This should keep the little bastard quiet for a while.

Although most therapists agree that your inner child needs to be nurtured and respected, sometimes you just want to scare the shit out of it instead. If this applies to you, maybe give some of these movies a shot. That should keep the little bastard quiet for a while, huh? Brought to you by Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, now available on Blu-ray & DVD.

Check out these other Sony “Action Unleashed” DVDs!

Super 8

Movies with children in peril tend to be pretty scary to kids, obviously because they see themselves in the middle of the action. And the action in Super 8 is as terrifying as you can get without veering into R-rated, too-shocking-to-resonate territory (I guess you could subject your inner child to Irreversible or The Last House on the Left, but what’s the fun in that? In addition to being scared, your inner child might feel a bit empowered too, since most of the anti-alien-monster heroics in Super 8 are performed by children.

It

Nothing is scarier to children, inner or otherwise, than evil clowns. And It, based on the novel by Stephen King, features the king of the killer clowns. Pennywise, played by Tim Curry, has the power to transform himself into whatever his victims fear the most. And for much of the movie, his victims (and the protagonists of the story) are little kids. No matter how tough your inner child is, he or she won’t be feeling the urge to go to the circus any time soon.

Kids can kick ass, too.

Attack the Block from director Joe Cornish is coming out on DVD and Blu-ray, but it isn’t the only movie to feature kids locking horns with scary monsters. After all, pitting young people against your monster makes the monster look bigger.

Here are seven epic movie battles between kids and monsters.

Super 8

This year’s Super 8 was a classic example of kids vs. monsters. You’ve got a small band of nerdy child filmmakers who accidentally get embroiled in a government cover-up of a giant alien monster they’ve been experimenting on for decades.

It

Don’t think the kids from It have it easy just because they’re in a made-for-TV monster movie. As anyone who saw this movie will tell you, the monster from It, which preys on fear and has the ability to take the shape of anything that frightens you, is a lot scarier than the majority of big-screen movie monsters. His most terrifying form is as a murderous clown played by (of course) Tim Curry. If you’re still doubting the legitimacy of this monster, remember that by the time he was defeated, the kids had grown up into adults!

So many secrets surround this movie. I don't know who I can trust.

If you stuck around during the end credits of Super 8 and didn’t watch the left side of the screen, you noticed that Bruce Greenwood was credited with the role of Cooper in the film. Then you were all like, which one was Cooper? Then you likely forgot about it and went to your friend Tom’s birthday party.

Have A Quick Look At The ‘Super 8′ Alien In This New Viral Video

Anyway, it turns out that after months of secrecy, the alien in Super 8 was actually Bruce Greenwood covered in ping-pong balls. The Star Trek actor is now talking about his role in the Spielberg homage and how performing the motion capture was a very different experience from what he’s accustomed to.

“It’s not your typical acting exercise at all, because you’re really the only person in this room with all these cameras in it. It was a very weird thing to offer up all this big emotion while . . . the rest of the people in the room are picking away at the craft services table. And you never really (sic) how it will turn out because it’s all left in the hands of the artists and animators who are putting your work together.

“The other part that was really memorable was that I saw a bunch of other (big name) actors who were doing the same thing in other studios . . . and there we were: In one-piece Danskins with our pot bellies and saggy asses hanging out.”

So, everyone on set eats craft service during motion capture shoots leaving the actor to do their own thing? In other news, Brett Ratner just hired Andy Serkis. (Montreal Gazette)

Finally, I'll get to see what that damn alien looks like. Then again, maybe not. It's not like J.J. Abrams is big on closure.

After months of waiting, Super 8 has arrived. Finally, I’ll get to see what that damn alien looks like. Then again, maybe not. It’s not like J.J. Abrams is big on closure. After spending years watching “Lost,” I still don’t know what the hell was going on. It was so hard to follow, like “Heroes” or “Will and Grace.” Hopefully, that’s not the case with Super 8.

Here’s a look at what’s playing.

8 photosNew ‘Super 8′ Stills Show Everything (But The Monster)

Super 8

If you like Steven Spielberg, you’re probably anxious to see J.J. Abrams’ Super 8. The film is basically a love note to the acclaimed director of E.T., Close Encounters, and lest we forget, 1941.

See, even geniuses shit the bed once in a while.

Best Review
Super 8 is a wonderful film, nostalgia not for a time but for a style of filmmaking, when shell-shocked young audiences were told a story and not pounded over the head with aggressive action.

