there’s also a Tron TV show “in the works.” There will also probably be a Disneyland rollercoaster where you’re one of the cyberguys and you have to escape the cybergenocide. Those poor unfortunate cybersouls. At least they can di knowing their story has been told. (AICN)

Christmas arrived last week for Tron Guy (aka Jay Maynard) when Tron: Legacy opened nationwide. Being the superstar that he is, he decided to call ahead to his local theater in Minnesota to inform them he’d be attending a screening. However, he was told that he’d be denied admittance if he came dressed in his Tron Guy unitard.

Tron Guy speculates that it was due to his costume being too distracting, as things that glow in the dark are wont to be. But I think we all know it was clearly because of his moose knuckle. I wish Jeff Bridges would invent this guy some Tron pants. (TMZ)

With a name like Serinda Swan, it’s as though this TRON: Legacy actress was always destined to inhabit the role of professional sex symbol. And inhabit the role she has, leading a high profile modeling career, acting on television and in film, and taking up a position as the official spokeswoman of Absolute Poker (because sex sells poker, too). Catch her and the rest of the TRON Sirens when the year’s most highly-anticipated sequel to a movie based on the arcade game “Pong” opens this weekend.

The post Interview: ‘Tron Legacy’ Director Joseph Kosinski appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>

We’ve been talking about Tron: Legacy so much I almost forgot the movie isn’t out yet. Reviews are in, including mine and some more contrary ones. First time feature director Joseph Kosinski is still making press rounds, this time calling up during a speaking engagement at ILM (he’s talking to the FX artists in house about Tron).

So, if you’ve been following, you know pretty much what this movie is. Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) goes back into the Grid to find his dad Kevin (Jeff Bridges). The villain is Clu (young Jeff Bridges), who Kevin created in his own 1989 image. Kosinski answered my questions, inspired by both my interests and others’ complaints about Tron: Legacy, and his next film, The Black Hole. He also saw Daft Punk‘s faces!

Screen Junkies: What were the metaphysical ideas you wanted to explore in Tron Legacy?

Joseph Kosinski: I think the idea of our relationship to technology. That’s kind of the idea that’s fundamental to the original Tron and on this film. It seems particularly apt in the world we all live in today with our smart phones and online identities.

SJ: But it goes beyond that with the idea of programs spontaneously manifesting as life forms.

JK: Yeah, to me that’s pushing into the future of digital technology. The idea that life will be discovered not in outer space but inside the computer is not science fiction. That kind of research is being done as we speak. I think even this year certain scientists have started the very initial steps in creating digital life forms. Even though they’re acting more like bacteria, it’s still a really exciting concept.

SJ: Do you think my Angry Birds app will become sentient?

JK: You know what? A couple years down the road, it might be. It’s not that far off. It’s a pretty cool notion, although I like the idea in our film better where digital life forms come out looking like Olivia Wilde.

SJ: Are there things you set up in Tron Legacy for possible sequels?

JK: Certainly there are some leaping off points if we’re so lucky to come back and do another one. I’ll say this: no one’s taking anything for granted. We’re not in pre-production on a sequel or anything like that at all.

SJ: No, but are you thinking the new head of Encom might rear his head as a bigger force?

JK: Yeah, I think it could happen. Obviously we’ve set the table for some exciting possibilities. I think the idea was we wanted to flesh out the Tron universe. There’s a lot of opportunity there and we’ll see which storyline makes sense to pursue if we’re lucky enough to do another one.

SJ: How hard was it to keep the focus with all the things you might want to explore?

JK: Certainly that’s a challenge. From a conceptual point of view, we tried to be ambitious with this film. There’s a lot in there. You certainly need to pay attention to every line in the movie in order to understand exactly everything that’s going on there. It’s certainly a challenge to balance everything in this movie and everything we wanted to say. Believe it or not, there’s some stuff we weren’t able to include that we talked about at a certain point.

SJ: I was wondering, we now see in the Grid they have books to read, food to eat and nightclubs to go to. What ideas didn’t make it into the film?

JK: There was certainly some discussion of this program uprising that Bartik, the character in the club, the guy Castor’s talking to before Sam’s introduced to him. He’s got the scar down his face. Bartik represents a storyline we wanted to originally flesh out more which is the idea that there are kind of three factions of programs that he was trying, Bartik and Laertes and some other programs were trying to round up this revolution to take Clu down from the inside. There are some hints of that in our film of this revolution that’s trying to get some momentum. In an earlier version of the script it was one we explored a lot more deeply. Ultimately it was more story than our film could handle.

