Take your Oscar noms and stuff it.

The Master isn’t burning up the box office but it is garnering a lot of praise for Joaquin Phoenix, with many talking Oscar. However, Phoenix isn’t having that talk. In his usual firebrand fashion, he’s stated that the Academy Awaqrds are “total utter bullshit.” Well said!

Phoenix, who has avoided any press tour or politicking for The Master, now tells Interview magazine.

“Have you ever smoked a dog’s skeleton? Exhilarating.”

Oops. That’s actually not from Interview. That’s his outgoing voicemail. Here’s the actual quote.

“I’m just saying that I think it’s bullshit. I think it’s total, utter bullshit, and I don’t want to be a part of it. I don’t believe in it. It’s a carrot, but it’s the worst-tasting carrot I’ve ever tasted in my whole life. I don’t want this carrot. It’s totally subjective. Pitting people against each other…It’s the stupidest thing in the whole world,” he says. “It was one of the most uncomfortable periods of my life when Walk the Line was going through all the awards stuff and all that. I never want to have that experience again. I don’t know how to explain it—and it’s not like I’m in this place where I think I’m just above it—but I just don’t ever want to get comfortable with that part of things.”

Fair enough. Phoenix has been around long enough to play by his own rules and with two nominations under his belt, he has a suitable amount of perspective to inform his decision. Plus, once you have a guy poop on you, awards and superlatives really lose their luster. It changes a man.

Plus two more people are in it.

For the past few weeks, you’ve been reading various entertainment news outlets clumsily referring to director Paul Thomas Anderson’s Scientology movie as”Paul Thomas Anderson’s Scientology movie,” “Paul Thomas Anderson’s formerly titled The Master project,” “Paul Thomas Anderson’s strike for Xenu’s forces,” etc. Well, friends, that dark period of our nation’s history is finally over, as the movie is now back to officially being titled The Master.

7 photosAmy Adams

Now that that’s out of the way, I can report that The Master (ah, that feels good) has added two new actors to its cast: Josh Close and Fiona Dourif. Josh Close is said to be playing one of lead Philip Seymour Hoffman’s character’s disciples. Fiona Dourif (daughter of actor Brad Dourif), is playing an undisclosed part. They’re both also joining Amy Adams and Joaquin Phoenix in the movie.

The good news here is that when Close and Dourif call up their parents to tell them the good news, they can just say they’re in The Master, not “the Scientology movie” or whatever. Just The Master. (Variety)

Another tragically lost soul.

You might remember reading about Paul Thomas Anderson’s untitled Scientology movie (formerly called The Master) casting a lot of people recently, including Amy Adams, Lena Endre, Laura Dern, and Rami Malek. Now, yet another actor with a dangerously high Thetan count has been added to the cast: From The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Madisen Beaty.

7 photosAmy Adams

Beaty was previously rumored to be attached to the project, but the character she’ll be playing is still unclear. The movie also stars Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix, here’s a brief plot synopsis, which you can trust because it wasn’t written by a pill-addled science fiction writer:

“Hoffman stars as a man who returns after witnessing the horrors of WWII and tries to rediscover who he is in post-war America. He creates a belief system, something that catches on with other lost souls.”

Man, I should start a belief system. Lot of money in that. (The Film Stage)

'The Pacific' actor has been indoctrinated and thetan-scanned into Anderson's new Scientology-based movie.

The potentially-Scientology bashing movie from Paul Thomas Anderson sounds very intriguing. So far, the cast of the movie formerly known as The Master includes Philip Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix, Laura Dern and Amy Adams. Now, another actor has been indoctrinated and thetan-scanned.

7 photosAmy Adams

Rami Malek (HBO’s”The Pacific“) has signed on to play Hoffman’s son-in-law in the film. Hoffman is the “prophet” behind the kooky cult. This gig comes to Malek after getting thoroughly Twilighted in Breaking Dawn, which just recently wrapped shooting. Filming begins on the untitled religious drama this month.

She'll play Phillip Seymour Hoffman's wife. Only in Hollywood!!!!

Before signing up to play Lois Lane in Zach Snyder’s Man of Steel, Amy Adams is setting some time aside to appear in a good film. She has been cast in Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master to play the wife of Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s “Master,” a character who goes by the name of Lancaster Dodd. This announcement follows yesterday’s news that Jesse Plemons, David Warshofsky, and Laura Dern were cast.

