Roy Barrows, the school’s technology teacher who helped make the video, also received a two-day suspension. However, I’d argue that his sentence should be more severe. He’s supposed to be teaching kids this stuff. The lighting, the acting. Just terrible. And you call that editing?!?!? (Boston.com)

With that, here are seven time travel films that will blow your mind.

Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure

Perhaps the most notable conduit to the principles of time travel that exists in popular culture, this film harnesses the powers of time travel to revisit seminal periods in history for the purpose of… getting a good grade on a history presentation. More impressive than the time travel itself (it was a magic phone booth that appeared at Circle K) was the duo’s ability to capture Genghis Khan. That guy had to have been pretty well protected, no? And the same for Abraham Lincoln. No wonder that guy ended up getting shot.

Back to the Future

All Marty McFly wanted to do was escape from the Lybians who gunned down his friend Doc Brown. However, once he hit 88 MPH in the mall parking lot, he found himself travelling back to his dad’s high school days. Hijinks ensue. Hijinks ensue BIG TIME.

This film taught us that what we do when we travel to the past has serious ramifications in the present, like sleeping with our moms, which shouldn’t be done in the past, present, or future, regardless of how much they flirt with you when they are in high school.

Groundhog Day

While this doesn’t follow the formula in the usual sense, the film is about a guy who lives the same day over and over. That’s time travel to me.

It also sounds like an incredibly maddening existence. I can’t say I would be able to hack it like he did, but he really didn’t have a choice. He tried to find a million ways to off himself in the process, but to no avail. He kept waking up in the same bed & breakfast, listening to the same obnoxious radio DJs.

I guess he just needed the love of Andie MacDowell to snap him out of it, which is pretty weird, because I would think that Andie MacDowell would put me in an inescapable funk, not take me out of one.

Source Code

Source Code is a lot like Groundhog Day, only if Groundhog Day was the day you died and thousands of other people died with you. So it’s really very little like Groundhog Day, but Jake Gyllenhaal DOES live the same period of time over and over. And he does manage to fall in love.

Also at the end of the film, rather than find love and live happily like Bill Murray does, Jake finds love, and we find out that he’s burned to a crisp with no arms or legs. So… there’s that.

The Terminator

In this film, the time travel is largely incidental. After all, it’s about a killing machine going around and killing people. But the greater purpose has to do with a future war. As such, Arnold Schwarzenegger is sent back in time to kill the mom of human military leader John Connor, ensuring that he won’t be born and the robots win in a walk.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is sent back through time nude, which leads us to believe, in the canon of time travel depiction, that clothes can’t travel through time nearly as well as people. So you might just want to keep your clothes in the era they are already in.

Hot Tub Time Machine

It’s right there in the title. Not unlike Snakes on a Plane, it’s pretty clear that the producers just went with a ridiculous title and worked backwards from there. But with Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, and John Cusack in the cast, it stands up better than it has a right to. Also, ridiculous 80′s throwback movies are like pizza: even when they’re bad, they’re still pretty good.

Looper

Unlike The Terminator, which sends the assassin back in time to kill its target, Looper sends the target thirty years back to an awaiting gunman. However, when the assassin finds out that he’s being paid to kill a future version of himself and “close the loop,” well, let’s just say things don’t really go so smoothly.

On a related note, I think that the worst thing you could ever ask me to do is kill my future self. I love my future self, and would do anything to protect him. Even if he was Bruce Willis, which would make me a little upset, but only because I don’t want to go bald.

Darth Schwarzenegger

Arnold Schwarzenegger may not have been a big enough star at the time to make his way into the Star Wars films, but luckily someone was able to right that wrong. Here, Arnold is cast as the most nefarious villain in film, Darth Vader. No, he doesn’t stick to the script but he chews the scenery nonetheless. Face it, it’s just a matter of time before George Lucas decides to reboot the franchise. When he does, I think we have our heavy lined up.

His DVD Commentary Tracks

By and large, we can agree that DVD commentaries are rarely entertaining. However, in the case of Arnold Schwarzenegger films, lightning has struck multiple times. Not only is it just funny to hear Arnold’s perspective of the material, but it’s made all the richer when he’s had a few to drink before recording. It really gives you a glimpse into the man.