Roger Ebert – The Chicago Sun-Times

Worst Review
Sadly, the helmer seems too smitten working with Steven Spielberg to recognize that his idol-turned-champion created the very paradigm that limits his passion project, forcing this modest nostalgia trip to function as a blockbuster.

Peter Debruge – Variety

Our Recommendation
Over all, there seems to be a lot to like about this film, provided you haven’t bought into the hype. If you set out with realistic expectations, you’ll probably enjoy it. But if you are already expecting a classic, be prepared for disappointment…just like my wife.

Midnight in Paris

Woody Allen‘s latest film is finally getting a wide release. And that’s great news, if you like Woody Allen.

‘Midnight In Paris’ Trailer: Now It’s Owen Wilson’s Turn To Imitate Woody Allen

If you don’t like Woody Allen, then why they hell are you bothering to read this? Get out there and live, damn it!

Best Review
As a filmmaker, Allen has grappled with the temptations of repeating himself instead of forging a fresh path. You can feel that conflict here, and watching him work it out is exhilarating.

Peter Travers – Rolling Stone

Worst Review
Pure Woody Allen. Which is not to say great or even good Woody, but a distillation of the filmmaker’s passions and crotchets, and of his tendency to pass draconian judgment on characters the audience is not supposed to like.

Richard Corliss – TIME Magazine

Our Recommendation
If you’re OK with a guy banging his pseudo step-daughter, be sure and check out Midnight in Paris!

Troll Hunter

Troll Hunter is not your father’s troll hunting film. Unless of course you are very young, and your father worked on this film, in which case, it is.

<a class='img' href='http://www.screenjunkies.com/video/trolls-are-larger-than-life-in-troll-hunter-trailer/' title='Trolls Are Larger Than Life In 'Troll Hunter' Trailer'>
Trolls Are Larger Than Life In 'Troll Hunter' Trailer

Either way, this film about Norwegian film students trolling for trolls is unlike anything you’ve seen before, unless you’ve seen another movie about trolls. God, I’ve got to stop making such sweeping statements.

Best Review
You’ll want to catch this clever movie before Hollywood ruins everything with a dumb remake.

V.A. Musetto – New York Post

Worst Review
Here’s what’s not so good in Troll Hunter: the actual troll hunting.

Noel Murray – AV Club

Our Recommendation
If you’re in the mood for something different, this film will certainly deliver. The premise isn’t for everyone, but with genuinely positive reviews, you can do a lot worse.

OF COURSE there's a 'Super 8' viral Easter Egg video.

6 photosAmanda Michalka

Those not fortunate enough to get an early look at Super 8 (and subsequently berate it) are likely curious about the film’s secrets and what the alien looks like and if Kyle Chandler is nice or not and does JJ Abrams work out and if so how does he find the time. Well, this video should help with some of those questions.

Over the last few months, clips from a 1960′s secret military video were released to various websites. Now on the day of the film’s early release, those clips have been pieced together and feature the early scientific research into the film’s alien. Be advised that the video contains minor plot spoilers as well as a glimpse of the alien. If you want to see the film with fresh eyes, don’t watch the video. But please pour over my words and tell me if you see us sealing the deal tonight. I mean, c’mon. Bus rides and extra value meals add up, you know.
If you can't wait for this to release on VHS, you can win tickets for an advanced screening.

SUPER 8 is going even further down the rabbit hole of “Hey, this is supposed to be old,” with this new Struzanesque movie poster. It harkens back to the glory days when poster-making was an artform and Drew Struzan created classics for Star Wars, Back To The Future, E.T., and Indiana Jones. Nowadays they could whip up some bad Photoshop poster in an afternoon. They do it all the time, two big heads.

Though speculation is that this poster wasn’t created by Struzan rather another artist adoptin the Master‘s style. Case in point, Kyle Chandler’s face. Does he have the mumps? Oh man, what if he gets the mumps in the movie and now it’s ruined for everyone. Damn your Easter Eggs, Abrams!!

