Amber Heard goes early-gonzo alongside Hunter S. disciple Johnny Depp in the The Rum Diary. She seems to have a thing for pieces set in the early 60s, having recently starred in the now-cancelled series “The Playboy Club.” On an unrelated note, Heard will appear in the film Syrup, based on Max Berry’s novel of the same name, next year.

The Rum Diary is allegedly a novel, not a biography. Whatever. All we’re saying is that it stars Johnny Depp as a wandering freelance journalist who can’t put enough substances in his body. Sounds close enough for jazz to us.

There’s something about seeing the true-life story, or the semi-true-life story, of a legit badass like Hunter S. Thompson on the big screen that appeals to people. Unlike a fictional account, you can actually find something to aspire to, or at least have fantasies about a cool new drinking buddy.

With that in mind, here are seven badass biographical and semi-biographical films.

Der Baader Meinhof Komplex

What could be sexier than a bunch of German communist terrorists who dress like the Velvet Underground? This movie doesn’t white wash terrorism, but it sure does provide it with a glamorous edge during the first two acts. Watch as chic Germans smoke cigarettes, wear sunglasses, steal cars and blow up American army installations. You can get a history lesson while you watch this and it’s one action film your girl won’t mind watching with you in the least.

Boogie Nights

No, Dirk Diggler is not a real guy. He is, however, loosely based on John Holmes, AKA Johnny Wadd, with many scenes, such as the classic interaction with the Ric Springfield-loving crack dealer, lifted directly from his life. This film ages like a fine wine, with classic interactions and one-liners like “You know, people tell me I kind of look like Han Solo.” We were as surprised as anyone else when we found out Marky Mark could act.

Johnny Depp‘s second, less psychedelic go as Hunter S. Thompson looks like a good time. Though he’s not technically the gonzo journalist (here his character is name Paul Kemp), The Rum Diary has been adapted from Thompson’s “lost” novel. The trailer begins as Kemp awakes in Puerto Rico after a bender. There he gets set up with some rustic accommodations, a reporting gig, 161 miniature bottles of booze, and gets to frolic with Amber Heard at her most seductive. In closing, Puerto Rico is awesome and I’m moving there. And if they don’t have the Internet, it’s been real, y’all.

Johnny Depp’s Second Hunter S. Thompson Movie Has A Release Date

Actor Johnny Depp famously portrayed Hunter S. Thompson during back-to-back-to-back-to-back (etc.) acid trips in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. But he wasn’t just playing a part – he apparently became good friends with his subject, who showed him the unpublished manuscript for his novel “The Rum Diary.” And Depp, being insane, up and made this into a movie. Now, that movie is getting released later this year on October 28th by FilmDistrict. The movie is directed by Bruce Robinson and stars Aaron Eckhart, Amber Heard, Michael Rispoli, Richard Jenkins and Giovanni Ribisi. Here’s what it’s all about:

“‘The Rum Diary’ tells the increasingly unhinged story of itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Depp). Tired of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local San Juan newspaper run by the downtrodden editor Lotterman (Jenkins). Adopting the rum-soaked lifestyle of the late ‘50s version of Hemingway’s ‘The Lost Generation, Paul soon becomes entangled with a very attractive American woman, Chenault (Heard) and her fiancée Sanderson (Eckhart), a businessman involved in shady property development deals. It is within this world that Kemp ultimately discovers his true voice as a writer and integrity as a man.”

So it’s not a sequel or anything, but Depp is playing ANOTHER character based on Hunter S. Thompson. No matter what, it’s probably better than The Tourist. (via Deadline)