He Tweeted From The Ocean’s Deepest Point

The impetus for this inventory of silly Cameron behavior is his recent submersion to the deepest point of the ocean, then his tweet from there, making him (probably) the person that holds the record for the deepest tweet in history. Sounds dirty, but really it’s just absurd.

I’m hoping that we’re only a few years away from Cameron getting another divorce so that he can marry the sea in a civil ceremony in Vermont.

He’s Been Married Five Times

He’s like the Liz Taylor of men! First married in 1978 to Sharon Williams, Cameron’s revolving door of nuptials and pledges included Gale Ann Hurd, Hurt Locker director Kathryn Bigelow, Terminators 1 and 2 star Linda Hamilton, and Suzy Amis, to whom he has been married since 2000. Whoa! 12 years. We may have found a keeper.

Judging by many of the accounts of actors and crew members on his sets, coexisting with James is no walk in the park for three months, so I can’t imagine that living with him and his peccadilloes day in and day out would be a walk in the park.

His Golden Globes Acceptance Speech Contained A Line In Na’vi

Yup, he tossed in a line from a fictional language he created upon receipt of a Golden Globe. Not an Oscar, mind you, but a Golden Globe.

He offered up this little pearl to the drunk guests in attendance and the woefully sober audiences at home:

“I just want to say,” the shaggy-haired director said, “Bonati komaei mismoka mismokay — which means, I see you, my brothers and sisters.”

He sees us? That’s terrific news! We see you, too, James. And you’re a big, glorious vision of a man. Shine on, you crazy diamond! Why can he quote his own language in a moment of glory, but when I won that beer pong tourney and offered thanks in a mumbled drunken language I made up, it was a minor tragedy? Doesn’t seem fair to me at all.

Ellen Ripley

Sigourney Weaver’s protagonist across 4 movies in the Alien series is perhaps the definitive kick-ass onscreen woman. She’s an inspiration to all of us, seeing as she was the sole survivor after her ship was infiltrated by a killer alien. In fact, not only was she a survivor, but she actually blew the son of a bitch out of the airlock. AND she did it at least partially in her underwear, which is really just an added bonus. Don’t hurt me, please.

Sarah Connor

Even more so than Ripley, the heroine of the first two Terminator movies has quite an evolution from unassuming girl to horrifying warrior/possible crazy person. In The Terminator, Sarah is a suburban waitress who becomes the target of a cyborg from the future sent to murder her before she gives birth to the savior of humankind. In Terminator 2, she’s confined to a mental asylum and will crack your face open with a broken broom handle just as soon as not. And that’s before she gets out and starts using guns and explosives and stuff.

Xena, Warrior Princess

I don’t really remember much about Xena. She had throwing discs, and she hung out with Hercules, and she got into lots of fights, and she had a girlfriend? Sounds like a kick-ass woman to me. I bet she’d like me if she got to know me (although maybe she thinks the same thing about me, like I said it’s been a while since I watched the show).

“Governor Schwarzenegger is focusing on personal matters and is not willing to commit to any production schedules or timelines. This includes ‘Cry Macho‘, The ‘Terminator‘ franchise and other projects under consideration. We will resume discussions when Governor Schwarzenegger decides.”

There it is. I don’t know what this means for the long-term future of these projects – maybe Schwarzenegger will be able to stage a comeback-comeback from his first failed attempt at a comeback.

Seems like The Terminator is always battling for the future. Now it’s time for Terminator to take a breather and let other folks battle over his future for a change. You earned it, big guy.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has come back to the Terminator franchise — [Insert "I'll Be Back" Joke] — and Fast Five direct Justin Lin is also attached. Interest is clearly heating up like a vat of molten steel, because Lionsgate has competition for buying the rights from hedge fund Pacificor: Megan Ellison. You may remember hearing about Ellison on this very website, because the wealthy heiress is financing tons of interesting projects, like Kathryn Bigelow‘s Osama Bin Laden movie and Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master, along with last year’s True Grit. Lionsgate bid $29.5 million, but Ellison’s Annapurna Films bid higher. *Tension*

Who will control the new Schwarzenegger Terminator? Still waiting to see if Skynet throws in a bid. (Movieline)

Although no details are available on the premise (since there’s no screenplay), nor a timeline here, it’s safe to say that this would probably take priority over any other projects, as whatever studio pays the $30mm or so to get this project will probably want to see a return on that investment sooner rather than later.

