They're crazy, but they always get their man.

The crazy cop duo is a staple of modern cinema. For some reason, audiences flock to movies about two mismatched police officers almost as enthusiastically as to movies about real and/or animated penguins. If you’re a crazy cop pairing fan, you’ll love these seven. Enjoy – and one more screw-up like this and you’re off the case!

Jack Cates and Reggie Hammond, 48 Hrs.

It all began here. And by “it” I mean “the buddy cop genre,” not “Nick Nolte‘s gradual slide into insanity.” The basic premise here is that grizzled police detective Cates (Nick Nolte) has to team up with wisecracking small-time criminal Hammond (Eddie Murphy) to catch The Bad Guy. The crazy part of this duo comes from the fact that not only is Nick Nolte a really obvious racist, but he seems to hate most white people too. The perpetually apoplectic Nolte and the laid-back wise-ass Murphy are a match made in crazy cop heaven, if such a place exists.

Joe Friday and Pep Streebek, Dragnet

Dan Aykroyd is the fast-talking by-the-books police officer Joe Friday. Tom Hanks is the hilariously-named Pep Streebek, one of these new kind of cops who doesn’t keep his car clean. Together they fight over things like hair, wardrobe, and chilli dogs. But eventually they end up forming a friendship, and taking down the evil Christopher Plummer in the process. Hooray for crazy cop duos who eventually learn to respect each other and save the day!

In honor of the DVD release of The Other Guys, a film that hilariously mismatches Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, we've compiled this list the of 9 most awkward crime-fighting partners in movie history.

When it comes to crime-fighting partnerships, you probably think of Batman and Robin, Starsky and Hutch, Holmes and Watson, etc. You don’t often think of a hard-boiled private detective and a cartoon rabbit, or a regular cop paired with an intergalactic refugee. But in Hollywood, where every idea, no matter how bizarre, will eventually be produced as a major motion picture, these pairings have already occurred. In honor of the release of The Other Guys on Unrated Blu-ray and DVD, we’ve compiled this list of the 9 most awkward crime-fighting partners in movie history.

Eddie Valiant and Roger Rabbit – Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)

Eddie Valiant is a hard-nosed, borderline alcoholic private detective who hates cartoons. He blames them for the death of his brother, who was killed by at unknown toon years earlier. So when he finds himsel fighting to clear the name of a cartoon rabbit, things get pretty awkward, pretty fast. Not only is Roger Rabbit’s life at stake, but the fate of Toontown itself also hangs in the balance. For those of you who don’t live in the L.A. area, Toontown is a neighborhood near Hollywood where all the cartoons used to live. It’s since been overrun with Armenians.

Jack Quinn and Yaz – Double Team (1997)

When it comes to pairing celebrities in film, at least one member of the duo should have some acting talent. That way, they can make up for the other’s poor performance. Maybe that’s why Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dennis Rodman are so damn awkward in Double Team. Van Damme plays a counter-terrorism agent, and Rodman plays a drug dealer, but neither of one can act their way out of a paper bag. Granted, I doubt many people went to Double Team to see an Oscar-winning performance, but even so.

Julius and Vincent Benedict – Twins (1988)

Danny Devito and Arnold Schwarzenegger are a pretty awkward pair on their own. But casting them as fraternal twins takes it to a whole new level. While the two don’t start out as crime fighters, circumstances force them to take on a pair of loan shar brothers and a ruthless hitman, so they earned a spot on this prestigious list.

Nick McKenna and Devon Butler – Cop and a Half (1993)

Partnering a grown man with a child is awkward. But partnering a child with a grown man who also has a mustache is downright irresponsible. I know the character’s a cop, but even so, that molester ‘stache is a big red flag. I’m sure Burt Reynolds doesn’t go in for that sort of thing, but the film could lull parents into a false sense of security. The next thing you know, they’ve let their guard down, and the kids are at Jeffrey Jones’s house for another sleepover. Awkward.

Matthew Sykes and Samuel ‘George’ Francisco – Alien Nation (1988)

Alien Nation is a lot like District 9 in the sense that an alien ship becomes stranded on Earth, and humanity has to figure out what to do with the passengers. But unlike District 9, the aliens of Alien Nation are not put in a camp and quarantined. Instead, they are put into a ghetto, just like regular immigrants. Detective Matthews Sykes isn’t big fan of the newcomers, but he teams up with one anyway because it gives him the chance he needs to investigate the murder of his former partner. The two don’t really hit it off, but eventually they learn to respect each other. I guess it’s sort of like The Odd Couple, except with aliens and homicide.

Terry Hoitz and Allen Gamble – The Other Guys (2010)

When you think of action-movie cops, The Rock and Samuel L. Jackson seem like a good pair. But when the characters played by these two are killed off, you’ll have to settle for The Other Guys. Detective Allen Gamble (Will Ferrell) is more interested in pushing paper than pursuing perps, and Detective Terry Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg) is a deranged cop who once shot Derek Jeter during the World Series. Together, they’ll have to unravel a multimillion-dollar conspiracy, and hope that the department will forget the whole “desk pop” thing and allow Gamble to carry his weapon again (instead of a wooden replacement).

Sgt. Joe Bomowski and Tutti Bomowski – Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot (1992)

So get this! We take Sylvester Stallone and have him play a big tough-guy cop. But we partner him up with…his mom! Crazy, right? I mean, old ladies don’t carry big guns around, so it will be really funny! She’ll be all like, “Honey, be careful, you should eat more,” and stuff, and he’ll be all like “Mom, I’m trying to catch bad guys here.” And then she’ll be like, “I can help,” and he’ll be all like, “Aw mom, no!”

