While Ferrell could have disseminated this information through a number of outlets, Conan has proved to be his go-to venue for, well, just about everything. He must REALLY like Conan, considering he’s got a whole comedy website (Funny or Die) that could also handle these announcements, while reaching just as many people. I guess it’s the spectacle of being on semi-live televisions, as well as Conan’s willingness to let Ferrell do pretty much whatever he wants.

He’s a good sport that way.

While this might be the most newsworthy of Ferrell’s appearances on Conan, it’s far from the most outrageous. Here’s a collection of Ferrell’s weirdest and funniest appearances on Conan.

“Free Bird”

The last image from Conan’s ill-fated Tonight Show tenure is this live performance of Lynard Skynard’s ballad “Free Bird,” which served as a fairly moving goodbye, in as much as a talk show hosting change can be moving. While Ferrell took vocal duties in the character of some southern-fried rocker, ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, Beck, and Conan all took guitar duty while the rest of Conan’s band laid down rhythm.

It may have been during this video that casual fans learned that Conan is an absolute beast on guitar, and all fans, casual or not, were reminded that Ferrell doesn’t have a good singing voice.

Dog Obstacle Course

Here, Ferrell cracks on egg of knowledge on Conan fans, informing them that, during his downtime, he really, really, really enjoys training dogs for obstacle courses in shows.

To share his passion with the world, he brought on a few dogs and set up an obstacle course. Though it’s Will Ferrell, and we all know he’s joking, he comes across as genuine right until the moment he points out the tightrope on the course. That could be an issue.

And it is. It turns out that Will Ferrell is absolutely terrible at training dogs, as they just continue to mill about idly once they take the stage. Ferrell adopts his loud, frustrated persona, and a good time is had by all.

As Robert GOULET!

One of Ferrell’s most beloved characters is a caricature of lounge singer Robert Goulet. Will came onto Conan’s Tonight Show in character, constantly mistaking Conan for Johnny Carson, and his New York studio for Johnny’s Burbank one back in the day. Even on SNL, Goulet was one of Ferrell’s more absurd characters, but the new dimensions are shown when he gets the opportunity to improvise and riff with the always-game Conan and Co.

Will Shaves Conan

After getting yanked from The Tonight Show while he was still forbidden from appearing on TV, Conan grew one of those beards you grow when you backpack through Nepal or when your girlfriend breaks up with you. However, when he finally got the ball rolling on TBS, it was a new beginning, and the beard had to go.

There was no question who would handle the duties. Will Ferrell appears on the show, ostensibly to talk about his new movie, but he quickly tells Conan to “shut the fuck up,” and gets the beard-trimming ball rolling.

Spoiler alert: Ferrell quits about halfway through, leaving Conan with an awesomely hilarious half-beard thing.

Hey! It’s Will Ferrell being outrageous again! This time he’s dressed as a damn Leprchaun. Oh, Will! You’re just outrageous!

It’s a little difficult to keep explaining why these appearances are funny, and describe what’s going on. Will Ferrell showed up at Conan’s show dressed as a leprechaun in a Speedo. It’s funny because people normally don’t do that.

Ralphie

Peter Billingsley is best known for his on-camera work as Ralphie, the protagonist of A Christmas Story. However, he’s had an even more successful career behind the camera. After befriending Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau, he’s gone on to produce films like Made, The Break-Up, Iron Man, and Four Christmases. He also directed Couple’s Retreat. Somebody had to, I guess.

The Old Man

Darren McGavin steals the show as Ralphie’s stern, lamp-loving father. Sadly, he’s not with us anymore but he’s left behind an impressive resume with roles on The X-Files, some older crap, and most impressively, as Billy Madison’s dad. It takes a fine actor to stand there next to a guy in a giant penguin costume and pretend to not notice the giant penguin.

On last night’s Conan, which has been filming in New York all week, the mean-spirited mutt took to the streets, mocking the vast array of weirdos he found camped out in the financial district. But he also took time to insult the bankers and stock brokers who work in the area. At one point, a giant inflatable Triumph was used to bang the iconic Charging Bull statue from behind (a.k.a. Doggie Style), a symbolic gesture that’s sure to resonate with many Americans as well as the hoards of confused Japanese tourists randomly passing by.

Also, please note that you will be watching a lot of clips from the 80′s and early 90′s, so prepare yourself for an outrageous amount of saxophone.

The Pat Sajak Show - Jan., 1989 to Apr., 1990

Those of you who aren’t old enough to remember the 80′s are blessed. It was an awful time, as evidenced by this clip. Yes, that’s Pat Sajak, the guy who hosts Wheel of Fortune. There’s no reason to particularly dislike the man, but seeing that sweater in the intro is enough to make people change the channel. However, he was ahead of his time on the whole Betty White craze.

So the new documentary Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop takes us back to a time many one year and a few months ago, where O’Brien left “The Tonight Show” and embarked on a 32-state tour of the country called “The Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour.” Looks like we’re getting a close-up look at the man behind the red mop… but will we like what we see?

