With Marvel’s The Wolverine hitting theaters July 26th, we’re getting another long-awaited dose of one of the more famous and anti-heroic superheroes. There’s a lot we know about the one we call Wolverine, but seeing as how the comic book character is almost 40 years old, there’s a lot we don’t know, too. Here are seven things you may not have known about that guy with the lamb chops and claws.

7. He First Appeared in a Hulk Comic

Specifically, the Incredible Hulk #180, then continuing on in #181, and ending in #181. He’s fairly nondescript in his debut, as I’m sure the writers were still crafting his back story, but they got the broad strokes right: He was an angry guy with claws named Wolverine.

6. By His Second Appearance, He Was Already an X-Man

About his debut being nondescript… it’s pretty clear that he was going to be a member of the X-Men from the get-go, and it’s in Giant Size X-Men #1 that we see his sweet hairdo for the first time, as he always had his mask on before that. Granted, he wasn’t one of the ORIGINAL X-Men, but the comic book guys got him there as fast as they could.

5. Wolverine Was Supposedly Intended Be Born As a Wolverine Cub

His first origin story was supposed to be as a wolverine cub who gets mutated over time by a geneticist to become human(ish). Len Wein, Wolverine’s creator, vehemently denies this, but the “fact” has been such a part of Marvel lore that it was even included in a X-Men Origins: Wolverine Blu-Ray feature, which just pissed Wein off more.

4. Speaking of Len Wein, Wolverine Wasn’t Created by Stan Lee

It’s easy to assume that Wolverine, because he’s popular and a Marvel character, was created by Stan Lee, the famous creator of many iconic characters, like the Hulk, Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man. Nope. In fact, one could argue that the character wasn’t even created by Len Wein, as he was working under direct orders from Marvel editor Roy Thomas, who wanted Wein to create a character that was small, angry, and Canadian(!).

Wein did as he was told, and Wolverine was born.

3. Wolverine Fought for Canada in WWI, and with Captain America in WWII, Then Again with Canada at D-Day, Then Worked for the CIA.

For someone who hates authority, Wolverine sure did spend a lot of time fighting in the military. He arrived at D-Day via parachute. Also, he seems kind of violent for a Canadian, but that’s neither here nor there. He would have been a nice guy to have on your side, though I’m not sure that retractable melee weapons would really be an asset in the age of drones and smart bombs.

2. There’s Only One Way to Kill Wolverine

Because his body regenerates so quickly and efficiently, you’re gonna have to take his head clean off in order to end him. Not only that, but in a profile written by the famous Professor Xavier, it’s said that if you want him to STAY dead, you also better remove his noggin from anywhere near his body and keep it away.

Even for a comic book character, this guy sounds pretty tough.

1. There’s Only One Substance on Earth That Wolverine’s Claws Can’t Destroy

It’s not diamonds. Nor is it balsa wood (Really? That’s your guess? BALSA WOOD?). Rather, it’s Captain America’s shield (Stop laughing. For real. It’s the shield.). Cap’n’s shield is made out of an iron-vibranium alloy, which, for those of you not up on your fictitious metallurgy, is a very, very, very strong metal.

So the best advice to those who are planning on pissing off Wolverine: Don’t. And if you have: Run.

It wouldn’t be a very successful trip to Japan for Wolverine if he didn’t take the time to fight some random Yakuza guys on the roof of a bullet train. That would be like going to Paris and not eating at a cafe.

Anyway, now you can have a good look at the fight scene teased in all of trailers in advance of The Wolverine’s premiere on July 26th. It’s pretty thrilling. Lucky for us that Wolverine didn’t decide to just stab those guys really quick and call it a day.

Personally, I can’t wait for Logan’s Japan Adventure. Especially looking forward to the fight scene teased in the image below.

Like the Bad News Bears and Big Bird before him, Wolverine has headed to Japan to get his groove back. Groove, in this sense, means mortality as Logan knows that Japan leads the world in immortality-removing sciences. That’s just the story on the surface. Really, it’s all just an excuse to see Wolverine fight ninjas.

Because it’s Comic-Con, and these are the things that we talk about, Hugh Jackman took to a parking lot in promotion of the upcoming Real Steel to talk about his upcoming projects. This being Comic-Con, Wolverine 2 was the topic of most discussion.

He revealed to the attendees that he will be fighting Silver Samurai in the X-Men universe sequel, which begins filming in October after a handful of delays ranging from director bailouts to Asian tsunamis. Writer Chris McQuarrie (Jack the Giant Killer) is drafting teh script and thought that the villain is the best foil for the sequel, tentatively titled The Wolverine. There is no word on who will play the Silver Samurai, but we can bet it will be announced shortly.

Screen Rant offers some background on the villain:

The Silver Samurai (character’s “real” name is Kenuichio Harada) has a long history in the Marvel Universe and should make an admirable foe for Wolverine. Harada is actually the half-brother of Wolverine’s lover Mariko Yashida and he has major issues with her relationship with Wolvie. In the comics, Wolverine is trained in the ways of the samurai by Kenuichio and Mariko’s father Shingen and eventually joins Shingen’s Clan Yashida.

That’s a lot of info for one paragraph, but it sounds…just terrific. WOLVERINES!!!!

