They'd make such great parents.

Netflix is emerging as the savior of shows that Fox dicked over. First, they garnered undying comedy nerd love by striking an agreement to stream new episodes of Arrested Development. It now looks like the subscription service is looking to capitalize on Fox’s high-profile cancellation of Terra Nova. The science fiction series did okay in the ratings and has a solid fan base but it wasn’t the ratings behemoth Fox wanted. But it’s perfect for Netflix!

As of right now the talks are only preliminary. The show is very expensive to produce on account of dinosaurs being extinct and all, and who knows what Netflix can afford. I get the feeling that people may freak out if there’s another price hike.

Let’s make that 245 shows that have come and gone on Fox while The Simpsons has been on the air. Terra Nova is the latest casualty in Fox’s line-up. Though the science fiction series was successful in the ratings, it wasn’t the runaway hit that the network had expected. The Steven Spielberg and Peter Chernin produced series did well with international sales as well, which raised hope for a renewal. In the end, it just wasn’t the monster hit it needed to be.

The intention now is to shop the show around to other networks, so there is some hope for fans. I hope that it does find a home some place that can afford it. It’s an expensive series that never found its way creatively. That is to say, we hardly ever got to see dinosaurs eat anybody. This is your second chance. Make the dinosaurs terrifying and you’ll have a hit on your hands. (Deadline)

Saturday’s schedule for Comic-Con 2011 is posted and ready to be highlighted (here are Thursday and Friday).

In case you’re not inclined to read all that, the only real takeaway here is that Cee-Lo will be guest starring on”The Cleveland Show.” All the other info really just detracts from that fact.

Not only will Jason O’Mara have to worry about his kids being eaten by dinosaurs, but he’ll also have to deal with bad guys. Kind of gives the show the cool feeling that”The Walking Dead” has where the main character needs to maintain justice while dealing with this extreme survival situation. Also dinosaurs eat people on this show and that’s awesome 98% of the time (the Carnosaur films brought down the average).

According to FOX, it's not a drama unless there are crimes being committed or dinosaurs running around. I feel the same way.

FOX just released its fall additions in New York, and they’re looking pretty FOXified. Their dramas tend to be more character driven (“House,” “Bones,” “Lie To Me”) than plot-driven, and also tend to skew more science fiction than the other networks. We’ve got the standard supernatural mystery show (“Touch”), the requisite J.J. Abrams mystery (“Alcatraz“), the hackneyed good-detective-becomes-great-detective-after-getting-exploded-by-an-IED-in-Iraq (“The Finder”), and Avatar-lite (“Terra Nova“). So let’s take a look.

“Terra Nova”

The crown jewel of FOX’s fall schedule has been met with its share of both anticipation and skepticism. A family from 2149 gets sent back to prehistoric earth to save humanity (yeah, I think it sounds like Land of the Lost, too). While it certainly appears ambitious and grand, the thresholds for appearing that way on TV aren’t that high, which causes critics to wonder if the large budget will just lead to a very grand display of cheese from Steven Spielberg and Co.

“The Finder”

An Iraqi war veteran moves to Key West to work outside the law, solving people’s problems. It’s like The Hurt Locker meets Michael Clayton meets Ernest Hemingway. Except it’s a spinoff from “Bones,” so I think that’s probably where the Hemingway comparisons will stop. It does sound like there is a fair amount going on here, complete with co-stars Michael Clarke Duncan and Saffron Burrows. It sounds like this show may have been assembled by a focus group, which is always the best way to go about creating art.

“Alcatraz”

I could just say “this show is by J.J. Abrams” and leave it at that, but his shows haven’t proven to be such sure things. His ability to transcend fanboy adoration is no sure thing, so “Alcatraz” will be an interesting study. In “Alcatraz,” a detective follows the case of a grisly murder until it leads her to an Alcatraz inmate that died decades ago. Abrams will probably get around to telling us how that is possible in season 4.