SJ: Did you ever want to have Kevin Flynn in action more to see what skills he developed in 1000 cycles?

JK: Yeah, in our film we were only able to kind of hint at the potential that Flynn possesses. The idea was that when he was in his early stages as Kevin Flynn and he was creating the world, he had tremendous power and was able to create anything he wanted. Now that we’ve found him 1000 cycles later, he’s in some ways the shell of the man he once was. Obviously at the end of the film, we get a glimpse of that potential coming back but we’re not able to explore the concept too deeply in our film.

Q: Did you get to see Daft Punk’s faces?

JK: Well, it’s kind of one of the prerequisites of working with someone for a couple years is you eventually have to have a face-to-face conversation. So yes, I spent a lot of time with Thomas and Guy-Manuel working on this film. It was an incredible experience and a great collaboration.

SJ: How do they look?

JK: They are both stunningly handsome.

SJ: In the beginning of the movie, Sam wants to make Encom’s software free. Is the Disney corporation behind that philosophy?

JK: That’s funny, I’ve had that question a couple times. At least the idea in terms of the film is that Kevin Flynn created the Flynn OS as an open source piece of software. So when Encom decides to package it and sell it, it’s something that Sam Flynn just can’t stand and must release to the wild. In terms of software that’s meant to be free, it should be released out there. However, I think when it comes to intellectual property like Tron: Legacy, I don’t think Disney would be happy with it floating out there on the internet.

SJ: How are things going on The Black Hole?

JK: We’re working on the script. Travis Beacham is the writer who’s working on it, a talented guy that I’ve been wanting to work with for a long time. He’s furiously working on the script as we speak.

SJ: With Tron Legacy you got to explore something you thought about based on the original. What’s your entrée into The Black Hole?

JK: Well, that’s more of a re-imagining. That one I’m really just interested in the fundamental concept at the heart of it, this idea of taking an interstellar journey to a black hole and knowing what we know now about black holes, the incredible phenomena that surround them, the warping of time and space and what it would actually be like to exist in that area and what you could do dramatically in those kind of conditions. So not nearly as tied to the original film as I was on Tron but the fundamental concept to me is fascinating.

SJ: Do you have a new way to approach the space journey, since we’ve seen it so often now in film?

JK: Yeah, I think we do. I think we have a really interesting angle into it but nothing I can talk about.

SJ: The reviews are out on Tron Legacy. Are you surprised what people are picking up on, what’s being missed or people seeing things that aren’t even there?

JK: I’ve only been able to talk to press about it. I haven’t really gotten the opportunity to see it with a general audience yet but it is always interesting. Certainly there were things that I would expect some things I knew would be a challenge or things that would polarize people. Like I said, I think it’s a movie you really have to pay attention to and it is surprising I guess how much people miss the first time watching it. I’ve had a couple people tell me they had to see it twice to get everything we put in there.

SJ: For people going this weekend, where would you tell them: don’t go to the bathroom during this part/pay close attention to this scene?

JK: Gosh, obviously the first 10 minutes is pretty important. The safe house sequence, you get a lot of information there. The problem is no one’s going to be walking out during light cycles, but I guess I would say this: Go before the movie starts. It’s only two hours long. You can make it through. Pay attention and I would recommend seeing it in IMAX 3-D. I think that’s the best way to see it.

Tron: Legacy hits theaters Friday.

The post Interview: Mr. Original Tron Bruce Boxleitner appeared first on Screen Junkies.

]]>

When you’re covering the long awaited sequel to Tron, it’s pretty cool to talk to the original Tron himself. Bruce Boxleitner returns in Tron Legacy as Alan Bradley, the real world counterpart to Tron, who fights for the users in the grid. Alan is still an executive at Encom, and he’s trying to get Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) to come back to his father Kevin’s (Jeff Bridges) company.

A page from Kevin’s old line at the Arcade gets Sam into the new modern day grid. Tron is still running around in there, but he’s under a helmet and a lot has changed. If you want some Tron Legacy spoilers or just to geek out over the original Tron, Boxleitner was happy to entertain the attention in the year 2010.

Screen Junkies: Glad to meet you.

Bruce Boxleitner: Glad that he’s still standing. Like I threw my walker into the corner and said, “I’m in.” I’m talking myself blue about it but it’s kind of true. It is kind of a strange situation, something I walked away from in 1982 when it was almost a bitter experience because they really roughed up the movie, the critics and the industry kind of dismissed it. I think all of this is the final vindication.