Jose Padilha, Doug Liman (Mr. and Mrs. Smith), Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), Justin Lin (Fast Five), Gavin O’Connor, and Gary Shore read all those X-Men comics for nothing. The helm of The Wolverine will officially go to James Mangold.

As we all know, Darren Aronofsky nearly burned down the Internet when it was announced that he would direct the sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Then he tried to put that fire out with gasoline when he announced, “Eh, eff this.” He cited wanting to spend time with his family as a reason for his departure but a more likely reason was he realized he was attached to The Wolverine. It looks like Mangold has no such qualms. And, hey, it can’t be any more silly than when he and Hugh Jackman teamed up for Kate & Leopold. (Deadline)

Mark Romanek never got his chance to make The Wolfman so we were excited when he was put on the short list for another movie about a hairy guy with claws… Weston Coppola The Wolverine. But, alas, Romanek will not be stepping into the flowy directing scarf left vacant by Darren Aronofsky. Here’s the straight dope from Romanek:

“That’s just one of those stories that floated around. I was on their list, I received the script months ago. It didn’t seem like my kind of thing. That script was a terrific version of that kind of thing, but not something I felt really passionate about.”

That leaves us with Jose Padilha, Doug Liman (Mr. and Mrs. Smith), Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), Justin Lin (Fast Five), Gavin O’Connor, James Mangold (Knight and Day) and Gary Shore as potentials. I think Liman or Mangold could turn in an interesting film, but you just know it’s going to be Justin Lin. If we get another two X-Men films back-to-back the moon will shift into alignment and then we’ll have Cthulhu to deal with. (Digital Spy)

Ever since Darren Aronofsky ditched The Wolverine, it’s only been a question of who will step up to take his place. And now, in a truly newsworthy development, we know exactly who it will be – one of these eight guys: Jose Padilha, Doug Liman (Mr. and Mrs. Smith), Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), Mark Romanek (Never Let Me Go), Justin Lin (Fast Five), Gavin O’Connor, James Mangold (Knight and Day) and Gary Shore.

It’s possible that all these names aren’t familiar to you. For one, Gary Shore is mostly a commercial director. The rest are directors of a blend of relatively anonymous action movies like Knight and Day, and art films like Never Let Me Go. It remains to be seen which direction FOX will go in – but no matter which way they go, it’ll probably be better than the first Wolverine movie. (Variety)

Tsunamis and Aronofsky be damned; The Wolverine marches on.

After losing their attached director to scheduling conflicts, and their shooting locations to a natural disaster, the producers of The Wolverine seems to be slowly but surely moving forward, holding meetings with the frontrunner to replace Mr. Black Swan. The search was spearheaded by David Slade, who was attached before Aronofsky came along, demonstrating that studios can be friends after being lovers.

Duncan Jones, helmer of Moon and the more recent Source Code, has recently confirmed that he is in talks with Fox to discuss taking the reins of the ill-fated project. However, Jones seems more inclined to pursue directing his own material, rather than the writing of others, despite the fact that the script for The Wolverine is supposed to be top notch.

It’s widely rumored that the studio is more than willing to take its time with this project after backlash from the previous Wolverine entry. So just because the ball is rolling here, don’t expect the previous timetable to be kept. ‘Cause after the director problem gets solved, there’s still all that mess devastation in Asia to deal with. Remember how terrible X-Men Origins: Wolverine was? Then remember getting excited because Darren Aronofsky was in talks to direct The Wolverine, so there was a possibility of it being awesome? Then remember how Aronofsky said he’d rather spend time with his precious family (baww!) than direct a sequel to a movie about a guy with claw hands who’s been alive since forever? And then the devastating tsunami tore through Japan, which is where the Marvel movie was supposed to shoot, and that’s when I gave up all hope… *Cries Into Pillow*

Wait a second, bubs and bubbettes. Hugh Jackman made the following statement at CinemaCon today, in an effort to slice up the evil villain Malaise-O, who has kidnapped the film’s production since Aronofsky’s departure:

“We’re not going to settle. We’re going to find a director as good as Darren, if not better. Well, as good. Everyone is still pushing forward to getting it done.”

I’m gonna personally hold him to that promise, because Origins was so bad and they would not return my money or beloved childhood memories of Wolverine at the box office. With a script by talented Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects), they should be able to get someone good, but Fox has a reputation for being very controlling. That might be the real reason why Aronofsky didn’t stick around, and it might be hard to find an auteur who’s eager for notes like, “could we make this samurai story less Japanese somehow?” (ScreenRant)

Darren Aronofsky discussed some of his plans for the Wolverine sequel (which I guess means this is actually happening), and it sounds like this could be a really good movie about a guy who has knives jutting out of his metacarpus. First off, the sequel is going to completely disavow its predecessor X-Men Origins: Wolverine, in favor of being a standalone (read: awesome) film.

In order to distance it from the previous misfire, the film will not be called Wolverine 2, rather The Wolverine. Aronofsky’s talent for telling dark, gritty, complex, thoughtful, character studies should be well-applied to Logan’s time spent in Japan, and highlight the more tortured aspects of the mutant. Though I’m excited to see a Wolverine more grounded in reality, I do feel an “ass-to-ass” scene between Wolverine and Sabretooth would be completely out of place. Please do not include. (HitFix)
