That itchy feeling in the pit of your stomach is either a tumor or Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 shatterin the box office record for highest-grossing opening weekend ever, with an estimated $168.55 million. This beats the previous record holder, The Dark Knight, which made $158.4 million in its opening weekend.

In case you’re a little slow on the uptake, this also puts Deathly Hallows 2 in front of every other Harry Potter movie in the opening-weekend-gross department. Second place is, fittingly, Deathly Hallows Part 1, which in its opening weekend earned about $125 million.

Interestingly, the latest Harry Potter movie is ranked only 6th in terms of actual attendance numbers. An explanation for this discrepancy is a combination of inflation and the extra money that audience members pay to see the movie in 3D and/or in IMAX. Alternatively, it might be due to magic. First you saw a movie about Facebook, now you’ll be able to watch movies on Facebook! Warner Brothers has announced that they’re going to begin offering movies for rent and purchase on Facebook. Basically, by “liking” a movie being offered on Facebook, you’ll be able to rent it, which included exciting features such as pausing (wow!) and commenting (game-changer!). All of this, of course, will take place on your Facebook page.

The first movie being offered by the studio shows they aren’t interested in taking any chances – it’s the most financially successful movie in Warner Brothers history, Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight. Wait – didn’t everyone already see that? Anyway, the studio will presumably be rolling out more and more movies as time goes on. Perhaps next you’ll be able to check your Facebook on the big screen at the movie theater. (via /Film)
