Is Depp up for playing a slurry, drunk character across multiple sequels?

Johnny Depp bounces back fast. Thanks to diet and exercise, he’s already got his next franchise lined up after the implosion of Disney’s The Lone Ranger. David Koepp has been called in to script the reboot of The Thin Man. The film will show Depp as a dashing drunk named Nick Charles, who teams up with his socialite wife, Nora, to solve a murder.

The original film is considered a classic and spawned five sequels, which I’m sure is intriguing to Depp. It would be nice to slur his way through the same character constantly without having to slip into a pirate costume to do so. The reboot is being planned as a Sherlock Holmes-esque update that will mix high adventure with the iconic characters. Rob Marshall will direct, so expect a little song and dance as well.

No word on who will play Nora or the couple’s dog. (Deadline)

Hopefully he can make alcoholism funny again.

America is clamoring for a 21st century version of the lovably alcoholic detective Nick Charles and his even more lovably alcoholic wife Nora. And it’s been pretty well-known for a while now that Johnny Depp was interested in bringing at least one of these characters to life. Now, The Thin Man 2.0 (not the actual title) officially has a director/producer in Rob Marshall, who most recently worked with Johnny Depp drunk on rum instead of martinis in the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie. He’s sharing whatever duties a producer has with John DeLuca. Here’s what Marshall has to say about the project:

“John and I are overjoyed at the idea of working with Johnny again, especially on such a classy and classic project. We are also thrilled to be partnering this time with such wonderful producers as Christi Dembroski and Kevin McCormick, and we are looking forward to working with Warner Bros. to create a reinvention of a beloved story.”

That’s right – a remake of a beloved movie from the early 1930s is as “classy and classic” as it gets. No word yet on who will step into the oversized and slightly tipsy shoes of the original Nora Charles, Myrna Loy. Maybe Johnny Depp could play both parts?

Well, it looks like Johnny Depp will get to play an entirely new type of off-kilter fop in The Thin Man

Johnny Depp will not be working with Tim Burton on this project, but it is a film that is not based on original material, so it should be very much in Depp’s comfort zone. The much-loved Hollywood classic The Thin Man will getting the remake treatment from director Rob Marshall, with Hollywood vet Jerry Stahl (Bad Boys II, Permanent Midnight) penning the script.

The 1934 classic starred William Powell and Myrna Loy and spawned five sequels, so it’s likely that Warner Bros. has picked up on the sweet, sweet aroma of a franchise with this one. The original was described as follows, which leads me to believe that people spoke a language only vaguely resembling modern English in 1934:

Nick and Nora Charles cordially invite you to bring your own alibi to “The Thin Man,” the jaunty whodunit that made William Powell and Myrna Loy the champagne elite of sleuthing. Bantering in the doudoir, enjoying walks with beloved dog Asta or matching each other highball for highball and clue for clue, they combined screwball romance with mystery.

Well, it looks like Johnny Depp will get to play an entirely new type of off-kilter fop in this one. Get excited? (Coming Soon)