“Touch”

(no clip available yet)
“Touch” is the most recent effort from “Heroes” adored-then-maligned creator Tm Kring. Well, if you liked “Heroes,” the plot of “Touch” will sound pretty familiar. A group of seemingly unrelated strangers affect each other in different ways, only to find that they’re all connected to each other in a mysterious way. Yeah, it’s pretty much “Heroes,” but with regular people. They should have called this “Regular People That Are Connected.”

Everyone hates summer. We’re forced out of our homes by reruns on TV, only to be assaulted by bright sunlight, abrasively green grass, and painfully hot sand. Thankfully, there’s an end in sight to the awful onslaught of summer, as evidenced by FOX’s fall schedule. Here is the darkness at the end of the painfully bright tunnel:

Monday: “Terra Nova,” the impressively ambitious show with dinosaurs or something at 8 PM, followed by “House” at 9 PM.

Tuesday: Some show called”Glee” at 8 PM, followed by the new “The New Girl” with Zooey Deschanel at 9, then “Raising Hope” at 9:30.

Wednesday: “The X-Factor,” which is different from “American Idol” in dozens of ways, starts at 8 PM. Then it’s “I Hate My Teenage Daughter” with Jamie Pressly at 9:30. That’s right, “The X-Factor” is on for an hour and a half.

Thursday: The evening starts at 8 PM with the results show of “The X-Factor,” which mercifully is only an hour long. Then after that it’s “Bones” at 9.

Friday: “Kitchen Nightmares” at 8 PM followed by”Fringe” at 9. That’s why it’s the most popular TV night of the week!

Saturday: “Cops” is inexplicably still on the air at 8 PM, followed by reruns and “occasional” “America’s Most Wanted” after that at 9.

Sunday: It’s Sunday night animation, starting whenever all that football stuff is over -”The Cleveland Show,”"The Simpsons,” a new show from Jonah Hill called “Allen Gregory,”"Family Guy,” and “American Dad.”

Well, there you have it. Keep this in mind as you struggle to make it through another punishing summer. And remember, you can always watch reruns.
The future looks simultaneously awesome and terrible.

This new look at Fox’s “Terra Nova” teaches us that though the characters live in a dystopian shit-pit where you need to wear dirty breathing masks and huddle together for warmth, the technology is still totally awesome. Look at that tablet! It’s totally transparent. That way everyone on the train will know that you’re secretly looking at photos of Blake Lively. Even their Stargates look cooler!!

Why would anyone want to leave that place? Sure, the air sucks and the lighting makes reading difficult but at least you can play Portal.

Producers of Steven Spielberg‘s much anticipated sci-fi series have cancelled the two-hour preview, citing a need for more time to implement visual effects. Their description is a little more flowery, using phrases like “cutting-edge” and “massive scope,” but they really just fell behind schedule.

So now, instead of time-travelling astronauts, you get episodes of the “The Chicago Code” and “Glee.” Way to replace time-travelling astronaut dinosaurs with singing gay teenagers in wheelchairs, Fox. Awesome. (Deadline)

It doesn't even matter if 'Terra Nova' is good. Just put dinosaurs on my TV every week, please.

Look, “Terra Nova” might be about a bunch of humans from a dying earth going back in time to save humanity, and there might be a family starting over, a ragtag crew, and a dinosaur-shooting gun, but that’s not the point here. The POINT is: there are going to be dinosaurs on television every week for the first time since we as a nation collectively shouted “Not the mama!” from the rooftops. The Fox drama is coming soon, so you better get your amber-covered mosquitoes ready.

The Super Bowl showed us more than just robots, superheroes, pirates, aliens, topless Olivia Wilde, and douchebags. It also showed us which programs Fox hopes they won't have to cancel this fall.

Dinosaurs, man. What if? That’s the question that Steven Spielberg wants to ask (again). The Super Bowl showed us more than just robots, superheroes, pirates, aliens, topless Olivia Wilde, and douchebags. It also showed us which programs Fox hopes they won’t have to cancel this fall.