SJ: My favorite scenes are actually in the real world with Encom now. How did you feel about seeing that part of the Tron world this time later?

BB: Well, strangely enough, we only shot that a couple months back, three months ago. It was kind of one of the last things shot. After we’d ended principal photography a long time before that, we came back because I was saying they had to make a wig for me to do the beginning. I loved that and I thought it was a really terrific way to start the movie, [Sam] mucking around with them. We had to kind of point up I think in our scene together in his house, I said, “So your annual prank. You always have to do some kind of annual prank.” Really it says a lot about young Sam but it also shows that Encom is not this place, this It’s A Small World Isn’t It place we created in the 1980s. It was taken over by a bunch of young turks that took Encom into places we didn’t want it to be. That’s why he’s sitting there, me I’m CEO in name only and they kind of allow me to.

SJ: Were you happy to see where the character Tron went in the grid?

BB: I was sad. But there’s such thing as reboot.

SJ: Let’s call it the dark direction he went.

BB: The dark direction he went, yes. If that’s what they wanted to do with it, it’s fine. I was quite shocked with the young version of Tron and Flynn walking there, but they got my nose and jaw right. There’s a couple of features on all of our faces, if they don’t do that right, it just misses your face completely. I think they did a great job.

Q: Was it ever you under the helmet?

BB: Never, never. No, no. I was told that right up front. I said, “No, that’s fine. That’s fine with me. I can’t do all of those moves.” Back then would’ve been one thing but now I couldn’t. I did the voice work of it though. When he said, “I fight for the users” in the end. If you’re a real Tron fan, you know the T mark. I saw some murmurings of some of the fans in front of me going, “Oh my God, that’s Tron. Rinzler is Tron.”

SJ: Would you have liked to see Cindy Morgan back as your girlfriend Yori and Lora?

BB: Yeah, if that’s what it was, if it was a grand old reunion. I think you needed Alan and you needed Kevin. You certainly needed Kevin because this is: Where is Kevin Flynn? That was the whole thrust of our story. Yes, it would have been great but we’ve only got so much movie to do and it’s not really about us, the guys from the previous movie. It’s about Sam and Quorra in the end, our two young heroes riding off into the sunrise.

SJ: Fans have speculated about this possible sequel for decades. What have you thought as Tron 2 rumors circulated over the years?

BB: Well, I couldn’t imagine what the story would be. Where would we pick up? That’s why I have to compliment, this script over the last two years has really gone through some changes. Like I said, we were shooting, we did some tweaking only a couple months back. Maybe more than that, three months ago or more. I had no idea when they called me. I was shocked that they would even want me. I kind of knew after Comic-Con when it was released at Comic-Con. I think that was the green light moment. The reaction to the little clip they made, they showed it at Comic-Con three years ago. But the storyline, I couldn’t guess. So when Joe was telling me it, I went, “Wow, I would have never thought of that plot.” I think it’s very original.

SJ: What has the fanfare been like for you over the years?

BB: I have signed every format this movie’s been on because it literally was Beta, VHS, laserdisc, DVD.

SJ: That Beta’s gotta be worth something now.

BB: It is, but everywhere. European formats, everything, I signed it and consistently, more than anything I was ever approached by fans. It was always about that.

SJ: Has any other role been close to that?

BB: The Babylon 5 character because that was another cult thing. They just have to come up and tell you about it. Yeah, over the years, television goes everywhere. Scarecrow and Mrs. King, I got a lot of that back then but those are the most recent ones and that was certainly the rebirth of Tron again, getting much, much more now. It feels good.

SJ: When you made the original Tron, were you thinking of the metaphysics like what is an independent being that’s a program working for a user?

BB: Not at all. I was doing westerns. I couldn’t relate. The only way I could relate to this was I was either like a Buck Rogers type character or Luke Skywalker type character. I auditioned for Star Wars and didn’t get that. Anyway, no, I really didn’t. I did get the basic kind of religious thing, studying our user gods, God. I felt that had a religious feel to it but other than that I was playing Tron by the rules that he lived by. He was a gladiator. He’s kind of Spartacus. I related it to other films, movies, Spartacus, gladiator leading a revolt against the powers that be. Or I was Clark Kent as Alan Bradley and my Superman was Tron. There was nothing to relate to all that stuff. There was no reference other than other movies.

Q: What was one thing that just would not work right on the original Tron?