Super 8 opens in theaters this Friday and will be available on VHS tape in the fall. Check out the poster below and how to catch an early screening below that. (via IMP Awards)

PARAMOUNT AND TWITTER TEAM UP FOR FIRST-EVER ‘TWEET MOVIE SNEAK PREVIEW’ OF “SUPER 8” ON JUNE 9th

MOVIE FROM J.J. ABRAMS AND STEVEN SPIELBERG SET TO PLAY ON OVER 300 IMAX® AND OTHER SELECT PREMIUM SCREENS ACROSS THE COUNTRY ONE DAY AHEAD OF ITS NATIONWIDE RELEASE

HOLLYWOOD, CA (June 8, 2011) – Paramount Pictures and Twitter jointly announced today sneak preview showings of the movie SUPER 8 for 1-day only on Thursday, June 9th, in advance of the film’s scheduled nationwide release on Friday, June 10th. To promote the sneak previews, the companies have designated the hashtag #Super8Secret, which Paramount has also sponsored as a Promoted Trend, allowing Twitter’s global user base a direct link to buy tickets to the advanced previews. At select, participating theatres in the United States, Super 8 Sneak Preview moviegoers will be treated to a free popcorn (with a concession purchase) at each sneak preview show. Hosting movie sneak previews marks a first for Twitter. This promotion continues a key partnership between Paramount and Twitter on SUPER 8. The duo joined forces in March for the movie’s exclusive trailer premiere via Twitter, another exciting first for the site.

SUPER 8, from writer/director J.J. Abrams and producer Steven Spielberg, will open exclusively tomorrow, June 9th, on over 300 screens nationwide, featuring all 239 IMAX playdates in the U.S. and Canada. Fans can go to www.Twitter.com/Super8Movie <http://www.Twitter.com/Super8Movie> and use #Super8Secret to share information about the movie with friends. To be among the first to see SUPER 8, visit www.Super8-Movie.com/Sneak <http://www.Super8-Movie.com/Sneak> for tickets and show times.

“With SUPER 8, J.J. and Steven have created a really fun and engaging movie for all ages,” said Rob Moore, Vice Chairman of Paramount Pictures. “We are excited to finally get it out into the marketplace and using this sneak preview promotion with Twitter to kick start the film’s release, is an unprecedented way to get people into theaters and talking about the movie.”

“Twitter is how we hear about new movies and share our tiny reviews before the credits finish rolling,” said Biz Stone, Twitter cofounder. “There are already millions of people talking about SUPER 8 on Twitter and Paramount gets that. Creating more excitement about the film with sneak previews and free popcorn is a smart way to make this film a global conversation even before it’s released.”

“Twitter has the incredible capability of spreading buzz in real-time, as well as fostering communal conversations that encapsulate large audiences in a matter of seconds. We believe these elements are key in promoting a movie like SUPER 8 that has such incredible playability and the potential for unlimited positive word of mouth,” said Amy Powell, Paramount’s Executive Vice President, Interactive Marketing Strategies & Film Production.

SUPER 8 is an Amblin Entertainment / Bad Robot production, directed by Abrams from his original script and produced by Steven Spielberg, Abrams and Bryan Burk. The film stars Kyle Chandler, Elle Fanning, Joel Courtney, Gabriel Basso, Noah Emmerich, Ron Eldard, Riley Griffiths, Ryan Lee and Zach Mills. The movie takes place in the summer of 1979, where a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth – something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.

Witness the birth of a future necrophiliac.

With Super 8 derailing and escaping into theaters this weekend, my excitement is at a fever pitch. However, not every one is as excited to see it at I am and analysts are predicting it won’t earn as much money as the studio hopes it will. Which is fine by me. I don’t like crowded theaters.

The first clip shows off the chemistry between the child leads, Joel Courtney and Elle Fanning. It’s a pretty sweet scene though you do witness the birth of a future necrophiliac. And in the second clip, we see Kyle Chandler in a stylish G.I. Joe outfit and a surly attitude.

Anyway, help out this poor little lamb of a blockbuster film by J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg by putting the below clips in your eyeballs’ bellies. Then decide if you want to head out to theaters this weekend. Those guys could really use the support.

Our new contributor to all things geek, Jenna Busch, takes us back to simpler times, when kids solved mysteries without the Internet.

The other day my mom asked me, ”Is Super 8 like an updated version of E.T.?” Now, this is a woman who doesn’t follow movie news at all and can’t remember the name of the film she’s currently watching without looking at the DVD box, so this wasn’t an unexpected question. ”No, Mom,” I said, rolling my eyes. ”I mean, yes, it’s produced by Steven Spielberg and sure, there is an alien and yes, there are kids…but it’s a completely different film!”

After that conversation, I went to a second screening of the film. While I watched, all I could think about was how right my mother actually was. (I hate it when that happens.) Sure, the story is different. There are no adorable aliens hiding in the stuffed animals and drinking beer, believe me. But the feeling I got from watching the film was very, very similar to what I felt watching E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial in my footie pajamas at the drive-in. It’s the same thing I felt watching The Goonies. Warm fuzzies.

