Survival of the Dead

Survival of the Dead is so cartoonish, that you wouldn’t be surprised to see the cast of Looney Tunes popping out of nowhere and blasting away some Zombies.
 
Marking his 6th official journey into the world of the undead, legendary filmmaker George A. Romero, creates a hybrid Z-picture that can be decribed as part Western, part cartoon, and part iconclastic horror movie.

A bloody family life-long feud on an island off the coast of Delaware between two Irish families, the Muldoons and the O’Flynns, is put into overdrive when the zombie apocalypse hits and the two families take to their own managing of the zombie problem. Muldoon and his clan, looking like a cross between Elmer Fudd and Foghorn Leghorn, want to keep the undead held in captivity untill a cure comes along. On the other hand, O’Flynn and his clan, a cross between Yosemite Sam and Bugs Bunny, take a shoot-first-ask-questions-later approach to dealing with the undead creatures.
 
The message this time, or lack of one, amounts to it being about borders and flags, and how we make a whole big deal about them until we forget about the real problems that need to be fought together.
 
Yet this is totally erroneous to the fact that Romero just wants to make another head bashing zombie movie. Here he succeeds for about 60 percent of the time, but is one or too leg chomps away from a total disaster.
 
Too many subplots and broad humor at times get in the way of his more grittier, intense moments. Still, he brings plenty of gore and humor, even with a much lower budget, similar to his Diary of the Dead two years ago, which Survival has several spin-off characters from.
 
Survival is  the first, according to Romero, in a planned trilogy of more Dead movies. Someone should let him know that "triology" means "three." Three movies focusing on the same subject material. We’ve already got two trilogies, and then some, George.
 
The Z-genre, with the exception of Zombieland, Shaun of the Dead and 28 Days Later, has been decaying on the movie going audience for the past decade, and Survival of the Dead is no exception.
 
Grade: C+

Michelle Morgan is our second Canadian import of the week. She is featured in the drama series “Heartland” as Amy Fleming’s older sister Lou and in the 2008 zombie horror flick Diary of the Dead. George Romero loves his Canadian women (because they’re cheaper).

Amy Lalonde is a fine import from Canada. She has made guest appearances on “Queer as Folk” and “Battlestar Gallactica.” Before Amy turned to acting, she was at high school teacher in Ontario. Some teenagers have all the luck, I tell ya.

A word from Amy: “Eh, what’s this aboot?”

She’s Canadian. She’s had to have said that at some point in her life.

Kathleen Munroe is best known for the role of Annabelle Banks in the television series “Beautiful People.” She’s also appeared in “Without a Trace,” “Cold Case,” and “CSI:NY,” so she’s basically an expert on procedurial dramas.

A word from Kathleen: Apparently she hasn’t ever said anything. At least nothing that I could find in my “extensive” search.

I don’t want to beat a dead horse by making a "beating an undead horse" joke about Geroge Romero, but Jesus H. Christ! He’s making it very hard not to.

Although Romero’s sixth zombie film, Survival of the Dead, hasn’t even hit theaters yet, the legendary director is already talking about two more installments.

In a recent interview, Romero said he would like to shoot the films back to back and that "returning for two more entries would feel like home to him."

I’d like to point out that to experience something that "feels like home" you would actually have to leave home first. But at any rate, shooting the films back to back is probably a good idea, considering Romero is 70. If this goes on much longer, the undead films are going to need an undead director…because he’ll be dead. Get it? Yeah you do. (First Showing)

Parents groups are up in arms over the growing popularity of red-band trailers and the ease with which children are able to access them. What they need to do is face the fact that red-band trailers are awesome and it’s growing much harder to monitor their kids due to the Internet’s reach. This battle is lost parents. You should just focus on being "cool parents" and pop the corn, kick back, and check out this second red-band trailer for George Romero‘s Survival of the Dead. It’s not that explicit except for all the blood and guts and stuff. Also, a zombie rides a horse.

Sidenote: Here we are in the year 2010 and Romero has six Living Dead movies under his belt and he’s only now breaching shooting zombies with a flare gun territory. Now that’s an artist who knows how to keep things fresh.

Zombies getting killed by hot dogs now The walking dead are getting weak as sh*t. Next thing you know our pees-pees will do the trick, they’ll be an outbreak of zombie murder-rape, and then legal types will start talking about "equal rights." It’s never worked before and it certainly won’t work after an apocalypse.

On that note, the red band teaser for George Romero‘s Survival of the Dead hit the Internetz today. What are the zombies doing in this one, you ask? On an island off the coast of North America, local residents simultaneously fight a zombie epidemic while hoping for a cure to return their un-dead relatives back to their human state. Amazing! How do they keep breathing new life into this dead concept?! Hey, if you don’t like my schtick my mom will reimburse you.

Thanks to the folks at Bloody Disgusting, we get a sneak peak at George Romero‘s latest attempt to breathe more life into the zombie horror genre (pun blatantly intended). There’s everything you’d expect in the trailer below: zombies, humans, guns, brains, stilted dialogue. We don’t watch these films for the breakthrough performances though, we watch them because we feel compelled to on the off chance that something blows our brains out of our skull (oh man the puns are so goooood)!