BB: I found we were in tights and basically the circuitry was drawn on with a Sharpee, these heavy ink pens. I wasn’t quite sure how that was going to work. They kept saying, “Well, that’s going to be animated. The circuitry’s going to go.” I think everything we had worked. We were on a solid black sets, solid black rooms, soundstages which you had to run outside every once in a while just to get some color in your eyes. We were painted white in the game grid so when you see footage from before it was colorized, wow. It looks like something from Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. I didn’t really concern myself with the technology of it. It was way over my head at the time.

SJ: Have you kept up with Battle Zone?

BB: No, no. Some things as a boy you leave behind. All my sons play video games. I’ve got a great game room. I’ve got a 15-year-old, a 30-year-old, a 25-year-old and a 21-year-old. My 21-year-old stepson’s in the Marine Corps and they’re all excited about it there.

SJ: Has being part of the Tron video games kept you in the Tron world?

BB: Yeah, I think very close. I did Tron 2.0, Disney’s Kingdom Hearts had a Tron character in that as well. I did voice work for him. I figured anything that was Tron, if they’re interested in me doing it, I’m going to do it because it would break my heart to hear somebody else doing it, another voice. They were interested, since actors in recent years have been doing voiceovers on games. It’s become quite lucrative but he’s my character, I gave life to him, and I wanted to stick with him. I did even in this one.

Tron Legacy hits theaters Friday.

Time to rock out with our Tron-cocks out! The robots in Daft Punk have released this video for “Derezzed,” the first single from their Tron: Legacy score. If you haven’t heard it yet, it’s a pretty exciting series of beep-boop-bops, and the perfect thing to listen to when cyber-jousting on a Tron horse. Now they have Tron horses! Just when you thought they couldn’t Tron anything else.

The video is mostly a tip of the hat to fans of the original film, done up mostly in the throwback (cost effective) style. But it’s also a tip of the hat to fans saying, “Hubba hubba,” as Olivia Wilde shows up near the end. As if she’d ever set foot in an arcade.

They did it. Tron Legacy is everything you want it to be. It out Matrixes The Matrix with its special physics and gravity, and even more poignant metaphysical themes.

My favorite part is actually in the real world though. Seeing the Tron memorabilia, toys and posters in young Sam Flynn’s room shows a world in which our Tron exists in a more real way. I love the idea that grown up Sam (Garrett Hedlund) is using his family cred to mess with the Encom board and rebel against Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner). Corporations are bad and software should be free. Right, Disney?

When Sam gets into the grid, we get the spectacle we expected, but more importantly an expanded mythology and just plain cool action. It starts with revamped twists on familiar games, the discs and the cycles (no tanks though.) After that, they take us to new realms of the grid. We’re really just thrust into the world with little exposition.

When we finally get to see Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) again, he has some Dude-like moments of backstory. I love the metaphysics this story suggests. Tron had hints of the possibilities, but Legacy explores the images of ourselves, manifested beings and the idea that the pursuit of perfection is corrupt. Clu (young Jeff Bridges) makes total sense. You would create Clu if you were Kevin Flynn, so what he represents is more than just a villain.

The young Jeff Bridges effect looks pretty glassy, and I say we should forgive it because the idea of a young Jeff Bridges in a Tron sequel is awesome. Awesome is always more important than realistic. However, it speaks to a bigger artistic problem that’s worth discussing, as the film’s only flaw. The filmmakers show young Bridges head on. It’s egotistical and calls attention to the effect, which defeats the purpose of trying to create a seamless reality. Even if you have a perfect effect, you should still obscure the special effect in some way, show him from the side or less clearly. It’s more artistic to tease the effect. It builds more wonder. That’s what Spielberg learned with Jaws when he couldn’t show the shark.

This is the reason older special effects look more realistic. It’s not that modern effects are worse, it’s that filmmakers think they can just show everything. Staring at something blatantly isn’t special. Building it with technique is, so that should be one lesson artists take from the powers of technology. The visual effects in the real world are terrible, but I guess those aren’t the important ones.

The 3D is fine. There’s no headache. Perhaps the color scheme is consistent enough to keep the eyes comfortable. There are deep layers throughout the grid to stretch back miles behind the screen. It’s filmed with a blissfully smooth camera so you can actually enjoy all the visuals.

Tron Legacy is great because of the story, not the effects or style. It is full of pretty ladies, impressive physical specimens and wild characters. I love Quorra (Olivia Wilde) the happy program, and all the quirks Castor (Michael Sheen) lets loose just because he can. This is a world you’ll want to revisit again and again.