‘Super 8′ Gets A ‘Goonies’-esque Clip

Super 8 came from a desire to relive J.J. Abrams‘ childhood, shooting films on Super 8, just like Steven Spielberg. Abrams said in an interview with Empire Online that the intention was never to pay direct homage to Spielberg’s films, but that his childhood was very influenced by Spielberg’s work. Now, since I know info on the film has been locked up tighter than Fort Knox, here’s the deal. A group of kids are shooting a zombie film on Super 8 in the summer of 1979. The Walkman has just been introduced. Back then, you could take off on your bike for the entire day and show up at dinner time, no questions asked. Kids climbed in and out of each other’s windows and snuck out of the house at night without sinister motives. Anyway, one night while shooting a scene at the train station, the kids witness a horrific crash. Their still-rolling camera catches evidence of something leaving the train…

So, back to the Spielbergian fuzzies. Why did this film do to me what, say, District 9, for instance, did not? Part of it is the time period. These were the days when the film they were shooting on took days to develop. These were days when, if something was weird and you wanted to find out more, you went to the library. (In case you’re wondering, it’s a large building full of books. Like your Kindle, but with chairs and walls and a lady in glasses shushing you.) Your social group was the five or six kids on your block, especially during the summer. No camera phones. No asking the Twitterverse if anyone else knew what these random little silver cubes you found were. Everything was slower and less complicated. I know I sound like someone’s grandmother here. And no, I don’t want to go back to a time when I didn’t have a little magic computing box that sometimes works as a phone. I’m just saying that part of the reason early Spielberg was so heartwarming was the simplicity of the story. If you want to set a narrative about kids discovering an alien now, the story has to be so much more complex. What are the mechanics of the alien? Let’s look up info about alien sightings on Wikipedia. Hey, I took video and posted it on YouTube. Of course, one of the kids must be a genius hacker who breaks into a government computer to get information…

8 photosNew ‘Super 8′ Stills Show Everything (But The Monster)

You don’t really get that warm fuzzy thing from modern films outside of Pixar because there is simply too much to concentrate on. (Look at something like Inception. A brilliant film in so many, many ways, but missing one thing…heart. Hell, where do you fit it in?) There is something about the simplicity of the story and giving the actors time to actually feel things that breaks through our defenses and reminds us that we’re human. That’s part of it.

There is also the casting. Now, I don’t know how involved Spielberg was in the casting, but I’d be shocked if he wasn’t a large part of it. The kids in this film, mostly newcomers, had a charming sense of…well, childhood about them. There were no preternaturally adult-like kids here. (I’m looking at you, Dakota Fanning. Don’t know how your sister managed to avoid that.) There was no self-aggrandizing, self-aware acting. Abrams managed to direct these kids in a way that brought out their innocence. You don’t blink when Alice (Elle Fanning) climbs in the window of one of the boys. You don’t fear that the boy who likes to blow things up is going to end up blowing up a school in five years. This was a Spielbergian group of kids, right down to their speech patterns. A group getting together to save the town/their friends a la Goonies.

Finally, like E.T., this is an adventure story that revolves around a group of ordinary kids doing something extraordinary, often despite the adults in their world. The kids know best here. It’s their heart that gives them the right answer. Their innocence. Their lack of jadedness. The Spielbergian (god, I love that word) message that the heart…that kindness gives you the right answer. In The Goonies, kids have to sav the town and do the right thing. In E.T. it’s the kids who are kind to the alien. And without spoiling anything, it’s kids who save the day in Super 8. Damnit, I hate when Mom’s right. Don’t tell her I said that, okay?

Turns out to be a patronizing exercise in fabricated childhood emotion.

Like me, you may be looking forward to super 8 and the return of Amblin movies. As Amblin goes, this is more of the *batteries not included Amblin than The Goonies Amblin. It turns out to be a patronizing exercise in fabricated childhood emotion.

Charles (Riley Griffiths) is making a movie on his family’ super 8 camera. It’s 1979 and all his friends are helping. One night they capture a train crash on film and stumble upon a mysterious military conspiracy that unfolds as they wait for the film to be developed. This is the perfect vehicle for Joe (Joel Courtney) to deal with his grief over his mother’s death at the steel mill. What, you want a plot summary, right?

