Shawn Ryan To Take His Grit And Whatnot To HBO

The man behind The Shield, The Chicago Code, and Terriers has laid his weary head down at HBO, a place where no one would ever, EVER accuse the man of creating work that’s too gritty or true-to-life. Shawn Ryan will roll out the show Badlands, a study of a Wyoming town that has fallen on economic hard times, as well as probably a bunch of other different types of hard times as well. Like criminal or romantic or what have you.

Fans of Ryan will be delighted to know that on HBO he will be free to interject all the violence and profanity that he feels he should have in his earlier network shows. Then they’ll get less delighted when they realize that it’s about economic hard times and not corrupt cops blowing each other up with grenades.

‘The Shield’ Alums Chiklis And Goggins Find Some Work

If you’re pursuing an acting career, think long and hard about at least an internship with The Shield’s Strike Team, as it seems to offer a wonderful springboard into high-profile acting gigs for its graduates.

Deadline reports that Michael Chiklis will be taking his brand of “stocky and bald” to Taylor Hackford‘s Parker, playing the villain opposite Jason Statham‘s hero. Two bald men enter, but only one will leave…

Walton Goggins, who has made a fair amount of noise as the ambivalent Boyd Crowder on Justified, will be taking his homespun southern mannerisms and batshit crazy hair to Spielberg’s Lincoln, where he will play Ohio (not southern, I know) Congressman Wells A. Hutchins, a rep who champions the abolishment of slavery. Nice work there, Boyd. This role comes on the heels of this summers Cowboys and Aliens and the Straw Dogs remake. This guy just loves all things southern! And who can blame him? It’s a wonderful cardinal direction!

‘The Walking Dead’ Is Going To Need Writers After All

Anyone concerned that’The Walking Dead‘s” second season would be completely improvised can breathe a sigh of relief. No undead zip-zap-zow for you.

After cutting the entire season one staff with the intention of bringing in freelancers, Frank Darabont has switched up his game plan.

“The Shield‘s” Glen Mazzara has been swarn in as Darabont’s deputy. The show order jumped up from season one’s six episodes to thirteen. With that in mind, six additional writers will be hired to figure out awesome ways to kill zombies with a crossbow.

No word yet on what direction the new season will head in what new characters will be introduced. There have been rumblings that the camp will stumble upon Hershel’s farm. If that’s the case, let’s go ahead and advise Michael Gross to start growing a beard. (Deadline)

‘Shield’ Creator Shawn Ryan to Take On Tom Clancy’s ‘Without Remorse’

"The Shield" creator Shawn Ryan has been hired to turn Tom Clancy‘s best-seller Without Remorse into kick-ass script for Paramount. Star Trek writer-producers, and J.J. Abrams‘s BFFs, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are producing. Vulture shoops with the scoop:

The book follows one of Clancy’s recurring characters, John Kelly (who later assumes the alias of John Clark, and appears in the Jack Ryan novels like Patriot Games and Rainbow Six), as he seeks revenge against the Baltimore drug ring responsible for the death of his girlfriend. While the book is set in the 1970s during the Vietnam War, insiders tell us there’s no definitive plan to make the film a "period" piece.

The thought of Shawn Ryan writing the story of a man seeking revenge against a drug ring stimulates my pleasure centers. "The Shield" is one of my favorite shows of all time. If Without Remorse captures the same tone with characters as rich and compelling as Vic Mackey and his Strike Team then I’d say Paramount has a successful franchise on its hands. Just don’t get Walton Goggins to play the role of the hick, if there even is one. Dude needs to branch out. "President" has a nice ring to it.