AICN hosted a contest where fans could enter their videos of other movies getting the Tron treatment for a chance to win a seat at the upcoming Butt-Numb-A-Thon at the Alamo Drafthouse Theater in Austin, TX. Harry Knowles has picked the winner and posted a few worthy runner-ups. Tronitized Aliens, the champion, certainly earned its title. Great FX work, not only with the addition of the neon circuitry, but also the spinning vortex just beyond the hatch. I’ve also included the Tronitized version of Hard Target starring the one and onl JCVD sporting a mullet while balancing atop a light cycle. In the real world, no one could perform a move like that and not derez. Nope wait, that doesn’t make sense.

Check out the videos below.

When we finally see Kevin Flynn again in Tron Legacy, he sort of resembles an even more famous Jeff Bridges character. You’ve seen that barefoot, bearded Flynn in the robe, but he even talks like The Dude. He describes digital jazz, man and doesn’t want anyone to “mess with his Zen.”

“In looking back at Tron, the original, since I’m playing that character and kind of referencing that guy, he would kind of say things like that,” Bridges said at the Tron: Legacy press junket. “I don’t know if you would say Dude-esque because he preceded The Dude, but both [Steven] Lisberger and Joe Kosinski, our director, encouraged that kind of speak. That was Flynn too. Flynn wasn’t a tight, typical Silicon [Valley] guy. He was pretty loose and hippy-ish himself.”

Zen master Bernie Glassman helped Bridges get philosophical. Bridges plays both Flynn and the rogue program Clu. Flynn built Clu in his own likeness. That could really mess with his Zen. “[That’s] pretty familiar, man,” Bridges said. “I always feel like I’m that in a way. So it didn’t mess with it too much. We talked a lot about Flynn, he’s kind of trapped in the absolute reality. He’s discovered that the more he goes against Clu, the more powerful he becomes so he’s kind of retreated and gotten into the place of acceptance for the way it is to such a degree that it’s almost paralyzed him. It takes his son to shake him out of that.”

Glassman was Bridges’ idea. “It was great to be able to include a wonderful friend of mine, Bernie Glassman who is a Zen master in this little process. He was brought on board in some of the early writings to add some of that Zen quality to it. So in the early meetings, we had Bernie just kind of sitting at the table giving thoughts as the story progressed, from a Buddhist perspective. Very helpful.”

Tron Legacy opens Dec. 17.

We don’t always agree on the happenings in the entertainment industry and we like to make our beefs public. There’s a lot of hubbub regarding the release of Disney’s Tron Legacy, but when it comes down to it, do you really care or could you give a sh*t? Fight!

Psyched

I don’t even know why we’re having this debate. Tron Legacy is clearly going to be one of the most beloved and highest grossing movies of the holiday season, if not of all time. The original Tron revolutionized filmmaking and special effects back when it was released in 1982, and Tron Legacy will do the same for 2010. I can practically hear James Cameron shuddering in his Malibu mansion. Not even the warmth of his Avatar money gives him comfort in the face of 3D light cycles.

Speaking of light cycles, let’s speak about light cycles. Hello, Tron Legacy has light cycles. LIGHT CYCLES! This debate could end right here, but I’ll continue just to add insult to injury. If a person was asked, “What’s the only thing you’d give up your first born for?” not one would hesitate responding, “Light cycle” as they shove their infant into the questioner’s arms. We all dream of zipping around The Grid on one, leaving a neon trail behind us representing our digital dust that our enemies can eat.

Continuing on, as if your character has not already been assassinated. Olivia Wilde stars in Tron Legacy. You may recognize her from your visions of a perfect woman or cobbled together masturbatory memories when you find yourself without an Internet connection. They could make a 3D movie about her piercing blue eyes and I’d see it a frightening amount of times. Now add a skintight light suit to that equation. Have I got your attention? Your boner says otherwise.

Upside of light suits: they are awesome. Downside of light suits: they don’t hide boners well, which could be a problem if you’re constantly engaging in conversation with Olivia Wilde or rubbing your junk on the seat of a light cycle. Regardless, it’s worth it. Also, imagine never having to expend mental energy deciding what to wear in the morning ever again. You’d just have a closet full of identical light suits. And everyone would be cool with the fact that you wear the same outfit everyday. You’d be the Charlie Brown of the future. Only badasser!

