Revenge of the Nerds

You can only be pushed so far, even if you’re a nerd. When terrorized by the big men on campus, a group of nerdy students band together to turn the tables on the jocks. In this scenario, an upper-decker simply will not suffice. What they need to do is beat these jerks at their own game. Which means, they best them at the Annual Greek Games, steal their homes, and then their girlfriends.

Synopsis: L.A. screenwriter David Sumner relocates with his wife to her hometown in the deep South. There, while tensions build between them, a brewing conflict with locals becomes a threat to them both.

1. The Fly

David Cronenberg‘s 1986 horror masterpiece drew its origins from the 1958 cult classic starring Vincent Price. Making use of (then) modern special effects techniques, the movie offers a chilling commentary about the dangers of unchecked scientific progress in a way the original never could. It also made me throw up when I was eight-years old!

2. Cape Fear

The original Cape Fear, staring Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum, was a striking thriller for its time. But when Martin Scorsese took on the material thirty years later, he crafted a violent and chilling morality play, brutalizing the characters-and the audience-in a way early 1960′s film censorship boards would never allow. Plus, we got that awesome meme of DeNiro laughing maniacally in a movie theater, and that has only changed our world for the better.

3. Ocean’s Eleven

I don’t think I’m killing a sacred cow by saying that the original Ocean’s 11 was not a great film. It was mostly an excuse for Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack to hang out in Vegas, get loaded, and call it a movie. But the concept was solid, and director Steven Soderbergh knocked that concept out of the park, crafting the ultimate heist movie and starting the redemption of George Clooney after the debacle that was Batman & Robin. Then the cast made Ocean’s 12, which was mostly an excuse for them to hang out in Europe, get loaded and call it a sequel. Oh well.

Funny Games

Michael Haneke’s Funny Games is a remake, but it’s a remake of the director’s own movie, sadistically tailored to American audiences. And it is perhaps the ultimate home invasion movie, using ever weapon in the director’s arsenal to drive the characters (an upper-class suburban family who are attacked by two murderously playful villains) and the audience into a frenzy.

Panic Room

A good home invasion movie grabs the audience by the throat and puts them in a state of almost unbearable suspense – this is certainly the case with Panic Room. There’s a twist, though- for the vast majority of the movie, the mother and daughter being invaded aren’t even in the same room with the dangerous thieves that have broken into their home. It’s thanks to the “panic room” of the title, but what happens if the invaders want to get INTO the panic room?

One Hour Photo

Some home invaders prefer to provide more psychological than physical disturbances. Robin Williams‘ character in One Hour Photo would be a good a good example of this, as he becomes unhealthily obsessed with a family that regularly has their photos developed by him. His loneliness is so real that you might find yourself feeling sorry for him, at least until he snaps and starts threatening the family members with a knife when they don’t meet his standards for the perfect family.

John Carter would like to say hello. Judging by the poster, the producers would like you to call him “JC.” Are there some religious undertones here? Taylor Kitsch, who plays John Carter, has long hair, so the answer is an unqualified “yes.”

Four new Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 posters came out today, and they look pretty much like the other 5,200 posters we’ve seen for the final installment. They might have been taught at Hogwarts how to defeat evil, but it appears the gang was sick the day they taught everyone about respecting other people’s property.

Star Wars taught us that the bad guy always has the re weapon. What is this poster trying to say? Is Harry actually the villain and Voldemort the hero? Should the title have been Voldemort Jones and the Smooshed Nose of Righteousness?

This poster demonstrates that you can be both the leader of all that is evil and also be visibly self-conscious about your appearance.

If this final showdown demonstrated in the this poster and the previous one isn’t set to Michael Jackson‘s “Beat It” then…missed opportunity.

This remake of Straw Dogs follows the same basic formula as the original, with James Marsden and Kate Bosworth playing the happy couple and Alexander Skarsgard playing the head baddie. Marsden and Bosworth get tormented by Skarsgard until the mild-mannered Marsden stands his ground, much like Dustin Hoffman did in the original.

While the big star of this film is certainly the story, any questions as to whether direction and performances can live up to the original should be answered here. It’s not the original, but it looks like a damn entertaining film. People should harass James Marsden much more frequently if this is the result.
