Topher Grace is adding shocked disbelief to his roster of reactions. He’s signed on to star in Home, a supernatural thriller which of course is being produced by Jason Blum. In the film, Grace plays a man who inherits a creepy mansion after being released from a mental institution. After a few disturbing instances of mirror scares, he comes to the conclusion that the place is haunted.

But what if it’s all in his head, you guys? What if it’s all in his head???? Oh my God, I just realized. What if WE’RE ALL just in his head???? (THR)

After having gone down the road on more off-beat comedies and weird thirty-minute shows, HBO seems to be circling the wagons on a big comedy. Not only does People in New Jersey star Sarah Silverman and Topher Grace, but it’s produced by Lorne Michaels and the pilot will be directed by Bridesmaids and The Heat helmer Paul Feig.

Further details on the show are sparse, but it seems to examine the family dynamic not only between brother and sister, but mother and children as well. How this show doesn’t star Jason Schwartzman is baffling to me. Maybe they ran out of space to include his name or something.

The pilot script will be written by Girls and Six Feet Under writer Bruce Eric Kaplan, and you can tell from his two first name that this gentleman doesn’t eff around.

Time to saddle on up and head over to Casting Call Fields, to see which actors are getting rustled up for which Hollywood movies. Don’t look away while the casting director brands their actors with the iron, unless you’re a yellow-bellied coward.

Olivia Munn has officially joined Aaron Sorkin‘s HBO drama about what happens behind-the-scenes – whoa, there’s a behind-the scenes? – at a cable news show. Currently the series is called “More As The Story Develops.” When I wished I could “see more” of Olivia Munn, her suddenly getting a lot of acting work was not what I had in mind. Stupid monkey’s paw. Meanwhile, Allison Pill (Milk) joins the cast as an associate producer in a shaky relationship with another staffer. The reason the relationship’s shaky? He accidentally asked her to give him some “forehead.” (Hollywood Reporter)

The old and buster Spider-Man, Topher Grace, is set to star in Gently Down The Stream along with Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton, Amanda Seyfried and Katherine Heigl. He’ll play De Niro’s son, who falls in love with his adopted brother’s Latin sister. Eh, that kind of thing happens all the time, I’m sure. Justin Zackham is directing. (Deadline)

Rapper / actor / vitamin water aficionado 50 Cent will play blind DJ Shamus Cocobolo in Stephen Sommers‘ Odd Thomas. Yeah, that does sound odd. Based on the bestseller by Dean Koontz, the film’s about a clairvoyant short order cook (Anton Yelchin) who follows around a suspicious man connected to an impending disaster. Odd Thomas also stars Addison Timlin, Willem Dafoe and Patton Oswalt. (Variety)

I’ve been getting hundreds of emails a day, all with the same basic message: “More Richard Gere news!” With that in mind, here’s the latest on the Richard Gere drama The Double, the debut feature from Michael Brandt: It’s been picked up by Image Entertainment, in advance of its premiere at Cannes. Here’s a plot synopsis, in case the involvement of Richard Gere isn’t enough:

“A retired CIA operative is paired with a young FBI agent to figure out who killed a senator. The clues indicate that he might have been a victim of a Soviet assassin.”

The Double also stars Topher Grace and Martin Sheen, neither of which are Richard Gere. So keep your eyes peeled, Gere fans! The Double will come to a theater near you, maybe. (Deadline)

Review: Take Me Home Tonight http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-review/review-take-me-home-tonight/ http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-review/review-take-me-home-tonight/#comments Fri, 04 Mar 2011 16:58:55 +0000 Fred Topel http://www.screenjunkies.com/?p=93228 Boy, they just don’t make ‘80s movies like they used to.

Boy, they just don’t make ‘80s movies like they used to. Not like the good old days of the ‘90s. The Wedding Singer and Can’t Hardly Wait were much more like the ‘80s movies that inspired them. Even Hot Tub Time Machine. That was bad, but it got the ‘80s formula right.

Take Me Home Tonight is the classic story of a shy, unpopular guy who wants a shot with his high school dream girl. It’s already after college graduation, but everyone’s back in town for a party. Matt’s (Topher Grace) big plan? Tell Tori (Teresa Palmer) he works at Goldman Sachs, when he really works at Suncoast Video.

That’s it? Lie about your job? Just to get her phone number (that’s really all he wants)? In the ‘80s, the big scheme was buying the popular girl for a month or at least borrowing her panties. They don’t even make Tori an ironically desirable bitch. Here in the ‘00s we don’t have unlikable romantic leads.

Matt went to MIT but doesn’t know what he wants to do with his life, so he’s not getting a high paying job. Dude, that’s the ‘90s slacker mentality, not the ‘80s. The clothes and the hair are cute and the girls look great but this movie is made by ‘90s kids who think they get the ‘80s but they don’t.

There are a few funny parts but most of it is hipster humor, like look how retro we are but really we’re just playing at it. Matt’s twin sister Wendy (Anna Faris) knows all of Matt’s schtick so she says everything he’s going to say at the same time, including spontaneous profanity. They both know Barry’s(Dan Fogler) schtick too so they narrate it from a distance. Barry and Matt lip sync “Straight Outta Compton,” including the N word. Because they’re actually white.

Demetri Martin is by far the funniest thing in the movie. He’s in two scenes as a wheelchair bound high school success story. His brand of humor works on its own, even in the middle of this. Barry agreeing to let a woman’s husband watch them do it ends up being funny for an easy joke, as does Barry trying to talk dirty to her.

The romance is actually sweet, but it takes a yuppie banker party and carefree yard hopping to get there. Wendy’s D-bag boyfriend Kyle (Chris Pratt) actually makes good at one point. Matt’s dad, Bill (Michael Biehn), delivers a decent, but in now way profound, message. Just take a shot. Do something! Then he really overdoes the gun metaphor.

There’s a reason this movie took four years and two different titles to come out. They had the best of intentions but it just doesn’t work no matter how they spin it.

The spiritual sequel to “That 70′s Show,” Take Me Home Tonight, is ready to rock with a new red-band trailer that offers a look at 1980′s style debauchery. Car theft, drugs, sex, and trampolining without a license are all put on display this time around. This isn’t that much more extreme than the previous trailer but it’s definitely more willing to have a good time. You can tell because it’s wearing a necktie as if it were a bandana.

Spider-Man 3 should have launched Topher Grace onto the A-list. But then people saw the movie. He’s been laying lowish these last few years, and now ready to return to what he does best… previous decade-based comedy. This time the “That 70′s Show” star is taking on the 80′s with Take Me Home Tonight. He plays a recent MIT grad whose unsure about his future. Naturally, he takes a job at Suncoast Video while figuring himself out. Until the day his high school crush walks in to buy a copy of Cocktail. She invites him and his loser friends to a party. What happens next? Decade-specific hijinx, of course.

Hmm… expensive education, arrested emotional development, video store knowledge. I think the logical next step is for Topher’s character to get a job at Screen Junkies.