“Tyler Perry’s series have been tremendously successful for TBS, helping establish the network as a prime destination for African-American viewers,” said Michael Wright, executive vice president, head of programming, for TBS, TNT and Turner Classic Movies. “Given such a remarkable track record, we’re excited for the opportunity to expand our relationship with Tyler Perry and Debmar-Mercury with the new series For Better or Worse.”

Some folks are saying Conan O’Brien‘s ratings aren’t very good, because he’s getting beaten regularly by rivals Jay Leno and David Letterman. First, please take a moment to “boo” the name Jay Leno out loud in front of your computer.

Done? Good. Now, here’s the problem: “Conan” on TBS seems to always have less total viewers and often less 18-49 year old viewers than the shows of his older counterparts. However, thanks to newfangled TV gadgets, we now have “plus 7 ratings,” which counts viewers who watch a show on DVR up to 7 days after recording it (and has nothing to do with sneaking way too many of your friends into a party).

If you factor in O’Brien’s plus 7, as his William Morris Endeavor agent Rick Rosen said he does in a recent statement, then Coco is a Hit-O.

“The ratings system needs to catch up to the viewing patterns and the world,” declared Rosen, adding: “To me it’s the most significant challenge to television today.”

Conan‘s audience is younger too. On average, O’Brien’s audience is a Twitter-Trackin’ 34, compared to Leno and Letterman’s Twitter-Fearin’ mid-50s. So maybe “size” isn’t everything. Being young and gangly counts for something too. (Hollywood Reporter)

According to her interview with Conan‘s super lame TBS talk show cousin George Lopez, Faris was harassed by rowdy New Zealander dudes watching her film recent cinema masterpiece Yogi Bear. From there, Faris concluded that all New Zealand guys are (CG animated) pigs, which Ian Long, spokesman for the New Zealand tourism board, took offense to.

Noting that Faris received an award for being a smoking hot pot smoker later on Lopez, Long said that since “she accepts an award for being a pothead stoner of the year… I don’t think she has any credibility.” His bosses weren’t pleased with that, and New Zealand released this official retraction:

“The inference that Tourism NZ did not take Ms. Faris’ comments seriously is very much regretted and was certainly not intended. On a U.S. talk show Ms. Faris spoke about disrespectful behavior she experienced during her stay in New Zealand and as a consequence her impression of New Zealand men is, to say the least, poor.”

When Bart Simpson pissed off Australia, they gave him a booting. I don’t think Faris was in the wrong, but I’d still like her to receive a booting. It beats an entire country pussying out on what could have been an awesome publicity war. Then again, when I think of “great wars,” none of them involve New Zealand. (Cinema Blend)

For every Christmas in recent memory, TBS has broadcast Bob Clark’s Christmas classic, A Christmas Story. While other holiday films have become an annual tradition as well, A Christmas Story has the unique distinction of being run for 24 hours, starting at 8PM EST on Christmas Eve. I usually end up watching the entire film in bits and pieces throughout the holiday. And while I love seeing Ralphie and his family, I couldn’t help but wonder if my feelings would hold up upon actually watching the entire 24-hour marathon. So last Sunday, I decided to put myself to the test and watch the film for 24-straight hours.

Did my admiration for A Christmas Story grow even stronger, or did the compounding monotony of each subsequent viewing slowly strain my will to live? See for yourself by reading the detailed notes of my 24-hours of A Christmas Story social experiment.

Minute 5: The warm glow of nostalgia has washed over me. The film makes me think of my childhood, but the time-frame makes me think of what Christmas was probably like for my parents and grandparents.

1 Hour and 33 Minutes: What a great movie. No wonder people are able to watch it over and over again. Merry Christmas, indeed.

3 Hours and 57 Minutes: LOL! “Fra-gee-lay!” That will never get old!

5 Hours and 23 Minutes: It’s “fragile,” you crotchety old imbecile! Say it right!

6 Hours and 37 Minutes: Gee, I wonder what Ralphie’s mom would look like topless?

6 Hours and 39 Minutes: Well, that answers that! Thank you, Google Image Search. Thank you, Mr. Skin. And thank you, Melinda Dillon, for those lovely “Banana Ups.”

9 Hours and 2 Minutes: Holy crap! Scut Farkus was in Transformers? And “Deadwood?” And a Uwe Boll movie?

11 Hours: I wonder if Asians hate the “Fa Ra Ra Ra Ra” scene? I bet they do, but they know better than to bitch about A Christmas Story. I wonder if Panda Express delivers?

13 Hours and 44 Minutes: Soap poisoning? That doesn’t even make sense! Screw you, you four-eyed little freak.

14 Hours and 29 Minutes: Just cut his goddamn tongue off, or leave him to die. It’s called natural selection, people! We’re deluding the gene pool!

15 Hours and 7 Minutes: This is the worst god damn movie in the world. I hate it. I hate Christmas. What I wouldn’t give to watch Fiddler on the Roof right now.

16 Hours and 2 Minutes: The guy who directed this awful thing was killed by a drunk-driving illegal immigrant. Looks like I’m now in favor of amnesty and and against MADD!

