How can you make a Beatles movie without permission from The Beatles?

Screenwriter Chris McCoy has been trying to get his screenplay Get Back published for a few years now. And it’s not very surprising that it hasn’t gotten made – he’s got a crackerjack premise, but how can you make a Beatles movie without permission from The Beatles? Here’s the premise, that isn’t likely to meet the approval of much of the owners of the Beatles estate (which include Yoko Ono):

“The film follows two die-hard Beatles fans who, like many die-hard Beatles fans, don’t hold a very warm place in their heart for Yoko Ono and blame her for breaking up the band. They find a way to travel back in time to prevent John Lennon from ever meeting Yoko and keeping the Fab Four together.”

Whoa. Anyway, Mark Waters, whose next movie is going to be Mr. Popper’s Penguins, is now set to make Get Back. Maybe the movie is actually about how John and Yoko were in love, and that it was actually no one’s fault that The Beatles broke up, and Yoko Ono is actually a talented multimedia artist and visionary in the field of loud screeching. Then we might actually hear “Get Back” in Get Back. (JoBlo)

(Tired concepts get tired jokes.)The Beatles are Hollywood's latest undead remix with the announcement that Double Feature has optioned Alan Goldsher's novel Paul Is Undead. The book tells the history of the undead band as they invade the world while evading zombie hunter Mick Jagger and Eighth Level Ninja Lord Yoko Ono. Racist much? I mean, just because Mick Jagger is British doesn't automatically make him a monster killing expert. It's stereotypes like that that hold us back as a people. (Deadline)