The network has teamed up with Spielberg to produce “Terra Nova,” a show that sends a family 85 million years into the past to find the key to rebuild a deadened Earth. What they find instead are the leftovers from the Avatar set that James Cameron didn’t have the heart to scrap. Waterfalls, rainforest, and Stephen Lang. But he may be playing a good guy this time as evidenced by his beard. All the best people throughout history had beards — Darwin, Abraham Lincoln, Santa, Steven Spielberg, Kenny Rogers, writers during the Writers Strike, and your uncle who is perpetually struggling to get his landscaping business off the ground. You’ll get there Uncle Mike. Just keep pruning. Just keep pruning.

The ubiquitous Nick Stahl has joined the cast for the television pilot Locke & Key, a Fox project that had originally been slated for summer consideration, but has recently been pushed back to fall, offering the refreshingly frank explanation, “We couldn’t make the dates.” As long as that delightful play on words remains the title, an eager public will wait patiently. Locke & Key focuses on a family that, after the father’s murder, returns to his old house where they are haunted by a spirit named DODGE The spirit, which is of course evil, holds the family hostage unless it gets its way. Undoubtedly, we would learn more about DODGE and the family history as the series progresses. With this known, it should go without saying that this show is based on a graphic novel. Stahl would play the deceased’s younger brother who lives nearby. Stahl will join the existing cast, which includes Sarah Bolger and Miranda Otto.

This news, in conjunction with the Terra Nova premiere news yesterday, shows that Fox is making good on its promise to focus more on show development, perhaps realizing that American Idol won’t be their mealticket forever. While the premise of Locke & Key certainly doesn’t ensure that they’re developing good shows, they never spoke to the quality of their programming, just that they’d try harder. (Deadline)

The show, produced by Steven Spielberg, is about a family from the future who go back to the time of dinosaurs to start a new life for humanity. And dinosaurs eat them while they’re on the toilet, we hope.

Fox premiered the first clips of their upcoming dinosaur time travel series “Terra Nova” at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. Images of people in the future wearing gas masks on the subway gave way to a lush tropical environment 85 million years ago. Paradise is short lived though, because thumping noises start to boom and characters get jerked out of frame.

The show, produced by Steven Spielberg, is about a family from the future who go back to the time of dinosaurs to start a new life for humanity. And dinosaurs eat them while they’re on the toilet, we hope. Alex Graves, director of the pilot, promised big thrills for the whole family.

“It’s not a scary show,” Graves said. “It’s an adventure show. My kids, I have young kids, they’ve already seen some of it and they loved it. They’re not scared. It’s not scary in that way. It’s adventure scary, not scary scary. What we know about the Cretaceous period is a lot of nice things. It was a lush period, the beginning of flowers. It really goes into the types of dinosaurs in the fossil record, and the gray area of the fossil records of where were dinosaurs in evolution and were they evolving into birds.”

Series producer Brannon Braga, of “24” and “Star Trek” fame, teased some of the dinos he’s flat out making up. “We have dinosaurs we know existed from the fossil record but you get to make up your own dinosaurs as well,” Braga said.

“Terra Nova” will get a spring premiere, then return for the full series. It worked for “Glee,” although they came back in the fall and “Terra” is not due until 2012. The premiere is a full two hour event though.

“It always kind of was 2 hours,” Graves said. “The story was. The whole dilemma, I think it started as an hour script like most pilots and yet you just read it and it never felt like an hour.”

Braga added, “We had too much story and we struggled for a long time to figure out how to fit it all into 60 pages. There was a meeting at the network where we were all looking at each other going what are we going to do? Let’s make it a 2 hour. Then it started to breathe and there were challenges of making it 2 hours.”

The Terra Nova community was first set up by scientists who discovered the portal to another time. The show will answer the time travel questions, but you shouldn’t worry too much about the science.

“That stuff’s all there,” Braga said. “It’s not really what it’s all about. It was an accidental discovery they capitalized on. We found this naturally occurring thing that goes back 85 million years. We don’t know why but let’s build a thing around it.”