I should love a movie about child filmmakers made by filmmakers, but the young characters ring false. They speak in overlapping, unfocused interruptions, which is how teenagers talk today but not how I imagine kids 30 years ago talked. When Joe marvels about how the lovely Alice Dainard (Elle Fanning), it’s pushing us to find it charming, not genuine puppy love. It’s a script problem, but also may be child actors a little wiser than the characters they’re playing, and being over-directed.

New ‘Super 8′ Trailer: Still No Creature

The film talk is so technical it loses any wonder of kids loving film. It’s funny when a background kid mimics talking on the phone, but otherwise Super 8 tries to teach kids about film rather than glorify the budding Spielbergs. Wasn’t J.J. Abrams one of them?

I was okay with the setup: the dead mom and the wake with kids talking about the body. I mean, you’ve gotta start with a broken family. Then it’s so patronizing how the child connects with the monster. I appreciate the values of it, but the execution was inorganic to the story. Devil had a great take on the same “forgiveness vs. angry aggression” issue, but nobody wants to hear that lesson from M. Night Shyamalan. When Alice comes to Joe’s room, you should feel something but it’s just “insert heart here.”

8 photosNew ‘Super 8′ Stills Show Everything (But The Monster)

The train crash is impressive but obviously all CGI, or at least composited. It never feels like a scene is unfolding, just a sequence of money shots that the kids pretended to run away from on the set. By the time the action picked up, I hated the kids so much I just wanted to be done. It’s so mechanical it’s no fun. Don’t follow the D-bag, because they kill D-bags in movies like this.

The film builds a mystery, because you really don’t know what’s going on, but not a lot of suspense. There are a few attacks where the monster is obscured. It’s basically just Cloverfield with more money and less personality. Now the camera can spin around from more angles, and the lens can flare like in Star Trek. All the things Cloverfield avoided.

’79 puts this movie just before the era of the Amblin greats, and the references are simply irritating. I usually love references, but jokes about how nobody can develop film overnight? Yeah, that’s funny because we know they now have one-hour photo. And wow, a walkman, just like having your own personal stereo!

This is why I’m not that worried about all the remakes and sequels and comic book movies being made. An original concept can be just as phony and hollow as remakes.

Once again, we don’t see the monster or creature or alien or whatever it is that is tearing this small town to shreds. But we do get to see a small town get torn to shreds. So there’s that!!

This film just keeps looking better and better and I’m really looking forward to seeing it this weekend. It is such a tease though to not show the creature thingamabob. Is it done intentionally to build buzz? Or is there another reason. Perhaps it has boobs for a face. I guess we’ll find out on Friday.

Why watch TV at all when you can get all the movie commercials right here in this post?

It’s the end of the week, which means that we get a respite from the dregs of the Friday news cycle courtesy of a whole slew of TV spots for upcoming films. We’ve got the first one for Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the second one for The Change-Up, the third for Captain ‘merica, the fourth for Cowboys and Aliens, and the ninth for Super 8, despite the fact that we still don’t know what the hell is going on there. These spots come to us from Coming Soon, so we would like to apologize in advance for the poor quality. Just kidding. Those guys are all right.

Paramount gave the interwebs a ton of new pictures showing the film's many, many humans.

Everybody wants to see the alien monster in J.J. Abrams‘ Super 8. So, naturally, Paramount gave the interwebs a ton of new pictures showing the film’s many, many humans. Eh, what’s the big deal? It’s just gonna turn out to be a Cloverfield.

New ‘Super 8′ Clip: Kids Are Afraid Of Guns And Monsters

Super 8 follows a bunch of teens shooting their own monster movie, only to accidentally film and bear witness to a train crash… but what crazy thing was inside? The previews have been excellent so far, and I’m still recording movies of my lazy cat with their iPhone app. In the above pictures, you’ll see the unsuspecting townsfolk, the stylized, Spielberg-ian children, and the military men who will probably end up taking orders or at least ideas from the children. From the mouths of babes come unexpected solutions to stopping monsters.

Starring Elle Fanning, Kyle Chandler and AJ Michalka, Super 8 crashes into theaters June 10, 2011.

Super 8 is in the midst of a big promotional push from Paramount. As part of that push, they’ve released yet another clip from the movie, this one showing that wacky gang of movie-making kids taking advantage of that train that explodes and runs off the tracks, setting the wheels of the mysterious plot in motion. Enjoy, and remember: Don’t mess around with trains. They’re dangerous even when they’re not exploding.