Jeff Bridges reprises his role of Kevin Flynn in Tron Legacy. If you say one negative thing about The Dude I’ll cut you open like a Turducken. He’s got an Oscar now. And not only is he in the film, but he’s in it as older Flynn and younger Flynn. They actually de-aged The Dude. And it looks fantastic! Alright, it’s a little creepy, but still. I’d have to go back and watch The Last Picture Show to see Jeff Bridges that young, and I refuse to do that because it’s in black and white. Now that I’ve seen the Tron Legacy trailer I could never turn my back on color ever again.

I’ll conclude with light discs. Name a coole weapon? You’d have to practice throwing them at first, but once your skillz are solid you’d be the most feared man in town. No one would eff with the light disc guy who leaves on Sycamore in the house with the blue shutters. I just imagine you’d have blue shutters.

Oh, and Bee People. The last trailer for Tron Legacy introduced Bee People.

WTF? Exactly. Don’t pretend like you’re not dying to see the movie now. You just derezed in your light suit pants.

Could Give a Shit

I haven’t seen such an unnecessary sequel since Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call – New Orleans, and in all fairness, that was a sequel in name only. First of all, let’s face facts. The original Tron wasn’t that good. So who in God’s name was clamoring for this film? The way they are marketing it, you’d think they were preparing for the second coming of Christ (or the 12th Imam, if that’s your thing). Honestly, the original is nearly 30 years old. I’m confident that not once between the years of 1982 and 2002 did anyone ever say “Boy, I hope they make a Tron sequel.” If people had wanted a sequel, they would have made it. It’s only now when Hollywood is scraping the absolute bottom of the creative barrel that they dig up Tron.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m sure that due to the special effects, not to mention the obscene amount of advertising, the film will do well at the box office. But that doesn’t mean we should give a shit. “Oh, the film has cool futuristic bikes! They go super fast! I hope they don’t crash!” Shut the hell up. I didn’t like sitting through 30 minutes of pod-races during Phantom Menace, so why should I care that they’ve changed it to “light cycles” on a black background? Special effects are important, but they are nothing without a good plot. And if the first film is any indication, we’re in for a real shit show.

“Oh, but Olivia Wilde is in it! Her boobies make my pee pee move.” Again, so what? Yeah, she’s hot. But why am I going to spend close to $20 on a shitty movie just because there’s a hot chick in it? There’s this thing called the Internet, and it brings you naked women for free. Go to Google Image Search, turn off the filters, and go to town. I’m looking at Olivia Wilde’s nipples right now, and I didn’t have to spend 40 minutes watching some douche bag snoop around an old arcade. What it boils down to is this: with the abundance of free porn on the Internet, it’s going to take more than Olivia Wilde’s hot ass to get me to a movie theater.

As far as the outfits, times have changed. Back in 1982, calling them gay would have been totally acceptable. But today, homosexuality is much more accepted, as it should be. And to be honest, what gay guy would ever be caught dead wearing that outfit? They’re hideous, not to mention impractical. Can you imagine how ripe it must get under there? If you can’t, why not ask this fat ass. If you email him, I’m sure he’ll let you come over and smell for yourself, provided his mother allows it, and he’s not busy cutting up hookers to assemble his own Yori.

And I will concede that Jeff Bridges is a plus. Far be it from me to badmouth The Dude, although as good as Lebowski was, referencing it jumped the shark years ago. I say that with great sorrow, because my wardrobe consists mainly of Lebwoski tee-shirts. But I digress. The point is, Jeff Bridges doesn’t guarantee anything. He’s great, but he’s been in several awful films: The Vanishing, Seabiscuit, the 1976 King Kong remake! And let’s not forget another little turd called Tron!

Speaking of turds, lets finish up with the weapons of the Tron universe, or as I call them, Frisbees. “Name a cooler weapon?” How about a sharp stick with poop on the end of it? The day I fear a Frisbee is the day I re-watch Love, Actually.

In conclusion, Tron: Legacy is a movie nobody asked for that’s being forced down the throats of a generation whose only contact with the original comes from references on “The Simpsons.” And hell, even those references are probably over a decade old by now. If it’s anything like the original, not even The Dude or Olivia Wilde’s ass can save it. It will make money, but so di Paul Blart: Mall Cop.

Oh, and “bee people.”

Friggin’ lame.

