Michael Clarke Duncan, who gained an almost instant reputation in Hollywood as a menacing figure with a heart of gold, died of complications from a myocardial infarction he suffered last month. He was 54 years old.

Duncan’s career had tapered off in recent years, following an auspicious start that had him appearing in most every film made between 1998-2002, including, but certainly not limited to: The Green Mile, The Whole Nine Yards, Armageddon, and Planet of the Apes.

Despite his hulking presence, Duncan was known to be among the sweetest men in Hollywood, as evidenced throughout his career by regular appearances on the The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, in which the everyman could be seen telling homespun stories that seemed out of character coming from any Hollywood star, much less one of his intimidating size.