The role was originally offered to Reese Witherspoon last year, but when production ground to a halt when everyone in Hollywood realized that they were biting the hand that feeds them with the thinly-veiled treatment of Scientology. As such, the project went away, and so did Witherspoon.

It’ unknown exactly how much this project’s subject matter parallels the story of L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology and how critical of the topic it is, especially after a possible rewrite late last year before mega-badass Megan Ellison saved the project, but it’s safe to say that any story about Scientology is sure to raise a few eyebrows in Hollywood. You know, due to all those freaky Scientologists.

Production on the film starts on June 13th.

There’s news today that Jesse Plemons “Friday Night Lights“) and David Warshofsky (There Will Be Blood) have joined the cast as characters who may or may not be bludgeoned with a bowling pin.
Plemons will play the son of Philip Seymour Hoffman‘s cult leader and Warshofsky will play a detective in the Scientology-skewering film.

Director of the upcoming Scientology movie The Master Paul Thomas Anderson isn’t the only one to benefit from billionaire heiress Megan Ellison‘s good taste in movies. Now another beloved auteur is getting in on that sweet action, since she’s picked up the North American distribution rights for Wong Kar Wai’s movie about famed martial arts master and trainer of Bruce Lee Ip Man called The Grandmasters (through her production company Annapurna Productions). This isn’t the first movie to be made about Ip Man, as there’s already been an Ip Man and Ip Man 2 to come out of Hong Kong. But Wong Kar Wai is a great director, so I’m excited about this even though it’s not brand-new subject matter. And apparently Megan Ellison feels the same way I do, ergo, she has good taste in movies. Maybe as a lover of film she’ll fund my project to pay for Hulu Plus next. (/Film)

Billionaire heiresses. When they’re not spending daddy’s money on blinged-out diamond collars for their tiny mutant dogs, they’re recording sex tapes and becoming national heroes. That’s why it’s nice to hear about one heiress who’s doing something legitimately cool. Of course, I know next to nothing about 25-year-old Megan Ellison, billionaire daughter of Oracle CEO Larry Ellison. She might be recording a sex tape as we speak. However, we know she’s at least actively trying to make good contributions to the movie world by financing two projects from writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood).

Ellison, a listed producer on True Grit, is giving Anderson several sacks of money to help make:

The Master, which is about the formation of a Scientology-eque religicult, and Philip Seymour Hoffman is interested in a lead role. Paramount ultimately passed on the movie last year, but now it looks like the project’s thetans are aligning once more.

Inherent Vice, based on a novel by reclusive author Thomas Pinchon, is a psychedelic, late-60′s detective story. Anderson is part-way through the script, and Robert Downey Jr. is interested in a lead role. Of course he is. If your movie doesn’t star Robert Downey Jr., Johnny Depp or James Franco, you’re obviously doing something wrong.

Armed with a gigantic novelty check from Oracle, hopefully Anderson can now make these cool-sounding movies. I’m glad that Ellison wants to produce good movies, rather than star in abominable ones, like some heiresses. (/Film)

Look what you're doing to Paul!!!
Jeremy Renner just gave us all one ticket to Bummersville. The actor recently revealed to Total Film that Paul Thomas Anderson's in the works scientology drama tentatively titled The Master has come to a grinding halt:

"I was really bummer about that," Renner revealed. "It really kind of stalled because when we were rehearsing - Phil, Paul and myself - we kept coming up against a wall that we couldn't overcome. Or at least Paul couldn't.
I'm sure he didn't mean for that to sound like a burn, but what a buuuuuuuurn. Jeremy could overcome it, Paul? Why the hell couldn't you?
At the press junket for Jack Goes Boating, Philip Seymour Hoffman also confirmed that the project is currently whack:
"I don't have any new information ['The Master']. I really mean that, I'm not being obstuse. I don't quite know what that is at the moment, but hopefully I will and hopefully I'll be part of something soon. It would be great to work with him again."
I was really looking forward to Anderson's take on The Cause -- his made up word for Scientology -- and Hoffman portraying a version of L. Ron Hubbard, the author of the classic novel Battlefield Earth. Everyone keep your fingers crossed so tightly that they bleed. It's the only way this project may get back on track.