‘Super 8′ Super Pack: New Clip, New Pics, New iPhone App

In case Schwarzenegger's secret kid is pushing the 'Super 8' kids temporarily out of your head, here's some more preview stuff.

Whatever you do, keep thinking about Super 8, the new J.J. Abrams movie produced by Steven Spielberg. I know it’s easy to forget movie releases that throw pics and clips at you pretty much every day, but in case Schwarzenegger‘s secret kid is pushing Super 8′s June 10th release date temporarily out of your head, here’s some more preview stuff.

Above is a new clip, featuring the children of Super 8 doing what they do best: running and screaming. They also have a car apparently, which is pretty badass. Below are two new pictures of the kids staring at something. What are they staring at? Nobody knows and no one will ever know. Or, y’know, we’ll all find out in June.

However, the most novel new thing in Super 8 Land is Paramount releasing an iPhone app that turns your phone into Super 8 camera emulator, where you can film old-seeming movies. Get it here. You have to pull down the projector in the app to watch the movie, which is the kind of adorable little detail that really pisses me off. Still, it’s free (for now) and will definitely keep you entertained for a few precious minutes.
'Star Trek' fans, rejoice. The J.J. Abrams-patented excessive lens flare is back.

If you’re a fan of J.J. Abrams‘ Star Trek, you might have watched the Super 8 trailer and thought to yourself, “where’s all my beloved excessive lens flare?” Leave it the Japanese to light a “flare” under this movie’s ass.

The poster below is the Japanese one-sheet for Super 8, directed by J.J. Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg. There are a couple of touches that make their version just a bit weirder than ours, like what’s the deal with all the different lights? Are there gonna be multiple alien monsters, piloting different ships? Also, the lights and the placement of the kids kinda looks like a skull, and all that crazy alien writing is just messed up. Oh, that’s Japanese, the language of Japan? Never mind that last one, everybody.

The mystery train crashes into theaters June 10. (FirstShowing.net)

Children are such scaredy cats when it comes to guys with bloody faces pointing guns at them.

Children are such scaredy cats when it comes to guys with bloody faces pointing guns at them. That’s what we learn from the newest clip from J.J. Abrams‘ highly anticipated Super 8. The preview above takes place after the train crash. The kids are poking around the wreckage, hanging out, finding important maps ‘n’ stuff, when all of a sudden – bam – crazy guy with a bunch of guns.

Man, Super 8 is reminding me of Goonies more and more. It’s about kids on an adventure, one of them’s a tubbo, it’s produced by Steven Spielberg, and now there’s an important map. I hope the monster turns out to be a giant Sloth.

Next clip airs tomorrow on Fox during “American Idol.”

Kids do the darndest things. Like videotaping vast governmental cover-ups.

This edited clip (but not really a trailer) from Super 8 set to The Cars’ “Bye Bye Love” doesn’t really offer much new insight into the story being told, but does slant it in a new fashion. Rather than roll with the standard J.J. Abrams “We’re gonna confuse and tease the hell out of you so you are frustrated into the theater,” this clip (and the odd song pairing) creates a more whimsical, coming-of-age ambiance.

New ‘Super 8′ TV Spot Will Take You Back

I really don’t think that this avenue is Abrams’ strong suit, but with Spielberg on board, perhaps some nostalgia slipped into the film. This is a manipulated 30-second clip, compared to lots of footage that show’s this as a more conventional supernatural thriller, so I’m not convinced this isn’t just for marketing. Nonetheless, it still makes the movie look pretty awesome.

Will this be the one that finally gives the whole movie away?

J.J. Abrams‘s Super 8 is a throwback to another era. More specifically, it’s a throwback to the 70s and 80s – even more specifically, a throwback to the scifi movies of Steven Spielberg that came out in those decades. Movies like ET and Close Encounters of the Third Kind (OK, pretty much just those two) that combined slick excitement with a true sense of wonder and awe.

So it is with this TV spot, which reminds me of those halcyon days when commercials didn’t feature iPhone apps, computer-manipulated talking babies, or dumb-looking guys in glasses. Watch it, and remember what it was like to watch commercials for movies in a simpler time.

