The Host is back with another trailer to remind us that sci-fi nerd Andrew Niccol can get mushy too. But not if that means he has to sacrifice including sleek, futuristic cars. There’s only one proper way to direct an Andrew Niccol film and that’s by adding cool cars. And helicopters fighting trucks.

Based on Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight follow-up, The Host trades sparkling skin for bizarro eyes and Kristen Stewart for an actress you don’t want to kick down a flight of stairs. When Earth is invaded by an advanced race of brain parasites, there are only a small number of sexy teens left to fight for the fate of mankind. Damn those brain slugs and their technological advancements and betterment of society. They won’t get away with that!

Don’t worry Twihards. Though your beloved film series is coming to an end, a new film is available from the brain of Stephanie Meyer. The premise of The Host is simple. It’s the future. Just about everyone has been body-snatched except for a small number of survivors. When the aliens close in on two characters from a Nicholas Sparks novel, the girl sacrifices herself. However, her strong will is able to resist the alien inside of her. Will the rebels and her boyfriend accept that? He had better. There’s a severe drought of hot tail in post-body snatcher America.

There’s no word yet if the young stars are an actual couple in real life or not, but I’m sure we’ll hear about it if they start banging.

Although most therapists agree that your inner child needs to be nurtured and respected, sometimes you just want to scare the shit out of it instead. If this applies to you, maybe give some of these movies a shot. That should keep the little bastard quiet for a while, huh? Super 8

Movies with children in peril tend to be pretty scary to kids, obviously because they see themselves in the middle of the action. And the action in Super 8 is as terrifying as you can get without veering into R-rated, too-shocking-to-resonate territory (I guess you could subject your inner child to Irreversible or The Last House on the Left, but what’s the fun in that? In addition to being scared, your inner child might feel a bit empowered too, since most of the anti-alien-monster heroics in Super 8 are performed by children.

Nothing is scarier to children, inner or otherwise, than evil clowns. And It, based on the novel by Stephen King, features the king of the killer clowns. Pennywise, played by Tim Curry, has the power to transform himself into whatever his victims fear the most. And for much of the movie, his victims (and the protagonists of the story) are little kids. No matter how tough your inner child is, he or she won’t be feeling the urge to go to the circus any time soon.

‘The Host’ Has Found A Director (Again) In Andrew Niccol

Andrew Niccol loved The Host so much that he not only adapted the book into a screenplay, but now he’s directing the damn thing. The adaptation of Twilight scribe Stephanie Meyer’s follow-up novel has gotten traction with this news and last week’s announcement that Saoirse Ronan (Hanna) will be starring. The news of Niccol’s involvement at the helm comes after Susanna White, who was originally attached as the director, came and went from the project with little fanfare.

Niccol has a slightly more proven track record as a screenwriter than a director, but it was his work as both on the film Gattaca that led Meyer to feel comfortable lending her work to him for adaptation.

For those unfamiliar, The Host follows a girl named Melanie Stryder (Ronan) in a time when parasitic aliens invade human’s bodies, erasing their personalities and consciousness. However, Stryder proves to be more resistant in giving up fellow humans once she is “invaded,” inspiring the inhabitant soul to reconnect with elements of her old life, including her boyfriend (OMG!).

It helps to understand it if you’re an alienated 14 year-old that wishes they’d never been born. (Variety)

Saoirse Ronan’s Body About To Get Snatched

Author of the Twilight series Stephenie Meyer’s novel The Host is tailor-made for a filmed adaptation. In addition to her Twilight-bolstered value as a name-brand, the book has a nifty scifi hook, about aliens who steal people’s bodies and erase their personalities.

Now we know who’s going to play Melanie, the main character and leader of the human resistance against the body-snatchers (called “Souls,” but “body-snatcher” is way cooler and more accurate) – Hanna star Saoirse Ronan. She’s also playing “Wanderer,” who appears to be the chief body-snatcher, and who finds that Melanie doesn’t go as easy as her human compatriots do.

The script is by Andrew Niccol, famous for Gattaca and his script for The Truman Show. He originally wrote the script with an eye to direct, then dropped out, and is now back in as a possible director again. Maybe his erratic behavior can be explained by his being controlled by aliens. (Deadline)

Gee, Great: Stephanie Meyer’s Post-Twilight Adaptation Has A Director

In the first truly scary news to come out of the Twilight universe in quite some time, an adaptation of author Stephanie Meyer’s most recent work, The Host, now has a director attached to it. Susanna White, the seemingly schizophrenic helmer behind both”Generation Kill” and Nanny McPhee Returns, has been scooped up to help Meyer’s work reach mainstream audiences again.

The Host focuses on a (hopefully distant) time when humans bodies are infested by alien hosts. One of the few remaining intact humans, Melanie, is captured, but not so quick to relinquish her mind to her captors. While mining Melanie’s brain for strategic information, the aliens come across images of her real-life soulmate, etc, etc. Love conquers all. The end.

The book is being adapted for the screen by Andrew Niccol, who had limited success with Gattaca, and hopefully more with the upcoming Now. The Host sounds like the right mix of sap and action to gross a gazillion dollars, so while the story might not be inspired, it sounds like Meyer’s business acumen is. (Coming Soon)
