Leatherface‘s return to the theater this weekend surpassed expectations by taking the number spot with a haul of $23 million. Which means, another sequel will soon be on the way.

The real story, however, is how well the film was attended by the ladies. The audience was 52 percent female and 64 percent under 25 year-of-age. Lionsgate is reporting that a third of those young girls stated that they were there to see singer Trey Songz try his hand at acting. Horror films are notoriously cheap to produce and when they hit with audiences, it leads to profits larger than anticipated. It only makes sense to revisit the franchise. There aren’t any plot details for the sequel yet but it will likely involve running and chainsaws and maybe Ne-Yo this time around. (Box Office Mojo)

Ignore all of those other massacres you’ve seen take place in Texas via chainsaw after the original. THIS is the only Texas Chainsaw Massacre sequel you need to worry about from a story perspective. The plot is simple: a large-boobed girl discovers she has a long-lost grandmother who has left her a mystery inheritance. So, she and her scantily-clad friends head to Texas to pick it up. But rather then riches or cool artwork, the inheritance is Leatherface. You can probably guess where the plot goes from there. Note: it goes in a radically different direction than Rain Man does.

Looks like Trey Songz intends to change his name to Trey Filmz. Which is bad news for Leatherface, who might have met his match in the R&B crooner/less-violent-version-of-Chris Brown in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D.

As the boyfriend to Alexis Daddario‘s lead character who finds herself the new owner of Leatherface, Songz will have to try to avoid taking a hammer to the head and deal with the pressures of being a psychopath’s step-daddy. Newcomer Dan Yeager has also joined the cast as the man behind the mask himself, Leatherface. Is he prepared for Songz’z sultry and silky-smooth scream, or will his knees buckle causing him to drop his chainsaw on himself? We’ll have to see. (Variety and THR)

The final piece is in place. Natasha Lyonne is officially returning for American Reunion. She’ll join other original castmates Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Tara Reid, Seann William Scott, Mena Suvari, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Jennifer Coolidge and Eugene Levy for the 2012 release. After a rough couple of years in Hollywood, Lyonne has agreed to do the role in return for any leftover pie. (Deadline)

I guess Joaquin Phoenix is all better now. He’s booked to star in Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman‘s untitled project. Plot details haven’t been revealed yet but it’s suspected the film is “a satire about how world leaders gather to figure out all the seismic events that will take place in the world, from oil prices to wars that will be waged.” Just like in real life. ‘Takers’ Director To Bring ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Into The Third Dimension

It would probably be bigger news if there wasn’t going to be a Texas Chainsaw Massacre installment in 3D, but, that said, hold on to your seats…there’s going to be a Texas Chainsaw Massacre installment in 3D.

Wanna know what it’s gonna be called? Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D. Has a nice ring to it.

The project will start production in June, according to Lionsgate, which also announced that Takers helmer John Luessenhop is in discussions to direct. As I mentioned, it’s no surprise that they’re going the 3D route with this one, as something about a chainsaw in the audience’s faces might make for a compelling theatergoing experience. I’m tired of watching Leatherface saw characters in half, wishing it was me that was up there getting buzzsawed in the sternum. While I will still end up walking out of the theater with my body intact, I will at least get to know the fear that these fictional characters experience as they look a painful, bloody death in the eye.
