Christopher Eccleston Will Get Hit With A Hammer In ‘Thor 2′

After the deal with Mads Mikkelsen fell through, Marvel was left with the task of finding an actor European enough to play the villian in Thor: The Dark World. Enter former Dr. Who star Christopher Eccleston.

The English actor has signed on to play the ruler of the Dark Elves, Malekith the Accursed in the 2013 sequel. Plot details are still under wraps but the comics version of Malekith is extremely powerful. However, he does have a weakness to iron. Maybe Thor isn’t the best Avenger to be fighting him. Surely, there is someone else better suited. (Deadline)

Robert Rodat Taking A Hammer To ‘Thor 2′ Script

Robert Rodat is gettin’ paaaaaiiiiddddd. The Saving Private Ryan writer has been hired to rewrite Marvel‘s Thor 2. Now that Alan Taylor is firmly in place for realsies to direct, the studio was ready to bring in the creator of Falling Skies for a rewrite. It’s unclear what the plot details for the film will be. There’s speculation that the sequel will deal with the aftermath of the events that take place in The Avengers. However, it has been disclosed that Iron Man 3 will be its own standalone film. Perhaps they will go the solo route with Thor 2 as well and Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman will totally do it and have Thor babies.

One thing that is for certain, Rodat’s talent for creating carefully crafted characters and intense moral dilemmas will not be needed here. Any deeper moments will be replaced with “Thor throws hammer at a laser.” (Deadline)

‘Thor 2′ Has A Director Again

Earlier assumptions that Thor 2 was just going to direct itself seem to have been proved false. After dismissing Game of Thrones director Brian Kirk and Monster director Patty Jenkins, they have now settled on Alan Taylor, a different Game of Thrones director.

Marvel has been notoriously cheap when it comes to paying the directors and talent from their films, so it is surmised that Taylor met the right price and won’t push back when bullied with studio notes. Until, of course, he a lab accident or magical talisman grants him super-human abilities and help him find the confidence to stand up for himself and the downtrodden masses.

Also in the running for the gig was Daniel Minahan, who also directs on HBO‘s Game of Thrones. Man, that show is going to have an awkward season two premiere party. (Deadline)

‘Game Of Thrones’ Director Brian Kirk In Talks For ‘Thor’ Sequel

Well, three months after a Viking(ish) Thor came into our hearts, Marvel has started the public search for a director for its inevitable sequel, and the first name up manages to be both inspired and somewhat obvious. Variety reports that Game of Thrones director Brian Kirk has been in talks with Marvel to get behind the camera for the sequel.

While it’s not an easy transition from most TV (considered a writer’s medium) to film (considered a director’s medium), HBO series in general, and Game of Thrones in particular have managed to buck that philosophy, with the latter creating a lush world that at the very least can be called cinematic.

It’s anticipated that the sequel will take a more epic approach, creating a world of Norse warriors undoubtedly similar to many of the characters in the HBO series. While nothing has been finalized, the thoughtful pace of Game of Thrones could be a welcome addition to the world of Marvel, which is often subjected to criticism that it’s a little too digestible at times.

If they’re going to go this route, I suppose it’s too much to ask for an R rating?

‘Thor 2′ For Summer 2013 With Hemsworth, But Not Branagh

In news that was only a matter of time given the success of the original a couple months back, Thor will officially be returning with Hemsworth back in the helmet, but Branagh serving as only a producer, and not as the helmer on the victory lap. Right now, Marvel‘s biggest competition seems to be with itself, as Iron Man 3 is slated to hit theaters on May 3, so expect the newer franchise to see a release later in the summer, an upgrade from its late-spring release date for the original.

It’s probably best that Marvel locked down Hemsworth now (though it was probably in his initial contract) because his stock seems to be rising with Snow White and the Huntsman, as well as the news yesterday that he would be starring in Shadow Runner as a special ops leader, with little else known.

And Marvel gets one step closer to having a major comic adaptation release every week for the rest of time… (Deadline)