These children are looking at something. But what? Because Super 8 is a J.J. Abrams movie, I’m gonna spend the next 10 hours studying these stills for clues. There’s bound to be a secret URL in there that goes to a website that says, “they’re totally looking at a Cloverfield.” Then I’ll post the findings on a message board, where I will debate trolls for a couple of days about whether or not my discovery was cool. *Adjusts Pocket Protector*

The Paramount movie is set to be released this June, and follows a group of kids who witness a train crash while filming a zombie movie… and watch an alien escape from the wreckage. Man, look at the mix of wonder and terror in their eyes in the night picture. This looks like an 80s kids movie, and I mean that in the best way possible. If this were made as a more modern movie about children, all three of those kids would have smirks on their faces and giant laser guns. Kid power sucks.
If you like video games, you almost certainly like J.J. Abrams, so you played right into his trap.

In a move that actually makes quite a bit of sense, the marketers of Super 8 have managed to weasel an interactive “trailer” into the video game Portal 2, a first-person action/puzzle solving game. Since “action/puzzle-solving” also very well describes virtually every J.J. Abrams project, it seems that this a pretty decent little match made here.

The interactive clip allows the user to walk through and investigate the train from which an alien disappeared. There have been no shortage of clues and hints given in the released materials to date, so if you’re inclined, check out the video and see if you can’t figure out what the hell this movie is all about. If you’re not inclined, but go absolutely bananas for voiceovers that mimic the NPR style but with adorable accents, well you might be on board with this as well.

Sadly, this is not a still from either film.

Ahhh, movie stills, the last bastion of a slow news day.

First up we’ve got a pic from Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon that shows Rosie Huntington-Whitely being led to safety by America’s new favorite everyman, Shia Labeouf. He must have just rescued her from a day spa or something, because the poor guy looks like he has gone through hell while she looks like she’s ready for tea at the Plaza. He’s also carrying a messenger bag and rocking his go-to motorcycle jacket, so it’s nice to see that his character hasn’t embraced the preppy look like so many of my douchey friends have. Way to stay strong, Shia.

Man, I wish they had a picture of a Transformer in there, or something. It would make for a much more compelling image. Oh well.

Give yourself a minute to catch your breath and we’ll move on to a still that is somehow more mundane. If you weren’t too drunk during your Super Bowl party, you may remember the trailer for J.J. Abrams‘ Super 8. Well, one of those quick cuts is back from the grave. In still form. I’ve got goosebumps too, guys.

This project has been shrouded in secrecy, which should be no surprise considering Abrams’ involvement.

As we discussed before in dissecting the teaser, that’s probably not an errant sound guy in the background, but a player in the “movie within a movie” set up. Which means that the movie will features layers of meaning (read: confusion). Keep on trucking, J.J. You’re doing God’s work. God’s frustrating, confusing work.

The sound guy seems miffed.

A mysterious viral campaign for a J.J. Abrams project? Impossible.

A mysterious viral campaign for a J.J. Abrams project? Impossible.

In the new trailer for Super 8, someone with lightning fast reading skills or way too much time on his hands found a URL in the camera flicker at the very end. The URL is S8Editingroom.com and on the site are various movie clips you can watch. Not gonna spoil the content, but really, there’s not that much to spoil. I’m guessing the old school film countdown leader won’t play too significant a role in the narrative. There are probably more clips to come, cause of the empty film strip hooks on the rotator and “clip missing” screens. So, keep refreshing that website every single minute of your life for updates.

As the proud owner of a Dharma Initiative ID Card and a Slusho t-shirt, I wish I was more psyched about the new viral. This “old educational movie footage” feels a bit old hat after “Lost.” However, maybe this is the kickoff to a bigger promotion, which will lead to me getting another free t-shirt somehow. Then I’ll get excited about September 18, 1962 – I promise. (JoBlo)

You saw the trailer, now check out this mysterious poster for a film that's clearly at the intersection of Abrams Drive and Spielberg Blvd, near What All The Best 80's Kids Movies Were Like Municipal Park.

‘Sup.

This is the first movie poster I’ve seen that’s perfectly designed for Friday. On Friday, you’re bored at your desk, waiting to leave work, with your tilted head resting on your hand and arm, about to fall asleep. You come across this poster for director J.J. Abrams‘ Super 8, produced by Steven Spielberg, starring Elle Fanning, Kyle Chandler and Ron Eldard. You think, “why are the words oriented wrong?” Then your boss says you can go, you tilt your head back up the right way, and you think, “uh, wait, why is the landscape oriented wrong?” There’s a pause, and then you think, “oh, cool.”

You saw the trailer, now check out this mysterious poster for a film that’s clearly at the intersection of Abram Drive and Spielberg Blvd, near What All The Best 80′s Kids Movies Were Like Municipal Park. Speaking of nostalgia, that glowing water tower – do you suppose Yakko, Wakko and Dot are in there? I think the answer is almost certainly… “yes.”

