Susannah York, who was a significant star in British and American theater and movies in the late 60s and 70s has died of cancer. She’s probably most well-known to American audiences as Lara, Superman‘s biological Kryptonian mother in the 1978 blockbuster Superman and its assorted sequels. She also received acclaim for her performances in the movies They Shoot Horses Don’t They? and Tom Jones. She was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in the former film, and she famously snubbed the Academy after saying she was insulted by receiving a nomination without first being asked. She continued to work fairly regularly up until her death, on stage and onscreen. She was 72.