18 Hours: Fun fact! Although it was filmed in Cleveland, A Christmas Story takes place in Hammond, Indiana, the boyhood home of author Jean Shepherd. However, the actual home where Shepherd grew up was demolished to make way for The Industrial Strip, Chicagoland’s ultimate adult entertainment venue.

20 Hours and 10 Minutes: God damn you, Randy. God damn you straight to hell, you little mother fudger.

21 Hours and 33 Minutes:I am the angel of death. The hour of purification is near.

22 Hours and 2 Minutes – Jesus Christ… Did my furnace just growl at me? Where’s my gun? MOM, DID YOU TOUCH MY GUN? Oh right, you died in 2004. Sorry.

A word from Julianna: “I always have a hard time watching horror movies that I’m not in because they really scare me.”

The show opened with a really slick segment that skewered NBC’s bonkers decision to dick him around. It’s not the end-all be-all of comedy by any stretch, but it displays a sly zaniness that you don’t see in late night television. And it’s light years better than watching Jay Leno ring random Los Angelenos’s doorbells. Just once, I’d like to see him knock on the wrong door and end up in hot water. Like, he accidentally films a paranoid militia-man. Or Gary Busey.

Conan O’Brien put on a five-minute trial run of his upcoming TBS show in a conference room. Here’s hoping the production value of the actual show exceeds this one. I know it’s not NBC, but paint is so affordable these days. I don’t want to ruin the guest since he only stays for 30 seconds, so I’ll only say that it causes a BIG BANG THEORY. Diet Coke probably gets more air time than anything else. Hey, someone’s gotta pay for those spotlight gels.

To promote his new talk show "Conan" on TBS, Conan O’Brien has set up a live web cam in the Team Coco offices. As you can see from the above screen grab, crazy sh*t is going down. I’ve been watching it for awhile now and it’s oddly fascinating. There has been an 80′s aerobics class, a public speaker, and a black man holding up a sign that says "I See White People!!!" I personally just like watching the employees walk by. It makes me feel like I’m part of a nurturing office environment. Not this damp cellar they call SJ Headquarters.

Here we see him pack a vintage car with plastique, illegal fireworks, and popcorn kernals before personally driving it off a cliff. Only way this could be sweeter is if the car was borrowed from the Leno Collection.

Conan O’Brien’s new TBS show begins on November 8th, and the network is starting to ramp up promotion. In this sexy new ad, Coco prepares for his new gig by washing off his desk. But instead of getting clean, Conan gets down and dirty in a scene reminiscent of Paris Hilton‘s famously slutty Carl’s Jr. ad campaign.

While watching Conan get sprayed with a garden hose was pretty hot, I would have rather seen Jay Leno get sprayed with a fire hose, preferably in the face and genitals. But that’s just me. (Coming Soon)

Don’t be distracted by his off-putting facial hair. Conan O’Brien has a message of utmost importance to share with you. Namely, the name of his new show. Much like his parents did 47 years ago, he’s made the regrettable decision of naming it "Conan." This show is going to sooo get its ass kicked during recess. (Vulture)

Conan Announces Name Of New TBS Show! – Watch more Funny Videos

There’s trouble a brew’n at TBS. Page 6 is reporting that Conan O’Brien’s writers aren’t happy with the pay being doled out by their new employer. Apparently they are under the impression that the network, which until recently conisisted of nothing but Atlanta Braves’ games and old Hanna-Barbera cartoons, is swimming in cash.

"This is no surprise," said an insider. "One show was broadcast network; the other is basic cable. It’s a different pay scale. It’s not just writers; it’s everybody."

Despite the complaints, no formal agreement has been made. The Writers Guild is still in talks with TBS, so it’s possible that the network will find a way to come up with more cash. Perhaps they could stop paying homeless drifters to be in the George Lopez studio audience and just switch to a laugh track. Although in all fairness, the technology to create laughter for that show is probably a few years away.

Promos for Conan O’Brien’s new show are now airing on TBS, and for hardcore comedy dorks, things are looking up. That’s because the ad is very reminiscent of "Monty Python‘s Flying Circus," specifically, the animated shorts of director Terry Gilliam.

Whether or not the style was intentional is irrelevant. The result is the same either way. Monty Python fans are with Coco. Although that was probably true before the ad, as well. (Cinema Blend)

Conan O’Brien chooses TBS.  In a surprise move, O’Brien announced on his Twitter this morning that the cable channel will be his new home:

"The good news: I’ll be doing a show on TBS starting in November. The bad news: I’ll be playing Rudy on the all new Cosby Show."

Coco’s show will air at 11PM, Monday-Thursday, the slot now occupied by "Lopez Tonight." George Lopez is acting all "mi casa, su casa" about getting the bump to midnight, having called O’Brien personally and stating, "I can think of nothing better than doing my show with Conan as my lead-in."

It was thought that Conan might land at FOX this Fall, but the affiliates’ shared fear of replacing profitable "Seinfeld" reruns with a floppy, red-haired gamble put a wrench in the works. Conan couldn’t seem happier about the move though, stating, ""In three months I’ve gone from network television to Twitter to performing live in theaters, and now I’m headed to basic cable. My plan is working perfectly."