Now that they’ve established the community of Terra Nova in the past, they’re populating it with doctors, craftsmen and regular families. The enclosure that is Terra Nova itself looks environmentally friendly, a frontier style wall with some future technology like solar panels. This ain’t Avatar though. It’s not all environmentalist.

“It’s not what the show’s about,” Braga said. “It is about a second chance for earth but earth can only be saved if people restore it themselves and not bring with it the baggage they leave behind. That’s the philosophical crux of the show. Can utopia be built? Is it possible?”

Look for the preview of “Terra Nova” this May, and more interviews with the cast and creators here on Screen Junkies.

Steven Spielberg’s highly-anticipated new sci-fi series, “Terra Nova” has a premiere date of May 23rd, with a subsequent episode being shown the next night. From there, fans will have to wait until the fall season to follow the Shannon family as they travel back to prehistoric times to save the human race. Will a nation be able to survive the whole summer on the edge of their seats? Fox is betting they will.

The Hollywood Reporter picked up the premiere announcement at TCA today, although Fox has already picked up 13 episodes of “Terra Nova,” because when Spielberg said, “jump,” Fox execs saw the smart move was to simply ask, “how high?” Fox has faced disappointment this season, with two of three new fall shows (“The Good Guys” and “Lone Star“) getting the early axe. They have announced a plan to focus more on show development, something that is apparent with “Terra Nova” coming online in a few months.

Though “Terra Nova” is on budget, that budget is very, very high, with the pilot expected to cost $20 million, though that number will be amortized over subsequent episodes. Consequently, Fox is expected to throw its full weight behind the series as it films in Australia. While “event television” has been far from a sure thing, it’s a safe bet that the early premiere of “Terra Nova” will have people talking about Fox going into the historically quiet summer months. What they’ll be saying is another story.(Hollywood Reporter)

The year is 2149. Due to pollution and overpopulation, the planet is on the verge of collapse. Mankind’s only chance to save its future is to retreat to its prehistoric past. Using time travel technology, humanity must travel back 150 million years for a last chance at survival.

Actor Stephen Lang performs 'The Moose' at West London's Shadow Puppet Repertory Theatre.
Steven Spielberg's blatantly inspired by Avatar television project "Terra Nova" has just picked up a new castmember. Avatar's Stephen Lang has joined the show just as it loses its executive producer over creative differences.
Lang, whose star rose when he played the charismatic and ruthless leader of the Marines on the prehistoric Pandora settlement for James Cameron, will play the charismatic and ruthless leader of the prehistoric Terra Nova settlement. But this time he won't sport a badass scar.
It's really more of a slow-healing bruise. (Deadline)

The people of Queensland, Australia, might want to throw another shrimp on the barbie (unless shrimp falls into the whole shellfish/non-kosher category, in which case a nice brisket might be more in order).
Stephen Spielberg has chosen the land down under as the filming location for his new TV series, "Terra Nova," Coming Soon has confirmed.
"We wanted this ambitious series to look like no other on television and Queensland provided the best of all possible worlds," executive vice president of production, Jim Sharp added. "Queensland had the right look, climate and terrain..."
Considering the show is about a group of scientists from the future who travel back 85 million years to prehistoric Earth, I'm not exactly sure that's a ringing endorsement for Queensland tourism bureau.
Come to Queensland: "The Land That Time Forgot!"

Kyle Chandler gets paranoid around lip-readers.The long-suffering fans of Friday Night Lights would be wise to stiffen their upper-lips while reading this next piece of news. Kyle Chandler is said to be in talks to star in a new pilot for Steven Spielberg and Fox, all but guaranteeing the cult favorite will not survive its current season. But whatever, let's look to the future. Or in this case, to the future and then to the past.In Terra Nova, Chandler will play to his non-football coaching strengths to play a patriarch who travels through time (much like he did in "Early Edition") and get chased by dinosaurs (much like he did in King Kong). But this family from the future warped to prehistoric times sounds familiar. Where have I seen this Space Age meets the Stone Age concept before? (EW)