Jake Wilder and Reno – Top Dog (1995)

What could be more awkward than teaming the most powerful man in the world (according to the Internet) with a lovable family pet? Throwing the pair into a plot involving White Supremacists, I suppose. And Top Dog did just that. When an apartment complex full of minorities is destroyed by military-grade explosives, they put Chuck Norris (Jake Wilder) and a dog named Reno on the case. I would have thought the FBI would get involved in something like that, but instead it’s left to a local cop and a dog he doesn’t get along with. Now that’s what I call an awkward partnership.

Dr. Maxwell Kirshner and Jack Moss - The Thing with Two Heads (1972)

Pairing up an old white racist with a black death-row inmate is an awkward concept. Fusing both of their heads onto the same body is a surreal nightmare of racial stereotypes and Hollywood cliches. The old white dude needs a body to stay alive, and the young black “soul brother” needs an excuse to stay out of the electric chair long enough to clear his name. And everyone needs to see this trailer at least once before they die.

Cast: Will Farrell, Mark Wahlberg, Micheal Keaton, Steve Coogan, Eva Mendes, Ray Stevenson, Damon Waynes Jr., Rob Riggle with Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson
Directed by Adam McKay
Screening Adam McKay and Chris Henchy

After a painful and teeth pulling summer of failed action movies and lazy comedies, The Other Guys saves the season, busting on the scene as the funniest and funky freshest action comedy to come from the Adam McKay/Will Farrell powerhouse since Anchorman.

More after the jump…

The duo threw every movie parody and tough guy comic sketch at the wall and saw what stuck. They succeed in almost every scene, whether it’s bullets flying or mouths spouting off-one liners, and by the end of summer most of us will know what a "soup kitchen" is, and we’ll think twice before parking our cars on the street ever again.

Oh but wait! The plot. Without giving away too many surprises – there are few up this movie’s sleeve that haven’t been ruined by reviews or added Internet features – an unaccredited narrator, Ice-T, tells us about the gritty streets of New York City and how they are run by super police force duo Highsmith and Danson (Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson).

When Highsmith and Danson are put into ‘early retirement’, it’s time for odd couple partners Det. Holtz and Gamble (Mark Walhberg doing some of his best work since The Departed and Will Farrell surpressing his man-child with a more straight-laced approach) to step up to the plate and protect the city from white collar criminal, Wall Street sleaze Ernson (Steve Coogan doing what he does best by annoying people with his bad decisions).

Director Adam McKay, with the script from himself and sketch comic vet Chris Henchy, and all of its cast’s improv humor works so well this time. The characters and their terrible behavior work together, Wahlberg and Farrell bring a high level energy with an all-star supporting cast that includes Micheal Keaton, Eva Mendes, Ray Stevenson, Lindsay Sloane, Damon Waynes Jr., Rob Riggle, and of course Jackson/Johnson duo. Everyone seems to be having a fun time playing with action and comedy that is set in front of them.

The gags and scenes that work the most range from a hilarious boozing bar montage, Wahlberg shooting a famous somebody, a car chase that involves every sort of world gangster, and Keaton’s subconscious quoting of hip-hop group TLC.

It’s great to see Keaton playing it for laughs again, not since Night Shift and Beetlejuice has he had the chance to be this funny and quick-witted.

With this movie, Hot Fuzz and Cop Out coming out within a few years of each other, we can see that the buddying action flick is back with more referential revenge than before.

The Other Guys gives us what we like in a summer movie and let’s us go home with a few good one liners to remember it by.

If you see one buddy comedy or cop movie this year give The Other Guys a shot.

Grade: B+

It seems a little convenient that the Eva Mendes sex tape just happened to hit the internet the very week her film The Other Guys opens in theaters. I feel like she's been keeping this one in her pocket for awhile now and the big guns at Sony persuaded (forced) her to release it on the world. We've all demanded it for years, and now it's finally here. Enjoy, Internet.

A teaser for The Other Guys hit ShoWest last week and now Yahoo has officially released it to people who aren't allowed back in Vegas, deeming it a "motion poster." Call me old fashioned, but I like a play and pause button on my media. Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell sliding across screen like a couple of bad ass cops is a damn fine thing to witness so enjoy the autoplay and autorepeat. Don't you DARE close that window until it's cycled at least 10 times. Check out the fancy, shmancy motion poster after the jump.

Someone at ShoWest snagged some footage of the new Adam McKay directed comedy the Other Guys starring Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell. Sure, Wahlberg is playing another ramrod cop, but don’t fix it if it ain’t broke, yaknowwhatI’msayin’? As long as he doesn’t do the whole man-child act again, I’ll sit in another darkened theater with him. Here’s some context for all you brainiacs:

The Other Guys follows Detective Allen Gamble (Ferrell), a forensic accountant who’s more interested in paperwork than hitting the streets, and Detective Terry Hoitz (Marky Mark), a tough guy who has been stuck with Allen as his partner ever since an unfortunate run-in with Derek Jeter. Allen and Terry idolize the city’s top cops, Danson and Highsmith (Dwayne Johnson and Sam Jackson), but when an opportunity arises for the Other Guys to step up, things don’t quite go as planned.