Soon, JJ Abrams transformation into Steven Spielberg will be complete. The new trailer for Super 8 wears Spielberg on its sleeve more than Spielberg and gives us more than we could have ever hoped for. The plot follows a group of kids who witness a train derailment and the escape of its strange cargo. Mysterious disappearances then plague their small town while the Army patrols the streets without providing any answers.

Then things go insane. It looks like this summer’s biggest hit without a doubt.

Somewhere, deep below the surface of the earth, there is a heavily guarded vault containing all of J.J. Abrams story secrets... and one just left.

Abrams‘ story secrets. All the stuff that was never answered on “Lost,” what becomes of the Cloverfield monster, and until recently, the plot of his new film Super 8, which Abrams wrote and directed. Well, now that last mystery has been allowed above ground, thanks to the folks at Paramount. Behold – the plot:

In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth – something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.

There’s a rumor that says the official trailer will debut this weekend at Battle: Los Angeles. Then fanboys will get to examine the trailer for clues, examine those clues for clues, and examine their lives and whether they’re using them properly.

Produced by Steven Spielberg, and starring Elle Fanning, Amanda Michalka, and Kyle Chandler, Super 8 crashes into theaters June 10th.
It’s no surprise that fans are furiously coming through last night’s Super Bowl ad for Super 8 in search of “Easter eggs.” After all, die-hard devotees of J.J. Abrams have come to expect all sorts of coded messages and double meanings within his work. After combing through the trailer myself, and searching several message boards, I’ve come up with the following eight pictures that may contain hidden clues about the Steven Spielberg produced film.

Mysterious Date

Our first image is a mysterious date found within a flash just before the trailer’s title screen. Commenters on a related message board (i.e. hardcore nerds) did some research and discovered that a UFO was spotted on the same date near Tampa, FL. According to the USAF’s Project Blue Book, “Three star-like objects approached horizontally, hovered. ‘Impression was that objects were under intelligent control at all times.’” The info comes from a highly reputable website. By that, I mean it was probably put up by some dude living in his mom’s basement.

The Bulletin Board

Next up is this shot of a bulletin board. According to said commenters, the board has a surprising amount of posts looking for lost dogs, almost as if something in the town is stealing them. Could an alien be feeding on poor Fido?

Zombie

This still clearly shows a zombie lurking in the left of the frame. The easy explanation is that the kids in the movie are filming their own zombie film. Abrams has indicated that is the case. Obviously, this is smoke screen, and zombies will feature prominently in the film. I’d bet my wife’s life on it.

Car Lot Numbers

Could this seemingly random string of numbers indicate a pattern of some sort similar to the numbers in lost? Probably not, but at least the years on the car give us a better idea of when the film is taking place.

R.C.?

Obviously the R.C. in this sign stands for something beyond “remote control.” Could it be a reference to Ray Charles, who costarred with Spielberg in The Blues Brothers? Clearly, that’s the most logical explanation, but it could also stand for “read Communion,” the famous alie abduction novel.

No, YOU’RE stretching!

Nice Hat

Is that Indiana Jones‘ fedora making an appearance? Also, the blue beret is a bit of a mystery, since they were not worn by the U.S. Military. They were, however, worn by Soviet Airborne troops. I smell a rat…a big commie rat.

Jaw Dropper

According to online fan boys, this is a shot of an alien jaw pulled from the trailer. I don’t see it, but I’ll take their word for it.

John Locke the Jeweler?

The sign above the soldier clearly says “Locke Jeweler.” Could this be a reference to John Locke, a character from Abrams’ hit show, “Lost.” Sure, why not. It could also just be a sign.

Find anymore clues? Let us know in the comments section and we’ll get our best men on it.

Here's a rundown of the tent-pole trailers that will air in between talking baby ads and horses farting.

Now that New England has been knocked out of the running, I guess the only reason I have to watch the Super Bowl is for the commercials. A lot of big films will run previews during this year’s game, so it looks like there’s something for everybody. Unless you were hoping to see mutants. Despite expectations, X-Men: First Class will not air a Super Bowl trailer.

Here’s a rundown of the movie trailers that will air in between talking baby ads, Doritos wannabes, and horses farting:

Super 8

Captain America: The First Avenger

Thor

Transformers: Dark Of The Moon

Rango

Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Cowboys & Aliens

Limitless

(THR)
