'Enlightened' may be canceled but Mike White is not slowing up.

Earlier this week, I was dismayed to find out that Enlightened would not be returning to HBO for a third season. As the sole fan of that show, I wanted badly to see what was still in store for Amy Jellicoe and her crusade. Good to know that creator Mike White isn’t letting the bad news effect his getting back in the game.

Dreamworks has brought on White to adapt a new project from Silver Linings Playbook author Matthew Quick. Snatched up by the studio while still in manuscript form, The Good Luck Of Right Now focuses on the unlikely family formed by grief-stricken strangers. White is reportedly thrilled to be making another project in his ongoing I’m Going To Make You Cry series.
She's just signed on for her third film with him.

Jennifer Lawrence is turning into a regular Mark Wahlberg. After garnering critical acclaim and a sweet Oscar nom for her work in Silver Linings Playbook, the girl who plays The Girl On Fire has now signed on for yet another David O. Russell film.

In addition to last week’s news that Lawrence will also star in the previously-titled American Bullshit opposite fellow Russell Get-a-Long Gang Members Bradley Cooper and Christian Bale, The Hollywood Reporter reports Hollywoodily that the actress and director will also work together on The Ends Of The Earth. The film is based on the true story of an oil tycoon who looses all of his fancy belongings (nice boots and cattle skulls probably) after he is caught in an affair.

Too bad that George Clooney punched Russell in the face on the set of Three Kings. This film would be the step in the right direction to getting an oil-centric trilogy out of those two.

2012 was a great year for the arthouse scene.

It seems like most films these days are considered indie to some degree, with more and more popular faces doing “smaller” pictures. That’s not to say there are no films being created by outsiders that go on to strike a chord with viewers through unlikely casting and challenging themes. In fact, 2012 saw quality films from both sides of the aisle — making it a great year for arthouses and bold experimentation in storytelling.

Tim Heidecker – Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie & The Comedy

Tim Heidecker made a big impact in the indie film world this year with two very different films. Early in 2012, he co-wrote/co-directed/co-starred in Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie alongside Eric Wareheim. But it was The Comedy that finally ingratiated him to critics. In the Rick Alverson film, Heidecker plays an aging hipster who grows tired of his trust fund safety bubble and decides to test the limits of socially acceptable behavior. To say more would be to say too much, but it’s a tough film that sticks with you.

Mike Birbiglia & Seth Barrish – Sleepwalk With Me

Mike Birbiglia adapted his popular stage show for the big screen this past summer, raking in rave reviews.

David O. Russell – Silver Linings Playbook

Directed by Oscar favorite David O. Russell and starring a few of the biggest actors in Hollywood, Silver Linings Playbook is truly the little film that could.

Benh Zeitlin – Beasts Of The Southern Wild

Director Benh Zeitlin cast a bakery employee and a six-year old first-time actress for his debut feature. You can’t get more indie than that without dressing Parker Posey in clothes that match the wallpaper behind her.

Zal Batmanglij – Sound Of My Voice

Besides having one of the best last names on the planet, Zal Batmanglij made a splash with his first feature, The Sound Of My Voice. It didn’t hurt to have longtime collaborator and indie darling Brit Marling on board. But I like to think she agreed to do it because of his last name.

Jake Schreier – Robot & Frank

Of all the indie films to make an impact this year, this is the only one that features a robot which is awesome in its own right. But this film isn’t one to rest solely on the awesome laurels of featuring a robot. Instead, the film deals with the idea of adapting to technological change at an old age while also shining a light on the death of print culture in favor of digital media. And there are also jewel heists which are awesome as well.

The Silver Linings Playbook. Mark Wahlberg is out, and Bradley Cooper may be back in.

Last year, Cooper was attached to the lead role of a former teacher who moves in with his mom after being institutionalized for depression, but was cast aside when director David O. Russell‘s best guy, Mark Wahlberg, showed interest. Wahlberg, however, now has to bow out due to a scheduling conflict. So, now Cooper is back and things are going to be awkwaaaard at the table read.

Robert De Niro, whose trailer accidentally fused to Cooper’s on the set of Limitless, will continue his recent trend of going only where Cooper goes. He’s currently in talks for an undisclosed role. Jennifer Lawrence will also star as a young woman who jumps from bed to bed after the death of her husband. That’s every ghost’s nightmare. (Deadline)

In the film, Wahlberg plays a man looking for the silver linings in his life after checking out of a mental health facility. The highly-coveted role that these actresses are up for is that of a depressed woman who just bangs dudes like crazy after her husband passes. In other words, up yours, Mark Wahlberg.

Russell has had a pretty good year, thanks to his mostly-acclaimed boxing drama The Fighter. And now it seems he’s having trouble deciding what to tackle next, if this article from The Playlist is to be believed. It lists approximately 8 billion possible next steps for Russell, including but not limited to:

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune – An adaptation of the popular video game.

The Silver Linings Playbook – A comedy/drama possibly starring Anne Hathaway and Bradley Cooper.

2 Guns - A comedic actioner with Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn.

Cocaine Cowboys - Based on a documentary of the same name about a drug dealer from New York who moves to Miami.

Old St. Louis - A comedy in the same vein as Paper Moon starring Vince Vaughn.

Whew. This is not even mentioning all the projects he’s been attached to and isn’t any longer. Or the untitled Ice Cube “Dirty Harry-like” project. Take some time off, Dave! Who do you think you are? James Franco?