Don’t be surprised if this film takes place so far in the future that technology is such that cyborgs not only age, but get fat. But the technology still isn’t there to change an Austrian accent. (Deadline)

So basically, he might do it, but then again he might not. That’s just the kind of fickleness that a Terminator wouldn’t understand. You program a Terminator to do something, and he does it! Since “The Great Arnold Schwarzenegger Tweet of 2011,” offers have been coming in for the former Kindergarden Cop. Apparently the hottest offer being discussed is for Universal to team him up with director Justin Lin (three Fast and Furious movies) and writer Chris Morgan (also three Fast and Furious movies) for another Terminator movie. So, yes, Arnold wouldn’t just “be back,” he’d “be back” in the role where he says he’ll “be back.” Can’t get more “back” than that.

The franchise, once hotter than molten steel, has cooled off considerably in recent years. It would take some serious time traveling to change the weak box office numbers from Terminator: Salvation, and legal troubles + bankruptcy issues with the property’s former owner have left many doubting whether Terminator has a future. However, with Schwarzenegger now in the picture once again, we might not have to say “hasta la vista” after all. (Deadline)

Good news for fans of killer robots from the future. A bunch of production companies you’ve never heard of are developing Terminator 3000, a proposed $70 million, 3D animated feature.

Although plot details are sparse, the film will involve characters from the original Terminator. However, what we do know is that those involved with the production are keeping violence to a minimum in order to avoid an R rating. After all, we wouldn’t want a movie about blood-thirsty cyborgs from a post-apocalyptic hell hole to get too violent. What if someone wants to take their grandma, or maybe their 4-year-old daughter? Just yesterday, it seemed as if Sex and the City’s destruction was all but assured. With poor box-office returns, a rapidly aging cast and the death of Rue McClanahan (a.k.a. Samantha), another film seemed out of the question. But much like Skynet from the Terminator series, SATC is launching a last-ditch effort to escape oblivion by fleeing into the past.

New Line has expressed interest in adapting SATC author Candace Bushnell’s follow-up series, "The Carrie Diaries," into a prequel, allowing for a "new and younger-skewing collection of films." Perhaps most disturbing is the fact that Bushnell herself has expressed interest in Miley Cyrus as a possible lead.

Unless we want to see Sex and the City continue to plague mankind for generations to come, this prequel must be stopped. For he who controls the past controls the future, and he who controls the present controls the past…or something like that. (CinemaBlend)

The rights to The Terminator franchise have been something of a hot potato lately. Not the kind with rich, buttery goodness inside rather the kind with boring, underwhelming stories inside. MTV caught up with James Cameron yesterday to discuss the state of the series he created and whether or not he would return for a sequel.

Now Cameron is a well-spring of awesome quotes and yesterday was no exception. From the HMFIC:

"From my perspective, it’s run its course… the soup’s kind of been pissed in a little bit by other filmmakers, so I don’t have any personal desire to go back to it."

The bidding war over the rights to the Terminator franchise is over and the winner is… Pacificor? I’m sorry but I’m not familiar with their films. From Deadline Hollywood:

“Sony and Lionsgate dropped out at just under $29.5 million when it became clear that Santa Barbara-based hedge fund Pacificor was willing to pay almost any amount of money for Terminator.”

Oh. That’s why I didn’t know them. Pacificor is the debtholder that pushed Halcyon into bankruptcy in the first place. Now they’ve swooped in and traded that debt for the once lucrative franchise. I think it would be awesome if James Cameron bought them. Not so he could make another Terminator but so he could take a dump on Terminator 3 in front of director Jonathan Mostow‘s house.

No one knows what Pacificor plans to do with the rights but let’s hope it’s not to steal the technology and build their own army of machines. If robots become self-aware, there’s no telling what kind of damage they may cause.

Apparently all the big studios are lining up to secure the rights. But why? The last two movies were pretty abysmal and The Sarah Connor Chronicles never found the audience it deserved. With Arnie indisposed and special effects breakthroughs having plateaued it’s time to face the sad, cold truth. We as a people have to face the fact that killer robots are sooo over. Let us all begrudgingly tear down our Chopping Mall posters and set fire to our I, Robot theater-lobby standees. Today will usher in the age of the friendly (probably farting) robot.
