If anyone thought that politics made Arnold Schwarzenegger soft…yeah, maybe. But private live in Brentwood has brought the action-film icon back to his old self, if this trailer is to be believed.

And why wouldn’t you believe a red-band trailer?

The film comes from South Korean director Kim Ji-woon, who scared the bejesus out of us with I Saw the Devil, so those who are quick to dismiss this film as mindless action might want to take in a screening of that before being so quick to judge.

But before you go to your local video store (HA!), check out the trailer for The Last Stand.

There’s a new trailer for Arnold Schwarzenegger’s The Last Stand that focuses more on the quirky, comedic aspects of the movie. More specifically, it focuses on Johnny Knoxville acting like a major tardball. It begs the question: is this character supposed to be a developmentally-disabled adult? Let’s take a closer look.

First of all, the guy’s a fashion nightmare. Who wears a bathrobe outside of the home paired with pilot googles and a Trapper’s hat? By Hollywood standards, that style of dress makes a character either mentally-handicapped or a quirky Asian. And we can all clearly see this character is not Asian because he does not show off any karate skills. Secondly, he makes whooping noises and sticks his tongue out a lot. He’s essentially Arnie Grape with a flare gun. In which case, did Knoxville learn nothing from The Ringer?

Not that there’s anything wrong with a mentally-handicapped adult squaring off against a border-crossing psychopath. In fact, that’s a movie I’d really like to see. I just wish they’d play up that aspect in the marketing so I’m not left guessing.

You do realize that Bruce Willis can’t be in every movie about old guys kicking ass who pepper said ass-kickings with quips about advanced age, don’t you? Luckily, Arnold Schwarzenegger has nobly stepped up to fill the gap. What would we do without Arnold?

If it weren’t for his eligible-for-retirement but still handy with a gatlin gun Southern sheriff, the Cartel could take over America. Thank you again for your service to this country, Mr. Schwarzenegger.

UPDATE: Variety has reported that Arnold also has his eye on the Antoine Fuqua‘s The Tomb. This project would have Schwarzenegger cast as a prisoner in a high-security prison…THAT HE DESIGNED! Don’t get your hopes up, though, as there exist a few scheduling issues with this one.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has all the hallmarks of a loner border sherrif: Funny accent, general distrust of immigrants, and a steadfast track record of sticking to his beliefs even when they’re totally wrong.

So it’s no wonder that he is close to inking a deal to star in Kim Ji-Woon’s The Last Stand, in which he will stop a drug trafficker in a sweet ride from crossing the border into Mexico. Liam Neeson was attached to the project for months, but it’s pretty ridiculous to think of Liam Neeson as a border sheriff. That wouldn’t make any sense at all!

Apparently the producers are awaiting Arnie’s camp to counter some minor negotiation points. While details are vague, this sounds like less of a shoot-em-up film than it does something of plot-driven film, which makes sense given his age.

Next up: Tom Arnold starts rumors that he’s circling a role as a Mexican mayor. (/Film)