Tron: Legacy has released its international teaser trailer. It looks a lot like the teaser trailer that was already released, except it’s been cut in a slightly different manner, as not to upset the good people of Finland. After all, when your trailer depicts a bunch of dudes in glowing suits riding around on futuristic bikes, you’re dealing with a cultural powder keg. It’s best to start from scratch and make a separate version. You can’t be to careful. (Latino Review)

It’s “Tron Tuesday” (Observed) and that means another look at the film. Last time around, we saw Jeff Bridges in cuckoo-go-nuts mode when reunited with his son, and before that, we saw Sam Flynn tool around with Olivia Wilde in a Tron car. Today, we have a scene that is going to loan so much inspiration to the porn parody. In this clip, Sam Flynn finds himself surround by Sirens (aka Madonna video extras), who laser his pants off and hook him up with Tron clothes and plot exposition. Okay. Now I know what the identity disc is, but just explain to me the bee people. I’d like to know why there are bee people.

Normally I’d protest that Disney is showing too much, but I have a feeling this is only a small taste of what’s to come. Having got the chance to see 3D footage already, I can guarantee you the neon lights and derezing is even cooler when it’s directly in front of your face. The same goes for Olivia Wilde. If only you could reach out and touch her… Can’t James Cameron and Disney combine their forces to invent that technology? Olivia-Wilde-vision. Things just got really dangerous for Col. Hans’s wallet. Disney is opening a Tron: Legacy Pop-Up Shop in Culver City, CA  for six weeks beginning November 19th. At the store you’ll be able to buy all kinds of neon-trimmed crap. They have jumpsuits, action figures, an iPod docking station that looks a Tron data disk, ink pens, and t-shirts, etc..

Besides all that and hot chicks with weird haircuts working the floor (probably), they will release new exclusive merchandise each week that can’t be found anywhere else. If you get hungry while shopping for nerdy stuff, swing by Retro/T’s cafe for some Tron-themed food. Because if there’s one thing computer geeks love, it’s Tron and food. No Tron meatballs though. While that is sad news, there's no reason for Mel to sweat it. There are pleanty of blockbusters in production, any one of which could help jump-start his scandal plagued career. We went ahead and did some research, and narrowed it down to nine upcoming films that Mel should focus on. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows While they have many adult fans, the Harry Potter films are for children. Children don't watch TMZ, so what better way for Mel to slip under the radar than with a cameo in the Deathly Hallows. It's a great plan, unless Mel's private church considers it witchcraft.

We went ahead and did some research, and narrowed it down to nine upcoming films that Mel should focus on.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
While they have many adult fans, the Harry Potter films are for children. Children don’t watch TMZ, so what better way for Mel to slip under the radar than with a cameo in the Deathly Hallows. It’s a great plan, unless Mel’s private church considers it witchcraft.

The Hobbit
A strange man from the wastelands just wandered into The Shire. This will end poorly.

Tron: Legacy
Call me crazy, but I am not excited about Tron: Legacy. Throw Mel into the mix, and you’ll have my attention.

Mission: Impossible 4
The title is officially Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. So why not use the ghost of William Wallace?

Justin Bieber: Never Say Never
This film is the perfect chance for Mel to reinvent himself with a tween audience. The only problem: Jaden Smith.

Captain America: The First Avenger
Since this film takes place during World War II, I bet there’s a role that’s just perfect for Mel.

The Twilight Saga: breaking Dawn
Another film that will allow Mel to break into the tween market, Breaking Dawn also provides Mel with the opportunity for some off-screen high jinks with Robert Pattinson.

The Smurfs
Skin color doesn’t matter to some people. Unfortunately for you blue bastards, Mel is not one of those people.

Rise of the Apes
At the end of the day, if Mel can’t find regular acting work, there are always "motion capture" gigs to fall back on.

The unofficial campaign name is Operation: Tron Legacy Blue Balls, as I can only take so much teasing before it starts to get painful. In this new music-centered trailer, footage you've already seen is backed with the new Daft Punk track, "Derezzed." We've heard "The Game Has Changed," which is more of a "getting pumped to enter an arena" track. "Derezzed" is a more of a "cut his f*cking head off with that light disc!" track. It bumps, yo. Marvel Characters Get ‘Tron’ Treatment http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/marvel-characters-get-tron-treatment/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/marvel-characters-get-tron-treatment/#comments Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 Nerd worlds have officially collided. In anticipation of the release of Disney's Tron Legacy, Marvel Comics has created variant covers to celebrate just how nerdy nerd things can get. Beginning in November, superheroes Captain America, Spider-man, Iron Man, and others will get rave-friendly neon lights added to their attire. If you speak fluent nerd, the issues featuring Tron variants, and spotlighted characters, are as follows: • AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #651 TRON Variant, featuring Spider-Man • AVENGERS #7 TRON Variant. featuring Spider-Woman • AVENGERS ACADEMY #7 TRON Variant, featuring Quicksilver • CAPTAIN AMERICA #612 TRON Variant, featuring Captain America • INCREDIBLE HULKS #618 TRON Variant, featuring Ghost Rider • INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #33 TRON Variant, featuring Iron Man • NEW AVENGERS #7 TRON Variant, featuring Ms. Marvel • SECRET AVENGERS #7 TRON Variant, featuring Moon Knight • THOR #617 TRON Variant, featuring Thor • WOLVERINE #4 TRON Variant, featuring Wolverine In all honesty though, these re-interpretations look pretty sweet. I just wish it didn't feel so whorey. It's as if each of the above comics should come with a BK Broiler with a cutesy name like the BK Tronoiler. It doesn't sound the least bit appetizing, but you'd eat it because the pickles glow. Hot damn, I'm a marketing genius. Now to the lab to make pickles glow... Look at Daft Punk in ‘Tron Legacy’ and Listen to a Track http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/look-at-daft-punk-in-tron-legacy-and-listen-to-a-track/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/look-at-daft-punk-in-tron-legacy-and-listen-to-a-track/#comments Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 In this official pic from Tron Legacy, Daft Punk looks like Daft Punk, but cooler! Look at the blue. I want to go to there. This sneak peak at the French duo is the kickoff of what Disney is calling Tron Tuesdays, which will see the release of new materials for the film every Tuesday for the next ten weeks as the film’s release date approaches. I would be happy if they just released a new Daft Punk track from the film's score every week. Oh, look what else we have. A new Daft Punk track from the film's score. The first 90 seconds of "The Game Has Changed" gets me so amped for the film that I want to cram a Cat 9 cable into the gapping hole at the base of my skull. I've always assumed that's the reason it's there anyway. Check out the killer track after the jump...

James Cameron Pees in ‘Piranha 3D’s’ Pool http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/james-cameron-pees-in-piranha-3ds-pool/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/james-cameron-pees-in-piranha-3ds-pool/#comments Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 Hey, everybody! James Cameron has something important to say about the dangers of using 3D technology in an inappropriate manner, so listen up! I tend almost never to throw other films under the bus, but (Piranha 3D) is exactly an example of what we should not be doing in 3-D. Because it just cheapens the medium and reminds you of the bad 3-D horror films from the 70s and 80s, like Friday the 13th 3-D. When movies got to the bottom of the barrel of their creativity and at the last gasp of their financial lifespan, they did a 3-D version to get the last few drops of blood out of the turnip. First of all, comparing Piranha 3D to Friday the 13th Part III is like comparing Kim Kardashian to the cast of "The View." Both are incredibly stupid, but one is still fun to watch if you're in the mood (for porn). Piranha 3D knew what it was supposed to be, and it hit the mark. Critics agree, and its Rotten Tomatoes ranking rivals that of Avatar (not that the two movies should be compared). Why should a film that is meant to be nothing more than a fun, summer gore-fest be excluded from using 3D technology? Not every 3D film needs to be a smug, ham-fisted retread of Dances with Wolves. Second, if you want to talk about squeezing blood from a turnip, how about Avatar Special Edition, which is charging fans roughly $15 dollars to see a movie that was still in theaters less than a year ago. Oh, let's not forget the eight minutes of extra footage, which comes out to about $2 per new minute. At the end of the day, if people want to pay $15 to see Avatar again, good for Cameron. But if those same people want to pay to see fish dismembering topless girls, who is he to judge? (Vanity Fair via Movie Line)

Comic-Con: ‘Tron Legacy’ Panel Video http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/comic-con-tron-legacy-panel-video/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-news/comic-con-tron-legacy-panel-video/#comments Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 The first event I caught at this year's Comic-Con was the Tron Legacy panel, moderated by Patton Oswalt, a favorite comedian of mine and yours. I'm not allowed to show you the footage that was screened, although you can read my brief description in my Thursday's adventures recap, but I have video of the panel discussion. You can also check out the awesome new trailer here. All of the actors were in attendence (for a third year in a row), including Garret Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, Michael Sheen, and Jeff Bridges, as well as director Joseph Kosinski. They enlighten us on the process of making the film, the flashy difference between Tron Legacy and Tron proper, and how Olivia kicked-ass in high heels. You really shouldn't need much more convincing to see the film when it opens on December 17, 2010.
